because if it's sunday, it's "meet the press." that breaking news is this a potential clue just spotted in the search for that air asia plane that went missing on its way to singapore. here at home a 10-year-old boy hit and killed by a police car, and this morning, witnesses claim the cop made a big mistake. first alert radar this morning tracking showers for parts of the area. a dry start for most of us as we head into a monday. good morning and welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm chris cato. let's begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. and bill, we had really warm temperatures over the weekend. >> yeah 50s yesterday. we will be mild again today, though not as warm as yesterday. it's really not cold this morning. the temperatures because of clouds overhead are in the 40s for most of the area right now,

but we are tracking some wet weather. and you can see it at the shore. it's a live view of cape may, beach avenue from the marquis de lafayette hotel. just some light rain streaming across delaware and into new jersey. it's not destined for philadelphia. this will stay to the south and east, and it will stay on the light side. the most impressive of it at this time is moving through southern cumberland county, moving to the east so getting ready to move past maurice river and into cape may county. 30s north and west where skies are going to be clearer during the day today, but clearing will happen for delaware and south jersey too. 42 degrees right now in philadelphia looking for upper 40s this afternoon. we'll go through it hour by hour with the future weather when i come back in ten minutes. right now, let's check in with first alert traffic reporter jillian mele. good morning jillian. >> good morning to you, bill. we're not reporting any accidents out there. it's a quiet start on the roads. we do have some of that normal construction, though like on 76 westbound, the spring garden street on-ramp. that's still closed as a result of a long-term construction project in that area.

heading outside to montgomery county, route 309, right at the entrance to the pennsylvania turnpike 309 is clear. p.a. turnpike is also pretty quiet. and the area bridges all clear right now. no accidents and no delays to report. chris? 4:02 now, and we have breaking news in the search for that air asia flight 8501 that vanished more than 24 hours ago with 162 people on board. nbc 10's tracy davidson is live in our digital operations center monitoring all of the news on this developing story. tracy, what have search crews found? >> chris, just over an hour ago, an indonesian official announced that a search plane had spotted some suspicious objects about 700 miles from where the plane lost contact. here's what we know. the air asia flight took off from indonesia's surabaya airport, heading to singapore. less than an hour into the flight, the pilot contacted air traffic control to request an increase in altitude because of rough weather, but that request was denied. right now, search crews are moving in the direction where those objects were found, but they're not sure yet if they are

part of the missing plane. and the man in charge of search-and-rescue efforts said the plane is likely "at the bottom of the sea." we are also learning more about the pilot, who is described as experienced with more than 20,000 flying hours. air asia is based in malaysia. this comes five months after the downing of malaysia airlines flight 17 over ukraine and nine months after the disappearance of malaysia airlines flight 370, which, as you know still remains a mystery. we'll continue to monitor any new developments coming from the search area. live in the digital operations center tracy davidson, nbc 10 news. new from overnight, we have confirmed that a row home fire killed two people. it happened last night on spruce street in reading. someone who was in the area at the time of the fire snapped this photo. we found it using our social media discovery app, banjo. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire, but officials do confirm that two people died. it's not known how many were inside the home when the fire started. in bucks county police say

a man who shot an intruder who was trying to break into his apartment will not face charges. this happened last night along bobolink drive in bensalem. investigators say the burglar had hit one apartment already and was trying to get into another when shots were fired. a witness in the first apartment says she saw the man touching himself inappropriately. then he dove through a glass window with her dog. >> what he was looking for, we're not really sure but one homeowner, he confronted one homeowner who stood his ground and fired twice, shooting him -- hitting him both times. >> now, the suspect who was shot is in critical condition this morning. this morning, gloucester county prosecutors will begin piecing together a tragedy involving a 10-year-old boy and a police car that some say was speeding. that boy was crossing the street around 7:00 last night at delsea drive and paul street when he was hit and killed by a franklin township police cruiser. nbc 10's jesse gary joins us

live this morning from the franklin township police department. jesse, a question that everyone is asking here is did the officer have his lights on flashing and sirens on when he was responding at the time the boy was hit? >> reporter: chris, that is still unclear. they're trying to piece that together. i have reached out to the department to find out what their policy is governing the use of lights and sirens. the accident happened just after 7:00 last night as the victim and two friends walked to a sleepover. the boy's family says a 10-year-old crossed delsea drive, which is also route 42 and was hit and killed by the officer. the two other children were unharmed. witnesses say the patrol car did not have flashing lights and a siren activated. police have not confirmed or refuted that account. coming up in the next 30 minutes, i'll tell you about a policy change one police department made to the use of lights and sirens. live in franklin township gloucester county new jersey jesse gary nbc 10 news. chris? another deadly pedestrian accident. here a man was hit and killed by

a car yesterday evening in burlington county. it happened on south church street between academy drive and st. david drive in mt. laurel. police say the man, whose name has not been released was walking in the northbound lanes when the car hit him. the driver stayed on scene after the crash. 4:06 now, and happening today in montgomery county several people who were charged in a penndot corruption scandal are scheduled to appear in court. ten people are accused in an overbilling scheme that prosecutors say cost taxpayers $1.2 million. two penndot managers and eight contractors are charged in this case. the attorney general says those managers took kickbacks to look the other way, ignoring falsified time sheets and mileage reports. today, seven of the defendants will have a preliminary hearing. today, a philadelphia lawmaker will call for support of police and for changes in the relationship between law enforcement and the public. state representative curtis thomas will hold a news conference at 11:00 a.m. a statement from his office says thomas will call for the expansion of police advisory committees, regular police

meetings with the community and additional bike police. ♪ ♪ everybody's life matters. >> in northeast philadelphia a church spread the message that black lives matter. a large group gathered at the baptist worship center on james street for a special service yesterday. they prayed for peace and talked about ways to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community. >> know that all lives matter. but we are bringing the church and the community together just to keep these issues before the people. >> the church also has a program in which police officers talk to members of the community about how to interact with police. the temple university basketball team honored its campus safety team yesterday. this photo was taken at the game against delaware state. the announcer introduced each member of law enforcement during a time-out. and to top it all off, temple won the game 66-56. happening today, preparations are under way for

the annual new year's eve fireworks show along the delaware river. this afternoon, workers will load all of those shells that will be used on the barges at the navy base. the sugar house fireworks show on the waterfront is at 6:00 p.m. to midnight on new year's eve. maybe i can stay up for the 6:00 p.m. version. well the mummers are putting finishing touches on their performances for the new year's celebration, but this year's parade will be a bit different, definitely shorter. organizers say declining membership soaring costs and elaborate productions have prompted some changes. this year the parade has a new, shorter route, which is expected to save money on police overtime. the mummers say they expect about 8,000 participants. now, about a decade ago, that number was as high as 12,000 but the mummers say fewer performers will not take away from the show. >> it's amazing. i've been doing this a long time. in the last five years or so it's been -- like every year they top the show and music. it's unbelievable.

it makes you feel so proud inside. >> now, if you'd like to get a sneak peek at the mummers' parade, you can check out mummers fest at the pennsylvania convention center. it kicked off yesterday and runs through wednesday. well at least it ended with a victory over the giants even if it did end much sooner than we would prefer. the eagles finished the season with a 10-6 record yesterday, capping it with a win over new york at the meadowlands. mark sanchez with two touchdowns and 292 yards. final score eagles 34 giants 26. but the birds missed the playoffs for the first time in the chip kelly era. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> we're tracking some showers this morning but not everybody's seeing the rainfall. showers across delaware and south jersey won't last. they'll be clearing out during the day. and during the day, we're in for another mild one. it was in the 50s yesterday. but today we'll be in the 40s. and later this week starting tomorrow, in fact it's going to be turning colder. wintry cold returns for much of

the rest of the week so enjoy the temperatures today while they're still here. 35 degrees in allentown. seeing some clearing skies. that has allowed the temperatures to come down. clouds over northeast philadelphia, 42 and rain is falling in south jersey. millville is 43 degrees. and you can see the streets are a bit damp in cape may. nothing heavy about the showers, and it's only rain showers. too warm for anything else. you can see clear north and west, but delaware and parts of south jersey seeing that very light rainfall into central delaware and cape may. and even into salem, parts of gloucester and cumberland counties millville is getting a few rain drops right now. the steadier rainfall is pushing through cape may county sea isle city seeing light rain and that's about to get a little heavier, but not much. future weather hour by hour shows skies will be clearing north and west. 9:00, 36 degrees, but the temperatures will turn around. 41 degrees at 9:00 in philadelphia. and a slow warm-up as the skies clear. 10:00, still some clouds in

delaware and south jersey but as the morning progresses into the afternoon, we will see more and more sunshine and the temperatures into the middle to upper 40s in philadelphia this afternoon. so it will be drying out during the day, turning to some sunshine this afternoon. the morning clouds end and the temperatures in the 40s. but it does get a lot colder than that. the extended future weather when i come back in ten minutes. looking so far into the future that he will look into the new year. that's bill henley for you. 11 minutes after 4:00 now, and it's time get a check of the highways and see how the roads are on this early monday morning. nbc 10's jillian mele has that. hi jillian. >> good morning to you, chris, to you at home as well. not too many problems that we're dealing with out there so far this morning. we don't have a single accident. we are following some of the normal spots of construction. we actually just had some wrap up on 76 in the last few minutes. it was right here on the westbound side near 30th street. you can see it's very clear, though. we're not reporting any lane restrictions, no delays. so, 76 is looking good. so is 95. same situation for drivers on the blue route this morning. if you're waking up in delaware

4:14 and we're following a developing story this morning. the first large group of survivors from that fire aboard a greek ferry has arrived at a port in italy. nearly 50 people were on board the rescue ship but more than 200 passengers and crew remained

stranded on the burning ferry between italy and albania in the adriatic sea. officials say one person has died trying to escape the fire. >> your mama right here! your mama said do it! come on. >> oh, my god! >> come on. >> video captured the eemotions there after a little boy jumped from his burning apartment building into a neighbor's arms. this was early christmas morning in birmingham, alabama. six people were hurt in the fire, four of them children. again, you'll see the child here fall into the neighbor's arms. investigators say food cooking unattended on a stove started the fire. a surfer in california survived a shark attack over the weekend. the man was pulled under water by a young great white shark who bit down on his hip. the surfer was able to paddle to shore, where he used the leash cord from his surfboard to make a tourniquet. two doctors who just happened to be at the beach were able to

help the man until he was air-lifted to a hospital. amazing. here at home philadelphia police are investigating an armed robbery outside temple university hospital. a hospital employee was robbed late last night along north broad street near tioga in north philadelphia. the campus police department sent text alerts to students letting them know about the incident. two people are in the hospital after this car crashed into a home in longcrest yesterday. the car landed on its roof. philadelphia police tell nbc 10 the car was speeding when it tore through a backyard took out several tree branches and crashed into a porch knorr street. police say the female passenger was taken to einstein medical center in critical condition. the driver a man, was in stable condition at the hospital. this morning, friends and family are remembering a young girl who captured the hearts of people nationwide as she battled a devastating illness. hannah ginion lost that battle with krab yea disease yesterday, shy of her second birthday.

her family posted this message on facebook -- >> hannah was called home to be with the angels. she went peacefully. please keep us all in your prayers during this difficult time." and hundreds attended a vigil in hannah's honor at the john fitch school in levittown. the disease is a rare genetic disorder that damages the nervous system. her family says if she had been diagnosed at birth, she could have gotten better. now there is a new law to test for crawbay and other disorders in newborns. >> she changed the world and we're so blessed to have everybody here for us because it's something you can't go through alone. >> we wouldn't have gone through this if it wasn't for everybody here all these people. they all played their own little parts in every step of the way. >> well there is no cure for crawbay disease. it is very rare and only affects about 1 in every 100,000 people. medical experts in west africa say malaria is killing thousands of more people than

ebola. according to doctors, the push to stop ebola has actually hurt the country's battle with malaria, which is a preventible and treatable disease. in guinea malaria is the leading cause of death in children under 5. in adults only aids kills more people than malaria. back in the u.s. the ebola response coordinator called a recent cdc lab accident unacceptable. a lab technician mishandled materials during an experiment and may have come into contact with a live ebola virus. officials say that incident poses no threat to the public. 4:18 and now to texas where george h.w. bush could be released from the hospital soon that word from the former president's spokesperson this morning. the 90-year-old will remain in the hospital for the time being after he suffered shortness of breath last week. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> off to a cloudy and dry start on boathouse row. this is a live view from the mellon bank building.

clouds are overhead. they're actually helping things out this morning. 27 degrees. that's the normal low temperature this time of year for philadelphia. look at this. we're nowhere near that. 42 degrees right now with a wind at 13 miles an hour. so, it does feel like it's in the 30s this morning. 35 degrees. completely dry in the pocono mountains. you'll see lots of sunshine on the slopes today. and the temperatures will be in the middle 30s this afternoon. so nice day for hitting the slopes. 30s north and west, while it's in the 40s, low 40s for the i-95 corridor. the farther north and west you go, the colder it is. levittown, language horn all at 40 degrees and look at the 30s from richboro to doylestown and chillier north and west. quakertown is down to 34 along with kindersville this morning. we are tracking rain but the warmer temperatures in cape may and into portions of south jersey including cumberland and gloucester counties. but farther north and west no rain for philadelphia, just clouds to start with that will not last all day. all the rain stays to the south and will be ending in delaware

and south jersey this morning and then clearing will take place. you can see the clouds are thinner north and west. we will see that clearing during the day today. so a cloudy start, keeping things mild but the temperatures will be turning colder tonight after reaching into the middle 40s this afternoon. we'll be dropping down into the cold zone tomorrow morning. 20s north and west at 7:00 tomorrow morning, 29 degrees. for pottstown and lancaster, just above freezing in philadelphia. then tomorrow afternoon, with northwesterly winds, that's going to keep us in the upper 30s tomorrow. and the cold will stay. we'll have the full seven-day forecast coming up in the next half hour. 4:20 on monday morning, as you get ready to make your drive. let's see if there's anything out there that might slow you down. nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter jillian mele has a look at everything going on. jillian? >> good morning, chris. starting off in chester county with a check of things on route 202. off to a really good start. we're not reporting any accidents and no delays. your drive times on 202 pretty good, as you can see.

about 11 minutes in both directions between route 30 and 76. 76 is looking good right now. and heading north to the lehigh valley, all of the majors in the allentown area are clear right now. that includes the northeast extension. no accidents to report there. 22 looks good. and so does 78. this is a live look at 78 right at lehigh street. as you can see, just a few people on the roads right now. chris. it is a sign that the holiday season is coming to an end. the christmas village in center city closed up shop yesterday. hard to believe it's over. the open-air german christmas market opened at love park on black friday offering people a place to shop and enjoy food from around the world. on its final day, visitors enjoyed live music while picking up a few gifts that santa forgot to leave under the tree. a sinister review for sugar, new recommendations on how many sweets you should really allow yourself every day. please say five. plus the changes coming in the new year to credit cards, and why you'll likely be getting a new one.

it's 4:24 and police in delaware say an 18-year-old led troopers on a chase in a stolen car before crashing it. the chase began early yesterday when an officer spotted the car at old baltimore pike and salem church road in newark. the trooper realized it was stolen and tried to pull it over. the car hit a curb at old coach road and henderson hill road in case you're following this at home. 18-year-old michael gordon now faces several charges. six children are charged with trespassing after philadelphia police say they broke into a school a school that has been in the headlines a lot recently. investigators say the kids stole markers and other items from the walter palmer charter school. the alleged burglars are all between ages 10 and 12 and are

not students at walter palmer. police think the kids broke in because they heard the school was shutting down this week. a burlington county catholic school has raised almost half the money is needs to stay open. st. paul elementary school in burlington has raised about $120,000 so far, according to the school's website. the diocese gave the school a deadline of january 15th to raise $250,000 or shut down. the diocese says it can no longer fund st. paul because of declining enrollment. some changes are coming to credit cards in the new year and no we're not talking about a credit line increase for you. one of the biggest changes involves new technology to protect against fraud. companies are now embedding a computer chip in cards that generates a unique transaction code every time the card is used. consumers will receive their new cards by the end of 2015. some companies have already begun mailing them out. there's new recommendations now about how much sugar you should have in your diet. the dietary guidelines advisory

committee is now recommending that people limit added sugars to 10% of their total daily calories. currently, the average is 16%. the committee says there's strong evidence showing that sugar increases the risk of obesity, diabetes high blood pressure and tooth decay. well if you've managed to get your hands on some tamiflu this season be grateful. doctors say that antiviral drug is in high demand and is hard to find. researchers expect a nationwide tamiflu shortage to last through february. the problem stems from an early, larger-than-usual demand from that drug. they say this year's flu vaccine isn't as effective against the current strain of flu that has been showing up so more people who have been vaccinated are still coming down with the flu. now, tamiflu can't cure the flu, but it does shorten the duration and ease the symptoms for many patients. proof of the power of texting. new research shows that fewer than half of children who need two doses of the flu vaccine
