>> announcer: "nbc10 news" starts now. a violent start to the new year in delaware county. where a person was shot and apparently murdered. we have details ahead in a live report. and the annual new year's eve mummers parade kicks off this morning. it brings a new route, though. we'll tell you where on that route you can catch the best news if you're headed out. and if you are headed out this morning, anywhere layers. bundle up. a cold start of 2015. as we take a live look at philadelphia the first day of the year. good morning, happy new year. i'm chris cato. let's begin with brittney shipp.

in the "first alert" forecast. a lot of people were out at the fireworks last night and they were heeding what you told them. >> absolutely cold weather expected for us. there's a live look at the poconos right now. and we're going to see cold conditions continue as we head through the rest of today. the current temperatures at 30 degrees at the6r(c humidity is 45%. wind speeds at 14 miles an hour that makes it feel like it's closer to 20 degrees. if you plan on heading out in the next few hours we're not going to warm up much more than that. our temperatures are going to stay between 37 and 40 degrees today. and that wind speed and direction of the southwest, 10 to 20 miles per hour. let's take a closer look at our current temperatures. a chilly 16 degrees in the

poconos. 28 in allentown. 28 in philadelphia. temperatures in atlantic city 28 degrees. and then currently we're at 29 in wilmington. as we continue to head through the rest of today, will you notice that our temperatures will stay below average. we'll see a high today in philadelphia at 39 degrees. >> all right, brittney. 4:02 now. we have breaking news in chester, a down plagued by violence in 2014 ism9 deadly shooting. katy zachry is live there. >> reporter: chris, i can tell you family members of the victim are inside the chester police department. they tell us they want more information from detectives about what happened earlier this morning. what we know there was a shooting reported around 1:00 a.m. at price and kol lane streets in chester. chester police have not released

that person's name but relatives who crowded at the scene tell us he's 22 years old. he has two daughters, he has a fiancee and he works as a mechanic in yaden. his mother told us he was celebrating the new year before he was killed. that mother went on to talk and share more about her son. we're working on getting that four at 4:30. i've also reached out to the police commissioner joseph bale at the police department. he's also on scene. a deadly shooting. as soon as i get more information from investigators, i'll bring it to you. for now, katy zachry "nbc10 news." police across the country and around the world have welcomed 2015. about 1 million people crowded into times square to usher in the new year. the waterford crystal ball dropped right on time at

midnight. and a ton of confetti dropped on a ton of people below. and the big new year's celebration in this area was along penn's landing. revelers braved subfreezing temperature to watch the show. one of two free shows last night as they welcomed in twirch in philadelphia. and we're still welcoming in 2015. we're just a few hours away for the celebration you need in philadelphia. of course, we're talking about mummers parade. a shorter afraid route change. it leaves city hall and down broad street. nbc10's jesse gary is live at a cold center city on what to expect for this year's mummer's. jesse, i'm sure the revelers are headed home now.

>> reporter: well some of the mummers have been prepositioned here. we're starting on the parkway. you can see you've got trucks lining both sides of the parkway. and also some trucks parked at the median as well. more items stored at the pennsylvania convention center. this is the 115th year string bands, fancy brigades will strut their stuff. this time ending on washington avenue. a year's worth of preparation to perform for a day. >> we've been here all day just fine-tuning things. adding changes, taking some stuff away. >> reporter: and the parade starts at 10:00 this morning and ends with a fancy brigade. the mayor will be here coming up and in a few minutes we'll give you scenes from this year's parade. live jesse gary "nbc10 news." >> you can follow the mummers as

they move down broad street and you can access that by downloading the nbc10 app. free from the app store. those of us here we're just about four hours into 2015. people overseas are already writing the wrong dates on their checks. in london people crowded to watch fireworks there. in paris, people taking in a live show at the art de triomphe, and in russia the president's palace and the historic kremlin complex. back here at home, new from overnight, the red cross is helping this house fire from delaware county. a firefighter actually showed video from where a fire started at 11:00 in glennoldenglenolden. the good news is four people inside did make it out safely

but their house is destroyed. this morning, a man is in custody after barricading himself in a home when officers tried to search an arrest warrants. st. alvines and 25th street. the suspect got away and ran into another house. a s.w.a.t. team surrounded that home. the man surrendered a short time later. no one was hurt. well woman and her two children are thankful for the camden police officers who rescued them from a fire. two officers ran into a burning home at 8th and atlantic avenue. they got the mom and kids out the window and on to the roof of the house. and then lowered the family to rescuers below. and a group put their lives on the line to rescue a family on butler street. a neighbor tells us he heard the woman screaming he and others

broke out windows and went in to get her. >> we screamed is anybody in here? anybody in here? we heard her screaming. we didn't know if it was somebody upstairs or downstairs once we seen the silhouette of her like in the back we just ran in and got them out. >> firefighters arrived a few minutes later. the woman was being taken to the hospital to be checked out, but she is expected to be okay. 8 minutes after 4:00 now, tie developing story. wind and heavy rain have returned to the search area where crews are trying to recover bodies and debris from the airasia 8501. earlier, teams took advantage of the calm and break in the weather to resume their efforts. so far, crews have discovered seven bodies near the crash site in the java sea. earlier this morning, soldiers loaded white coffins containing the remaining four victims on to a plane to carry them for identification. the airasia jet disappeared on sunday with 162 people on board.

and 40 degrees. this average for this time of year is 41 degrees. and if you plan on heading out to the mummers parade. here's what we expect to see. it does start at 10:00 a.m., if you head out early to get a good seat by 8:00 a.m., 27. 29 by 10:00 a.m. and 33 degrees at noon. i'll have your seven-day forecast coming up. ten minutes after 4:00 and problems persist at the va hospital in philadelphia. new investigation causing them to expand the investigation of benefits for veterans could be at risk. plus a dust devil whipped up problems ahead of today's rose bowl. we'll see how a bouncy house went flying.

4:12 this morning, we have video from a deadly police shooting in camden county. the witness who reported this shows police reporting that. authorities say two officers shot jermaine reed after pulling over the car he was riding in tuesday night. the driver is in custody. investigators have not said yet what prompted the officers to shoot. but they have told us that a handgun was recovered. the prosecutor's office is investigating. investigations involving the philadelphia veterans affairs office are digging deeper now to allegations made by employees. according to "the philadelphia inquirer" results of the investigation are not expected to be release until late february. after a stream of whistle-blowers came forward the investigation expanded. some employees claiming mail

from veterans inquiring about delays in their benefits were shredded. and records were changed to hide the backlogs. the authority searched over 1 million veterans. officials there have denied any wrong doing. nbc10 investigators have new information about an airport emergency at philadelphia international that happened early last year. it turns out the pilot should not have been flying the plane at the time. a new government report details the aborted takeoff of us airways flight 1702 last night. it reveals that the captain had taken a psychotic and a narcotic he wasn't supposed to fly for 60 hours but he got in the cockpit 45 hours later. >> these drugs have the ability to impair one's attention. technically, he was illegal to fly because of the medication. >> and the report says that the pilot ignored the plane's

warning signals before takeoff. two passengers had minor injuries when the plane slammed back on the runway after briefly lifting off. us airways declined comment on this report saying they're waiting for the federal government for direction. one of the nypd police officers killed in the ambush the service for wenjian liu is scheduled for sunday. liu and his partner ramos were shot and killed in a patrol car. mayor de blasio announced yesterday that streets near their homes will be named in their honor. federal investigators are taking a second look at a place where police were shot at. a 19-year-old from las vegas was taken into custody. prosecutors say two officers drove their car into the line of

fire when gang members were shooting at rivals in another car. an 18-year-old already faces charges in this case. police took to the streets of san francisco to protest police killings of african-americans instead of celebrating new year's eve. similar protests were held across the country, including a peaceful die-in contest in boston. well 2014 was a big year for philadelphia hotels. the hotel business in the city had its best numbers in more than 25 years. after last night, occupancy more than 11,000 hotel rooms hit 76%. that's the highest since 1949. the city has become a major destination for vacations and conventions. new year's partiers got a little more than they bargained for outside the rose bowl. the tents flying as people

gathered for the rose bowl game in pasadena. a few people ended up with bumps and bruises. from asia to new york to philadelphia, people celebrated with new year's celebrations. >> reporter: in the first few minutes of 2015 the skies above new zealand filled with color and cheers. a similar scene in australia where more than 1 million people gathered. across asia, music parties, and, yes, more fireworks. hundreds gathered outside of tokyo's hotel prince for a backdrop. and beijing's celebration celebrate around the national stadium known as the bird nest. an effort to showcase the hosting of the 2022 olympics. paris, the so-called city of lights hosted a spectacular

show. and revelers braved the cold. and a fireworks display at the word's tallest building in dubai. perhaps, the most famous belongs in new york city the drop of the iconic crystal ball. 1 million people packed into times square to cheer it on. a new year with new wishes across the globe. in times square, sarah dallof nbc news. but here's the downside to the new year's celebration, it means it's time to get started on resolutions. the obesity rate was up in 2014 and the amount of physical activity was down. new jersey had the 12th highest obesity rate in the country. pennsylvania and delaware fared better than that. some say the government should

do its part to help those struggling with weight issues. >> announcer: now your nbc10 "first alert" weather"u1ñ with meteorologist brittney shipp. good morning, heading into the rest of today it is going to be a cold one. temperatures staying mainly in the 30s for you. a little below average for this time of year. as we close in on the weekend, we are tracking the possibility of a brief wintry mix and wet and warm conditions expected as well. but a live look right now to the city's skyline, clear skies, plenty of sunshine 30 degrees, wind speeds in the southwest at 14 miles per hour. breezy wind speeds and cold air that's going to give us that feels like temperature in the 20s. across the region 23 degrees in reading. atlantic city at 28. mostly clear skies. and freezing in philadelphia. if you plan on heading out to the mummers parade or doing shopping bundle up. 26 degrees in the poconos.

23 in reading. 29 in mt. washington. mt. holly, 22 and wrightstown, and 27 in millville. the feels like temperatures in the single digits in the poconos. 12 degrees in allentown, 21 in atlantic city and feeling like 26 in wildwood. radar shows quiet conditions again, high pressure still in control. so it's really quiet throughout the eastern half of the nation. and as we head into the weekend, that is actually going to change. we're in the clear as we head through the rest of thursday. the same thing on friday. it won't be until we head into saturday evening that we start to see a chance of rain by 9:00 p.m. closer to 10:00. we could see a little bit of a wintry mix. sleet possible. mainly confined to the lehigh valley and also parts of the poconos. i-95 corridor points south. and as we head into the

overnight hours on saturday pushing into the early morning hours and afternoon on sunday we're still going to see rainfall. that's because warmer air is going to work its way up to the south. and that is going to give us the temperatures well above average. we are going to stay closer to the average thursday and friday. by sunday you'll notice a big time warmup. unfortunately, we'll have to get rid of some of rain to really enjoy the second half of the weekend. 36 degrees in toms river by 10:00 a.m. 36 in atlantic city. mid-30s still for philadelphia. 31 in allentown. 24 in the poconos, even as we head into the rest of the afternoon, our temperatures are still in the 30s for philadelphia and allentown. so you definitely want to bundle up because it's going to be a cold one today. heading into your friday dry and cold 43 degrees. by saturday that's when we track that wintry mix switching over to rainfall and rain. on sunday temperatures stay much warmer. about 60 degrees.

witnesses say it may have been triggered by someone throwing fake money out of a window on the street. now to north korea in a new year's speech the country's leader kim jong-un reached out to south korea. kim said he's open to a high-level summit with south korea. and the debate rages over whether north korea was behind that hack attack on sony pictures or now another theory it may have been an inside job. the cybersecurity firm norse said it has been investigating the attack. they're focused on a group of at least six individuals. including at least one ex-sony employee. they code named her lena saying she spent ten years at sony and was laid off last spring. >> somebody had to know what would embarrass hollywood or sony. and nation states whether north
