reindeer pajamas by grandma. >> chewing on the wrapping paper. >> yeah. missing for more than a day and a half officials now saying it and the 162 people on board are likely quote, at the bottom of the sea. nbc's katy tur is following this for us from singapore this morning. katy good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sav an a. day two and no official word on the state of that plane. unconfirmed report earlier today that debris was spotted. it was quite a distance from the last-known location from the flight. if we learned anything from mh 370, it's to take all these initial report with his a fwrangrain of salt. the head of the indonesia search and rescue team is preparing people for the worst. our evaluation of the coordinates that we received suggested it is under water. our presumption now is that the aircraft is under the sea. still that is only an educated

guess. teams in the air and at sea are scouring the area around the island near flight 8501's last known location. the island is halfway between serbia and singapore. malaysia and singapore are assisting in the effort. maritime patrol aircraft that helped in the search for mh 370. in indonesia, another day of waiting as relatives hope for a miracle. as the hours pass without answers, eerie similarities are being made between this flight and malaysia 370. unlike mr 370 which flew undetected for hours, air traffic control immediately noticed when this flight went missing. mh 370 investigators have been combing a vast area of the indian ocean in the deep sbest most deserted waters in the

world. 8501 is most likely in the java sea, shallow and heavily trafficked. he was experienced with 27,000 hours in the cockpit. >> our focus now from air asia is to help and support the next of kin of passengers. and also our crew to go through these very very difficult times. times. >> reporter: the weather is only getting worse out here. the wind is picking up. it was cloudy today. it will rain for the next few days. not ideal conditions for searching. it could, in fact hamper or potentially suspend the search the next few days. we'll see what happens as the weather shows us what it's going to give us. savannah? >> katy tur, thank you so much. nbc news analyst and ntbs investigator good morning to you.

>> good morning. >> how difficult a search do you expect this to be? >> it all depends f we're expecting to see lots of floating debris unlike with mh 370, it could be difficult because we're going to have to try to pinpoint exactly where that airplane and the bulk of the wreckage went into the water. and if there is any floating debris of course that has moved over the next 20 to 30 hours. we'll have to backtrack or pinpoint and try to identify where the main impact may be. >> still early but indications are that four minutes after -- or before the plane vanished the pilot had requested to climb higher to presumably get around the weather. what do you make of that? >> there are times you can go above the weather. knowing the weather types in that area aul of these pilots are very familiar that these thunderstorms blossom up to 30,000, 40,000, 50,000 feet.

he thought maybe he would climb to get a smoother ride. they may have been in turbulence as they got closer to that line of thunderstorms. he thought he may be able to deviate and climb to smooth the ride out. >> what do you make of air traffic control saying no you can't fly higher? >> traffic separation is their main duty f they had crossing traffic at higher altitude they have to have a certain separation. they probably said you can't go right now. you've got an airplane coming over the top of you. take your deviations. we'll climb you later. >> you're talking about monsoon weather, lightning strikes reported in the area. are you surprised the plane was permitted to fly this flight plan at all given those conditions? >> that's the question for investigators. typically before the pilots leave the ground they're doing a weather analysis. giving the deteriorating weather conditions those thunderstorms had been building up for quite some time and they blossomed even larger as the airplane

approached. that's going to be a question there as to what kind of information the crew had to make a decision to conduct the flight and why the airline released the airplane for that flight. >> you bhaer lightning strikes, these planes are designed to withstand this weather and some lightning. >> absolutely. airplanes can take lightning strikes. if you have multiple lightning strikes or an issue with what we call bonding where you have to make sure all the electronics are bonded you could fail some or all of the electronic equipment. and this is an electric airplane that's got backup computer ss. integrity of the system. >> so many questions this morning. >> absolutely. >> thank you for being here. appreciate it. let's go over to willie. >> ongoing effort to rescue passengers from a ferry that caught fire off the italian coast. during freezing temperatures rough seas and heavy smoke as they await to be plucked to safety. nbc's keir simmons has the latest on this story for us.

keir good morning. >> willie good morning. rescuers are, as we speak, air lifting people from the ferry. some are suffering from hypothermia. they had to stay on the ferry overnight. their shoes melted on the lower decks if they tried to get down and escape. a terrifying rescue operation. a ferry on fire. hundreds of passengers on the top deck. they are air lifted one by one while two jets of water are visible, pouring from another ship to control the flames beneath those still stranded. 158 people were reportedly still on board. some were winched to safety in groups. a mother and two children and apparently very young child in her arms wrapped in blue. she smiled. we're okay. the ferry was headed from greece to italy. most of the 478 on board were greek. it's thought the fire broke out on the car deck before spreading. here a burst of flames.

one person has died jumping from the ship. now cold is causing hypothermia. 329 are safe. some left from a container ship this morning that had reached the ferry to help before rough seas, high winds and the intense fire made rescue by sea impossible. there was no alarm, nothing, this man says. everything was blocked. it was freezing cold. no help. the ferry had passed a technical inspection according to its owners. one passenger called his wife from on board and told her they had been left to burn. and that one dead may increase willie. one passenger has told local media he saw many bodies. we're also hearing from italian media that there are now 70 people left on board. i earlier checked in with al on the weather. he says there are still rough seas rain even sleet. temperatures in the 30s.

recreational use. some are calling it a successful year others aren't so sure yet. gabe gutierrez is covering the story in denver. gabe good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. colorado's governor called this the greatest social experiments of the century. in its first year that experiment has brought in a whole lot of money and a whole lot of controversy. on january 1st the lines were long and the hopes were high. a year later at denver's 3d cannibis business is booming. >> i had five employees. now i have 40. >> reporter: recreational and medical marijuana sales in colorado have topped half a billion dollars, raking in more thads 60 million in tax revenue, licensing and fees. still colorado's governor john hickenlooper says that's a drop in the bucket for the state's budget. so far, has it been worth it? >> we're making significant progress. >> reporter: why do you sound skeptical?

>> i'm cautious. i think we still have a lot of work to do. >> reporter: a 65% december in black market marijuana seizure since 2012. the denver post reports marijuana dui arrests have more than doubled and police have issued more than 600 citations for public consumption of pot, more than triple last year. accounts of more homeless people flocking to colorado and several children rushed to emergency rooms after eating pot edibles. >> we're now in a whole new world of insanely potent marijuana we're selling in colorado. it's a very real concern, a very real danger for our kids. >> reporter: the war over weed is playing out in denver neighborhoods like south broadway where other businesses say they're being overrun by pot shops. >> to say colorado is just about marijuana now is outrageous. we're so much more than marijuana, so much more than pot. >> reporter: this has been known

number one, five cents cheaper than the tide. it gets off all kinds of stains. this is actual stain from our test. you can see grass. it did a good job on grass. ring around the collar. it almost got it completely out. does a great job. keep them away from kids because kids think they're candy. that's not good. >> cascade pacs. >> a splurge at 29 cents a load. they even get off the stuck-on crud on pots and pans. if you like to put those pots and pans in the dishwasher these are for you. >> this is one you didn't love. >> in this category of cleaning these were the worst paper towels. they literally fall apart in your hand. dollar store store brand. they're half the price but not worth it. cheap for a reason. >> pay more for paper towel. >> let's move on to home improvement. >> this cute little guy,

street. right now we have the two right lanes blocked. then a little bit farther up we have the center lane blocked. one lane of traffic is getting by at that scene. that's westbound from i-95 out to 76. speaking of 76 drive times you can see 12 to 13 minutes in both directions between the blue route and the vine. today in montgomery county seven people charged in a penndot corruption scandal are scheduled for preliminary hearings. ten people are accused in a billing scheme that cost taxpayers more than $1 million. two former penndot managers and eight contractors are charged. they say the managers took kickbacks to look the other way falsifying time sheets and mileage reports. remember you can always get realtime information at nbc10.com. i'm chris cato. now back to the "today" show.

certain tax deductions could boost your bottom line come april. senior finance correspondent sharon epperson good morning. you have to get in on these by the end of the year if you want them to count for your tax return come april? >> that's right. what you need to do right now. if you want to get a bigger refund refund, reduce your tax bill, take the action in the next couple of days. >> make a big purchase. why is that good for your taxes? >> that's because in the eleventh hour congress did extend certain tax breaks and one of them was to decide whether you want to deduct your state income tax or general sales tax. so if you're in a state that has no income tax and you still want to get a tax deduction, deduct the sales tax on certain items. big purchase. if you make it you can then deduct the sales tax. that's a really good break for people who live in no income tax states like florida and texas. >> definitely a good one. our next one, which is prepay

2015 college tuition. this is interesting. >> if you can afford to do it you may want to pay the first quarter of 2015 now. get the opportunity to get a tax break, tuition and fees also extended by congress last year or get a tax credit. that's of course dollar for dollar reduction in your taxes, american opportunity tax credit or lifetime learning tax credit. you have to have paid that 2015 quarter now, at least part of that payment now, to get that deduction. >> and that way you take the deduction now you know you've got it and not worry what congress does in the future. >> right. >> flexible spending account. a lot of people have these. essentially they set aside money from their salary for medical expenses. >> right. you do this because you want to reduce your taxable income. it's a great way to put money aside for dependent care shall health care flexible spending accounts. you have to use the money by december 31st or often you will lose it. grace period by march 2015 but

not all of them. some will stipulate you can take $500 and carry it over to next year. but not all of them. contact your benefits department find out how much money you have left in that fsa. >> it's not always a trip to the doctor but things you could get at the drugstore, stock up and use that money. >> you have to look at the irs.gov to see what you can purchase. there have been changes with the affordable care act as to what qualify. >> new car, new truck. big ticket item might be worth buying right now. >> if you're self employed and use the car or truck for business purposes. there's something called section 179 to look at with the irs. that is something that would allow you to take at least part of the purchase price for your car and write it off. it depends how much you use the car for business use. you want to use it at least 50% of the time. this is something that edmonds.com points out and says it's a good tip for people who are self employed to do. by the end of the year buy that

car. >> certainly not least, give to charity. if you want to deduct to those charitable organizations, have you to make it by the end of the year. >> how many of us actually do it? you need to do it before december 31st. have it postmarked electronic transfer credit card payment to the charity, make sure it's by december 31st so that you can get that tax deduction. if you're donating clothing or household goods, able to go to salvation army or somewhere to donate items, get written confirmation you've made this donation for anything over $250. best to have confirmation for everything every donation you make. go to the irs website, irs.gov to make sure the charity you're choosing will be able to offer you that deduction. >> a good reminder. thank you so much. >> sure. we'll be back in a moment. this is "today" on nbc.

people charged in a penndot corruption scandal are scheduled to appear in a courtroom. seven of the ten defendants will attend their preliminary hearing. they are accused in a scheme that cost taxpayers $1.2 million. two penndot managers and eight contractors are charged. they said they took kickbacks to look the other way falsifying timesheets and mileage reports. a man who shot an intruder trying to break into his apartment will not face charges. the burglar broke into one apartment and stole a dog, then he tried to get into the second apartment, that's when the resident shot him. the suspect is in critical condition. later today setup will begin for the annual new year's eve fireworks show along the delaware river. they'll start loading the shells on to barges. these shows use more than 4,000 devices. you can catch the shows at 6:00 and midnight on new year's eve.

375 for 45 minutes. you get these incredible puffy little hugs in a blanket. >> i love pigs in a blanket. what kind of dip is this? >> that's just mustard with some honey in it. honey mustard. >> coarse grain mustard, that's nice. puff pastry cheese and fruit thing. >> great for everything. what we're doing, we rolled it out nice and thin. cut it in 1 1/2, 2-inch squares parchment paper and another baking sheet. keep it is nice and flat. after you bake it took about 35 minutes, you get these incredibly crisp crackers. you can top them with preserves, store bought like this cheese right on top of there. >> any type of cheese for this? >> any type of cheese that's pretty strong. this is a great bleu cheese. you can serve it like this or like that. >> so good. so is the hugs in a blanket.

>> now my favorite. reinvented jalapeno popper. cut them in half. everybody's favorite cream cheese. take a little bit like this. put it right in there. who would like to fill some more? >> i'll do that. >> everything is better wrapped in bacon. >> it makes such a little bite-sized salty -- >> doesn't matter what's in the middle with bacon around it. >> exactly. we have some made already. you put it right into a hot skillet. you can hear the sizzle. >> how do you make sure you get all sides crispy? >> use some tongue ss, turn it. put it in a preheated oven. >> my turn to try. >> you should both try that. >> homemade potato chips right there? >> potatoes crisps. we're using the skins only. you throw them in some hot oil that you have here.

west. clouds slowly moving out but staying chilly with temperatures in the middle to upper 40s. today an autopsy is scheduled for a 10-year-old boy killed by a police car in gloucester county. the boy was walking with two friends around 7:00 last night. he triedy ediedy edied to cross the street and was hit by a police car responding to a call. witnesses say the car did not have lights or sirens on. the prosecutor's office is investigating. we have new video just in from north philadelphia where crews were called out to a row house fire on north 28th street about two hours ago. the fire was quickly brought under control in about 15 minutes and no one was hurt. meantime investigators say a house fire in berks county that killed two people does not appear to be suspicious. it broke out on spruce street and reeding last night. neighbors say an elderly couple lived there. a few hours ago crews boarded up the home. we'll have another local update in 25 minutes. you can get the latest news and

the suspect is in critical condition. this afternoon setup will begin for the annual new year's eve fireworks show along the delaware river. workers will start loading the shells that will be used onto barges at the navy yard. these fireworks shows use more than 4,000 devices and 4 tons of explosives. you can catch the fireworks shows at 6:00 p.m. and midnight on new year's eve. philadelphia and camden have celebrated the new year with fireworks along the waterfront for the last 24 years. we'll have a full hour of news coming up in 30 minutes. see you then.
