this morning philadelphia's police commissioner has a message for his officers following the killing of two members of the nypd. and later today, friends and family will remember the victims of a montgomery county killing spree. this morning we're taking a closer look at the help that's out there for crime victims. we won't see really any sunshine today. take a look at the radar. rain is on the way, so make sure you keep that umbrella handy. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm rosemary connors. let's get right to meteorologist michelle grossman with her first alert forecast. and michelle, we saw it on the radar, that rain is coming. >> that rain is coming and it will stay with us a couple days, at least through christmas eve. the threat of showers stays with

us. here's a live look outside, waking up to clouds in spots early this morning and we'll see more clouds than sunshine today. and yeah, keep that umbrella handy, because you may need it today. temperatures are cold this morning. 26 in mt. pocono. so many spots below freezing. 31 in allentown, 20 in lancaster, 29 in philadelphia, 22 in atlantic city. it feels colder than that in many spots. feels like just 19 in mt. pocono and it feels like 22 degrees in atlantic city. so, again, keep the umbrellas handy today. we'll see those clouds on the increase. more clouds than sunshine and then the threat for showers, especially later on this afternoon and into the evening hours. and the threat stays with us, again, on tuesday and also wednesday. so, for today on this monday, by 8:00, 31, by 10:00, 35, and by noon we're looking at 37 degrees. dry right now on the roadways. let's see how things are doing out there. let's go to first alert traffic reporter jillian mele. >> good morning to you. let's start out in new jersey with a minor problem in maple shade. route 73 southbound near stiles,

the right lane is blocked with debris in the roadway, but traffic can still get by. tying up one lane. montgomeriville, an accident at welsh boulevard. and looking good on 95 at girard. past the betsy ross on the northbound side, we are dealing with construction there. now to tragedy in brooklyn and the nypd officers killed during an ambush. people came together last night at a candlelight vigil to honor the two men. mourners left flowers at a makeshift memorial for rafael ramos and wenjian liu. this morning, we are learning more about the attack and the suspect. detectives say ismaaiyl brinsley told people on the streets to "watch what i'm going to do" just before the shootings. on brinsley's instagram page, he wrote "they take one of ours, let's take two of theirs." investigators believe brinsley was motivated by anger toward the police following the recent grand jury decision in ferguson and new york. >> didn't solve anything. the only thing that this did was

take fathers away from their children. take kids away from their parents. >> president obama has offered full support and federal assistance to the nypd in the wake of the killings. president obama is also showing his support to philadelphia police commissioner charles ramsey. he recently named philly's top cop the co-chair of the presidential task force on 21st-century policing. nbc 10's katy zachry is live outside police headquarters in center city, where the commissioner has a message for his own officers in the wake of what happened in new york. katy? >> reporter: that's right, rosemary. we had a pretty long conversation with commissioner ramsey. he tells us he wants his officers to have a measured approach after the deadly police shootings in new york this weekend. he wants police here in philadelphia to be vigilant and not overreact. now, philadelphia police commissioner charles ramsey is right now in the national spotlight after president obama chose him as a leader of the task force on 21st-century policing. it was created after the

violence and police protests in ferguson, missouri. >> hopefully, this tragedy now makes everybody take a step back and think about what they're doing, think about what they're saying. this is a time for thoughtful discussion. and i don't want to lose that opportunity for that discussion to take place. >> reporter: and the commissioner went on to talk about an incident that happened this weekend, saturday night in north philadelphia, where a number of his officers practiced that vigilance he's calling for in the face of an active gunman. i'm going through the details of that case and i'll have that coming up for you in the next half hour. reporting live in front of police headquarters, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. >> thanks, katy. we'll check back with you then. also. officers in new jersey are taking precautions following the alert after the shootings in brooklyn. we spoke with camden's fraternal order of police about what the union is advising its officers to do. >> right now i would really have

about race relations. i think that it's a huge problem in the united states right now. >> you know what's beautiful, this is when you know america's changing, when young white people are standing up across the world saying black lives matter. >> the protesters marched for hours, making it to the steps of the art museum, even shutting down some city streets, but the protest was peaceful, and police say there were no arrests. new from overnight, crews are trying to figure out what caused a fire at a halfway house in camden. flames broke out at the building along magnolia avenue around 11:30 last night. everybody made it out safely and there are no reports of any injuries. right now the search is on for two masked men who robbed a 7-eleven in montgomery county overnight. police on the scene at 54th and city avenue in lower merion township told us that the men were armed with guns when they walked into the store right around 12:30 this morning. one worker was hurt. police aren't sure exactly how much cash the robbers grabbed before running off.

today, souderton area high school will hold a vigil for two of the victims of last week's killing spree in montgomery county. ninth grader nina flick was killed. her 17-year-old brother, anthony flick, a junior at the high school, was seriously injured. he is the only survivor of the attacks. police say the violence happened in three locations in montgomery county, harleysville, lansdale and souderton. members of four generations of one family were killed. the killing sparked an intense manhunt for former military veteran bradley stone. police say stone killed his ex-wife, her mother, grandmother, sister, brother-in-law and niece. his body was found two days later about a half a mile from his house in hanover township. stone had cuts on his body, but authorities have not released the cause of death. in the wake of the killings last week in montgomery county, today a crisis response team will be reaching out to those affected by the brutal murders.

nbc 10's jesse gary is live at the meeting site in lansdale. jesse, what services will be offered? >> reporter: rosemary, they'll be doing crisis counseling here at the parks and rec building in lansdale. that's just to help people immediately with the aftermath. and then as time moves along, supportive counseling as well. the six murders allegedly committed by bradley stone a week ago prompted a call from police for this type of help. investigators say the ex-marine killed members of his ex-wife's family, including joanne coder and patricia hill. both women were shot at fifth and pierce streets, shaking neighbors to the core. >> even if people don't feel that they necessarily need something right now, we realize that a lot of times these -- the effects that victims may feel is a boomerang effect. you don't feel it right away. >> reporter: coming up in the next hour, some of the emotions that are still haunting people in this community and how

they're trying to cope. we'll have that at 5:00. live in lansdale, montgomery county, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. there is a new clue to report in the disappearance of shane montgomery. divers searching the schuylkill river yesterday found a set of keys belonging to the missing west chester university student. the 21-year-old disappeared early thanksgiving morning after leaving a bar on main street in manayunk. last night, st. john the baptist church in manayunk held its tree lighting in honor of shane. people decorated the tree with green ribbons as a symbol of hope for answers in shane's disappearance. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> and a good monday morning. i'm meteorologist michelle grossman. we are starting a trend, a threat for showers over the next couple days, and a bigger threat on christmas eve, causing travel issues. but today, we'll see more clouds than sunshine and yeah, we have a threat for showers, especially in the afternoon. so, maybe grab the umbrellas, keep them handy in your bag. by tuesday, we're going to be

rain not too far to the south, and this will be the threat for today for those showers on the light side. same story tonight. we're going to see light rain into tuesday morning and then that heavier rain comes in on wednesday. for today, mostly cloudy and cold. we may see a few peeks of sunshine, but otherwise, we're looking at a pretty cloudy day, 38 to 41, winds out of the east at 5 miles per hour, and that will help bring that moisture in. seven-day forecast. we do have a warm-up, but it will be wet as we head throughout the next couple of days. mostly cloudy today, chance for those showers. rain likely on tuesday. otherwise, we're looking at cloudy skies, 52. up to 60 on wednesday. that's christmas eve. that's a big travel day. and we're looking at rainy and windy conditions. by thursday, christmas day, we'll drop back into the 50s and bring back more sunshine, but it will be windy. then by friday, temperatures colder, 50 degrees. 48 on saturday. then we're going to end the weekend pretty cold, temperatures in the upper 30s. it will be breezy under partly sunny skies. the time right now is 4:11. fortunately, we don't have any rain to deal with this morning, but as drivers are getting up,

they may have some problems to keep in mind out there on the roads. let's check in with nbc 10 traffic reporter jillian mele. hey, jillian. >> good morning, rosemary. if you're waking up around center city, philadelphia, we're not reporting any accidents on the highways there, but as we head out to the suburbs, we are dealing with an accident in montgomeriville. this is welsh road right at bell run boulevard, so use caution if that's part of your commute this morning. we haven't been told that that portion of the area's blocked off, but as always, leave your safely extra time. 95 at cottman avenue, you can see both directions out here we have some construction, part of that long-term construction project that's set up between bridge street and cottman. and as you can see, it's not causing any delays, though. rosemary? >> thank you, jillian. you may know it as the bada bing from the tv mob show "the sopranos." now the real-life new jersey club is getting more national attention. we'll explain after the break. plus, what does hypnosis have to do with one of the most notorious missing child cases in the country? and honoring a hero. the award this local man will receive for risking his life to save others from an out-of-control gunman.

new this morning in delaware, a firefighter is recovering after he was injured in a three-alarm blaze in wilmington. fire broke out at the valley run apartments on butternut lane right around 9:30 last night. part of the property partially collapsed, and crews were ordered out of the building. 12 families have been displaced. one person went to the hospital. no word yet on a condition. the cause here is under investigation. fire investigators in new castle county are also looking for the cause of this deadly blaze in claimaymont in the har house apartments. it happened yesterday morning. one person died, another went to

the hospital. the fire caused about $1 million in damage. 38 families who lived here lost everything. >> all these families, it's christmastime. it's awful. you know, what a sight to see. i've never seen anything like that before. >> the red cross is now helping some of the affected families. neighbors say they are also chipping in to help the victims. this morning police in chester county are on the hunt for two people whom they say carried out a violent home invasion in west whiteland township. take a look at these two suspects. investigators say leonard bernard knocked on a 76-year-old woman's door on saturday night, pretending to be with a home health care company. he allegedly then forced his way inside, tied up the woman and stole her jewelry. bernard and his alleged police, breanna mitchell on the right, are facing a number of charges. a chester county man will spend the rest of his life in prison for shooting and killing his longtime girlfriend.

grego gregory twineman pled guilty in first-degree murder in the death of janica woods. prosecutors say it was premeditated. before the murder, twyman changed has twitter profile picture to a gun and another picture to a shotgun shell, the same used to kill woods. prosecutors say it showed he planned the crime. a montgomery county teenager will spend life behind bars for the stabbing death of his girlfriend last year. 18-year-old tristan stahley will spend life in prison without parole, convicted in the killing of siller. authorities say he stabbed her most than 20 times on a hiking trail in skippack. a court hearing is scheduled today for the suspect in a decades-old child murder case in new york city. pedro hernandez is charged with killing 6-year-old etan patz in 1979. it wasn't until 2012 when police

arrested hernandez after his family members alerted investigators that they believed he was responsible. a manhattan judge has ruled a video-taped confession can be used in court, but the judge is now weighing whether or not to allow testimony from witnesses hypnotized in the 35-year-old case. a ruling could come as early as this week. hernandez has pleaded not guilty. etan patz vanished in 1979 while walking to his bus stop in new york city. his body was never found and he was one of the first missing children to appear on a milk carton. a man who risked his life to save others during a deadly shooting in monroe county, pennsylvania, will be presented with a national heroes award. the men you see right here -- take a look -- this is ross township parks director bernard cozen. this is the day after the shooting inside a municipal meeting in august of 2013. cozen helped tackle and disarm the gunman. today he will be honored by the carnegie heroes fund commission.

good to start this morning right near the conshohocken curve. you can see a line of green in both directions. no slowdowns to report. drive times pretty average right now between the blue route and the vine, about 12 minutes. so, nothing to deal with as far as incidents go on 76. but in maple shade, route 73 southbound right near stiles avenue, we have some debris in the roadway. that is blocking the right lane. taking this map in a little bit, turnpike southbound right as you approach route 73, exit 4, there is an accident but all lanes get by. rosemary? >> thank you, jillian. the past year has been a challenge for a veteran nbc news anchor. we're talking about tom brokaw. coming up after the break, he'll update us on his health. christmas is now just a few days away, and that means crunch time. so, don't be surprised if you see more brown delivery trucks rolling around your neighborhood today.

u.s. senator chris coons of delaware is in west africa today, taking a firsthand look at u.s. efforts to stop the spread of ebola. this morning he'll hold a news conference from liberia. senator coons is the first member of congress to visit liberia since the ebola outbreak began. he'll arrive back in delaware tomorrow afternoon. nbc's tom brokaw is reporting some good news. he says his cancer is in remission. in a note to colleagues, the veteran newsman called it "very encouraging news." brokaw announced he will soon begin a drug maintenance program after months of chemotherapy. last february, the 74-year-old revealed that he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer affecting blood cells in the blood marrow. u.p.s. expects today will be its busiest shipping day of the year. u.p.s. predicts that workers

will deliver 34 million packages. that's double the amount of any normal day. to handle the workload, the company has handled 95,000 seasonal workers. hey, time is running out. if you have waited until the last minute to go christmas shopping, be aware, the crowds are out there. nbc 10 visited the cherry hill mall yesterday. it took shoppers anywhere from 7 to 20 minutes just to find a parking space. and then there was the foot traffic inside. some shoppers told us that they plan to return during late-night hours to avoid the crowds. >> if i have like last-minute gifts, i would definitely come at night. >> at midnight? >> midnight, yeah, like midnight, 1:00. if they're open at 24 hours, i'd come at 1:00 in the morning because that's when not a lot of people are there. >> well, the cherry hill mall isn't open 24 hours, but it has extended hours from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. today and tomorrow and then it will be open from 7:00 to 6:00 on christmas eve. now your nbc 10 first alert weather.
