good morning. back in the game. nfl star ray rice looking for a team this morning after a judge reinstated the embattled running back. this as his wife janay rice speaks out about the attack and aftermath. >> he tried to hit me. i didn't want to hear anything. i knew he hit me and i was over it. >> more of matt lauer's interview and rice's chances of getting back on the field. pressing on. dozens of people arrested overnight across the country. angry demonstrators taking to the stores and streets continuing their protests over the decision not to indict the officer in the death of michael brown. mysterious disappearance.

in to the ruling and we are hearing from his wife for the first time. a second chance for ray rice. once suspended indefinitely for hitting his then fiancee in an elevator and now the arbitration let him take to the field again. this comes as his wife janay rice is speaking out with matt lauer. taped before friday's decision. >> we have seen you months after the incident and i can't imagine you were that calm when you started to realize what happened in that elevator. can you describe those emotions? >> i was furious. we came home and we didn't talk the entire ride. i didn't speak to him the entire ride home. he tried to talk to me. i didn't want to hear anything. i just knew he hit me and i was

completely over it. i was done. didn't want to hear anything. i didn't want to entertain it. in my heart, in the back of my mind, i knew our relationship wouldn't be over. i knew this is not us. >> reporter: the big question now is centering on rice's professional life. will another team make him an offer to suit up? >> with ray rice, there will be an unknown. >> reporter: rice won his appeal after arguing the nfl was punishing him twice for the same offense. the nfl first suspended rice for two games in june. upon learning the incident in the elevator and suspended him indefinitely after the video was released. nfl officials argued they hadn't seen t seen the tape and not consistent about what rice told him about what happened. >> the judge said rice had the

videotape and the nfl never asked him for it. >> reporter: now janay rice told espn that she and her husband are relieved by the decision. quote, i made an inexcusable mistake. i'm thankful there is a proper appeals process in place. the league respects the decision to reinstate rice and knowledge ray rice is a free agent based on judge jones' decision, he will be eligible to play upon signing a new contract. this is a setback for roger goodell who has come under scrutiny over the handling of this case and others. erica, back to you. >> thank you. you can see the latest with ray and janay rice on upon here on "today." and police made dozens arrests overnight as people were marching and protesting in the

shooting death of michael blown. in seattle, protesters in a standoff with police. in st. louis, demonstrators stopped black friday for a bit. nbc's ron allen is in ferguson this morning. ron, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, craig. after several days of relative peace and calm, protesters returned to the ferguson police headquarters last night. 16 arrested for blocking the street. on black friday, more staged an event there. the wave of protesters surged through the st. louis mall demanding justice for michael brown and more. >> if black lives don't matter, black friday shouldn't matter. >> reporter: urging people to shut their wallets and focus on justice and policy instead of buying more stuff. >> you can shop and learn about civics at the same time. >> reporter: it must be close to 100 people.

so far the police are staying back letting them do what they want to do. several hours later, police shutdown the st. louis galleria mall. the call to boycott black friday on social media. twitter hash tags li like #blackoutblackfriday. it shot up in new york's time square and then the magnificent mile in chicago. >> it is silly when people's lives are wrecked every day. >> you have exactly one minute to disburse. >> reporter: in los angeles, a demonstration blocking roads. in seattle, police say officers and protesters used pepper spray outside the main shopping mall. in ferguson, people are hailing this mystery woman seen in the video that appeared on youtube confronting men outside a pizza restaurant in the middle of

monday's madness. the images broadcast on local tv. she is quite a brave soul. here is something that caught our eye. in portland, oregon, a police officer and young boy embracing. the officer apparently spotted the boy and spotted the sign that said free hugs. the boy returned to protesters and the officer returned to duty. we would like to see more of that. >> ron allen in ferguson, thank you. shifting gears now as we look at the holiday shopping season. it is officially in full swing. millions awakened early friday, some did not go to bed, to catch the sales. here in new york, shoppers waited in the cold to get inside the city's most popular stores. a similar scene played out across the country where in some cases traditional chaos ended in

arrests. we have nbc's miguel almaguer outside rockefeller plaza. >> reporter: department stores and shopping malls across the country, they will be backed. if black friday is any indication of what's to come, this weekend will be a zoo. >> three, two, one! >> reporter: out in force and in some cases, out of control. the crowds. >> we are diehards now. 16 years we all have come together. >> reporter: the chaos. >> it's all about the deals. >> reporter: and of course, the savings. >> business discounts. some were under $10. >> reporter: but black friday blowouts can come in more ways than one. across the pond, mayhem in manchester, england. while here at home, the sales got downright criminal. two arrested at a kohl's. the fist fight in baby aisle.

a retail analyst. >> good morning. >> let's start with things you can scratch off your list. the shopper, average american shopper, is feeling better. what items should they go with first? >> they will buy the apple iphone 6. we are seeing a lot of apple products sold. outer wear and athletic is working. watches and handbags. a michael kors store across the street. a lot of those items too. >> is that because they are discounted more than usual? >> they are the most popular items that people want. very giftable. >> for the traditional shopper. folks who don't like to go online. they like the brick and mortar store and they want to touch the item. where can they go? >> macy's. you see at macy's across the board whether it is for millennials or other categories,

it is a wide assortment. >> a lot of discounts? >> discounts, but not deep like last year. we are seeing the promotions and tracking what it was last year. retailers are smart. they manage to black friday weekend carefully. they manage the margins and the promotions. it will be a profitable holiday season. >> which online retailer? >> amazon, walmart and e-bay. >> that is the case year in and year out. and today, as miguel mentioned, small business saturday and monday is cyber monday. what does that mean? >> there will continue to be deals. the holiday weekend, black friday, it started a month ago. retailers were trying to attract the consumer them. >> based on what you are seeing and hearing, are we going to top last year or will it be about the same or off? >> it will be a little better than last year.

overall, for the past ten years, a 2.9% increase. last year was a bit more than 3%. hitting 4% could be an opportunity. >> dana, thank you so much. sheinelle is following the pope's trip to turkey this morning. sheinelle, good morning. good morning. the pope is on a three-day visit to the nation. we have richard engel with the latest in istanbul. >> reporter: in a region torn by war, the pope continues his tour. on a rare papal visit to turkey, pope francis met with the president and strongly condemned religious extremism and persecution by isis of christians in iraq. all forms of fundamentalism and terrorism demean every man and woman and exploit religion.

today, pope francis arrived in istanbul. built in the sixth century, it was a church for a thousand years. the spiritual center of an orthodox christian empire. in 1453, the empire was conquered and sofia was converted into a mosque. today, it is a museum. some turks had threatened to protest, but it didn't happen. the pope was given a warm reception. in a spirit of religious toleran tolerance, the pope visited the mosque praying alongside a cleric stressing that it has been a theater of fractured wars. pope is expected to return to rome tomorrow. >> richard engel, thanks.

this morning, an egyptian court dismissed the charges against hosni mubarak. he was charged with ordering the protesters that removed him from power. the fbi this morning is investigating friday's shooting rampage in austin, texas which targeted key government buildings. the dead gunman who fired off 100 shots before trying to set the mexican consulate on fire. investigators say he was shot outside headquarters. it is unclear if police took him down or whether he took his own life. the faa is investigating what caused a small plane to go down in michigan on friday. narrowly missing a home with two people inside. four people were aboard the single-engine plane. three passengers crawled to safety, but the pilot was pulled out with serious injuries. now to a smash-and-grab caught on camera in michigan. look closely as the driver repeatedly rams his van into a

liquor store. then crawls through the broken glass. police say, get this, the suspect is a local eighth grader who targeted the store before. in september, he made off with $2,000 in alcohol. finally, we were talking about this at the top of the show. hollywood star mickey rourke returned to the ring in russia defeating a fighter half his age. almost too easily leading some to question if it was scripted. rourke is 62 years old and fought against a golden gloves champ who is 29. he said age is not a factor and he lost 35 pounds to prepare. >> i don't know if age is a factor, but hitting is not a factor. >> can we see the video quickly? >> we need to. >> here's my thing. do people pay to see the real fight? >> the guys are really selling

colder on tuesday, back down to the 40s. back to the 50s. we're well over the place. and maybe a snow shower early on wednesday. now to breaking news that we've been keeping you updated on this morning. a two-alarm fire at a nissan dealership. but they are now under control. nobody was hurt, but they unsure what caused the fire. be sure to stay with nbc 10 for updates. a developing story that we're following. the search is on for a college student who disappeared after a night out with friends in philadelphia. shane montgomery is 21 years old. he's a student at west chester university. he was last seen leaving the kildare's pub on wednesday eve. investigators are trying to enhance surveillance video from inside the bar. they are calling the disappearance suspicious but they do not expect foul play.

not been seen since. kevin tibbles has more. >> reporter: volunteers handed out flyers near the place where 23-year-old kosta karageorge an osu senior, was last seen. >> we need help. instead of two or three or four people out looking for him, we want hundreds of thousands looking for him. >> reporter: karageorge apparently left his apartment at 2:00 wednesday morning. telling roommates he was going out for a walk. the defensive lineman did not show up for practice that day or at his family's for thanksgiving. karageorge is a three-year member of the university's wrestling team and this year, the 6'5", 285 pound athlete, walked on to the famed ohio state football team. officials say shortly before leaving his apartment, he texted his mother. "sorry if i am an embarrassment,

badly needed repairs came with a new focus for its owner of 15 years, tony lawrence. he has always pledged his community would not go hungry. >> they were putting the sign up over the top of the store, they put tony's. one important word they left off. that's community. >> generosity that has often come at a big cost. >> how much loss do you accept in a given month so people can eat? >> i think it is not a guess. 25%. >> we gave tony a plan to cut his losses and still taking care of his neighbors. top priority, make the store inviting. tony installed a new grill and is now selling breakfast sandwiches along with the famous chicken salad. he added fresh produce to the front of the store and is working on a customer loyalty program.

paint the big picture and break it down into smaller milestones. the second thing you have to do and this is important, erica, you need to make sure you have someone responsible for keeping an eye on you. someone you trust and admire. third, make sure you do this whole thing very quickly. because if it takes a long time, you are dropping the ball. most importantly, you need to celebrate the successes and then go back and say, i achieved this milestone. what can be done next time. >> that helps motivate you for the next one. another thing that a lot of people have in common of all of the businesses we looked at. the toy station and food truck in nashville and now with tony. one of the issues is not just finding focus, but also where do people begin? it seems overwhelming. how do you suggest people need to make a change start that process? >> i personally think to create a great vision and big idea. i'll tell you a secret, but

don't tell anyone. go on the internet and steal ideas. surf around. you will find great ideas, not for your industry, but other industries and adapt that. second, i think personally what you have to do is make sure what you do all this stuff, you build up a concept with the breaking rules. i personally like to break the rules because what it means is you are standing outside the crowd and it is different. it is okay to upset people. second or third, you have to make sure you do this very fast because otherwise you lose momentum. it should not take years, but weeks. >> we're looking forward to more changes and check in with people again soon. martin, nice to have you here. thanks for being with us. just ahead, a real-life paddington bear story. one company is

game. the question is will a team pick him up? we have kristen welker in washington, d.c. with more. >> reporter: good morning, erica. this decision means ray rice is clear to play and can sign with any team effective immediately. on friday, a former district court judge serving as arbitrator overturned the suspension of rice calling it arbitrary. the judge agreed with rice who argued he was being punished twice and he should be reinstated. the nfl suspended rice for two games in june after he hit his then fiancee and now wife. then the nfl suspended him indefinitely after the video was released. nfl officials said they had not seen the tape. this comes as we hear from rice's wife about the incident in the first time in the exclusive interview with matt lauer which was taped before friday's ruling. >> because we only have seen you

in chicago last night. police say and man opened fire on his girlfriend in a nordstrom's store before shooting himself. the woman is an employee and still in critical condition. two young boys buried alive in a snow pile. the 11 and 9-year-old boys playing outside building a fort when they were mistakenly buried by a snow plow. they survived with an air pocket in the heavy snow. rescuers dug frantically to get to the boys who were conscious, but cold. >> me and my cousin could not feel our bodies. i could not feel my legs. he could not feel half of his body. >> the boys remain in the hospital this morning. their families say they will have a full thanksgiving dinner when they get home. actor mickey rourke is speaking out after the controversial win on friday.

lookout this morning for a brazen gang of bikers riding recklessly and posting them online. as nbc's jacob rascon reports, police are keeping a close eye on. >> reporter: it almost looks like a video game. the youtube video posted a week ago and in it a pack of bikers refusing to pull over or stop at red lights or drive on the right side of the road. there is not much police officer can do except call for back up. the bikers hide under bridges and through pedestrian tunnels. eventually turning off lights and getting away. last month, another video went viral. when a california patrol officer confronted bikers breaking the law in san jose, one told the officer it is not worth it. just go. and he did. >> they are pushing the nfl. where there is a greater risk of being caught and potentially
