it's a tough christmas morning for a delaware family after fire tears through their home injuring one person inside. meanwhile christians across the area are already celebrating the christmas holiday in church and this morning many more will do so at home. and it will be a good morning for opening some gifts and staying inside. christmas day off to a wet start as we take a look at i-95. but the rain that we had all day yesterday is coming to an end. and we'll see the sunshine today. but something else, as well. good morning. this is nbc 10 news today. let's begin with brittney shipp and her first alert forecast.

now we're seeing some relief this morning. >> that's right. it's slowly starting to taper off and we will see some sunshine as we head into the afternoon. wind speeds are picking up as a cold front is moving through the area. that will help drop our temperatures, so it won't be quite as warm as it was yesterday. here is a closer look at our radar shot. you can see where the lingering showers are and they're moving through parts of south jersey, moving into the northern parts of delaware and into the poconos. but it's very spot city. and we'll start to dry out. right now 60 in atlantic city, 60 in millvale, 54 allentown, 54 pottstown, 54 in coatesville. and 59 in dover. as we see a drying winds coming out of the west, we will see our temperatures drop a bit today. 52 degrees on 56, that will be our range. so take a look at the wind speeds out of the west, 15 to 20 25 miles per hour, gusting up to 35 by the afternoon. new from overnight, we were

watching this, a big mess on the schuylkill expressway just cleared in the past half hour. there was an accident there that sent one person to the hospital. no word on that person's injuries. this traffic camera video shows where a car flipped over on i-76 near montgomery avenue. as officers were attending that accident, another car crashed into one of the police cruisers. no one was hurt in that secondary crash. once again, though, this cleared in the past half hour and east bound lanes are open again. and overnight, a house fire september one person to the hospital. it broke out around 12:30 this morning. one person was able to make it out safely. he's being treated for smoke inhalation but is expected to be okay. no other injuries were reported. the cause of the fire is under investigation. a spiritual start to christmas in philadelphia. nbc 10 was at the cathedral

basilica of st. peter and paul for midnight mass. the archbishop led the faithful in prayer. mass will also be celebrated later this morning at 8:00 and 10:00 and again at noon. christians from across the world gathered in bethlehem as they always do to mark christmas eve in the place jesus was born. the central manger square is decked out in white and yellow lights and a towering christmas tree. about half as many people made the trip to the west. analysts blame the war in gaza. ♪ from one bethlehem to another, churchgoers gathered in the lehigh valley up to that shares the name of christ's birth place. bethlehem, north hampton county. people have made christmas part of the town's identity for nearly 300 years. are you not alone on christmas. that's the message and the mission of a local clarity that offers comfort to homeless

veterans. jesse gary is live for us with this story. tell us about this program and the people it aims to help. >> reporter: for the past decade, members of the veterans group have been coming to places like logan square on christmas. the philadelphia -- west philadelphia nonprofit houses and cares for dozens of vets from the korean war to our country's current conflicts. twice a month including today, staffers gather donations and food from in-house stock and handing it out to homeless vets around the city starting in center city. >> there's a lot most of people out there that's worse off than we are. and we're trying to help them. whatever we have, if we can spread it around, we'll gladly do it. not a problem. >> reporter: and coming up, i'll tell you some of the things they will be handing out to the homeless vets here in philadelphia. live at logan square, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. pope francis celebrated

christmas eve with a late night mass. thousands gathered at st. peter's basilica for the pope's blessing. he said the birth of jesus christ showed the patience, closeness and tenderness of god. this is his second christmas celebration as pontiff. the holy father's visit still nine months away, but planning is picking up. organizers from the world meeting of families say they're tackling issues both large and small. everything from housing and transportation for the more than 1 million expected visitors to buying and storing millions of mass booklets and communion wafers. today some people will see "the interview". penn cinema is the only local theater fulling the film. sony pulled it after hackers threatened violence. the u.s. names north korea for those threats. in the film, two men are trying

to assassinate kim jong-un. sony changed its mind releasing the movie to monthly independent theaters. it's also available online. people can watch it on youtube and google play for about $6. you can also watch it through xbox. this morning police are looking for a man who tried to sexually assault a woman in west philadelphia last night. the woman was able to fight off the attacker. it happened around 8:00. according to witnesses, the man knocked down the woman, dragged her into an alley way off vine street. the attacker had a knife, but the victim had a stun gun and she tasered the guy and he ran off. in philadelphia, the red cross is helping a family rescued from rubble after the front of their house collapsed. this is the scene on roosevelt boulevard. fire and rescue crews pulled family members to safety. two of them were taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. and in bucks county, a house fire had firefighters salvaging the family's christmas gifts. look at this. the fire broke out around 8:00

last night on hilton avenue. everyone practice it out okay along with the gifts. investigators are still looking for the cause of the fire. police in ocean county are investigating a real tragedy this morning. a 2-year-old girl killed when a neighbor backed out of the driveway and ran over her. it happened yesterday afternoon along forest park circle in lakewood. it's too soon to know if the driver will face charges. in atlantic county, more woman are claiming their urologist inappropriately touched them. only nbc 10 was there as authorities hauled the doctor out of his office in handcuffs on tuesday. police have charged him with criminal sexual contact involving three of his patients. after our story aired, police say more than ten women came forward with similar accusations. no charges yet filed in those. in chester county, this log cabin never had a chance when fire broke out. one person was hurt when fire

started at this home on old wilmington road. crews fought the fire for several hours before the cabin eventually collapsed. 4:07 now. and this morning, workers at the centers for disease control and prevention in atlanta will being examined after an employee there was possibly exposed to the ebola virus. a lab technician may have come into contact with a small amount of ebola during an experiment. that person is being monitored for signs of infection and will be for 2 is days. less than a dozen workers at the ctc are also being examined. officials say the risk is low and does not extend beyond the lab. former president george h.w. bush remained in a houston hospital overnight after being taken there for shortness of breath on tuesday. a spokesperson said president bush had a good day yesterday and his prognosis is positive. it's not clear when the 90-year-old will be released. merry christmas as we head

city are not where they planned to be. spirit airlines canceled a flight to ft. myers last night. and people we talked with say the airline cannot get them to florida until tomorrow. spirit says it's working with passengers. a missouri company is recalling caramel apples because concerns over listeria. there may be a connection between the apples and a recent listeria outbreak that has killed at least three people and sickened nearly 30. the recall covers 31 states, including pennsylvania. the apples were not sold in new jersey and delaware. the fda advises not to eat pre-packaged caramel apples. the local christmas choir competition third place winners for the 9th to 12th grade division. ♪
