last year meteorologist bill henley, and his first alert forecast. bill, i've got to say, 2015 it doesn't look like you've aged a week. >> oh, thank you so much chris. i could say the same about you, but i'll talk about the weather instead, which is getting colder by the minute. the temperatures dropped down from near 60 degrees late last night into the 30s this morning for areas north and west. and if you look closely, very closely, since they've turned the lights off on top of the aramark building other than their sign the flags are blowing in a gusty wind that's already gusting to near 30 miles an hour. those wind gusts are bringing in the colder air, gusting to near 40 miles an hour in the pocono mountains, 31 miles an hour in trenton. so a blustery start. we're watching the temperatures fall. 30s for pottstown, allentown and reading, 43 in philadelphia and the temperatures will get colder this morning. 34 at 7:00. we'll be at 32 degrees at 9:00 and then back into the middle 30s at lunchtime today. we'll go through it hour by hour and take a look at the

possibilities for snow in the near term when i'm back in ten. right now let's check in with first alert traffic reporter jillian mele. good morning jillian. >> good morning you, bill. so far, the majors are looking pretty good but we have a downed pole as a result of an earlier accident in lower moreland byberry road between huntingdon pike and masons mill road. then heading out to lower providence township, we're dealing with a downed tree right now. this is happening on river road between township line road and germantown pike. that intersection is not completely blocked off, but you can expect to see a lane restriction there. chris? new from overnight, police are looking for a person who carried out a home invasion in the kensington neighborhood of philadelphia. police say a masked gunman forced his way into a house on kipp street around 2:00 this morning. he stole cash and jewelry and got away. police say security cameras, though captured the whole thing. no one was hurt. also new from overnight, fire forced nearly a dozen people out of their home in north philadelphia this morning. it broke out just after 11:00 at the home on north lee street.

nine people inside made it out safely. investigators are still trying to find out what caused the fire. happening today, the man accused of that deadly ambush outside a pennsylvania state police barracks will appear in court this morning. eric frein will face charges of first-degree murder and possibly the death penalty. nbc 10's doug shimel reports from milford, pike county. >> reporter: when eric frein's preliminary hearing begins in just a little while this morning at the pike county courthouse, the prosecutor will no doubt bring up that that seven-week manhunt took the life of bryon dickson, forever altered the life of alex douglass and altered the lives of just about everyone else around here. >> eric are you sorry? >> reporter: the public jeered when it came face-to-face with the man who allegedly terrified them for almost two months. >> there's this guy running around with a weapon and he's really skilled. >> reporter: eric frein is charged with the sniper murder of pennsylvania state police corporal bryon dickson last september and the wounding of trooper alex douglass.

the seven-week search ruined the economy and closed schools last fall. >> we had to be fearful going to school going through their daily routines not knowing where is this guy. >> reporter: when eric frein was captured at an abandoned resort and brought back to the blooming grove barracks where he allegedly pulled the trigger, the debate began. >> i'm curious as to why, you know, what's his reason, what was the reason for him to do what he did. i mean it's mind-boggling. >> you can't go around shooting police officers. you just can't. >> reporter: eric frein's preliminary hearing begins a process of conviction life or death. >> if there was a mental issue, there's something wrong with him, i'm sure there was help available at some point in his life, you know. where did it all go wrong? >> killed a police officer and seriously injured another one. life for life. >> reporter: of course just about everybody around this region knows the preliminary hearing that starts in just a little while at the pike county courthouse is the very beginning

of what's expected to be a very long judicial process. in pike county i'm doug shimell, nbc 10 news. >> and doug will be there for us inside the courtroom for this trial. count us on to bring you details from this morning's hearing on air and online nbc10.com. 4:05 now. happening later today, jury selection will begin in the trial of former philadelphia sportscaster don tollefson. prosecutors say tollefson stole tickets and travel packages to sporting events that he said would go to charity, but instead, he pocketed more than $300,000. tollefson, though withdrew his guilty plea last month just before he was going to be sentenced. he said he found new evidence that will prove his innocence. he's representing himself at trial. trial is also set to get under way this morning for a former leader of a philadelphia ironworkers union who's accused of threatening and sabotaging nonunion work sites. 73-year-old joseph doherty, a former member of ironworkers local 40 is the only one who will go to trial. the other 11 members already

pleaded guilty. federal prosecutors say the group used violence and even arson to intimidate builders into using their union's labor on construction projects. today the future of the shuttered rebel casino could finally come into focus. nbc 10's katy zachry is live in camden, where later today a federal judge will hold a hearing about the property that katy was once a symbol of hope for the atlantic city economy, right? >> reporter: that's right, chris it was. that's right, later this morning in this courthouse behind me a judge will consider selling the revel casino to the runner-up bidder in last year's bankruptcy auction. now, the firm that originally won the bid to buy revel for $110 million backed out because of a dispute with bondholders over debt from the casino's costly power plant. now, florida developer glenn straub was the runner-up in last year's court auction. he offered $95 million. now casino management has turned to straub as the backup bidder saying he should be awarded the casino. however, straub now says the

price should be less than what he offered. revel casino closed you'll remember in september of last year after little more than two years of operation. it was one of four casinos to close its doors in 2014. reporting live in camden katy zachry, nbc 10 news. we're learning more today about the limo driver who was gunned down over the weekend in west philadelphia not long after he started his new job. the victim is 24-year-old migel rodriguez ramirez. he's from the dominican republic. nbc 10's jesse gary is joining us from police headquarters. police are still looking for the man who shot this limo driver and killed him. >> reporter: that's right, chris. the reward now stands at $20,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case. family members tell nbc 10 news that migel rodriguez ramirez recently took a second job driving limos to earn extra money to support his family. that family includes his infant

daughter hennessey. saturday night, he picked twoup customers in north philadelphia. he dropped one off and then took the second to the 5400 block of glancy street in west philadelphia. that's when investigators say that customer shot him and stole money and his cell phone. >> he's just trying to make a living. he had been on the job like two weeks. trying to provide food for his wife and kid. >> reporter: the victim's girlfriend was in the front passenger's side at the time of the crime. she escaped unharmed and is working with investigators to try and catch that culprit. coming up in the next hour i'm digging into how dangerous a job it is to be a limo or taxi driver. i'll have that for you coming up in the next hour. live outside philadelphia police headquarters in center city jesse gary nbc 10 news. and we could learn more today about the death of west chester university student shane montgomery. family members tell us at this point it appears to be an accident. an autopsy was completed yesterday, but montgomery's uncle says the medical

examiner's still waiting on toxicology results. crews found shane's body on saturday in the schuylkill river where they had been searching for weeks behind the manayunk brewery on main street. montgomery disappeared around 2:00 a.m. thanksgiving day after a night out with friends. now, the 21-year-old will be remembered later this week. a viewing will be held at st. john the baptist church on thursday night from 5:00 to 9:00 then again friday morning at 9:00 and a funeral mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. 4:09 now, and the president of the vatican's pontifical council will not be in philadelphia today to discuss the world meeting of families as planned. archbishop vincenzo pagglia postponed his trip. archbishop pagglia was also supposed to attend a celebration for the feast day of st. john newman. that event will still take place this afternoon. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> yesterday's rain is out of

here, the winds are blowing and bringing in colder air. the temperatures are plunging this morning, and a windy day through the day. that's today with some sunshine. but tomorrow we're tracking snow that will be moving through the area and accumulating in the delaware valley and areas north and west may get a bit more followed by bitter cold later this week. the temperatures will really be coming down. right now, 33 degrees in mt. pocono. trenton is in the very low 40s, and 42 currently in dover with clear skies. this is the view from camelback, which saw rain for much of the day yesterday. but now the wet weather is done and the potential for snow starting for tomorrow in the pocono mountains. but this morning, right now, look at the winds, gusting to 39 miles an hour in mt. pocono and close to 30 miles an hour along the i-95 corridor. that's giving us windchills from the 20s to the 30s this morning, and the wind will be here through the day today. what we won't see is any rain. that's already completely cleared out. a few scattered snow showers off

to the northwest will not make it here today, but we will see accumulating snow during the day tomorrow. for today, we'll watch the temperatures come down this morning. at 9:00 they'll be lower than they are right now at 32 degrees in philadelphia 20s for reading and then it's going to be a slow warm-up today. we'll see bright sunshine but those gusty winds, occasionally blowing a few clouds into allentown at 2:00 in the afternoon. 36 degrees in philadelphia. and then the temperatures quickly tumble this evening. timing of the snow for tomorrow when i'm back in ten. all right, bill. 11 minutes after 4:00 now. time to check on traffic on this early monday morning. first alert traffic reporter jillian mele has a look at what's happening out there. >> good morning, chris. no big accidents or delays on the majors around center city philadelphia, so that's good news and that includes 76 right at the vine street expressway. this is the split between the two highways. and you can see just a few drivers out there right now. so, it's a pretty quiet start. but we do have cleanup involved from an accident that happened

who was kidnapped this weekend after a shooting at a home in long beach. police say 3-year-old eliza delladell cruz was found in a dumpster in the san diego area. it's unclear how she died. the baby was abducted saturday after a man shot her parents and uncle inside their home. they're expected to survive the shooting. police say they do not believe the kidnapping was random though they haven't yet identified the man responsible. he's still at large this morning. jury selection will begin today in the boston marathon bombing trial. the jurors will be picked from a pool of 1,200 people. the selection process is expected to take a week. dzhokhar tsarnaev pleaded not guilty to charges in the bombing that killed 3 people and injured 260 near the finish line of the 2013 marathon. survivors and first responders are expected to testify during the trial. if he's found guilty the jurors will also decide whether tsarnaev should be put to death. today, former philly mob boss joey merlino will report to

a federal detention center in miami at 2:00 this morning and go back to prison. in october, a judge ruled merlino violated the terms of his release on a racketeering conviction when he met with known mobsters in florida. and today, a "real housewife" faces a new reality, life behind bars. teresa giudice will begin serving her sentence for fraud at a prison in connecticut. the "real housewives of new jersey" star was sentenced to 15 months in prison. her husband, joe, also pled guilty to fraud and will head to prison after she's released. investigators in northampton county are expected to release more information today about the man who was found dead inside a rooming house. that house is located on fill more street in bethlehem. police say they responded to the home yesterday afternoon after getting a 911 call about an altercation. they haven't released the man's name, the name of the victim or said how he died. police did take one of his neighbors into custody, and they say charges are pending. his name hasn't been released

either. this would be bethlehem's first murder of the year if indeed, it is classified as a murder. after a two-week vacation president obama is back in washington this morning and getting ready to go to work. the first family returned from hawaii yesterday. now the president is preparing for a multicity campaign leading up to his state of the union address later this month. during that tour president obama is expected to emphasize the agenda he wants to pursue with the new congress that takes office tomorrow. now, some members of congress want to see change when they reconvene. republican tea party member louie gohmert of texas wants to take over as the new house speaker. gohmert has been an outspoken critic of representative john boehner, but some say boehner will still win the house speaker post, despite opposition from some republicans. the gop took over as the majority party in the senate and increased its advantage in the house. well one u.s. house seat that's vacant is this one, new york congressman michael grimm resigned after pleading guilty

to felony tax evasion. the republican admitted to underreporting receipts from a restaurant he ran between 2007 and 2010. he also had undocumented immigrant workers and paid them cash but did not report it to the government. 4:18 now, and divers have returned to the java sea this morning, hoping to find the wreckage of airasia flight 8501. sonar detected five large objects in the water over the weekend. officials say the weather is better today and the waters are calmer, and that should help their mission. the plane crashed more than a week ago with 162 people on board. search teams have found 37 bodies. most of the victims are believed to be inside the plane. investigators are hoping the 7-year-old sole survivor of a plane crash in kentucky could help them figure out why the plane went down. sailor gutzler survived the crash that killed her parents, sister and cousin. she managed to get out of the plane and walk almost a mile through the woods to find help. the pilot of the plane reported engine trouble before it

crashed. the ntsb says a preliminary report will be released in about ten days. take a look at this remarkable sight in the uk. a cargo ship sitting high and almost dry tilting at about a 45-degree angle near the port of southampton. the owner of the car carrier says the ship was intentionally wrecked on saturday to keep it from capsizing and save everyone on board. all 24 crew members were rescued. well north korea's slamming the u.s. for imposing sanctions against several government officials in the wake of the sony cyber attack. a statement from north korea's foreign minister accused of u.s. of stirring up hostility toward pyongyang. the u.s. imposed the sanctions on friday calling it an opening move in response to the hacking. north korea continues to deny any involvement. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> here comes the wind. the wind is really ramping up this morning. we've got wind gusts to near 30

miles an hour in philadelphia. dry, though. the rain has finally moved out. a dry and colder view of boathouse row. now 43 degrees in philadelphia and falling. the winds are out of the west at 21 with gusts at 29 miles an hour. and look at the icy scene at big bear. rain yesterday has frozen up this morning, but snow is on the way for the pocono mountains tomorrow and for the rest of the area as well. 43 right now in philadelphia. it's already colder in the 30s, for doylestown and pottstown, while it's 41 in langhorne and pen del. levittown is also 41 degrees. look at the 30s from richboro to doylestown. chalfont is 39 degrees and falling. and quakertown is at 37 degrees. these temperatures will come down to just below freezing this morning before sunshine starts to warm us back up. the rain clouds are done. we've got some breaks just a few thin high clouds in the area. but the system we're watching for tomorrow is way to the west. in fact it's moving through

montana and into wyoming and idaho. the clouds are going to make some very fast progress. this is a clipper. we don't usually get much snow with a clipper. we won't see a lot tomorrow but it will be accumulating during the day. right now it's montana that has to deal with it. for us today, well we'll deal with sunshine. by tomorrow morning at 8:00 the future rain and snow showed just snow on our doorstep at 8:00 in the morning. then it moves in during the morning hours with accumulation in the pocono mountains, the lehigh valley and philadelphia and even in delaware and south jersey. by noontime there will be snow on the ground. the full seven-day forecast and a look at how much snow to expect in the next half hour. all right, bill. 4:21 now and let's find out if there's anything to slow you down on this early monday morning. nbc 10's jillian mele has a look at the highways out there. jillian, what's up this morning? >> not too much on the majors which is good news for a monday. this is a live look at 95 right at girard avenue. that's the southbound side. you can see just a couple drivers out there.

that's typically where it gets busy later in the morning, but i'll keep you updated on delays as they form. no delays to report on 76 near the conshohocken curve. drive times pretty average between the blue route and the vine, about 12 minutes. and our only problem right now is this accident with a downed pole that happened overnight in lower moreland. byberry road is blocked between huntingdon pike and masons mill road. you can take county line road as your alternate. chris? all right, jillian. 4:22 now. happening today, lawmakers in north jersey will call on the port authority to cancel its plan to get rid of overnight path path service. a report released over the holidays proposing to eliminate it weeknights from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. to save money, but some are questioning the timing of the report saying slashing the service will severely impact minimum wage workers trying to make ends meet. soon philadelphia's bike share program will offer another way for people to get to work or school. we brought you a sneak peek of this in december. this morning we have more details. riders will not have to use a credit card. instead, they'll buy a monthly membership pass. members will also be able to

4:25. an american health worker who was exposed to ebola while working in sierra leone is now under observation at a nebraska hospital. the patient was greeted by paramedics in follow body gear after landing in omaha yesterday afternoon. the health care worker will stay at the hospital for 21 days to be monitored for signs of ebola.

and this week a doctor from the hospital of the university of pennsylvania will return to west africa to treat ebola patients. nbc 10 was at the airport in october when dr. trish henwood left for liberia. when she came home in late november, she had to be monitored for the required 21 days. she tells us witnessing the victims' will to survive during her first trip inspired her to return for this second mission. dr. henwood grew up in bala cynwyd wood and lives in melbourne and will be in west africa until early february. u.s. senator chris coons of delaware said the ebola situation is improving in liberia. he just returned from a trip to west africa at the end of december. senator coons said the u.s. troops dispatched to the region have made great improvements. he is calling for a new strategy to help liberians take over the work started by u.s. troops. well the holiday shopping sales are over but experts say you can still find some great bargains in january, if you have any patience and will left to shop. the study shows many electronics
