[ screaming ] at least 14 passengers injured after severe turbulence rocks a

dipping his toe in the 2016 presidential waters, we have a new poll and talk to chuck todd in a few minutes. >> see you in a few minutes. get to our top story on a wednesday morning, police on alert, theater owners on edge a that is massive hack against sony pictures has taken a dangerous turn. nbc's joe fire has covered the signer attack from the very beginning. joe, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the new york premiere for the movie "the interview," which was scheduled for tomorrow night has now been canceled. sources tell cnbc, sony is going forward with maps to release the film, but it will support theaters in they decide not to run it and now one major theater chain, carmike cinemas, is pulling the film after treaters in threatened by hackers. the ominous threat from the sony hackers, who call themselves guardians of peace, says the world will be full of fear, remember the 11th of september, 2001. the threat is aimed at movie theaters planning to show "the interview", a sony pictures comedy about the fictional assassination of north korean

leader, kim jong-un. the film is due out on christmas and the hackers say, soon, all the world will see what an awful movie sony pictures entertainment has made. sony has not commented on the threat. one theater chain has already said that it won't carry the film. i believe others will follow and by the time this film is supposed to come out, most of the theater chains in america will have said they won't carry the film. >> reporter: the department of homeland security says it is aware of the threat, but at this time, there is no credible intelligence to indicate an active plot against movie theaters within the united states. l.a. 's police chief says his department will take extra precautions in theaters. >> we have had conversations with theater management and there have been conversations with sony. >> whenever there's any chatter or threats, we make sure that there's strong presence in any place that we could but we feel very safe. >> reporter: the stars of "the interview," seth rogan and james franco, are now canceling appearances, including one scheduled tonight with jimmy fallon. federal investigators say they are closing in on the source of

the signer attack, including the part of the world where it came from. meanwhile, sony is now facing two class action lawsuits filed by former employees who feel the company is to blame for stolen private information. >> the amount of personal information that was stolen makes it pretty likely that at least some of the employees somewhere around the world will suffer identity theft. and that will cost them money. >> reporter: so far, only the one major theater chain, carmike, has made the decision not to run "the interview." carmike has 238 theaters in 41 states. some are suggesting the signer attack could be the most expensive corporate hack in history, with estimates ranging anywhere between $100 to $300 million. matt? >> all right, joe fryer, thank you very much. sean henry served as executive assistant director of the fbi, overseeing signer terrorism investigations. he is now president of crowd strike, which specializes in signer security. sean, good to see you. good morning. >> good morning.

>> we know this group, guardians of peace is credible in terms of their ability to get into a corporate computer system and distribute private information. how do we find out if they are credible in terms of carrying out violence on american soil? >> i think that's what department of homeland security and the fbi are doing, they are evaluating all of their intelligence sources. they will be looking the signal's intelligence and coordinating with the intelligence community. this is something that the fbi and dhs will take very seriously. >> i read the statement that they released and it almost sounded too stereotypical, the halting english, the weird grammar. it sounded like the worst of the threats north korea used to level against south korea, you know, fire rains from sky type thing. is it possible it's a day version, meant to draw our attention to a place like north korea when it could be somewhere else? >> certainly could be. what toward do attribution when looking at attacks on computer systems. investigators will be looking for artifacts in those systems to tray to lead them to who the culprits r >> looking for artifacts some, forensic investigation.

do they have informants inside the hacking community? >> they do, but similar to what you do at a crime scene, looking for dna, finger prints or shell casings, doing that in the network, looking at malware and the tools the adversaries use. >> could this be an inside job? >> certainly could be. something investigators will look at, any time there's an attack, this he will look at the totality of the circumstances to determine who actually caused it. >> now that this organization, whoever they are, guardians of peace, has upped the ante in this way, do we need to change what is perhaps a stereotypical image of hackers that we have, of the guys in the dark room with their nose buried in a computer screen and the fast food containers around? do we have to change that view? >> i think you're absolutely right. we have crossed a rubicon here and what we are seeing nation states who are potentially using the signer networks as a weapon to deteriorate and destroy networks. this is a big change. it's not just the ex-filtration of data, which we have seen for many years but there's a huge change and there has to be policy to address this. >> sean henry, sean, thank you

very much. i appreciate it >> thanks. by the way, we want you to weigh in, head to today.com and let us know if the threats that we're now hearing from guardians of peace will affect whether you go to see this film, "the interview." we will have the results of that later on. right now, we go down to savannah in washington. matt, thank you. now to that brutal taliban massacre at a school in pakistan. this morning, the death toll stands at 142 and most of the victims were children. and for the first time, we are seeing inside building where this all unfolded. nbc's chief global correspondent, bill neely, has more. bill, good morning to you. >> reporter: yes, good morning, savannah. i have just been inside the school behind me, a scene of mass murder. the bullets, the blood, the books still like where so many children died. you know, this city, peshawar, has seen a lot of violence, massacres even. but nothing quite like this. this was a bloodbath like no other in pakistan, a has sack

over the innocents, their shoes and glasses scattered. they came to this hall to learn first aid, how to save lives. they lost theirs when seven gunmen burst in and began shooting. dozens of the children were murdered in this hall and it's no exaggeration to say that every inch of this floor is covered in or smeared with blood. it's a scene of utter horror. the gunmen then moved to classrooms, hunting down children without mercy, until army commandos began to fight back. all seven taliban gunmen, wearing suicide vests, were killed, but they had murdered more than 140 by then. >> we are all angered. we are all sickened. i think there is nothing that could happen worse than this. >> reporter: in the hospitals, dazed survivors, more than 100 children were injured, medical staff overwhelmed. after the massacre, the mourning. this attack has stunned

pakistan. the army and government promise revenge, but for now the slaughter of so many children has simply left this country numb. what struck me inside, savannah, was the silence, the deadly silence, with more than 1,000 school children should be. the pakistan air force has now launched air strikes against the taliban, three days of national mourning has been declared but it will take much, much longer than three days for the sense of shock and disbelief here to fade. savannah? >> just an absolute atrocity. bill neely in peshawar, pakistan, thank you. closer to home, at least 14 passengers on a u.s.-bound flight are recovering from injuries after their plane encountered severe turbulence and was forced to make an emergency landing. nbc's tom costello covers aviation for us and here this morning in washington. tell us what happened. >> this was very bad indeed. this was an american airlines 777 on a very long flight from seoul, south korea to dallas. and veteran business passengers who have flown for decades say

they have never seen anything like this. [ screaming ] it's video not verified by nbc news, which seems to show the frightening moments tuesday after an american air lines flight headed from south korea to dallas with 240 passengers and 15 crew members on board was forced to make an emergency landing in tokyo. extreme turbulence had rocked the aircraft for nearly 40 seconds. >> without warning whatsoever, the plane just dropped. >> reporter: passenger mark stanley started recording video and snapping photos right after plates, glasses, even a beverage cart were thrown all over the cabin. >> hit your head. >> reporter: this plate broke into pieces after hitting one passenger in the head. >> everyone has shoes on, so much broken glass, there's plates and everything throughout there. >> reporter: after an hour and a half, the pilot i a numbers onned he needed to land. >> got on and said, look, this is -- we are not going to even try it, the plane is in no

shape, doesn't have enough crew. just unwilling to go further. >> reporter: one passenger tweeting "landed in tokyo after massive, massive turbulence on aa 280, broken glass, et cetera, flying inside cabin. some were injured." gave on thely if the were taken to the hospital with non--life threatening injuries and as many as nine passengers were treated at the scene. at least one passenger is reported to have suffered a broken arm. others had bumps and bruises. this plane is believed to have flown through a very bad winter storm, really typhoon winds. 240-mile-an-hour winds. and people were just thrown about. all the cabin belongings thrown about. this was very serious. >> interesting that the plane wasn't diverted to avoid that weather. >> exactly. i think that will be a question that they are going to have to ask. >> tom, gaed to see you as always. >> nice to see you. >> send it back to the gang in new york. >> savannah, thanks, 240-mile-an-hour winds. >> should not be flying anywhere near that un-unh. natalie's a check of the headlines now, including news from the president signing the

spending bill? >> that's right. the president signed that $1.1 trillion spending bill news night that keeps most of the government running for the next nine months but the department of homeland security will only receive its money through the end of february and that limit was demanded by republican leaders to appease critics of obama's immigration measures. the search is over this morning for a man accused of shooting and killing six people. investigators found bradley stone's body while searching near his home in pennsburg, pennsylvania. officials say stone died from apparent self-inflicted stab wounds. police say on monday, stone shot and killed his ex-wife, nicole, and five of her family members. ebb survivor, dr. rick sake rah, is returning to liberia, the west african country where he contract the virus. next month, he will resume working as a medical missionary. he plans to spend four weeks at a clinic outside monrovia where he contracted ebb outside of august. sake rah says he feels great and that doctors have said he is now

actor steven collins addressing allegations that he molested young girls a people magazine exclusive interview, the former "seventh heaven" star admits to inappropriate behavior. nbc's stephanie gosk is here with that. >> reporter: steven comes calls it inexcusablinexcusable, five occasions with three different underable girls. in a 1,000-word statement to people magazine, the actor describes the incidents but also says he has never done and has never wanted to do anything like it since. >> i wish i could just call the whole thing off. >> reporter: steven collins used to be nope as the past and father on "seventh heaven about" but the details of his personal life have taken over his life and image. he writes to people magazine in 1973, he ex-positioned himself twice to a preteen girl and describes a third occasion with the girl in his housele. "i moved her hand in such a way that caused her to touch me inappropriately.

it was a completely impulsive act and it's haunted me ever since to think of what i put her through." collins also admits to exposing himself to teenaged girls in both 1982 and 1994. >> that last incident in 1994 was when stephen says he hit rock bottom and realized he absolutely had to get help. >> once again -- >> reporter: the actor explains that he has been in therapy continuously for over 20 years and has not had an impulse to act out in such a way since. >> hi, dad. >> reporter: collins adds that nothing inappropriate ever happened on the set of "seventh heaven." >> i'm really sorry. >> reporter: revelations first came to light earlier this year in an audiotape released by tmz. >> with a 10-year-old, okay. >> no she was 11 and then, like, 12 and 13. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: collins says the tape was secretly recorded by his now-estranged wife, fay grant, during a marriage counseling session in 2012. the couple are now going through divorce proceedings.

grant says she gave the audiotape to the police, but did not leak it to the press. >> i will put this in the past. >> reporter: so far there have been no criminal charges against collins and the victims themselves have not gone public. to the extent he has coverage both civilly and criminally, he can say whatever he wants now the statute of limitation is over. so, maybe in his wake he is going to tell the truth. >> reporter: the statement includes an apology. collins writes, "i deeply regret the mistakes i have made and any pain i have caused these three women. i admit to, apologize for and take responsibility for what i did." since these revelations surfaced in the fall, collins' career has come to a standstill. he lost multiple tv and movie roles. collin was says he has made amends with one of the victims but has not contacted the other two for fear of, in his word, opening old wounds. >> all right, stephanie gosk. stephanie, thank you very much. let's get a check of the weather now from al.

investigation? this morning, we're back. oh, boy. here we go again. why is this man drill nothing our front door? >> just drilled right through t charged hear a lot of money. >> yeah. >> reporter: why is this one destroying our lock then running away from our cameras? i guess he doesn't want to talk us to. we can't believe our eyes. after all, it was three years ago i first exposed that locksmith. renting this home in suburban new york, we hired this licensed locksmith to install simple locks on our door. he says any real locksmith would pick it easily. he showed us in just seconds. he says this job should cost about $100. >> there's no damage to the lock, a minimal charge to a cust mannered the proper way to perform that service on a lockout. >> i'm locked out of my house. >> reporter: then we had our producer call a locksmith, saying she is locked out. this guy didn't pick our lock,

he ripped it off with pliers. then we had to buy a new lock, from him. in fact, back in 2011, our expert says one after another overcharged us, including this guy, who drilled our lock, then demanded hundreds of dollars in cash. even saying this -- >> need to go to the bank or something? >> reporter: hold on, go with him to the bank? that's when i jumped in. just trying to figure out why you're trying to charge a woman more than six times what expert says that job should cost? >> what do you want me to tell you? >> reporter: this first guy shows up and drills our lock right away, destroying it. happy to sell us a new one. price tag, $170. can i ask why you drilled right through that lock without trying to pick it first? >> emergency. >> reporter: this next locksmith pulls out the drill, too. another ruined lock. price tag, $210. you trying to rip someone off? >> i cannot pick that lock. >> reporter: remember, it can be picked. >> thank you for coming. >> reporter: but this guy doesn't even try and bess to drape our rainy day fund with a whopping price tag. he tries to shimmy the door open, but then quickly pulls out his drill. in seconds, we're in, but it will cost us, $415. >> the lady is outside in pouring rain. you think i'm gonna stand for half an hour trying picking the lock. >> you think it takes half hour to pick the lock? >> yes, to me.

>> we will have our experts show us. >> okay. >> reporter: yes, we had a new expert on site and he spent only five and a half minutes picking it and gets us in, no problem. you don't think you overcharged? you still think you should have drilled through the lock after seeing how fast he can pick it? >> yes. >> reporter: you you have to say that, i guess. in our new batch, nearly every locksmith charged us $200 or more. what's the bottom line here? >> bottom line, consumers are being ripped off, it's trouble. >> still happening even after we exposed them years ago. still a nationwide problem, jeff. no one is doing anything about it but you. >> reporter: we are happy to. there's a security issue here, too, only one of the locksmiths in this new batch asked us for i.d. to make sure we even live at that house. specters say they should never open a single door without verifying the address of the house matches your i.d. the best advice, guys, do not wait until you need a locksmith in that emergency. find a reputable company and store it in your phone so you have it when you need it

we have breaking news at this hour. a former the past five years in a cuban prison has just been released. 65-year-old alan gross was arrested on espionage charges back in december 2009. eventually was sentenced to 15 years. but this morning, nbc news has confirmed he's on his way back to the united states. let's turn to andrea mitchell, the chief foreign affairs correspondent. you have been following this for years. what can you tell us about the release? >> he's at andrews air force

base. he's expected to land in a few hours. alan gross is a contractor arrested for bringing equipment into cuba. he was convicted and jailed. he's from suburban, maryland. he'll be returning home. he may make a statement after he lands here in washington after they've checked him out. there were americans -- particularly, u.s. senators, pat leahy, senator udall, bipartisans, very actively involved. in getting him out of prison. and the key to this is also that he faced three cubans who were convicted and been in jail for 15 years in federal prisons here in the united states. they were convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage. the cubans had a fair trial and there may have been a prisoner swap. it is a foreign policy issue.

we expect that as soon as later today, the president may(2 be going -- addressing this publicly. and saying that they are instituting a terror designation against cuba. and we heard john kerry with the fight against ebola in africa. and other things they have done. this is a huge obstacle to loosening the economic n2o cf1 o sanctions. the embargo itself would be up to congress. but a lot that president obama can announce. and i'm told to change cuban-american policy, the key to this breakthrough is alan gross coming home. >> essentially a sign of relations between the broader policy between cuba and the united states. very quickly, his health. he's lost a lot of weight and staged hunger strikes in prison. >> right. we're told he's all right. they're not putting him directly in the hospital.

allegation and it is supposed to be taken very seriously, bowl is falsely accusing someone. when someone rapes person, they go to prison. that should also happen to the person that was wrongfully accused --s that what wrongfully accused an innocent victim" and remarked specifically on beverly johnson's allegation. you remember the whole damn day but you were drugged? just saying. another more serious, because we expect someone's family to stick with them, big developments as far as criminal case. l.a. county district attorney says it will not file criminal charges against bill does any a 1974 accusation because the statute of limitation has passed. >> that is the problem with all the cases, people say why do you bring charges? happened 40 years ago, 30 years ago on the case? >> most recent case happened six years ago. that one is still sort of -- has come forward. remains to be seen. >> did he settle a civil case with one woman, undisclosed. >> by the way, imagine if this did go to a criminal court,

proving that someone was drugged? you have no blood samples. you have no evidence. so even if charges were filed, what a -- i mean, a challenge for the justice system to -- the prosecutor in this case with nothing, no rape kit, no blood test, nothing. doesn't mean it's not true but just means it's very hard to prove. >> how our justice system is designed. it's interesting there. those are the development there is in that case. >> this happens, hear about this every time this year, john hopkins university mistakenly sending out literally hundreds of acceptance letters, 294 students who were rejected got acceptance letters on sunday. now, two days before, they had gotten gearals or had been denied early as mission. >> an e-mail blitz, right? >> yeah. so school official apologized, said this was humor error, somebody who works for a contractor, electronic

communications, pulled the wrong e-mail list of addresses and those -- they should let them in. >> i think so >> 294. you can fit them in. >> yeah. >> fit them in. come on. urge got go to the weed out classes. remember they used to call the -- i went to temple and freshed, larger universities, when there are like 200 kids in one class, had he stayed is the weed out because the first week, x-amount will drop off, the second week, after the next test. so many. so, they are weeding out the people who really don't want to be there or who aren't dedicated. >> i never heard of that although that makes sense, aid professor say, you're still here? >> didn't weed you out? >> didn't expect me. >> basically those classes, are you really there to commit to the four-year challenge of university? >> yeah. >> four years? now six years. not my choice. my dad is like you got four. not even answering your calls. four years and one day. >> that's -- no malice there but just such a heartbreaker for those kids. >> i know.

it. >> despite all these difficulties she had, i mean, literally to her last breath, you were in love with each other. >> it was -- we were so enmeshed and that was positive at times and negative at other times. you know, she protected me so fiercely from people so that the statistics that you would, you know, expect from someone my able in hollywood, you know, listen, i was 11 months old when i started bus a cab driver said, hey that baby's cute, she should model. we all of a sudden made money. so my mom didn't take any alimony or anything from my father. i mean, she divorced him without even telling him. she was rash. she was -- she was -- you know, she was the kind to -- she would be seen -- >> she helped you be the person you are today. >> yes. >> god bless her. all right. >> so full of amazing stories and really so many people i think can learn something from it a story, courage and survival
