the gunmen the brothers accused of carrying out that deadly attack at the paris officers of charlie hebdo while police investigate a second shooting. lester holt is in paris. lester good morning to you. >> reporter: matt good morning. i'm standing on the street where it all happened. you saw the shooting this is where it was, just over my left shoulder the building. this is a city very very tense, a lot of developments as you mentioned, the two suspects have been named a. big hunt going on for them. there have been several reported sightings over the last hour or two and police activity related to those sightings. nothing so far confirmed. to the south of paris this morning, world of another shooting two people hit, including a police officer, a woman who was killed. we are now told that is not related to this. you can imagine how it's put the city already on edge even further in a state of anxiety. it's a day of mourning here in paris. people have come here to pay

their respects and honor the victims. with flags at half-staff and security at full strength the bells of netter dame child at noon as paris paused to take in the last 24 hours. amid a flurry of arrests overnight, authorities announced they were looking for these two men, brothers cherif and s a ed kouachi. police calling them armed and dangerous. an 18-year-old named by police turned himself in overnight. it was around 11:30 a.m. when masked gunmen shouting in arabic "zbod is great," forced their way into the officers of the weekly paper, where employees were gathered for a staff meeting. they killed 12 people. one of the killers murdered a police officer as he lay wounded on the ground. >> it's a major attack on the freedom of the press.

>> reporter: security experts saw the hallmarks of professionals. >> they're well known by the french intelligence for several years now. one of them the younger brother, has been involved in a network for jihadists to go into iraq. >> reporter: wednesday night, thousands crowded into paris' palace to honor victims holding seens that red jesuis. here offices were fire bombed in 2011. four of the paper's cartoonists are said to be among the victims of this late effort attack and in an expression of solidarity cartoonists around the world have penned their own tributes je suis. holding the pencil at the brush, one has down with terrorism, this one simply shows a weeping

attackers who in your estimation have a lot of sophistication and training? >> reporter: they do. particularly compared to the other attacks we seen in ottowa in sydney and elsewhere. they are comfortable in their own skin comfortable with their weapons. they were calm. this wasn't a random attack. it was well planned. it wasn't a suicidal attack. they escaped in order to be able kill again. and so this is kind of the high end of the new genre of the attacks, i'm afraid we will see for some time now. the self radicalized, the self-motivated kind of individual living living in full view pence western democracy. >> and i wonder if this is the new flav of terrorism that we should come to expect in the wake of 9/11 you don't see, thankfully those massive operations rather these lone wolf attacks. we saw what happened in canada. we saw what happened before christmas in sydney australia.

>> that's frankly, savannah, a bitter measure of success. those iconic targets were slow moving complicated, multiple actors. we've gotten good at preventing those now. they just take too long to get evolved. we get involved and we stop them. so now what we have are drive-by shootings and self radicalized individuals and suvs in time's square. the attacks we saw on a shopping mall in kenya, now what we saw yesterday. i should add, i repeat again, what we saw yesterday is probably the high end of this kind of assault. >> but on the other end, the suspects weren't exactly unknown to authorities. one has actually served time in prison for trying to go to iraq and fight american soldiers there. does that just speak to how difficult it is for french authorities or frankly any authorities to track these guys? >> oh it really really does. let's give credit where credit

is do you. the french are very good at this. their external service, dst, are very strong very aggressive frankly, savannah under french law, they've got a lot more freedom of action than we do with similar services unamerican law. so the fact that these guys survive and thrive in france of all places should be particularly troubling. >> very very quickly, you mentioned this earlier him i want to pick up on it. i don't know if we're making too much of it. in contrast to many many of these attacks these are two suspects who plan to get away. they had a get away car. they were not there to die as martyrs but to kill. >> no exactly right. and i'm afraid it's a measure of the increased sophistication of this kind of attack. >> general michael hayden it's always good to get your perspective. we appreciate it. we want to turn to the story a lot of people are dealing with. it is the coldest day of the season across the east.

record lows are flirted with from new england down to the deep south and the wind chill is making conditions downright dangerous. today's dill an dwyer is in minneapolis. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. i think the last time i was cold i was standing here in this exact location describing how i doctor es to stay warm in temperatures this cold. so i've bundled up again. we got wind chill itself down around 20 below. part of minnesota have seen wind chills closer to 50 below and despite the dangerous cold it's the snow and wind with this arctic blast that has made driving treacherous. frigid temperatures are affected nearly 200 million people across the country this morning, but the snow is making driving downright dangerous. in michigan poor visibility caused a family to slam into a semi truck. >> we ran into the back of a. >> howie:-truck and he's not stopping and our car is embedded underneath of it. >> reporter: the truck dragged the family's van for 16 miles, a

frightening ordeal lasting nearly half an hour. >> we're going to go we have no choice. >> reporter: police came to the rescue after pulling the semi-truck driver over and alerting him to the extra cargo. a few hours away a crash involving 40 vehicles shut down highway 41. police blamed drivers going too fast in whiteout conditions. outside pittsburgh more wicked weather on the road heavy snow and zero visibility resulting in a fatal crash. three people were killed dozens injured in an accident involving nine trucks and nine cars on interstate-80. the extreme weather means no school for some students this morning, with public schools in major cities like boston cleveland, chicago and milwaukee, telling kids to stay home and stay warm. and schools are, once again, closed here in minneapolis today because of the cold and down south, several states have schools running on a two-three

larger investigation. a major scare at the happiest place on earth after the california department of public health confirmed nine cases of piece measles, and disney adventure park. they say it probably happened between december 15th and 20th at the height of the busiest season. health officials say it's likely a single person exposed the other visitors. >> infectious to others from four days before they develop any symptoms until about five days after that develop the rash. >> reporter: six of the infected patients were not vaccinated. two are too young for the shots and one had the vaccine. >> i don't think there is anything to be concerned about. i think as long as your child is vax that itted, you should be fine report. while measles had largely vanished in the united states there has been an increase in confirmed cases. according to centers for disease control from january 1st to 29th of last year the u.s. experienced a record number of

good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. they were hoping to make the next olympic ski team. this morning, though their parents are opening up about their sons immense talent and enormous character. >> bryce was always smiling. when we moved to utah he would wake up every morning and come out to the window and say, "mom it's another beautiful day." . >> ronnie was a gift to us for the 20 years that we had with him were remarkable. he had a short life but it was a very full life. >> reporter: their parents cannot say enough about their sons' positive attitudes and kindness towards others. >> hi my name is bryce. >> reporter: they landed two spots on the developmental ski team. >> his dream was to be in the next olympics. >> but their dreams and lives came to an end where the u.s.

city team is located. they were a part of a group of six skiers descending the slopes when the two veered to an ad advanced ski practice. >> that apparently triggered a massive avalanche burying them in more than 12-feet of snow. first responders and several u.s. ski team members were not able to reach ronnie and bryce bryce in time. >> there was a massive slide. they were just caught up in it. it's just the definition of a tragedy. there is no one to blame. >> but instead of looking for blame, the families instead, found comfort from the outdoors where people few them the best. >> as a family we are sticking together supporting each other. >> they will support him in a vigil in a small community where he grew up. another tight knit community in utah rallied around bryce's family.

nbc's stephanie gosk is in hartford. she spoke to the girl's mother. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. right now the 17-year-old in this case is in hartford being treated for hodgkin's lymphoma against her will. it's treatment to potentially save her life. today lawyers will argue she is mature enough to make that decision on her own. >> cassandra has always said if she has cancer she would not do cheem mo meaning because it's poison. >> reporter: the doctors say it would increase her survival by 85%. one doctor said refusing treatment would be akin to suicide. in december a judge concluded, kassan zra's mother has engaged in a palsive refusal to follow reasonable medical advice for her mortally child and handed all the decisions over the department of children and families. >> this is her body she should be able do whatever she wants to

another idea. i said well that last one worked out okay i'm in. they said do you want to hear the idea first? i said "okay." so they pitched me the whole season at lunch, not just the pilot. they had the whole thing, no notes, off the top of their heads, it's blow-by-blow. i was so impressed. >> you have been very careful to make people understand it is a fictional matt leblanc there are big differences between you, the guy i'm sitting across from and the guy i watch on" episodes." what's the major difference? >> hmm. i think i'm a little more responsible, hopefully, than he is. >> this matt leblanc. >> this matt leblanc. i don't think i'm as probably not as fun to hang out with. he's really manufactured and it's been really 21 to play and be the brunt of all these jokes. i've always said about this part playing myself that i don't mind being the brunt of the joke if it's a great joke. thus far, they have been pretty
