rain in the first alert forecast. i have verified that it's not sunshine outside at this hour. good morning. welcome to "nbc 10 news today" on this monday. i'm chris cato. let's begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. bill, are you seeing any sun out there yet? >> good morning, chris. not yet, but we will see a break through the clouds that are with us to start with. those clouds will be thinning out, and once the sun is up, our chances of seeing that sunshine will increase dramatically. that's a live view from center city. 42 degrees, thanks to the clouds. temperatures didn't get all that cold overnight at 42 here at nbc 10. 41 in allentown, reading, pottstown. trenton is at 40 and low 40s across delaware and south jersey. nice, uniform temperatures with the clouds overhead. the clouds will be thinning out after a cloudy start. 41 degrees at 7:00, 42 at 9:00, and then into the middle 40s at lunchtime. your hour-by-hour future weather in less than ten minutes, but right now, let's check in with first alert traffic reporter jillian mele. good morning, jillian. >> good morning, bill. good morning to you at home as well. for the most part, majors are

looking pretty good with the exception of this one problem that we are following out of new jersey. we are dealing with an accident in maple shade right now on route 73, the northbound side out near high street and near route 38. you can see this ramp is blocked as a result of all of this activity from that accident. we have applicatipolice and firt the scene. not many details about exactly what happened, but as we get them, we will pass them along to you. that's something we will continue to follow. as far as pennsylvania majors, you can see 76, the blue route, even 95 clear of any incidents. right now we're not reporting any delays on those majors. chris? all right, two minutes after 4:00. let's get back to the breaking news we are following out of philadelphia's mayfair neighborhood. nbc 10's jesse gary live on scene, where jesse, we know that police have shot a suspect. what else do we know at this point? >> reporter: chris, the suspect's body is still inside this ambulance that's parked here at the scene. initially, they thought he may have a pulse. and so, medics were brought in and they were about to transport him to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead inside the ambulance, so they're keeping

his body here as part of the scene and the evidence as they do their investigation. you see philadelphia police officers and commanders with the 15th district here on scene. this shooting happened maybe 30-35 minutes ago. we're on frankford avenue in between mcgee and unrue. that white charger that you see right there, investigators say that was initially stopped because it might have been involved in a robbery. they were checking to see. they say the suspect had a gun inside the car. some kind of struggle ensued and one of two philadelphia police officers fired one time, killing the suspect. one officer has been taken to an area hospital for evaluation while they complete their investigations here. community. that will be coming up at 4:30. live in mayfair, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. chris? breaking news now from the other side of the world in australia, where a hostage situation is unfolding in

sydney, australia. so far, we know that five people have escaped a cafe where a gunman took an unknown number of hostages at the height of the monday morning rush hour. this began when witnesses say a man carrying a bag that appeared to be containing a gun entered the store. shortly after, dozens of armed police showed up at the scene. people inside were seen standing inside the cafe with their hands pressed against the glass. you saw that video there. authorities believe as many as 50 people are inside that cafe. two people were taken holding up a black flag with islamic writing on it. six hours after the situation began, three men ran from a back exit of the cafe. shortly afterward, two women believed to be employees also ran from the cafe and sprinted into the arms of police. the australian prime minister, tony abbott, says his thoughts and prayers are with the hostages. >> i can think of almost nothing more distressing or terrifying than to be caught up in such a

tollefson will find out his sentence for a charity scam. a bucks county judge will sentence tollefson this afternoon. he pleaded guilty to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars. prosecutors say he stole tickets and travel packages to sporting events with the promise of money going to charity, but instead, he pocketed that money for himself. tollefson said during his plea that he's been battling addiction for decades. he could spend more than 30 years behind bars and may have to pay more than $300,000 in restitution. six minutes after 4:00 now. to the casino crisis in atlantic city. today is the deadline to save the trump taj mahal. the owners of that casino say its main workers union backed out of a deal that would have kept the casino open and saved 3,000 jobs. the union now has until 5:00 p.m. today to drop its appeal of a court-ordered cost-cutting move that cancels workers' health insurance and pension plan. the taj is set to close december 20th. it would become the fifth of the city's 12 casinos to shut down

this year. trump plaza, revel, showboat and the atlantic club have all closed since january, leaving about 10,000 people out of work. all right, now to this bitter news. it's a tough morning for eagles fans after last night's loss to the cowboys. and you knew it was going to be a long night when the eagles fumbled the opening kickoff and dallas jumped out to a 21-0 lead before the eagles even had a positive yardage. the eagles did battle back. chris folk had two touchdowns. darren sproles added a score in the third quarter as the eagles rallied to take the lead, but it was a brief one. the cowboys and dez bryant were just too much down the stretch. bryant had three touchdown catches and the birds lost 38-27, giving dallas first place in the nfc east. new jersey governor chris christie's choice of seating at last night's game caused quite a stir on social media. the governor seen celebrating dallas touchdowns as he sat in a box next to cowboys owner jerry jones. my, my, the people were tweeting

about this. nbc 10's tracy davidson is live in our digital operations center. fans. teams more than a little upset with governor christie this morning, and they are taking to twitter and social media to talk about it. here's the video again, so you can watch it. christie was all smiles as he high-fived and celebrated when the cowboys scored. he was invited to sit in the owners box with jerry jones for last night's game at lincoln financial field. the dallas cowboys win moved them into first place in the nfc east, as you know. that could be another reason why this video has fans so upset. take a look at some of the reaction from twitter and some of the most heated tweets came from philadelphia councilman jim kenny. in one of the tweets, he said "hey fat blank christie, kiss jerry jones's blank in his box in dallas, not across the river from philly. you are just a creep!" and in another "dhani jones just

bit of a warmer day. highs around 47-48 for philadelphia. also, we're going to see that glowing orb in the sky called the sun that we haven't seen in quite a few days across the region here. but rain is moving into the picture again. meteorologist bill henley back in a moment to tell us when it arrives. black lives do matter. >> at sunday's church services across the country over the weekend, many worshipers were dressed in black. leaders at some african american churches encouraged this as a show of solidarity for the families of the unarmed men killed by police. this comes as tens of thousands have been holding rallies across the country calling for justice and equality. today, the family of dr. martin luther king jr. will appear at a hearing over the late civil rights leader's prized possessions, two of them, anyway. the hearing will decide the fate of his nobel peace prize and his traveling bible, the one president obama used to be sworn in during his second inauguration. king's daughter, bernice king

says her brothers want to sell those items. they claim their sister removed the items from their father's estate and hid them. friends of the alleged victim of a gang rape at a university of virginia frat house say they encourage the victim to contact police. three of the victim's friends say they were wrongfully portrayed in a recent "rolling stone" article as uncaring people who were more concerned about their reputations than the victim's well-being. in that article, the alleged victim said she was gang raped by seven men at a fraternity house in 2012. an independent investigator has been hired to look into allegations and how the school handled the case. 15 minutes after 4:00 now. a former cia official who oversaw the agency's interrogation program says the senate report that was released last week threw the cia under the bus. jose rodriguez headed the counterterrorism section. he says that report on harsh interrogation methods betrays intelligence officials and will erode their trust in future presidential administrations. and former vice president dick

cheney and other critics of that report echoed rodriguez's concerns, but republican senator john mccain, who is a former prisoner of war, defended the senate intelligence committee report. he says what we need to do now is "come clean, move forward and vow not to do it again." a report on recent secret service security lapses is expected to be released today. lawmakers asked for an independent review after the september 19th incident when a man jumped over the fence at the white house and made it all the way into the first family's residence. that breach and several others led to the resignation of former secret service director julia pierson. a new case of mumps in the national hockey league is causing concern for players and the people around them. look at this. pittsburgh penguins start sidney crosby showed the telltale symptoms of a swollen, chipmunk-like face this past week. he's been sid lined after testing positive for mumps. crosby is one of at least a dozen players from five teams who have come down with that

highly contagious disease. flyers general manager ryan hexall says he is concerned for his players and they're taking extra precautions. >> wash your hands and vaccines and everything else you can do. we've done everything we can do to protect our players and our staff. >> at this point, no one on the flyers is showing any symptoms. mumps was thought to be eradicated with vaccines, but people often skip their booster shots, and over time, the immunity can wear off. a preliminary hearing is scheduled today for a philadelphia attorney who's accused of paying to have sex with a teenage girl more than 20 times. prosecutors say brian meehan had sex with that 14-year-old girl on all of those occasions at his law office in center city. meehan worked at one penn center at 16th and jfk boulevard. prosecutors say the teenager testified to a grand jury that meehan told her he knew she was 14 and also told her that he had had sex with a 12-year-old. a couple accused of selling the

teenager as a sex slave and holding her inside this germantown home is also facing charges. also happening today, the trial is scheduled to begin for this man accused of killing a south philadelphia bartender. police say in june 2012, omar wright stabbed george fox twice in the chest while fox was working at t-bar's bar at eighth and jackson street. investigators say wright and his police robbed that bar. donations are pouring in to help the family left homeless by a fire in delaware county. the fire that killed a woman and left a man in critical condition. a look here at some of the items that have been dropped off at the lower chichester volunteer fire department. a 62-year-old woman was killed in that fire early saturday morning. three children and their father were hurt. the kids are expected to be released from the hospital in the next few days, but their dad is in critical condition. investigators believe the fire started on the back porch, but they're still searching for an exact cause.

a different delaware county family is getting help from the red cross after fire destroyed their home on 22nd street in chester yesterday. the family of eight was able to escape after the basement of the home caught fire. firefighters had some extra obstacles to overcome after one of their hoses broke and they had to run back to the truck to pull another inside. the cause of that fire also still under investigation. well, today is the deadline to sign up for health insurance under the affordable care act. you have to enroll by the end of the day today in order to have coverage beginning january 1st. and if you need some help signing up, team members with independence blue cross will be out this morning at two busy septa stations. they'll be at jefferson station at 12th and market in center city and at the 69th street transportation center in upper darby from 7:00 until 9:00. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> a cloudy weekend and a cloudy start today, but it is dry. this is a live view looking across the delaware of center city from the adventure

aquarium. and the clouds are actually helping things out this morning. this time of year, we'd normally see the temperatures drop into the 30s, but this morning, it's a bit warmer. 43 degrees right now at philadelphia international with a little bit of a breeze out of the north-northwest at 9 miles an hour. really not expected to go warmer than that during the day. cape may completely dry. you'll see the clouds break in cape may during the morning, and then this afternoon a good deal of sunshine, into the upper 40s this afternoon at the shore. right now temperatures don't look bad for the entire area. horsham and chester springs both at 41 degrees, while it's 43 in wilmington, quakertown and doylestown have just dropped into the upper 30s this morning. those numbers will come down a little bit more, but slowly coming down. atlantic city at the airport is 38 degrees, but a ride along the coast, it's in the low 40s. vineland is 42. and look at the low 40s for newark, middletown and dover. not bad at all this morning. but the clouds will finally break today. we will get some sunshine breaking through to help the

warming process back into the upper 40s this afternoon. so, breaks of sunshine today, but then this is what we're watching for tomorrow. looks like a big storm system, and it is a fairly sizable one, but by the time it gets to us, it's not looking all that impressive. you can see rain showers approaching the st. louis area. those have a way to go before they get to us. so, today we will be nice and dry with clouds thinning out. it's tomorrow that we'll see these rain clouds arrive during the afternoon, but not everybody's going to see the rain. 8:00 this evening, they're moving into the ohio valley. then by early tomorrow morning, about this time tomorrow, it's western pennsylvania that will see the first rain drops. we'll still be dry. we'll be dry through the commute tomorrow morning, and then in the late morning, you can see central pennsylvania getting some rainfall. just taking its time coming into the area. this is the future rain and snow, but it's just showing rain showers as we go into the afternoon, moving into the lehigh valley and into the pocono mountains. so, it's not a very rainy event,

but that will be here tomorrow. for today, after we start with clouds, we'll see more and more sunshine with temperatures that will top out in the upper 40s. there is some chillier weather ahead. i've got the seven-day forecast coming up in the next half hour. >> all right, bill. we'll enjoey the upper 40s while they last. a check of traffic now with jillian mele. >> good morning, chris. following an accident out of maple shade. the northbound side of route 73 at the off ramp for route 38, you can see right here, this accident involves an overturned vehicle. fire crews and police were out here earlier and a lot of that activity has cleared, but right now, right behind me, the tow truck is on the scene working to get that clear, but unfortunately, it is still out there right now. so, that jug handle is going to be blocked in the meantime, but it should be out of there in the next few minutes. that's something we will continue to follow. checking drive times, on 95 right now, pretty average, about 13 to 14 minutes both ways between woodhaven and the vine. the vine street expressway is clear. we are following an accident on the northeast extension. it's on the northbound side right as you approach the exit
