massive rally in paris. around 1 million people taking to the streets, a tremendous show of unity in the face of the terror attack that rock had the country. leaders attending including eric holder. bill is live in paris this morning. bill good morning. >> reporter: good morning erica. after a week of horror that has sered itself into the soul of france a day of defiance. tens ofss gathered. you can see the flags ready for this march. leaders from britain, israel germany ready to march too. this could be the biggest rally since the city was liberate ed from the nazis. it's not just here. north and south, france has been on the march. their president called for unity. in their hundreds of thousands, the french are showing it.

at huge rallies, they showed support for victims of their worst massacre in half a century. they chanted the name of the magazine attacked in paris. the pen, the symbol of free speech something to hold onto after the attack that has shaken this country. they're still absorbing what happened here. 17 innocent lives taken by three gunmen bent on mass murder. one gunmen hit by around 60 bullets as he rushed police at the jewish supermarket were four hostages were killed. he marie survived the carnage but too scared to show her face. the killer said i have explosives i'm not afraid to die, he says. he knew he was going to die. video emerged of what appears to be the killer amedy coulibaly pledging allegiance to isis its flag behind him.

the video is not verified where or when it was taken. the other two said they were with al qaeda. this was his accomplice hunted across france. reports now say she's fled to maybe syria. the brother of a muslim policeman shot dead said the killers weren't real muslims. when i see that picture of my brother, he says. he couldn't say anymore. today, police have a security challenge as more than 20 prime ministers, presidents former leaders gather to march through paris in a show of unity and defiance. thousands of police guarding them and this city a city still in shock. and erica, some news just in from paris prosecutors. they've said the supermarket killer who killed four hostages

in the supermarket who also killed a policewoman was also responsible for a random attack on a 32-year-old jogger. police haven't connect had the attack but the ballistics test on the bullet shows the jogger was somehow singled out as well. news from germany this morning, there was an attack on a newspaper in hamburg that refingerprintre reprinted cartoons from the magazine where this took place. not much damage. a lot happening, a security challenge, not just here in france but across europe. >> it is scary stuff. if we could go back to the alleged accomplice, the terrorist at the supermarket. if she did in fact make her way to turkey or ultimately to syria as we've heard a, what are the chances bill that second be apprehended? >> reporter: well, very good

question. hayat boumeddiene according to sources left paris five days before the massacre flew to madrid and tos stan bull. after that some reports say she has now gone to syria. nbc news cannot confirm that. if she's in turkey if that is true there's some chance of arresting her. quite frankly, if she's gone across the border to syria, the chances are almost nil. at this point, the trail has gone cold. french authorities are still looking for her. >> bill in paris, thank you. the events overseaed raised questions about this country's preparedness. chuck todd is moderator of "meet the press." good morning to you. we look at paris, ottawa and sydney. these were low tech attacks, people with guns. as we look at our country's

preparedness i know the administration has a strategy. are they reexamining and wondering now if it's enough to cataract home grown terrorism? >> the more we learn about theattack the more we learn yemen was involved. we the past few years we thought we degraded yemen. the scary thing about paris is these two brothers that got training over there essentially were sleeper cell for four years. that's the new concern lester with security officials. which is okay are there people the united states government had identified as potential threats but followed them a while and thought they're not doing much. this is what french authorities ended up doing. do we need to look back and need more resources? those are the questions and hand ringing going on in the u.s. >> there's some push now to

reintroduce reentry of foreign fighters to take away passports if they go overseas. is there an effective way to determine who is signed on with these groups? >> that seems to be on one hand where you say they have found some ways. u.s. intelligence officials had identified these guys and had them on the no fly list. that's intelligence officials doing their jobs but can you see everybody? can you track everybody? i think that's the -- it's a resource issue. is this more of a problem for western europe than the united states? there are plenty of security officials here who say it is. >> chuck todd thanks very much. and this morning on "meet the press," we'll have more on the aftermath of attacks in paris including the interview with eric holder about the fear of home grown terror in this country. overseas the hunt for airasia black boxes intensified

overnight. shanielle has the latest. good morning. >> good morning. investigators believe they're close to a critical piece of wreckage. nbc is in surabaya indonesia with the latest. kelly? >> reporter: shanielle searchers detected more signals in the area where the tail section from the airasia plane was found. divers have been sent down to investigate. that tail was brought up on saturday. it took divers three hours to do it using a system of flotation devices, cranes to drag it onto the deck of the ship. once above the sea surface, it was clear there was significant damage. black boxes were not on it. now divers are checking the area a mile or two away they heard more pings today. they have found some debris including passenger seats. local media is now reporting the pings are coming from underneath a large piece of wreckage which would make it very difficult to

visually confirm that those pings are actually coming from the black boxes. confident words from the airasia founder tony fernandez today dweet tweeting we're led to believe the black boxes may have been found. my main thoughts are fusle lodge. more than 100 are still missing. pressure from families is increasing. a pressure to focus on the search for their remains rather than the black boxes. shanielle? >> thank you kelly. now to michigan and the scene of the massive interstate pileup why some lanes have just reopened. treacherous weather triggered the pileup of almost 200 vehicles with a spectacular explosion after a truck carrying fireworks caught fire. that driver escaped without injury. crews are working to remove the tanker carrying acid. an indiana couple is facing charges after filming a baby

putting a gun in her mouth. the husband is heard telling the baby to say pow pow. the mother claims it was a pilot gun. the video was discovered after the man allegedly tried to sell a gun to a cop on facebook. a pilot killed in a small plane crash in los angeles has been identified as a nasa scientist. the plane nose dived friday at a busy intersection after takeoff. the 47-year-old pilot worked on two mars missions and was an employee at nasa's jet laboratory. center for disease control prevention is urging more viral flu meds like tamiflu as it's not working this year against the virus. 26 children have died this year from the flu in almost all 50 states. it will be do or dye on the road to the super bowl.

needed medication twice daily. he had come close to death a decade ago when a liver started to fail. an organ donation gave him a second chance at life and dreams to chase like running the new york city marathon. >> his goal was finish the marathon in less time it took his transplant surgery to take place. the surgery was eight hours. he finished in less time. >> the chief says rescue teams scrubbed thousands of acres by foot horse back and helicopter looking for david bird. >> he could have been hit by a car. we had volunteers walk miles and miles of roadway looking for any sign of damage from a vehicle. nothing. no. >> he had already beat the odds once. why would he vanish without a trace? >> one of the things that comes to people's minds is he decided to walk out on his life. that he decided to disappear. >> this is a man who is so dedicated to his family loves

one student tells us she didn't look like herself anymore. >> we're all used to seeing magazine covers retouched, turned into glossy and unrealistic perfection. the high school i.d. photos of teenage girls? >> i just knew something wasn't right in this photo. i didn't know what it was. >> she says this was her photo before. and this was after. >> they had slimmed my face down. changed my skin tone and smoothed everything out. >> she was outraged and posted her complaints on reddit. >> i've always had big cheeks. at this point i've learned to love them. i was liking the way i was looking. >> other students said the thing happened to their photos supposed to be used in the yearbook later this year. the all girl's private school says it was all a mistake on the part of the photo company. the photo company tells the kansas city star it ran the
