11 people confirmed dead several others injured, some critically. the french president has already been at the scene and said this is a terrorist attack of quote, exceptional barbarity. >> he also said other terror attacks have been thwarted in recent days. this is the publication that had received repeated threats over cartoons and even comic books depicting the prophet, mohammed, the subject of a bombing three years. they are raising the national security threat level to the highest level possible. christopher dickey has been in paris for years. good morning to you. what can you tell us? >> reporter: let me get it straight. first of all, i'm with the daily beast now. i will tell you about this situation. it's very very dangerous and very scary in france. france remember has deployed military forces in mawli.

it's been engaged in iraq in a lot of countries where it's up against islamist militants. it knew it was a target. it knew france was a target. the question was, would they strike back and would they go after a soft target or military kind of target? it looks like -- it looks like they went after a soft target charlie hebdo. there's an awful lot we do not know about this case. >> what do we know about the gunmen how many there were how they got into the building and what happened once they got into that building christopher? >> reporter: well it appears there were two gunmen. there may have been more but at least two. they were supposed to have worn masked and they were said to have been carrying and using automatic weapons. that suggests a real level of organization even if there were only two. it's not like we've seen occasionally in france a lone gunman taking pot shots at people here and there, spreading a lot of terror, in some random insane act. this seems targeted.

this seems very focused. that in itself suggests a level of organization that will disturb and upset the french security apparatus, which had believed it had been able to penetrate most of these terror organizations, at least in france. >> as you say, christopher it appears to be coordinated and planned but also no accident that this satyrical magazine was the target. just this morning, the magazine tweeted out some kind of image of the isis leader no indication if that's what has happened now. this magazine has been a target of threats and, indeed as matt mentioned, firebombing of its offices in 2011. >> reporter: well it's even beyond that. it was getting ready to put on its cover a novelist named michel welbek controversial novelist whose new book is coming out today called "submission" playing with the

idea that a muslim will be president of france in 2022 and will start impose inging shia law. all this has created an extremely volatile environment. >> christopher dickey i apologize for the misidentification earlier. chris, thank you very much. >> no problem, matt. >> thanks. we want to bring in chief correspondent richard engel on the phone this morning. good morning to you. your thoughts as you hear the news of this terror attack in the heart of paris? >> as chris was saying it sounds like an organized attack with at least two gunman. there is a photograph that surfaced online showing two gunman wearing blackoutfits,

masked, on the streets. it seems that they went into this satyrical magazine, charlie hebdo, killing at least 11 people, wounding ten others. five of them seriously. the french president, hollande is calling this a terrorist attack. the links do appear to go back to isis or at least an isis-inspired group because of the satyrical magazine's history of running controversial, from an islamist perspective, cartoons of prophet mohammed. the tweet a short while ago against the isis leader. and after carrying out this shooting spree, witnesses say at least two gunmen escaped the area in at least two cars. a very dangerous situation right in the center of paris, where militants that the u.s. and other coalition partners are fighting in iraq and syria have decided to strike the soft target it seems, in the center of europe. >> richard, we have to wonder what extra level of security was

present at this headquarters building given the history of the magazine. but also we should put it in perspective. a couple of years ago, didn't the french government take the extraordinary action of closing some of its embassies in muslim countries around the world and schools in some countries because they feared reprisals over the publication of some of these cartoons? >> reporter: france has taken a fairly strong stand against the islamist movements around the world. it banned head scarf, very controversial move mali operation it conducted almost on its own with some u.s. coordination. it's been very outspoken against isis and the threat of militant groups across the world. so france certainly felt that it was a target. it is often the subject of extremist propaganda. in terms of extra security

measures as we've seen recently over the last several months soft targets are just that. they are soft targets. a person inspired by isis took over that cafe and did a shooting spree in australia, putting an isis flag in the window. we saw another extremist carry out killing an american in a shopping mall in abu d dhabi. small groups of people on cafes or in this case satyrical magazine. >> it's a little ironic. just yesterday u.s. government released a report basically saying actions against isis in iraq had had dramatic effect on its ability to operate in that country. yet if this is related to isis clearly we have -- >> a counterpoint. the lone wolf the homegrown person who might attack.

11 people dead more than ten others injured this morning in the shooting of central paris at the office of the satyrical magazine. the gunmen still on the loose. >> david cameron, prime minister of great britain has issued a statement of solidarity with the people of france in the wake of this attack. we'll take a turn. the weather is a big story for us. >> it's dangerous right now. windchill warnings advisories. in fact almost half the country -- about 170 million people are under a windchill warning, advisory hard freeze warning, hard freeze watch. as you can see from bismarck all the way down into florida, right now it feels like 29 below in minneapolis, 7 below in cleveland, 15 in new york city. and today's highs are going to be brutal. it's going to feel only like 23 below in chicago, 6 below in cincinnati. the core of this cold air is going to stretch south. atlanta tomorrow will get down to 14. that's the air temperature.

pittsburgh will be 4. new york city 9. chicago's air temperature, 11 below. 31 below for windchill. and we've got a clipper coming across that will bring more snow and misery on top of that. lake-effect snow will be a big deal over the next 72 hours, through friday. again, one to two feet of snow as you get back into parts of western new york. but even chicago, even though they're going to have very light snow they're going to still be dealing with brutally cold temperatures. that's where we find kevin tibbles this morning. kevin, you've got the right hat but, boy, you have to -- really we joke about it. but frostbite can occur within 15 minutes on exposed flesh. >> reporter: yeah. al absolutely. extreme situations call for extreme measures. i had to dust this thing off. i actually got it in st. petersburg russia, on a shoot for the "today" show. it's certainly coming in handy here in arctic chicago this

morning. of course, i've got the trustee thermometer out here. it's reading 4 to 5 degrees. as you mentioned, and you used up all of my adjectives this morning, al. it is brutal. it is miserable out here. so miserable, in fact chicago public schools are canceled today, more than 100 schools in the chicago area are also canceled. they were canceled yesterday in parts of ohio. interestingly enough it has to go down to minus 45 degrees with the windchill for them to close the schools in minneapolis. but even up there today, as you just mentioned, i would be -- if i was a parent, i would be checking with the school board to find out if my kid's school is opened. also as you mentioned, al coming out of these windchills when the temperature gets down this low you can start to see the whiteness show up on your cheeks fingers, as you know with frost bite in as much as 15 to 20 30 minutes. if you're going to let the kids go outside today, keep an eye on

them to make sure they are covered up. exposed skin isn't going to last very long out in these temperatures. unfortunately, as you also mentioned, this doesn't seem to be going anywhere al. >> that's right. kevin tibbles in chicago for us. thanks so much. you and your crew get inside. warm up kevin. thanks so much. it will be a tough one over the next really 72 hours and beyond. we won't see this warm up until about sunday. and then we'll start to see moderation. >> al thanks very much. kevin tibbles, thank you as well. >> a major discovery to tell you about overnight in the search for airasia flight 8501. the plane's tail was discovered and photographed in the java sea 11 days after that plane disappeared. kelly cobiella has more for us. good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah the tail section was found outside the main search area 55 miles, in fact to the southeast. for the first time the weather cooperated. divers were able to go down and take pictures of the wreckage.

the first pictures of the airasia plane on the sea floor. part of the plane's insignificantinsignia and registration number. the a and x from pkaxc. it looks intact sitting in 110 feet of water and may still hold the plane's black boxes. airasia founder tony fernandes tweeted black box should be there and we need to find all parts soon to ease the pain of our families. that is still our priority. in all, searchers have now found 12 pieces of wreckage spread around the sea floor. the problem is reaching them. strong currents are still stirring up silt and mud, making it tough for divers. more than 100 people are still missing and searchers think many of them could be in the plane's fuselage still strapped in their seats. and a plane has now been sent --

ship rather has been sent to that area where the tail section was found to listen for pings from those black boxes. back to you guys. >> kelly cobiella thank you very much. >> natalie is here now with the investigation into a deadly shooting at ft. bliss. good morning to you. >> that's right. good morning, guys. good morning, everyone. deadly shooting at a veterans medical clinic at ft. bliss in texas is under investigation this morning. the gunman killed one person before officials say he shot and killed himself. nbc's janet shamlian is in el paso. janet, good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning. the clinic here was packed with veterans here for doctors' appointments and other treatments when the gunfire started midday. that's when the warning went out for all of ft. bliss, that there was an active shooter on the post. it was a busy afternoon at the veterans affair clinic at ft. bliss in el paso when reports of an active shooter came in at about 3:00. the va ordered everyone to shelter in place while

authorities searched for the gunman. the suspect shot and killed one person before turning the gun on himself. no one else was hurt. neither the victim nor shooter has been identified this morning. authorities continue to comb the clinic overnight for answers. >> this was an active crime scene and shooting incident is under investigation. >> reporter: why did it happen? authorities haven't discussed a motive but say the actions of the gunman inside the building and possibly how he chose his victims will be pieced together. >> make sure that everyone is aware that we have hundreds of potential witnesses and we are processing those right now. those people here seeking medical assistance we understand the difficultiesy sies that this situation presents to them. >> reporter: detectives are still inside the clinic this morning. it will stay closed today. again, natalie, reports that the staffer who was shot and killed was a doctor treating veterans. >> janet shamlian in el paso texas, thank you, janet.

we need good news this morning. and we do have some. boxer muhammad ali was released from the hospital last night. after initially being diagnosed with pneumonia, he was hospitaled. after further test inging, doctors determined he was suffering from a severe urinary tract infection. he is now fully recovered and at home. he suffers from parkinson's disease and we wish him well. colorado springs tuesday outside a barber shop located next to the group's building improvised explosive device was detonated against an exterior wall. gasoline canister placed next to the device did not ignite. no one was injured. the fbi has identified a person of interest. when a small plane started having engine trouble in new zealand today, 13 people on board could not have been more prepared. that's because it was a skydiving plane. when the engine failed over a

lake six passengers six crew members and the pilot all with parachutes strapped on jumped out. moments later, the plane burst into flames crashed in the lake. fortunately, no one was seriously injured. heisman trophy o.j. simpson won back in 1968 has been recovered now more than 20 years after it was stolen. the trophy was a duplicate given to the university of south carolina after simpson took home college football's top prize. the heisman and a simpson jersey were stolen in a burglary back in 1994. at the time simpson was awaiting trial for the murder of his ex-wife, nicole brown simpson and her friend ron goldman. police did not say how they got that trophy back. grand welcome this morning for monaco's royal twins. princess charlene and prince albert appeared on a palace balcony, each holding a newborn baby swaddled in white. prince jacques, heir to the throne and his older sister

7:30 now on this wednesday morning, january 7th, 2015. and it has been a terrifying day so far in paris. there are report this is morning of gunmen walking into the offices of a satyrical magazine there and opening fire. confirmed 11 dead more than ten others wounded. and the two armed gunmen two at least that we know of are still on the loose. >> french president hollande calls it a terrorist attack and has just raised his security threat level to the highest level possible. christopher dickey foreign editor of the daily beast is in paris and has been station there had for many many years. christopher, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well it looks like now there are 12 people killed

by these gunmen. they're still at loose -- still at large, still on the loose. somewhere either in paris or in the suburbs. they hijacked a car and got away. obviously the police are looking everywhere for them. i think the city is very nervous right now. one thing -- it may sound trivial. this is the beginning of the great paris sails of january. all the department stores are full of people. suddenly everybody feels very very vulnerable indeed. so i think, you know we don't know yet who was behind this. if it was, indeed, islamic militants and it was as coordinated and planned as it seems to have been targeting soft targets, it may only be the first of many incidents and that's what they are worried about. >> it seems to be and i hate to say this an obvious target. do we know if there was any

extra level of security at the headquarters of that magazine? >> reporter: well it isn't completely clear. although there usually were some police in the neighborhood precisely because the magazine was firebombed three years ago. and it had caused a lot of controversial issues previous to that by publishing pictures of mohammed including the notorious danish pictures of mohammed in cartoons. you know the question is what kind of security can you put around targets like that? one or two policemen maybe? but they're not going to become an armed camp. if you have two men with automatic weapons and a plan they can go in kill the police which seems to have been the case here, and then kill a hell of a lot of people inside. >> christopher dickey in paris for us this morning. thank you very much. >> reporter: thank you, matt. once again, 12 people now confirmed dead. the french president has raised the terrorist level to its highest alert as well as reinforcing security at places

reflection back to me from the bill cosby camp was that i was lying. i was one of many people lying. so it's branded me in a certain light that isn't true. so this is my opportunity to get my good name back. >> reporter: at least 16 of cosby's tour stops have been canceled or postponed. last time he appeared on stage was in florida, in november where he received two standing ovations. but tonight at the first of three shows in ontario, canada he may encounter protesters face to face. >> i'm hoping his concerts will be canceled that he won't walk out to adoring audiences anymore, that he will realize that people believe these women and that it's not okay. >> reporter: cosby has promised fans the show of their life tonight. his pr base wrote to ticket

which, you know, i thought was kind of funny because i don't feel young and i don't feel healthy. there will be a chance for showers and thunderstorms. >> reporter: on december 17th, patrick had just finished his forecast at his station kcen and climbed in his car when he noticed a stranger outside. >> there was this guy just standing there with a pistol. and he was just shooting the gun and i was hearing all these pings and pongs off my car. >> reporter: he remembers thinking it must be a prank, a kid with a bb gun. >> but then one of the bullets went through the side -- driver's side door and that's what hit me in the stomach. >> reporter: the next bullet nearly killed him. >> he started shooting behind my car and it blew out my back window and then a bullet grazed the back of my head. >> reporter: nearby construction workers who initially thought patrick was the shooter, called for help. and the gunman vanished. he updated fans through social media. three weeks later, he's almost as good as new. >> people in this area that you know watch me every morning, you know give the weather

have avenged the prophet." they were then engaged by french police officers. at least two police officers were killed. the men then made off in a black car to the outskirts of paris. they are still on the loose. police are still hunting them. this was a deliberate attack. it wasn't like the random attacks in london and madrid some years ago, attacks on commuters. this was targeted at a french satyrical magazine that had been critical of the prophet mohammed and of the islamist militant group isis. >> thank you so much bill neely from london. divers have found the tail section from the airasia jet that crashed off indonesia last month. the tail is where the plane's black box and flight voice recorders are located. a ship has arrived at the site. the discovery also raises hopes of finding more of the victims.

scrutinized, every tweet, every instagram. >> it got used to that anyone was paying attention. i was sort of used to making my weird videos and prose in a bubble. i was a weird college girl wearing neon leggings and doing my own thing and it took longer than a moment to adjust to the idea that anything i said had any impact. all of us girls on the show have tried to find a way to channel our voices into causes and issues and projects that matter to us so that we can make the attention matter and count. that's been the most important thing. >> and there are kind of two sides of that. i'm thinking about your memoir. you recently wrote a memoir of your life. one of the things you talked about was a difficult episode in your life where you talk about being sexually assaulted. >> yeah. >> and the reaction to that in the media and in the public world world, was strange. in some places you were

attempted to be discredited and in many so places doubted. how did that feel for you to go through that on this public stage? >> it's very difficult to share an episode that personal and receive criticism. what i received was only a small percentage of the doubt and victim blaming that most women who are sexually assaulted in this country experience. you know i am a celebrity with a platform and a lot of incredible support. most women who come forward with accusations of sexual assault don't have those benefits don't have my legal and emotional and financial supports. so for me i really feel like it enhanced my understanding of the cause and hopefully will make me a better advocate and activist in the future. >> and giving voice to those who might have been voiceless. let's end on a happy note. lot of great guest stars on "girls." >> we do. >> as for the yet unwritten role of responsible big sister or girl five i want you to know i am still available.

that suit in terms of -- the character was really -- i was approaching it from bruce wayne. that was my way in it was really bruce wayne. the rest of the stuff was really just trying to figure out how to manage to you know do any type of acting inside a giant black rubber suit. outside of that there was really no -- i mean the parallels being you know, i'm an actor and thompson is an actor, but i approached it like i did everything else. i did "night shift," "much to do about nothing" or " "multiplicity." it was interesting. i don't relate to his personality type. but, you know i'm an actor. he's an actor and, you know he's struggling with relevance, i guess. and i guess i think about that from time to time. but really you go to work like you go to work on everything

for a golden globe in her new movie "wild." >> honestly i'm lonelier in my real life than i am out here. >> reese witherspoon, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> here we are in early 2015. 2014 was such a big year for you. i look at the three movies you did. they all seem to be kind of against type. was that on purpose? >> yeah. i mean i mied a conscious choice two years ago to redirect. i wasn't seeing the kind of roles for women i wanted to see in films. the first two movies were "gone girl" and "wild." >> you're basically two for two. >> it's great because when you try something new, you have no idea if you're going to be any good at it. it's been actually a relief that the movies came out as they did and that people enjoy them so much. >> people have been talking about a possible oscar nomination for you in particular for "wild." is this one of those things that at this point in your career you actively strive for or hope for or you think, oh, well that

will probably never happen again? how do you approach that in your mind? >> well it definitely is such an honor to get the oscar. i don't think you never think it will happen again. just the work that people are talking about and appreciating it's changing the conversation about women in film. that's all i ever wanted to accomplish and make a movie that mattered. it feels really good to put good things into the world. >> you play a role that is kind of stripped down bare a woman trying to piece her life together. and she's out in this raw and rugged terrain, walking a thousand miles. if you could have a spectrum of people, cheryl strait from "wild" and elle woods from "legally blond" on the other and you couldn't be further apart. >> the book "wild" was so beautiful and i was so moved by cheryl's honesty and her grief and her experiences as a young

woman. and i think it's a great opportunity to have you know this epic journey, this woman and this face. i never read a script like that. >> to play a real person which you had done before but have her right there and be part of it. >> at first it was nerve-racking. i didn't know what she would think about my performance and she would send me e-mails at the end of the day just saying beautiful things and after she saw the film she said i saw my words written on your face. that was the biggest compliment i could get. >> you're back together with joaquin phoenix in this role? >> yes, which is so much fun. >> you have a lot of chemistry, it seems like. >> something in the universe just put us together and we just have the best time together. we have such respect for each other and we enjoy with working together. so much together that the director had to be like you guys stop talking. we have to shoot a movie. >> last time you were on the "today" show you had just gotten married. since then you've got a little
