helicopter today. three large parts of the plane were recovered. officials say they will examine it as fast as they can. the focus is still on the sea bed and that large shadow which they think could be the fuselage. a team with specialized acoustic equipment is now on the way to listen to pings from black boxes, much like the search for mh 370. meanwhile, a stream of friends and family comfort his grieving wife. she told us she is holding up as best she can. >> my condolences to you. >> reporter: they trained as military pilots together n 2013 they celebrated 30 years of friendship. what do you think went wrong? a pilot for 30 years. you're a pilot. what do you think happened? >> i don't know. >> reporter: today, he and a few other pilot friends of the captain were at a loss as to what went wrong.

wife of more than 50 years, matilda and children chris, madeline margaret maria and andrew. >> a documentary about 15 years ago for the history channel called so you want to be president. we asked mario cuomo, did you want to be president? it was a question he almost couldn't answer. >> he certainly flirted with it. >> we're thinking about his family. thank you so much. >> you bet. a deadly shooting inside a police chief's home. sheinelle has been following that for us. >> good morning. suburban police chief is on administrative leave after investigators say he he shot his wife in the bedroom of their georgia home. could it have been a horrible accident? gabe gutierrez reports. >> reporter: he is the top cop in peachtree city georgia. this morning state investigators are trying to find out what happened in his home near atlanta hours into the new year. >> a lot of things that we don't know yet about what took place that we need to know before we

can make any decisions. >> reporter: chief mccollum called 911 just after 4:00 am thursday saying he accidentally shot his wife in their bedroom with his department-issued handgun similar to this one. margaret mccollum was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. >> the initial reports we got from the 911 call were that the chief had shot his wife accidentally twice. as a result of our preliminary interview, we had found that he only shot her one time. >> reporter: police aren't revealing what led to the shooting or how the gun could have accidentally fired. william mccolllum has not been charged with a crime but is on administrative leave. he has been the chief less than a year. >> we're very concerned for, obviously, his wife. we're concerned for the chief. >> reporter: neighbors are in disbelief. >> a lot of people are praying for her. >> reporter: and they're hoping that what happened here was nothing more than a freak accident. gabe gutierrez nbc news

atlanta. activist groups say areas in northeastern syria are taking a pounding from u.s.-led coalition airplanes. aircraft carried out more than a dozen air strikes overnight in and around the defacto capital. heavy bombing on targets in both syria and iraq. largest population of immigrants in the country illegally will be able to apply for driver's licenses starting today. california department and motor vehicles says it expects more than 1 million people will apply for a license in the first three years of the program. california is one of ten states that now provides licenses to immigrants who are in the country illegally. the stage is set for this season's college football national championship game. oregon and ohio state will play. big win over florida state in the rose bowl. heisman trophy winner marcus mariota threw two touchdown pass and ran one in himself.

oklahoma. we've got ice storm warnings out. we could be looking at anywhere from an inch to half an inch of ice, which could be for some parts of this area catastrophic. the roads will be a mess. power lines coming down. we'll be watching this very closely. we have another area of severe weather developing along the southern gulf coast. for tomorrow we look at this area down through the gulf coast. we may be seeing some severe weather, dangerous lightning, wind gusts, possibility of tornadoes from new orleans on into mobile and into central mississippi. heavy rain anywhere from three to four inches of rain down through the gulf. during the day tomorrow into saturday evening it spreads into the northeast. look at this. even into the northeast, we could be looking at anywhere from two to three inches of rain. we'll get to you

outbreak concern. 15 children have died as the especially dem epidemic spreads to 36 states and it could get a lot worse before the season is over. let's go to dr. natalie azar with that. wish there were happier news on the flu front. in 36 states. that's more than there were last week. we're really seeing a severe epidemic. tell us about it. >> we are. one thing that's important for people to understand we do see a flu epidemic every year. it's just when in the season it occur. >> it's earlier this year. >> a few years ago, it was determined in october that we had an didepidemic. at least we're ahead of that. one thing that makes this particularly concerning is the strain is the h3n2 strain which always historically is more virulent violent. >> so it's severe in terms of how soon we're seeing it the quality of the illness.

>> correct. >> also adding to it we've got a vaccine that the doctors are saying is not a perfect match. >> not a perfect match. >> for this strain. >> correct. roughly 50% of the h3n2 strain that is circulating right now is a variant of the strain that was made for the vaccine. that means if you got vaccinated and you get the h3n2 you have a 50% chance of being covered. i want to point out -- this is really important to reinforce. even though it may not be a perfect match you're still going to get partial protection. and half of you who do get it are still probably going to be protected and having the vaccine should reduce the severity and duration of your flu illness. >> which leads me to my last question. is it too late? if you have not gotten your flu shot yet, is it worth getting it now? >> 100%. you develop immunity in two weeks. the flu season has not peaked yet. january and february is probably more severe than now. it's not too late.

we encourage everybody to get the flu shot to reduce the flu burden within the community. >> something tells me that is not our last conversation about it. >> no. >> thank you for being here. security around the queen looking a bit different. the royal guards who are famous of course for protecting the queen, tourists around the world come to see them. they are no longer standing directly outside buckingham palace for fear they may be a target for terrorists. keir simmons explains. >> reporter: the royals always prefer to get close to their public but concern is growing over the hfrn present threat of isis or al qaeda-inspired attack. >> we have to be vigilant. >> reporter: the queen was surrounded by plain clothes security. even so one member of the public almost collided with her. now the largely ceremonial royal guard whose stand duty outside palaces and historic landmarks have pulled back. the guards are armed only with

we're back at 7:40. this morning we're talking to two true inspirations olympic athletes starting over after challenges. one dominating the sport she has worked on for years and the other returning to normal of a paralyzing injury. we start with downhill skier lindsey vonn who has told natalie how hard she's worked to get back in the game. >> lindsey vonn was expected to be a big star at the sochi olympics. then came february 2013.

the world ski championships in austria. during an extended weather delay, the snow on the course had changed. >> it was soft and slushy and i went off the jump in the middle of the course and i just landed in slop. >> vonn over the top! >> lindsay did about as much damage to a knee as one could do. she soon underwent reconstruct reconstructive knee surgery. >> day one. >> she decided to chronicle that surgery and painful rehabilitation process for an upcoming documentary to air on nbc. and by her side offering support, was a new boyfriend, golfer tiger woods. how did the relationship develop? >> we're actually friends for a long time. just one thing led to the other. >> the two had a lot in common. both had trained relentlessly from an early age to reach the top of their sport. dating tiger jolted lindsey into a whole knew stratosphere of

fame and scrutiny. how does that affect you, the glare of the media on the relationship? >> it was difficult in the beginning. it wasn't what people expected. i don't care what anyone else thinks. as long as we're happy that's what matters. >> have you gotten tiger on skis yet? >> yeah. he's really good. >> really? >> yeah. >> she made her comeback with the win at world cup in lake louise alberta. >> incredible. finally, i'm back. >> she followed that up with another world cup win in france putting her just one win away from tying the all-time record of 62 world cup wins. >> yeah! i love my job. skiing with her. lindsay plans to continue to push to excel and, most importantly, to ski and live by her own rules. injury won't stop you? >> no. nothing will stop me. i swear. >> she is incredible.

amazing how quick you recover from a catastrophic injury now world class once again. >> she always says don't count me out. we never will. another incredible story, really inspiring athlete, former olympic swimmer, amy van dyken rouen. her life was dramatically changed when she was paralyzed in june. matt sat down with her and her former nfl kicker husband tom rouen. >> reporter: in the fight of her life. >> van dyken, stretching for the wall. she's got the gold! >> she was one of the greatest olympic champions of all time. am i allowed to sit here? >> yeah. >> what are they doing to you? >> stretching. >> now paraplegic. although i aim to not be one day, that's what i am. >> amy left the hospital in august. she was thankful optimistic

but worried about what day-to-day living would be like back home in scottsdale arizona. >> the way that my house is right now, i will not be able to take a shower. even cooking, i can't see if the pots are boiling. i won't be able to reach the faucet to do the dishes. >> i started looking into the changes that needed to be made. i ended up getting in touch with george. >> george is george olyphant host of the home improvement show george to the rescue. amy didn't know anything about george and his army of volunteers doing the renovations. when she finally returned home three months to the day after her accident it was overwhelming. >> thank you for everything. >> because of all the changes, amy can now do many of the simple things she used to take for granted. >> oh, my gosh! >> now i can cook. i can do the dishes. >> for her transportation, tom had wanted to train in her

high wind high seas lots of rain. decent weather and then thunderstorms just ripped through here slowing the entire recovery process down quite a bit. sheinelle? >> katy thank you. president obama is remembering former new york governor mario cuomo as a champion of progressive values. three-term democrat died of natural causes thursday hours after his son, andrew was sworn in for his second term as governor. mario cuomo was the son of italian immigrants who graduate from law school at the top of his class. as governor, he electrified the 1984 democratic national convention with a key note speech challenging ronald reagan's vision of america. he never ran for president himself. mario cuomo was 82 years old. an illinois man was in the surprise of his life this week when he found out he had a piece of a car embedded in his arm since a horrible crash more than 50 years ago.

>> oh, it's the most wonderful feeling. and not as a filmmaker. as somebody who really loves and believes in louis. i loved him so much. he's so funny. he is really one of the funniest people you ever would want to meet. so full of life. so aware of the hardest aspects of life and, through that embraced every day with this fire and this humor and this love that was infectious. >> how much more responsible do you feel to a story when you know that there's a real person attached to this and that you've met and now are connected to? >> it's a huge responsibility. i lost so many nights -- sleepless nights and so many moments of self doubt. >> really? >> oh, of course. because -- especially when someone is your own actual hero

my second film. and it's a huge film. and there was so many things from plane crashes, i never directed anything like that. i often thought this is too important and this is too big and i don't know how i got here and i don't want to fail him. i don't want to fail him. >> in fact i just co-hosted the rose parade and he was the posthumous grand marshall. what do you think he would have thought of that? >> oh, he would have loved it. he grew up here and every year he watched it on television. this was a big deal for him. he would have been excited. >> when i was watching him, the scene where his mom is making gnochi he's sitting on -- for half a moment i thought that almost looks like angelina jolie making the gnochi. >> oh, my kids would disagree. they've never seen me make gnochi. i think they would love that image. i should try that. i would love to think of myself as a classic mom at home.

>> are you a decent cook? >> i'll learn this random exotic meal from -- i can do an interesting afghan dish with egg plant but don't know how to make basic spaghetti. i'm that person. >> this young, and up coming actor, some guy named brad pitt. what was that like directing your husband? >> it was great. it's a funny thing. i think it's more that you get nervous because you love somebody and you want to help them. as a director, you want to help your actor. s a wife you really want to help your husband. so you want everything to be right for them. but there's something we found, which is if you work with the person you love and trust most in this world, it's pretty great because you really try things with each other and you trust and you -- as artists, you get very bold because you're together. >> is it true you described it as a honeymoon? >> well it technically was our

honeymoon. we had this little cove where we filmed and built this hotel on one side and the other side was the house where the kids were doing school. so it was like a really strange little relationship. it was like a honeymoon, just on-screen, slightly dysfunctional one. >> you talk about supporting each other. it's time for the premiere of "unbroken" and you're down with the chicken pox. and brad ends up taking three of the kids. what was the -- i mean here is your big moment and chicken pox? >> it was so absurd. what was even stranger is i think, during the day before i was trying to do interviews and i kept thinking what -- what's happening? strange. of course it was really fun. my kids took the mantle. they took it very seriously when i said you've got to represent mom. my kids even loved louis. i said you have to do this for louis. they got out there. they were excited about the mission. >> i love siloh wearing the suit

and tie. >> and she had louis' shoe on that he wore in 1940. >> it is truly, in a sense, the gift that keeps giving. >> he will be an inspiration to us all. >> you can tell this was really a labor of love for her. and audiences really have responded to it. >> the movie has done great. >> so much going for it. she was also the subject -- i asked her, she was the subject in one of those sony release hacked e-mails. she didn't want to get into that so we moved on. she obviously has shown her chops as a director. she actually in a way, likes directing more than acting. >> challenge to her. >> exactly. >> we'll have more of your interview in our next hour. >> yep. >> let's send it over to savannah. >> thank you so much. in this new year we decided to take over an entire issue of "parade" magazine with the help of their staff and get some tips and tools to get everybody off

to the right start in 2015. we're joined by the editorial director of "parade" magazine. an amazing resolution success story of her own. we think it's really inspiring. lisa good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. >> we take over "parade" magazine the "today" show anchors. how do we do? >> you did great. thanks for doing my job. >> oh, my gosh! you made it easy that's for sure. we'll talk about the dos and don'ts tips we provided. you have a great story. you made a new year's resolution a few years back. you're 5'4" you were 180. you lost 74 pounds. how did you do it? >> you know i had grown up an overweight kid. i put on my pounds in college, like most people do. and i really one day, just decided after bingeing on half a gallon of mint chocolate chip ice cream, which i still can't eat, that i had to make a change. and it turned into a fitness journey. i started running.

and running was such a positive thing. it was such a challenging thing for me. and i could see myself reaching -- setting and reaching goals every time i went out there to run. i wasn't really thinking i've got to lose this weight. it was more i've got to change my life. and it really led to a whole period of personal discovery for me. >> and new year's is a good time to do it. not that long ago you decided to pick up rowing another new year's resolution. and now you have a sport. >> yeah. five years ago on new year's day, i sent an e-mail to the national rowing club and said i need to learn how to row this year. i've always wanted to do it. i started rowing and i rowed in the head of the charles, the biggest regatta in the world, competed in masters national. it's a great sport. it's been such a gift to me. >> we're sufficiently inspired. let's go through some of the tips that all of us gave. my do in the new year practice gratitude and don't lose sight of what's important. >> that's such a great

resolution especially forwork ing moms. you're a new mom, trying to balance everything. a lot of people try to maintain that resolution by keeping a gratitude journal. every night, writing something down that you're grateful for, or even using social media to do that. >> matt was along the same lines, do enjoy today but don't postpone adventure. >> matt is off today, taking his new year's resolution. the other thing matt said to us was take a breath. stop. reconnect with the moment during the day. and that's something you can do any time. take a breath. reconnect with that moment that you're in. >> i love al. he says do feed your passions and don't sweat the small stuff. >> i love the passion thing. i think as adults we sort of lose some of those things we loved as kids. we used to play the guitar or piano. why not do that now? that's a great stress reliever. it takes your mind off those to do lists that you have that kind of run our lives as adult. >> natalie had a good reminder.

>> if it has sentimental value, keep it. otherwise it's time to go. somebody else could use it. local school or library doesn't accept used books have a few charities in mind that you can donate to operation paperback donates to troops. cookbook s cookbooks you may not use anymore, donate those as well. and then throw away any pamphlets, any loose, tattered books. throw those away. they should not be donated. make your book shelf visually appealing by color coding the remaining books, adding a few decorative objects as well. >> do you have to get rid of -- let's say you don't really have to get rid of them but are you saying get rid of them and put other things in there? >> exactly. it doesn't have to be filled up with just books completely. leave yourself some space to keep growing. >> as we move into the closet bedroom area what do you do if it's not your area that needs to be decluttered but your husband's or your kids? >> this will give you an

opportunity to get new items to add to your wardrobe. maybe take an hour this weekend and do it together. make it a team project. >> good luck with that. okay. >> again, take it piece by piece. drawer by drawer as you're organizing take out items, have a keep pile things you know you definitely want a donation pile things in great condition and then if you have items that are in limbo, you're really not ready to give up quite yet, store them in a box and if you go back to look for them they deserve a spot in your wardrobe. >> pergatory, put it in the attic, basement and if you're looking for it later you can bring them back out again? >> when you put them in your closet or dresser, organize them by use, casual formal business wear and then within those arrange it by color so it's visually appealing. >> do you have a rule how long it's been since you have worn it that tells you when you should throw it out? >> if you haven't worn something

within two years, it's time to say good-bye. >> some people say six months. >> i think two years is a good timeframe. >> what about bags and shoes? >> those can, again, kind of explode outside of their storage box. designate one spot whether it's a basket or one shelf that all your bags and shoes can live. anything else is really something you need to take into account and figure out if you are actually going to wear. take two weeks after you've organized. see if you're going to actually wear those items. organize it. take it for a test run. if you do wear them stuff it in there. otherwise, time to donate. >> what about if you have a pretty gown? you don't want to give it away. >> something sentimental. look for an acid free storage box. don't use your everyday wardrobe to store them. store it on a high shelf in another closet. keep this for your everyday items. >> moving on to the kitchen. collection of mug that is don't

match. >> that's always our problem. take it closet by closet and take out the items that you don't -- you normally reach past on a daily basis for the things that you actually do use. take out the things you don't use. put them on a table. those will be donated. when it comes to special kitchen appliances and things like that you know certain things you use on a monthly basis, that's fine to leave in the kitchen and store there. juicers and blenders that you may not use, store them in the basement and attic if you're actually going to be interested in using them you'll fetch them. otherwise they go in donation. >> tough love here stephanie. >> it really is. >> start eastern if it's just starting one room? >> start small. >> do it over the course of weekends or something? >> absolutely. no timeframe. no pressure. >> stephanie from "real simple," thank you so much. >> thank you. meet the young woman surprising everyone with her football skills and her commitment to helping others too. planning your next winter getaway. is it better to drive or fly?

down the process, check-in process. >> people will be coming back to work school thinking about their next trip in february march, whenever spring break is for the kids perhaps. we have falling gas price right now. how do you weigh whether or not you should drive to your destination or fly there? >> there is this time/cost equation. if your trip is less than six hours, it may be more cost effective for you to drive f it's over six hours it may be more cost effective for you to drive as well but then look at the value of your time. additional hours in the car or at your destination. >> good thing to think about. there is a strategy to buying airline tickets. when exactly should we make the purchases? >> the best day is on as you know. fares will be less expensive then. >> what's the cheaper day to fly? >> monday thursday and friday. and that's because the planes have more capacity on those days which means more seats and lower fares. >> these are good tips.

now you, yourself are a travel agent. a lot of people these days go online and think i can book this myself on the many sites out there. what he do you think it's a good idea for somebody to say i should hire a travel agent to take care of this? >> a travel agent will provide you with advice and advocacy. they will sort through all those things like the best days to fly. they'll help you when you're looking to put together a full itinerary and when you're looking for advice and guidance there. >> it gets beyond booking a flight rental cars and all those things -- >> absolutely. >> great. let's talk about winter destinations. get us in the spirit. scottsdale arizona. what do you like about scottsdale scottsdale? >> one of the key reasons we like scottsdale it's a great value, running 30% less than other warm weather destinations. it's great for families spa goers, golfers. it has a lot to offer.

catatonia. he didn't speak for three weeks and my parents were furious. >> i chose "halloween." it was kind of halloween, friday the 13th, nightmare on elm street. "nightmare on elm street" was fantastical. but i watched her to watch jason and "friday the 13th." it didn't go over well. >> poltergeist, it was on hbo and my parents were gone. i identified with this little girl. she's a little girl like me. of course all these crazy things start happening. i had nightmares forb this for months. didn't they have poltergeist one, two? and then she died. >> eddie murphy had a great line in one -- these movie wouldn't

inappropriate joke and i thought, what? and i left the room smiling. i came in here worried about him and i was going to leave crying and instead he wanted to put a smile on my face and he wanted me to know it was okay. and he took care of me. >> that's a gift. >> and that's who louis was. louis was greater than we could ever put on screen. >> 2014 you were one of two female directors who directed big studio movies. do you hope that the door gets opened for more female talent behind the camera as opposed to in front of it? >> yes. and i'm sure it will. i know many great, talented women who just need those breaks. i've seen their work on a smaller scale. they're coming. i personally get more out of directing. i love being with the film for years and i love shepherding every aspect of it. and i love shining a camera on somebody else. and i love seeing other actors work. and i love being in the editing

room and protecting their performances and i love being in the -- kind of more in the field with everybody. i like to be either with my boots on and doing work. >> if i can take it i can make it. >> overall, are you pleased with what's on the screen with "unbroken"? or do you watch it and say, i should have done this? i should have done that? >> i'm sure i'll always have a bit of that. i'm pretty good at backing away. i don't see my work. i see everybody's work when i watch a scene and i think we all really came together and we did our best and it's a beautiful memory. >> a lot of people were shocked it didn't get nominated for golden globe. >> we've had lovely responses and accolades, but nothing beats the audience responding to it you know. that's obviously -- when you make this kind of a film you know all the other stuff is wonderful. but it really means nothing if the audience doesn't connect to

this morning, the suspect held overnight in connection with a parking garage rape in philadelphia is scheduled to be formally charged. nbc 10 was there as stephen woodson was taken to go before a judge overnight. woodson is from pittsburgh. investigators say he allegedly raped a woman at the spring garden parking garage yesterday morning. the victim is in stable condition. a man is under arrest after authorities say he broke into the target store in sheltonham township, security guards called police when they say the man inside the business when they saw him there after hours. officers surrounded the store, arrested him and charged him with attempted burglary. the new year brings a toll hike on the pennsylvania turnpike. the increase takes effect just after midnight on sunday. it's a 5 cent jump for ez pass customers and ten cents for curb. we'll have an update in 25 minutes. you can always get the latest news and weather on our web site
