the plane was on its way from surabaya to singapore when the pielot climbed to avoid clouds. there were thunderstorms in the area around the time the aircraft disappeared. this is temperature third incident involving a malaysian air lyle airliner this year. this is bringing back memories of the mh370 that disappeared in march and still missing. that was carrying 239 passengers and crew. men mh 17 traveling from amsterdam to kuala lumpur shot down over the ukraine this summer. today more questions and more heart ache from families who just want to know what happened to their loved ones. >> reporter: there are 47 friends and family here. they're behind this corridor sequester ed from the media. we saw a few a little earlier.

they were as you imagine very distraught. they're looking for answers, trying to find out what happened. officials know where and when it dropped off radar. that should give a better idea of where it is in the java sea. going on 13 to 14 hours since it's missing and still no sign of the plane. back to you. >> heartbreaking. katie, thanks. mike bettes has been monitoring the weather situation overnight. what was it looking like when the plane vanished. >> there were storms in the area. it's not unusual this time of we're. it's the where southerly and northerly trade winds come together and produce weather. you can see where it took off and expected to land in singapore. the flight track would take it through the thunderstorm areas over the java sea. the problem is we have thunderstorms in that area now. for recovery efforts. we know the piloted ask to change at duty. the storm tops for 50,000 feet.
8:05 am
we get turbulence all the way to the top of the clouds. even if he was changing elevation, it may have not made a difference what sompt it's an unfortunate situation. they do their best to get around these things. it's an area loaded with thunderstorms today. thanks mike. former ntsb investigator with us now. good to see you. >> good morning lester. >> we see it in the summertime pilots deviating around thunderstorms. what is the danger of a plane crying at cruise level into thunderstorms? >> one of the big issues of these thunderstorms is activity within the thunderstorm. the up and downdraft, potential of hail and icing conditions. those types of winds and gusty wind conditions could compromise the structure of an airplane. creates moderate to severe turbulence in some cases extreme turbulence.
8:06 am
we saw this in air france 447. if you get into it, you may not be able to maintain control of the airplane. >> you mentioned air france. that was over the ocean outside of radar coverage. this was in full coverage at the time. if it fell from the sky or broke up talking a six mile fall to the ground or sea. wouldn't radar have picked up hits of metal falling? >> well in these dense thunderstorms, you can get the signal. you may not have a good reflective signal of the aircraft structure if broken up. you may have lost electrical signals from the aircraft. the transponder and radio communications were working up until a point. then they lost radio and transponder in this particular instance. that could show an electrical

problem on the aircraft due or prior to the loss of control or during loss of control. >> weather is the thing we all tend to look at. you as an investigator know you approach these things that any possibility is alive until you rule it out. what could cause a plane to disappear at cruise level from radar? >> the best evidence we have thus far -- we have no real investigative activity taking place until we find the wreckage and get a voice recorder and flight data recorder. from the investigator standpoint it's what kind of weather information did this crew have prior to their departure, what was the flight path planned, and why was it they didn't see this or at least monitor it better flying through this convergence zone? the big issue here is you have a line of thunderstorms, have to have a way out, have to have a plan b if you will.
8:08 am
it's going to be interesting to see what the crew may or may not have had as far as information to make a decision to outclimb this thunderstorm. talking 50,000 foot activity they should have been able to see a lot on their radar and get help from air traffic control and the airline dispatch folks. that's a big issue to see a what in fact may have been the decision maker for this crew. i don't see anything other than that right now because we don't have a lot of information. it looks like weather is going to be a primary factor that's going to be investigated by the teams from indonesia singapore and malaysia. >> we appreciate your input. thanks so much. a frantic rescue operation. betty has more. >> good morning. a dramatic rescue is underway. 400 passengers and crew are

chuck todd is moderator of "meet the press." good morning. let's start with the presidential race. i mentioned it's heating up. what's the first thing you're looking for as far as candidates are concerned? >> how quickly they decide to get in. the shock so far is jeb bush dipped his toe in before anyone else. i don't think anybody would have said the first republican to make a serious move would have been jeb bush unless he was getting out, instead he's getting in. the big question is when does hillary clinton make her candidacy official? she'd love to put it off slons she can. march 1st april 1 can she wait until memorial day? those are the questions. when do you start running? >> this congress was third least productive in history. republicans take both houses of congress. what do you think? will this be more effective? how do you think they'll work

defend his record. i think this rising economy is the biggest game changer in 2015. if this economy is truly hitting the accelerator pedal in improvement, it will change politics in washington. a lot could get done. a rise in the president's popularity rating makes him get stronger. it changes the 2016 race. >> what do you coming up next? >> we're going to delve into the topic you've spent time on. obviously this issue between african-americans, law enforcement community and now new york city political leaders and the rank and fall of nypd. it's all a fire storm. bill bratton is at the center of it. >> it's a hot topic. thanks. the blushing bride that had no idea she was after seeing everything, i think this is the one. but let me take one last look. sure. take your time. built-in nav heated seats for mom
