4:01 am
bill henley eand his first alert forecast. right now it's just very cold overnight. >> we're running 23 degrees colder this morning compared to yesterday. plenty cold for snow eand it is going to be sticking. you see not a lot of wind compared to yesterday, but just enough upper level wind to bring the clouds in there. they're already increasing. no snow in the region just yet, but not far away. we issued a first alert for this day. accumulating snow which is light snow that begins during the morning rush. 6:00 to 7:00 a.m. the western suburbs will see eit first. one to two inches possible for the infire area and harder to find even totals that go even higher. the snow will stick to the ground even after the snow tapers off this afternoon. the cold temperatures will stay with us tonight. the radar showing the precipitation moving into lancaster county right now.
4:02 am
to the west, the first snowflakes evaporate before they hit the ground before you actually see it in your neighborhood. snow falling in portions of maryland and that is heading our way and it will be starting between 6:00 and 7:00 this morning. the future weather shows you the start time for philadelphia is at just right around 7:00. we'll see some very light snowflakes bordering on flurries in philadelphia. a steadier light snow in lancaster and reading may fall at that time and portions of chester county as well. forecast calling for a cold start. feels like 13 with the wind and the numbers are falling. and light snowfall will begin first thing this morning and continue during the day. by 9:00 we may have half an inch on the ground. by noontime possibly an inch on the ground. so it's going to be a light snowfall and will be accumulating this morning before it tapers off this afternoon.
4:03 am
we'll go through it hour by hour when i come back in ten minutes. first alert traffic reporter jillian mele has a look at the roads. good morning, jill. >> ron: >> the roads are dry, this is what 95 is looking like right near philadelphia international airport. we'll definitely take this while we have it because it will change throughout the morning and right now all the area bridges are clear of any big problems. i wouldn't be surprised later this morning once the snow starts to move in restrictions on the area bridges. i'll keep you updated if that happens. chris? del.crews are on stand by. a live picture here from one of our many traffic cameras in new castle county. some started work at 4:00 a.m. and they spent yesterday pretreating primary roads to prevent any snow and ice accumulation. after previous winter storms
4:04 am
especially the ice storm we saw last weekend, some counties are taking no chances with what's happening today. to keep homeless shelters operating in case of a power outage and in montgomery county dozens of new generators were distributed for certain highway intersections. >> traffic signals went out. we ehad serious road problems, as you can imagine. these 57 generators have been distributed to key municipalities so that if the power goes out, those traffic signals can stay on. >> one other note in montgomery county all plows are now equipped with gps system and radios. our team coverage continues now in southwest philadelphia with nbc 10 katy zachary. this time this year city crews are using lessons learned from last winter. explain the change in their game plan here. >> chris just a few minutes ago you were talking about the counties pretreating roads.
4:05 am
they're brining the roads. this year they tell me they're more actively brining the road. brine is a salt water mixture that is spread on the roadways to help prevent snow and ice from sticking. i'm told that you can brine 72 hours ahead of the storm and it is still eeffective. the streets department here in philadelphia tell me their plan this year is to be more active with broinining and that's especially helpful when weather comes during rush hour. >> it's difficult to salt during rush hour with all the traffic out there. they're spending more time sitting out there in traffic with everybody else versus salting. we thought that we'd go out and brine ahead of time. this would give us a jump start. >> that jump start is something that steve lorenzo tells me he needs. he tells me his trucks will spread salt as soon as the morning rush is over. if it starts earlier than that they will spread salt sooner.
4:06 am
i'll tell you what areas those salt trucks will be focusing on primarily this morning because of the timing of today's storm. that's coming up in about 25 minutes. reporting live in southwest philadelphia, katy zachary, nbc 10 news. you've heard us use this term first alert weather. to prepare you for days like this, we issued an nbc 10 first alert and you can see the first nbc 10 first alert at the bottom of your screen. new feature to give you advance warning so that you're not caught off guard when challenging weather hits your neighborhood. here's another way you can get important weather information and updates delivered straight to your smartphone or tablet. a free download get it right now at our website, nbc10.com. 4:06 and breaking news right now in south philadelphia. firefighters have just put a house fire at a row home on south lambert street. you see the burned out, gutted second floor window there. nbc 10 photo journalist john
