to get sick is. >> weather is our top story this morning. wild weather we're talking about. freezing temperatures moving east. this could stay for a while. >> yes, and going to be colder as we get to the middle of the week. a lot to talk about. severe weather in mississippi yesterday. we had this tornado touchdown. we had five reported tornados. this is in jasper county mississippi. you can see homes damaged, trees toppled with severe weather ahead of this cold front that will eventually drop temperatures. keep in mind we're finally wrapping up the holiday season is. today is a big travel day. heavy rain down to atlanta at the major airport hub. this is going to continue to affect the east coast. it's going to fizzle out a little bit. spotty showers. we have this cold front. behind it, the coldest air is. in fact temperatures starting to drop. we have wind chill advisories and warnings in effect because of this arctic air mass working in. today hi temperatures

significantly below average. it's going to feel like 12 below now in valentine. that's later this afternoon with the high temperature of 6 degrees. on monday high temperature of 0 in minneapolis, 1 below in green bay with feels like temperature 24 below. tuesday night and wednesday morning, a secondary shot of cold air makes it colder. high in chicago 1 below. it will feel like 30 below. east coast is not in the clear. this is going to spread east. charlotte tops out 31 thursday 26 washington d.c. today washington d.c. will top out around 66 degrees. that's why it's such a shock to the system when cold air gets here. >> i guess at least you warned us. >> officially my favorite. what is that? >> freezing cold thermometer. even the thermometer is cold. >> thank you. want to turn to the incredible story of survival we've been talking about. we learn how the 7-year-old girl

managed to walk away from a horrific plane crash. federal investigators are at the scene to figure out what happened on board the small plane that killed everyone on board except that little girl. gabe gutierrez is following it all in kentucky. good morning. >> reporter: lester good morning. amazingly that young girl has been treated and released from the hospital. relatives are describing nothing short of a remarkable survival story, that of a second grader who wanted nothing more than to help her family. >> this morning for the first time investigators from the national transportation safety board will examine the wreckage of the twin engine plane. >> a 7-year-old has just come out of the wood loan. >> the sole survivor 7-year-old sailor gutzler. her parent sister and cousin were killed. her father was a pilot 30 years and taught his kids survival

skills. sailor apparently paid attention. she used a wing to burn a branch. >> she's in shorts t-shirt, 7 years old, broken bones. she pulls herself out of the aircraft and starts walking to try to find help for her family. she's in a place she doesn't see light. she walks through thorns briars 12 foot ditch creek bed and continues to walk in that environment with no shoes on until she sees a lighted house. to say it's a miracle is probably an understatement. >> sailor tracked three quarters of a mile and knocked on wilkins' door. >> this little girl was there with a bloody nose legs arms. >> on friday the plane had taken off from key west and stopped to refuel in tallahassee before helding toward m. vernon illinois.

the small piper pa 34 was at 1800 feet when it reported engine trouble and lost contact with air traffic controllers before 6:00 p.m. it crashed near kentucky. >> it was a problem with both engines which would indicate engine icing. >> today in the family's hometown somber sunday services for a community in shock. >> a horrible loss for us. something no one could expect or prepare for. >> the family had been returning from their christmas vacation. as federal investigators come to the scene today, sailor this morning is safe with the rest of her family. they are asking for prayers and privacy. lester? >> dave gutierrez, thank you. a final farewell for the second nypd officer gunned down two weeks ago. many will be watching to see how officers react after the city's igs plis commissioner asked them to be respectful in the wake of

8501. katie is live with the latest. >> reporter: good morning shanel. four bodies recovered from the body so far today bringing the the total up to 34. little bit of news this morning. investigators believe the contributing factor to this crash was in fact weather. now they do believe it was icing of the engines. they're not sure until they find the black boxes. they were able to recover one large piece of wreckage about 33 feet long by one foot wide. as for the lodge, the area they believe the lodge is they want to get down there to get a visual. they're having a hard time doing it. divers got in the waters but visibility was too low and currents were too strong. they had to get back out. the black boxes are not far off. they have five ships looking for black boxes. they believe they're going to find those tomorrow.

from sierra leone to the same unit doctors treated two americans. a 4-year-old boy is fighting for his life after nearly drowning on a cruise ship. he nearly drowned in a wave pool not long after the ship left port. the boy was pulled out unconscious after someone on the upper deck noticed him at the bottom of the pool where he may have been five to ten minutes. he was taken to the hospital after the ship reached port. edward brooke died of natural causes. the president said he spent his life breaking barriers and bridging divides. he became the first black senator elected by popular vote in u.s. history. brooke was 95. finally, big d led to big wins on wildcard saturday in the nfl. carolina panthers advanced to the divisional playoffs with a 27-16 win over arizona while breaking the nfl playoff record for fewest yards allowed.

congress on tuesday. early on there are contentious items on the agenda. that's where optimism meets reality. >> chris, thank you. chuck todd is moderator of meet the press. good morning. good to see you. >> good morning lester. >> the president making this road trip to tout economic gains. does that give him new capital as he confronts a republican congress? >> that's what he's hoping for. part of this timing normally we see a president sell his agenda after the state of the union. he's got a quirk in scheduling. doing an overseas trip after the state of the union heading to india. a lot of this is coming earlier. this is about trying to get credit for what is clearly a good recovering economy. all of this end of the year press about lower gas prices and what this means for consumer all has upped consumer confidence. at some point the white house hopes it ups the president's approval rating which becomes political capital he can use against republicans and use to deal with republicans.

that's their hope. we'll see. >> on that point, does capital make it easier to use the veto pen? we talk about republicans copping in going forward with their agenda from the start. >> look i don't know how many items get to the president's desk he ends up vetoing. i think one will be the keystone pipeline. republicans want to make a symbolic point here. they've got both houses of congress. they've got enough democrats to go along to get this passed. that will be a test. the president seemed to threaten he's going to veto it. let's see if he does. that's confrontation number one. don't forget for most issues there have to be six, seven, eight democrats that join democrats in the senate to get a bill to the president's desk. i have a feeling the white house is working closely with the six or seven democrats in order to get to a point where they don't sign onto a bill that a the president doesn't eventually want to sign. i think there aren't going to be as many vetoes as people

was forced to have sex with the duke of york. other women came forward. no claims have been brought against andrew but the details compelled palace officials to release a statement in his defense on friday saying any suggestion of inpropriety with underage minors is categorically untrue. >> the palace had no option whatsoever to say something. >> when the story didn't blow over buckingham palace issued a second statement saturday saying it is emphatically denied that the duke of york had any form of sexual contact or relationship with the woman. an attorney is accused of having sex with the same underage woman. no claim is brought against him. he denies the allegation and says he doesn't know him. >> prince andrew is as innocent as i am and i presume he is. he should be fighting back in
