this is that breaking news. widespread rain and dense fog, a combination that will make for a tough day on the roads for all of those holiday travelers. this is a live picture of the rain coming down right now in cape may. and yes, it is one foggy christmas eve. here you can see it's a tough view right here of the center city, philadelphia, skyline from across the river, a fog that will slow down people on the roads and people at the airports around the region. first alert radar showing us the system that's pushing through on this christmas eve. a lot more rain on the way. it's going to be an all-day event, and we're with you for it. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm chris cato on christmas eve. also a first alert weather day. nbc 10 has live, team coverage

tracking the rain and fog that is bound to delay travelers and those last-minute shoppers on this christmas eve. let's begin with nbc 10 meteorologist brittney shipp. and you know, we've been talking about this rain that's been coming for about a week now. so, here it is, just in time for one of the busiest days of the year. >> i know. unfortunately, the timing is going to be off with this system because it's moving in right as people are trying to get home for the holidays. so, if we look outside right now, we're seeing a very foggy start to the morning. and a closer look at our radar shows all the rain starting to move in. it's coming up from the south. so, that was the first area to see the rain, pushing into parts of atlantic city, dover, now into philadelphia and the suburbs and slowly moving into the poconos. you can see how large this system is, so, all of that moisture is heading our way as we head into the rest of today. it's going to continue throughout your entire day. the other thing we're checking out is our decreased visibility. dense fog expected throughout most of the morning hours. we're down to a quarter of a mile in mt. pocono, down to 2 miles in allentown, 2 1/2 in

northeast philadelphia, down to 3/4 miles in atlantic city, 1/4 mile in toms river. so, this is definitely going to lead to delays, especially as folks are trying to fly out of town. a closer look, we're already seeing good amounts of traffic there on our highway. and as we head into the rest of today, we do expect to see temperatures warming into the 60s. it is going to be a mild christmas eve. 48 degrees right now with rain coming down. for a closer look on traffic, let's check in with first alert traffic reporter katy zachry. good morning. >> good morning, brittney. from that shot, i see a few more headlights than typical at this early hour. and if you're out this morning as we are, on my way in, i saw a lot of patches of dense fog. so, be aware of that. 422 at egypt road, there are slick roadways, areas of dense fog, so definitely be aware if you are headed out on your early holiday travel plans. closures to tell you about in bucks county. this is middletown township. the bridge, which is maple avenue, route 213, is closed between old lincoln highway and bristol road.

that's closed for a long-term construction project. also on 76, the spring garden on-ramps to 76 eastbound and westbound, also closed as part of a long-term construction project. and taking a look at your majors in pennsylvania, 76 and 476, no construction for you to be aware of, but 95 we do have some long-term construction both north and southbound, so just be aware of some lane restrictions. chris? and now, a live look inside philadelphia international airport. we see many travelers there at the ticket counters waiting on their departures, getting ready for their christmas eve travel. delays are expected today. so far this morning we do know that one flight, at least, has been canceled. a us airways flight from williamsport to philadelphia. about 100 flights were canceled yesterday. and things did clear a bit into the evening, allowing airlines to catch up. but you can see a lot of people already at the ticket counters getting ready to start an early morning of christmas travel, hoping to get aed of any delays

that will occur because of the rain and the weather, but we are expecting some delays. airport officials told us yesterday they expect delays today. and there could be more problems because of what's happening in other parts of the country. severe weather moving through and now moving towards the north. storms hit the southern u.s. yesterday. heavy rain and possible tornadoes backed up airline schedules in atlanta and charlotte. the storms also killed at least four people, damaged homes and businesses and caused thousands of power outages. now, here's the number you want to keep handy if you have a loved one flying into or out of philadelphia international today. if you have a flight to catch yourself, 1-800-phl-gate. that toll-free number will give you updates on incoming and outgoing flights. > we continue with our ongoing coverage of holiday travel and the impact we're seeing. nbc 10's jesse gary in stormforce10 checking out the roads. jesse, where are you and what's it looking like? >> reporter: chris, we're on the

schuylkill eastbound just past the grays ferry exit headed east towards i-95 southbound, and we'll head down past the airport. the roadways are covered with water, not flooding, but they're definitely slick from a nice, steady rain that's falling right now. i'm noticing a little bit higher volume of traffic than we typically see at 4:00 in the morning. could be a lot of people trying to get out and on their way before the worst of the storm hits. so, a little bit of traffic but not too bad, and of course, wet roadways, so you'll want to try and go slow. we're going to make our way east on the schuylkill all the way down to 95, then we'll head south on 95 down towards the delaware memorial bridge. we'll check in every few minutes and let you know how the roadways are and if we come across any problems. live in stormforce10, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. chris? >> all right, jesse, thanks. stay safe out there. no matter where your christmas travels take you, be sure to get important weather updates right at your fingertips through the nbc 10 first alert weather app for your smartphone or tablet.

just download it now free from the app store. but check this out first. we're following some breaking news, and this is going to sound a bit like deja vu near ferguson, missouri, here. investigators tell us this morning that a police officer shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at the officer. now, this happened just two miles outside ferguson, missouri. this happened late last night just after 11:00 p.m. the "st. louis post dispatch" is reporting that a crowd is now gathering at the scene of where this police-involved shooting occurred and police have arrested some protesters. we're monitoring this story. we'll keep an eye on things. we'll see what happens with that crowd there, and we're checking all of the feeds and making calls in that area to find out what's happening. we'll bring you the new information as soon as we get it on that breaking news out of ferguson, missouri. new from overnight, philadelphia police are looking for two robbers who shot a man in olney. it happened at ogontz and olney avenues around 1:00 this morning. investigators say the victim was inside the courtyard of the

regency apartments when two men approached him. they stole $100 and then shot him in the side. he's in stable condition at the hospital. two philadelphia police officers were hurt in this accident. look at this. their cruisers collided on the way to a call. it happened at 22nd and montgomery avenue in north philadelphia. the officers were responding to a report of gunshots. both were taken to temple hospital and are expected to be okay. also new from overnight, this is video of a car on fire from one of the traffic cameras on i-95 in bucks county. police tell us the car flipped over, crashed, caught fire. one person was injured. this happened around midnight. the accident was cleared. well, it is a time-honored tradition for hundreds of people in and around philadelphia who are getting ready for christmas guests at their house. they have to get their tree, and they get those, many of them do, from terminey brothers. matt delucia is live in south philadelphia, where i'm sure we are jealous of what matt is

smelling right now with the baking going on. >> right? >> reporter: a little bit of a crowd that's been forming for the past couple of minutes out here in south philadelphia. we have a light, steady rain for the moment, but these folks, at least, have this little overhang here by terminy brothers. we're talk to talk with mike here, who's been out here since 12:15 this morning sp. so, why do you come out this early on christmas eve? >> well, these guys, they're not here today, but we usually try and beat them every year, and, well, this year, i guess they've decided not to come. and yeah. >> reporter: and i can see why. we have a little bit of rain out here. so, what have you been doing all night? >> just been talking to each other, just talking about whatever, like, whatever happened today. >> reporter: well, it's a tradition. everyone's out here. you're out here with your family. do you look forward to this every year? >> yes, i do. i've been looking forward to it for like a month now.

>> reporter: all right, sounds good, mike. we'll let you get back to your family out here. you've got a little ways to go. they don't open the doors until 6:00. we've seen workers go inside, but right now it looks pretty empty. they're out back baking. they usually have a band playing christmas music. so, it's a time-honored tradition in philadelphia. we've seen the line grow by a few people every few minutes, but definitely not as many as normally because we are experiencing a little rain out here. we'll be out here throughout the morning, though. live in south philadelphia, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >> i'm sure the rain won't even stop people from showing up there later this morning. well, if you do need to get to the post office, be sure to do that early. many will close at noon today. and the blue mailboxes will be emptied earlier than usual as well. now, your regular mail delivery will not be affected. all post offices will be closed tomorrow. and if you use septa, there are some changes today, so be sure to check the schedules there. city transit, frontier and victory divisions with the

norristown high-speed line along with some regional rail lines are operating on a special schedule. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning. as we head into the rest of today, we are going to continue to see rain coming down, heavy at times, also dense fog is expected throughout most of your morning hours. we'll continue to see our temperatures warming well above average, close to 20 degrees above average, pushing into the 60s as we head into the afternoon. also, take a closer look at your christmas day forecast. but as far as today is concerned, we do have a first alert issued for today. we do expect to see foggy travels, big airport delays, and we'll continue with the wet conditions throughout today. so, just be careful if you're hitting the roads, allow extra time, because we could see ponding on some of our highways and some of our freeways. there's a live look outside right now. you can already see the fog. our visibility has been decreased in most areas, down to about 1/4 mile throughout parts of the poconos stretching into atlantic city.

but for philadelphia right now, rain is coming down, 48 degrees. our humidity's at 89%, wind speeds out of the east at 7 miles per hour. it feels like 45 degrees. and a closer look at our visibility, down to 1/4 mile here in the poconos, down to 2 miles in allentown, 2 in reading, 6 in pottstown, 3 miles in philadelphia, 4 in wilmington and about 3/4 miles in atlantic city. take a look at mt. holly with visibility down to about 2 1/2 miles. so, here's where all the rainfall is. you can see it's moving up from the south, it's pushing into most of our area at this time. we have a lot more rain to go, so this is going to continue throughout all of today. our future weather shows we are going to see some of the rain picking up in intensity close to about noon. that's more of a moderate rainfall that's going to be coming down, but again, this is going to be an all-day event. we will see a little bit of a lull as we head into our evening hours, but another round moves through overnight and then windy conditions settle in for us. for tomorrow, we'll dry out. we do expect to see our conditions picking up with the wind speeds. so, 48 degrees right now in

we'll stay on top of that and bring you any new, important information as soon as we get it. here's what else is happening. australian terrorism officials have arrested two men connected to a group that's accused of plotting to kill a random member of the public in sydney. this arrest comes one day after heightened terrorist warnings in the aftermath of that deadly standoff in that cafe in sydney. the 16-hour standoff ended when police finally stormed the cafe in a barrage of gunfire. two hostages were killed and the gunman was killed as well. lawyers for the accused boston marathon bomber have made another request to delay the start of the trial. dzhokhar tsarnaev's attorney says they need more time to research tsarnaev's family overseas and also say they don't want the jury deliberating around the second anniversary of the attacks. that's because right now the trial is scheduled to start on january 5th. but the defense would like to push the trial back to september. two movie theaters in new castle county are planning to show "the interview," the movie

that's the focus of the sony hacking scandal. penn cinema in wilmington and westtown movies in middletown will show the movie tomorrow on christmas day. sony entertainment pulled the seventh rogan comedy last week after hackers threatened any theater that showed it, but the u.s. said there is no credible evidence of a plot and believes north korea was behind the cyber attack. movie-goers are curious to see what all the controversy is about. >> we saw the trailers for this movie before all this stuff happened, and it looked like it'd be a pretty funny movie, so it would have gone to see it. >> now, penn cinema tells nbc 10 it has coordinated with wilmington police but is confident that extra security will not be needed. happening today, a former police officer will go to court to face charges in the murder of his ex-girlfriend. steven recogniozniakowski is scd for a preliminary hearing. up to last week, he was a police officer for the colwyn police department. last week, police say he shot and killed valerie morrow and

shot and killed her teenage daughter at their home in glenolden. morrow's husband shot and killed rozniakowski. he has a history of stalking ex-girlfriends. in april, he was arrested on 75 harassment-related charges in plymouth township. in spite of that, colwyn kept him on the police force there. a suburban mother of three is accused of having a sexual relationship with a high school student, which resulted in a very public arrest. 42-year-old iris gibney turned herself in to police in upper pottsgrove yesterday. investigators say on november 15th, an officer found her in a sexual encounter with a 17-year-old boy at a park in pottstown. detectives say gibney met the boy through her daughter's cheerleading team and texted nude photos of herself to the boy. >> rape is rape. if she's taking advantage of someone who doesn't know right or wrong or that doesn't, you know -- it just -- it's not right.

>> now, the 17-year-old pottsgrove high school student told investigators that he met gibney at a high school football game earlier this year. 4:20 now. a montgomery county restaurant helped raise more than $1,100 to help a family that lost almost everything when police say a neighbor burned their house down. the daughter of a fellow officer who works at the texas road house restaurant in nearby roirzburg wanted to help out by hosting a fund-raiser. police say donna krupp set the fire that burned down the house because she was upset about her son's arrest. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning. you're taking a live look at south philly. take a look at that foggy picture. and it's wet out. you can already tell. that's going to be the scene as we head into the rest of today. so, we'll continue to see rain heavy at times, foggy conditions expected for us. and so, that's going to lead to some travel delays, which is why today is a first alert weather day. dense fog expected, warm

conditions. we'll push into the 60s by the afternoon. wet conditions expected for us. and then we'll see our wind speeds picking up as we head into christmas day. but a closer look at our first alert. we do expect to see travel troubles. basis airport delays. and as we head into the rest of your christmas eve, warm and wet conditions expected for us. so, it doesn't feel very christmaslike, but this is the forecast for today. you can see those foggy conditions. and right now, conditions throughout philadelphia, rain coming down, 48 degrees, wind speeds. our visibility is definitely down, especially in the poconos, down to about 1/4 miles. 2 miles in allentown, 4 in doylestown, 2 1/2 in mt. holly. right along the shore, even, closer to atlantic city at the airport there, we're down to less than a mile. so, we are definitely seeing weather conditions that are going to impact traveling as you hit the road and also as you try and fly out of our local airports. but here's a closer look at all the rain moving in up from the south. we have a lot more rain to go, so this is going to be an

all-day event. as we head into the rest of your wednesday on this christmas eve, we'll continue with the rainfall. we could see anywhere between 1/4 inches to up to an inch and a half of rain. by noon, we expect the intensity to pick up, so moderate to heavy rainfall expected. we'll see a bit of a lull as we head into your 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. hours, but we'll see another round in our overnight hours, pushing into christmas day. lingering showers expected closer to 4:00 a.m. and then windy conditions are going to move in from the northwest. so, our current temperature's at 40 degrees in mt. pocono, 44 in allentown, close to 50 degrees. so, this is a warm start to the morning and we'll see temperatures pushing close to our record, which is 66. we should see highs in the low 60s for today. we are also going to start off with dense fog, rain heavy at times, and then temperatures will range between 55 and 62 degrees. wind speeds out of the south 10 to 15 miles per hour. and your seven-day forecast shows as we head into the rest of today, we will continue to see those temperatures dropping.

so, today we'll reach our peak at 62. by christmas day we'll drop right back down to 48 degrees by noon and then we'll see temperatures in the mid-40s as we head into 5:00 p.m. your seven-day forecast shows that we are going to see temperatures in the 50s for christmas day and friday. >> well, let's hope santa's reindeer are wearing their weather-proof harnesses tonight. it's going to be a messy one. let's see if it's messy on the roads right now for people hitting the road on this early christmas eve. nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter katy zachry has a look at that. pretty light out there right now, katy. >> it is pretty light. we're seeing a few more headlights than typical because a lot of people are off and probably want to get to their holiday destination. but volume is light. so, that, coupled with the rain and the fog, it's really not causing any delays we're seeing on any of our majors. this is a live look at 95 right at girard avenue, where you can see slick roadways, but drive times between cottman and the vine are still looking good. no volume to really back that up. 76 drive times along the conshohocken curve looking really good between vine and the 476.

because silver is fighting efforts to make sports betting legal in new jersey. silver says, instead, he wants a national framework to regulate sports betting. compulsive gamblers will now be just a text message away from getting help. a non-profit organization headquartered in new jersey is launching a 24-hour hotline devoted to helping those who struggle with that addiction. gamblers or friends can text 800gambler to 53442 and someone from the organization will reply shortly afterwards. well, some fast-acting firefighters in ocean county helped save a baby that was trapped in a minivan that went up in flames. that van caught fire on the garden state parkway in lacey township on monday. a volunteer firefighter was driving past when he saw the smoke and flames coming from the van. he and a second firefighter used extinguishers to put out the fire and then with the mother's help, they managed to unfasten the child's car seat and get the baby out of the vehicle. now your nbc 10 first alert weather.
