new this morning, the video threat that led to a deadly police shooting in delaware county. we've learned the investigation actually started days ago at a local gym. plus another deadly police shooting, this one in cumberland county, where an officer opened fire on a man after a traffic stop. and it is december 31st new year's eve and mummers and nonmummers alike across the area are preparing for a night of fun. we'll tell you and show you some ways you can celebrate in your community and beyond. and no matter how you choose to ring in the new year you're going to need a big coat. it is a cold one out there this morning, as we take a live look at i-95 in south philadelphia.

we will barely get above the freezing mark and it will feel more like the teens with the wind out there. good morning and welcome to "nbc 10 news today" on this final day of 2014. i'm chris cato. let's begin with meteorologist brittney shipp and her first alert forecast. we're off to a chilly start. >> we are off to a freezing start, and it's going to stay that way as we head through the rest of the morning. we will be slow to warm above freezing heading into the rest of today. a live look outside at boathouse row, where we are going to see our temperatures today starting off in the 20s. 26 degrees currently in wilmington 25 in philadelphia, 23 in allentown, 17 in pottstown pottstown, 25 in philadelphia, 18 degrees, a cold start to the morning in millville. here's your feels-like temperature. feels like 16 degrees in philadelphia. feeling like 25 in northeast philly, 17 in allentown. and as we head into the rest of today, our temperatures will stay in the 30s, about ten degrees below average, ranging between 31 and 34 degrees. sunny and breezy cold conditions in store for us.

our wind speeds out of the west 10 to 20 miles per hour. that will contribute to our windchill. for a closer look at the roads, we'll check in with first alert traffic reporter jillian mele. >> good morning to you, brittney, you at home as well. we're following overnight construction on the 42 freeway, northbound side out near creek road and 295. in the overnight hours, 42 is blocked because of that. traffic is getting by now. it was scheduled to wrap around 5:00 a.m. you can expect to see construction out there, but at least traffic is getting by. in gilbertsville, we're dealing with a downed pole from an earlier accident philadelphia avenue at park lane. and for drivers in the lehigh valley this morning, an incident to deal with route 22 at airport road, all is quiet. chris? 4:02 now. we have new information now on a deadly police shooting in delaware county. we've learned that the suspect caught the attention of law enforcement by making statements at a gym. nbc 10's monique braxton joins us live from havertown now. tell us about the chain of events that led police to have

this run-in with the suspect last night. >> reporter: chris, we've been digging into this story all night long and new information this morning for you as we have learned the circumstances that led to the death of joe pacini began at this gym on sunday. the haverford police chief says the 32-year-old pacini openly threatened law enforcement in general, not aiming at anyone specific. the staff of the gym contacted haverford police about pacini's strange behavior. monday, pacini was asked to speak to police at headquarters. instead, pacini from clifton heights, posted three videos on youtube, threatening police and an arrest warrant was obtained yesterday, charging pacini with making terroristic threats. we're warning you, what you're about to see may be disturbing. >> you want to try to bring me down, i will kill you and your

whole [ muted ] family, all right? so go ahead and [ muted ] me. >> he was ranting on youtube, threatening to kill police threatening to kill fbi agents. they got the warrant for him. they were going to serve the warrant for him. he left the house in clifton. they followed him over to here. they go to stop him. >> reporter: and in the next half hour we're going to tell you what happened when police came face-to-face with pacini. live for now in havertown, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. we're also following another police-involved killing this morning, this one in cumberland county. bridgeton police shot and killed a man after a traffic stop there. a live look at the scene here. investigators are still on scene. they've been processing it for more than six hours now. you can see them now taking down what apparently is the police tape around the area. it happened around 9:30 last night on south avenue and henry street. now, police haven't told us much here. we do know that they stopped a black bmw with two people

inside. they don't know why yet. we know they shot one man who was taken to the hospital where he died. police say they found a handgun but they haven't said where they found it or what prompted the shooting. stay with nbc 10 as we continue to get answers to questions on this deadly police-involved shooting. and we have new information this morning in the recovery efforts of the airasia jet that crashed and went missing on sunday. nbc 10's tracy davidson joins us live from our digital operations center. tracy, now it looks like that the weather is hampering these recovery efforts somewhat right? >> right, chris. heavy rain and rough seas are making it difficult for search crews to find more victims. so far, seven bodies and that's the new number seven bodies have been found. two of the bodies from the crash site arrived by helicopter at a base in indonesia. authorities are working to identify those victims. they're collecting dna samples and pictures from relatives to help speed up the process. meantime dozens of ships and aircraft from multiple countries are involved in search-and-recovery efforts, including a u.s. navy destroyer.

debris from the plane was first discovered yesterday off the coast of borneo. search crews have yet to find the plane's black boxes, but they think they have found a large piece of wreckage under the water. they can see a huge shadow. also investigators say one of the bodies pulled from the water appears to be a flight attendant wearing airasia's trademark red uniform. they say that fully-clothed body suggests that the plane may have been intact when it hit the water. we're monitoring the feed. we'll keep you updated on any new developments. live in the digital operations center tracy davidson nbc 10 news. six minutes after 4:00 now. happening later today, three suspects in the murder of a toddler in chester county will be arraigned. jillian tait and gary fellenbaum are accused of killing tait 3-year-old son, scott mcmillan. amber is charged with endangering the welfare of a child for allegedly watch the abuse for two weeks without reporting it. in november the boy's body was

found at the home in parksburg where the suspects lived. this morning grief counselors will be there for students and teachers at the rioter school in gloucester county. matthew mccloskey was crossing route 47 with his friends sunday night when he was hit and killed by a police car. investigators say the franklin township officer was responding to a call at the time. that officer is on leave now pending the outcome of the investigation. in less than an hour the community of camden will resume its vigil for peace. it started early yesterday morning at the cathedral of the immaculate conception and continues this morning at 5:00 and runs until 5:00 p.m. an hour of prayer is devoted to each of camden's 31 murder victims this year along with prayers for a peaceful new year. ♪ and we are counting down to 2015. the new year now less than 20 hours away.

weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning. freezing temperatures in store for us as we head into the rest of your morning. by the afternoon, we'll warm a little bit above freezing but we're still well below our average. so if we take a closer look at our feels-like temperature, it feels like it's 10 degrees in the poconos, feels like 17 in allentown and pottstown, 16 in philadelphia feeling like 19 degrees in wilmington. our actual temperature, 19 in the poconos, 23 in allentown, 25 in philadelphia only 26 in wilmington. take a look at some of our shore communities. atlantic city, closer to the airport, 18 degrees. the actual temperature in millville 18. as we head into the rest of your late morning hours, expect cold and freezing temperatures to continue. even by 10:00 a.m. we're still right at 30 degrees for philadelphia, still below freezing at allentown, 22 in the poconos, 33 in atlantic city. even as we head into the rest of the afternoon, we're only going to warm to 34 degrees for philadelphia, 30 degrees in

allentown, 31 in reading and 20s in the poconos. so we will definitely see a cold day on tap for us. if you plan on actually being outside this new year's eve at midnight expect our temperatures to be at 26 degrees with a windchill of 20 degrees. i'm tracking a weekend storm, a slightly warmer condition. that's coming up in my first alert seven-day forecast. >> all right, brittney. ten minutes after 4:00 now. time to get a check of the early new year's eve traffic out there. nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter jillian mele is watching the roads. >> good morning, chris. we're not dealing with too many problems on the majors right now. for the most part highways are looking good. 95 is clear, 76 is free of any incidents, so is 422 and the roulette 30 bypass. our problem right now is out of gilbertsville. we have an accident that happened earlier this morning and brought down poles. so, we have a pole down in that area and officials are blocking philadelphia avenue which is route 73. and that's going to be blocked at park lane so you can take hoff meansville road to get around it.

journey worthwhile. the wild atlanti c way. 1500 miles of extraordinary nows. jump into ireland. visit ireland.com to find out more. 4:14. police in canada say the man who killed eight people before taking his own life had planned the killing spree. the edmonton police chief calls the murders tragic incidents of domestic violence. six adults and two kids were killed in two separate homes. the suspect, who was later found dead is well known to police. they say he had a criminal history dating back three decades. police have identified the woman who was shot and killed by her 2-year-old inside a walmart in northern idaho. the child was in a shopping cart yesterday morning when he reached into his mom's purse and grabbed her gun. the gun went off, killing the woman. police say she did have a concealed weapons permit.

a pregnant woman is recovering this morning after being attacked and robbed just feet from her philadelphia home. take a look at this surveillance video here. you can see a man run up behind the woman, who is seven months pregnant, knock her to the ground. after punching her in the head. this happened last monday night on manton street in the city's pennsport neighborhood. family members say the suspect broke several bones on the right side of the woman's face. >> i mean what kind of a coward picks on a woman like that seven months? you can't miss she's pregnant. >> the suspect ran off with her purse and a bag of food. surveillance video captured the suspect's car. they say he was driving this gray suv. call police if you have any information. this montgomery county woman accused of having sex with a 17-year-old high school student waived her right to a preliminary hearing yesterday. 42-year-old iris gibney a married mother of three, faces a number of charges, including corruption of minors and giving

obscene materials to a minor. gibney's lawyer says his client is remorseful. >> she is heartbroken at the decision that she made under the circumstances. we're going to make every effort now at this point to try and move forward with her life. >> upper pottsgrove police say an officer caught gibney and the student having sex in a park. gibney will make her next court appearance in february. 4:16 now. two women are facing charges after police in cherry hill say the women used a baby to hide stolen cosmetics. police say amanda platt and another woman stole $500 worth of products from sephora on saturday. according to investigators, the women hid the cosmetics underneath a 4-month-old who was inside a car seat mounted to a stroller. the women are charged with shoplifting and using a juvenile to commit a criminal offense. well the california surfer who survived a shark attack is talking about his encounter for

the first time. kevin swanson is recovering this morning after a great white attacked him over the weekend. the veteran surfer was in the water when he suddenly felt himself being pulled below the surface. >> you know i completely disappeared. it was like i was never there. it happened sudden it happened violently, and it was quick. >> swanson was somehow able to break free and make it to the beach. he was flown to the hospital and underwent two hours of surgery. he actually used the rope on his surfboard to make a tourniquet. his family now says he's following a new surfing rule -- call as soon as you're out of the water. engineers will be examining the morton salt storage facility in chicago after a wall collapsed, burying cars with salt. a side wall broke yesterday afternoon, spilling salt on to the cars at a car dealership next door. that's not good. no one was injured. a preliminary inspection found that the wall may have collapsed because the salt was piled too high.

former president george h.w. bush is back home this morning after spending a week in the hospital. the 90-year-old was released from houston's methodist hospital yesterday. he was admitted last week after experiencing shortness of breath. a spokesperson says bush is grateful to the doctors and nurses for their superb care. well bats may be the cause of the ebola outbreak that has claimed the lives of nearly 8,000 people in west africa. a team of researchers believes the first case was a 2-year-old boy who played in a hollowed-out tree where infected bats lived. they are now testing different species of bats. so far, none of those bats has tested positive for ebola. well a south korean activist has hatched a plan to bring the controversial sony film, "the interview," to the people of north korea. the activist says he'll start dropping 100,000 dvds from a balloon in north korea next month. he says he's partnered with a

u.s.-based non-profit human rights foundation which is financing making copies of the movie with korean subtitles. the comedy depicts an assassination plot on north korean dictator kim jong-un. the movie is, of course at the center of a cyber war between north korea and the u.s. following the hacking of sony pictures. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning. as we head into the rest of today, we are going to stay cold. temperatures well below average. a freezing new year's eve on tap for us. temperatures stay below average for at least the next three days and then we have one mild day and then another arctic blast. so, i'll go over all the details on that in your seven-day forecast. we're also tracking the possibility of a weekend storm, which will bring us rain and the chance of a wintry mix. light wind speeds right now. they will continue to pick up through the morning hours. 25 degrees with clear skies at the philadelphia international airport. wind speeds out of the west-southwest at 8 miles per hour. we couple those two together the feels-like temperature in

the teens. our actual temperatures for the poconos at 19 23 degrees in allentown, 17 in pottstown, 26 in wilmington 18 in millville, 18 degrees right now in atlantic city. we're at 29 in the harbor. and a closer look at the rest of the region. quakertown only 16 degrees, 17 in pottstown, 26 in wilmington 18 in mt. holly, 21 in trenton. right here along the shore it's a bit warmer in avalon at 29 degrees but still well below average. and we're actually 16 degrees cooler in atlantic city from this time yesterday, down 17 degrees in millville. but clear skies for us. and as we head into the rest of today, we'll see plenty of sunshine, quiet conditions for the entire eastern half of the nation, for the most part. our average for this time of year, 41 degrees. as we head into today, take a look at those temperatures. 33. 39 on your thursday. and our feels-like temperature heading into the rest of the afternoon pretty much staying in the 20s, although our actual temperature will warm into the 30s. but we have a very cold day on tap for us. and your seven-day forecast

4:25. united airlines and orbitz are suing the founder of a website that helps people buy cheaper airline tickets. it uses hidden city fares. that's where you buy a ticket with a layover in your destination and skip the last leg of a flight. this is cheaper than a direct flight. the founder says there's nothing illegal about that but united airlines and orbitz says it promotes strictly prohibitive travel and they want $75,000 in lost revenue. well pennsylvania drivers will have to dig a little deeper

into their wallets to pay for gas starting tomorrow. that's because gas taxes will be going up nearly 10 cents a gallon. diesel taxes will rise 13 cents a gallon. this is the latest in a series of tax hikes to boost construction funding in pennsylvania. the next increase will come in 2017. well new jersey is considering a plan to turn highway rest stops into shopping destinations. a bill in trenton would require operators of the new jersey turnpike, the garden state parkway and the atlantic city expressway to look at new retail options. those possibilities include billboards, corporate sponsorships and even stores. lawmakers say the idea is to raise money for road repairs without charging drivers. like everything the life of a dollar bill must come to an end some time. so, what happens once it's taken out of service? well in philadelphia, the federal reserve bank is turning the old green into electricity. each month, tons of old money is being burned to light up homes and businesses in the area.

the fifth annual philadelphia new year's eve midnight run starts at citizens bank park. you can get there at 9:00 for prerun drinks. i don't know if that includes champagne. and if you want to get the kids in bed early, good luck with that. you can stop by nest on locust street to a countdown to noon. children under 9 are invited to a mocktail party, complete with a photo booth, red carpet and crafts. that starts at 10:30 this morning. we'll be right back after this. ♪
