great weekend. "today" show is up next. see you in 25 minutes for updates. >> have a great day thanks for watch. good morning. break ing breaking news. cornerered. the alleged gunmen in that paris shooting holed up taking at least one hostage and negotiating with police as we speak, saying they want to die as martyrs. closing runways and school ss and we're live at the scene "today," friday, january 9th, 2015. >> announcer: from nbc news this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everyone.
7:01 am
welcome to "today" on a friday morning. it's a busy one. matt has the day off. carson daly is here. 48 hours after that terror attack in paris, there is a massive operation under way to capture the brothers involved in that massacre. in a small town northeast of paris, very near charles de gualle airport as well. we have two reports to get to nbc's lester holt in paris. we want to start with nbc's bill neely at the scene. bill what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, savannah. after the massacre and the manhunt now, the siege about five hours ago, the two suspects in that massacre the kouachi brothers were chased to an industrial area a few hundred yards from here. they are holding one hostage and totally surrounded by literally hundreds of french

7:03 am
part of the story. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. what an emotional roller coaster ride this country has been on the last 48 hours. these two men could have walked through this plaza or any street in paris and been unknown a week ago. now their pictures are all over tv and we're learning security forces had known of them all along. the standoff comes less than 48 hours after a massacre at charlie hebd o. said kouachi's passport was left in the abandoned getaway car. a wanna-be rapper was arrested in 2008 convicted of trying to funnel fighters to iraq to join the insurgency. filmmaker spoke to those who knew him well.

7:05 am
police woman who had been shot and killed. another person wounded in a sub suburb south of paris. this morning, press reports that there is a link that they may be the same jihadi network that these two brothers are suspected of belonging to. we have not confirmed that. >> michael sheehan, assistant secretary of defense for special operations nbc news analysts. i'll start with you, donald. you were at the fbi, have been involved in scenes like this take us inside what's likely happen ing happening. have you two hostages -- excuse me, two suspects, who want to die as martyrs, holding one hostage. what is happening? >> so many things at once. you have this tactical situation on the ground with the hostage. that's the first priority. you want to try to protect the lives of any hostages. at the same time, the priority
7:06 am
for the french authorities would be to see if they can exact intelligence about what their network might look like training and other things. and behind the scenes you're going to have so many people going out and trying to conduct interviews of potential sources, human intelligence working with the liaison authorities to see what other forms of intelligence there are about these guys and their network. it's extremely -- it's significant that these guys were part of aqap al qaeda network in yemen. and their m.o. really is to export terrorism to the west. we've seen that with the underwear bomber and these other alleged plots with printers and so forth. unlike isis where they're more centrally focussed and controlling their area aqap wants to take this fight to the west. it appears that's what these guys have done. >> michael, my first question has really to do with this conversation that spaernl going on between the hostage takers
7:07 am
these brothers, and the authorities. what kind of negotiations take place in a situation like this? >> right now the negotiators are trying to buy time and wear these guys down so they can take them out without jeopardizing the life of the hostage. these guys have said they want -- they are ready to die. they probably are. right now what they really want to do is protect the life of the hostage and take these guys alive, as don said to get intelligence from them about the networks they're connected to both back to yemen and perhaps the recruiting network for fighters to iraq and syria. >> let me ask you about that. don also mentioned the connection to aqap the al qaeda wing in yemen. based on what we know, would you suspect this is something that was actually directed by al qaeda in yemen or do you think these are two men who were inspired by al qaeda in yemen, but acting on their own essentially? michael?
7:08 am
>> oh, yes. i think that yemen definitely was involved in this. inspire magazine published in yemen directly targeted this newspaper as well as the editor. so these guys knew what they were doing. directly managed by the alcohol network in yemen, they were definitely inspired by them directed by them and so this was a targeted attack with strategic implications for al qaeda in the arabian peninsula and all their networks in europe. >> don, as i turn to you, you can't imagine a situation of higher danger for authorities there, those who are close. it's heartbreaking to think about teachers and schools nearby reading nursery rhymes to comfort students. you have two suspects who probably think there's no way out. they're willing to die. how do you minimize the danger to the surrounding areas as well as the police officers trying to bring this thing to an end? >> you have to contain the perimeter, contain the area.
7:09 am
they're not going to let these guys get back out on the run again. as mike mentioned, now it's to try to buy time. wear these guys out. they're under stress. they've been on the run for a while. hopefully, they will make mistake that is will allow the french authorities to maybe launch an operation where they feel like there will be no more loss of life. but it's an extremely dangerous and volatile situation, without a doubt. >> we're looking at some of the pictures we're getting from this town called dammartin en goele. do you assume that these were suspects who were actually trying to get back to paris, maybe making a run for the airport or do you think that just might be coincidence? >> it could be coincidence. these guys knew what they were doing. perhaps they were going to the airport to have a major standoff because they understand the importance of the media aspects of this terrorist attack. perhaps they were trying to get away which is really impossible. nevertheless they have been
7:10 am
captured. they're cornered. they're not getting out of there. this drama will probably come to conclusion within the next hours or so. hopefully the french will be able to launch an operation that will save the hostage, get these two guys alive. they have weapons and may go down shooting. >> as we woke up we learned more about these two brothers don, including the fact that the older brother apparently had some training in yemen, the younger brother was known to french authorities. a lot of people are saying did the french intelligence officials drop the ball? did they let them slip through the cracks when essentially they were hiding in plain sight? >> when people are on the radar of law enforcement to a certain agree, they were on the no-fly list. but the fact of the matter to follow people around 24 hours a day, it takes so many resources. we couldn't do it here. they can't do it there. that's where you try to really have a good network of human intelligence people on the
7:11 am
ground that will try to tip you off if something is going to happen. you know the old saying, see something, say something. but if these guys are keeping their plan to themselves and not telling anybody and suddenly they decide to attack it's difficult for law enforcement. >> difficult, indeed. this just speaks to that. bill neely north of paris, we're seeing a bit more police activity. can you tell us what you see? >> reporter: yes. in the last few minutes there has been a lot of activity lot of sirens glaring, blue lights people going in. it does seem like the police have this building totally surrounded and we're talking about reinforcements. nbc news has spoken to one of the members of anti-terrorist force who, himself, has spoken to people on the ground here. he says the priority is first of all, the hostage, that the hostage should not be killed. police will not move in unless that hostage has been killed or unless negotiations with these two men break down completely.
7:12 am
one other anecdote that's interesting, they spoke to a man who showed up at this printing press and greeted a man whom he believed to be a police officer, dressed in black with a gun. it then appeared that this man was not a police officer. he said you get out of here. we don't kill civilians. so the salesman turned on his heels and left. that's another possible encounter with these brothers a man who said we don't kill civilians. from a lawmaker we know they have said we want to die here as martyrs. >> unfolding situation. bill please stand by. we'll continue to follow this and have the very latest throughout the morning. don barrelli michael sheehan, thank you so much. the misery being felt by millions this morning still in the grip of that dangerous arctic blast. al what are we looking at
