snow sleet and freezing rain. that's the triple threat this morning as winter weather moves into the area. we are tracking the wintry mix that has been falling for a few hours now. a live look outside shows you a pretty wet picture that could turn into a nasty situation for drivers as the morning commute gets underway. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracey davidson. it's a first alert day here at nbc 10 as the latest winter weather hits. so far one school is impacted the university of valley forge is opening two hours late. we have live coverage tracking what is following and the trouble spots you need to know about. we'll begin with bill henley and the first alert forecast.

tracey we are getting an icy start with temperatures hovering right around the freezing mark or just below. that as rain moves into the area. and rain falling on freezing surfaces is freezing rain that creates ice. that's what we are seeing in the pocano mountains with a wintry snow in the mountains as well as sleet. but rain will be mixing in. we're seeing a mix in the philadelphia area along the i-95 corridor. this is just rain with temperatures above freezing in philadelphia just go a little bit north in upper bucks county and the closer suburbs are seeing the mix of freezing rain and sleet to start with. so some slippery stuff, no doubt. should be easily treatable on the major roads, but those areas and side streets, the sidewalks, those are going to be icing up this morning. the temperature is not bad in langhorne, 34 degrees. right below freezing for furlong and doylestown. right at freezing marks for

warrington. the temperatures could thin out a degree or two this morning before turning around this afternoon. it will be a dicy start today and then change to plain old rain along the i-95 corridor and by noontime for areas north and west with temperatures climbing into the middle 30s. we'll go hour by hour with future weather when i'm back in ten minutes. now we'll go to jillian mele good morning. good morning to you, bill. so far no serious accidents across the highways this morning. this is a live look in the lehigh valley interstate 78 at morgan hill road. no delays or drivers we are seeing here. and on plymouth township at hallman avenue and pastell, use caution past this accident. this is the only accident so far of the morning. the sleet and freezing rain could create a morning rush hour

nightmare for drivers across the area. katy zachry is patrolling the area on route 1 in delaware county. katy, what are the conditions like? >> reporter: hi tracey. you can see right now we are in springfield, delaware county where we are seeing the light rain. it is very intermittent but has wet the roadways. so be careful of that. no freezing at this time. earlier this morning we were along 76 right outside of philadelphia where there was some freezing rain coming down. we have not seen the freezing rain conditions continue over the last hour. just as i said some light rain. but right now as you can see we're getting onto 476 and the blue route. we're going to head north and west. then west to the exit where we have been watching the radar and see that more icy conditions are headed toward people in that area. if you're getting up at the early hour and hitting the roads, be aware it is wet out there and in your area it could be icy. we'll stay on the roads to bring

you and update in another 25 minutes. from delaware county to camden county for a second time in a week where workers spent the overnight hours getting the roads ready for this morning's icy mix. crews had to treat roads all the way to the delaware river. camden crews say officials are always on crew ready to be deployed. now we'll take you to delaware. this is a live picture from our network of cameras. more than 43,000 tons of salt is stockpiled for the winter season. about 13,000 tons is used during a severe storm. and you can count on nbc 10 and the weather app for the weather alerts and advisories. download it from nbc10.com and stay up to the minute as weather changes in your neighborhood. new overnight in philadelphia, officials are looking for the cause of a house fire in the overbrook section of the city that happened along drexel road. everyone made it out safely but crews say the fire was difficult to fight because of horder-like

conditions inside the home. overnight dozens of homes in philadelphia don't have water because of a water main break at 19th street. this happens when temperatures go above freezing and then again below. the water main will be fixed this morning. 4:05 and happening today in salem county, a woman accused of beating up a coworker in front of her toddler in a fight caught on camera is expected in court. we have to warn you that you might find this video that we're about to show disturbing. she was charged with aggravated assault and threats. it stems from this fight back in june. harris is seen fighting her coworker from mcdonald's. the 2-year-old is there to try to stop the incident. harris also threatened the child. a woman accused of running down valet outside a restaurant in king of prussia has a preliminary hearing in court today. according to officers michelle

simon snatched one valet's cell phone out of his hand and when a second valet walked in front of the car to see what was going on she hit the gas hit that guy and took off. philadelphia police are investigating seven weekend shootings that happened over a 12-hour period and three of the victims were killed saturday night. a woman found them dead inside a home on vista street. one of the victims was a boyfriend. the police have not given a motive for this crime. another deadly shooting is under investigation in the brewerytown section. police say someone shot a 21-year-old in the head on hollywood street. his name has not been released. and three people were wounded in the shooting in the nicetown section of philadelphia yesterday morning on wingohocking street inside a bar there. police have made no arrests in any of the cases. the family of a bucks county teacher missing for five days

held a vigil last night. hundreds gathered in a baseball field field. here's that video to pray for christopher tolly's return. no one has seen the father since tuesday morning when he got out of his parents' car in philadelphia in the winfield heights neighborhood. >> all the fliers the social media and such with kids doing callout, i'm hoping that he's out there and safe. that he'll reach out to somebody. >> he is a teacher at the middle bucks institute of technology. wet weather moving in as temperatures go down. not a good situation north and west especially. looking at the pocano mountains, it is coming down this morning on ski big bear. a mix of sleet and freezing rain. mixing with some snow in the

mountains to start with even allentown saw some snow to start with. just light rain in philadelphia. center city really will be out of the woods with this one with temperatures above freezing but areas north and west is where the colder air is. reading is getting light, freezing rain. and that's just plain rain that comes down and freezes on the frozen surfaces. philadelphia international, 35 degrees to come down a little bit more, but i don't think icing is going to happen in philadelphia. trenton is one of the borderline area where is rain has not started there yet. as it moves in that tends to bring temperatures down to begin with. but then we'll see some improving conditions during the day today. right now a clear view across the delaware of light rain that's about it. the good news is it is light precipitation to start with. the bad news is even with light precipitation you have icing quickly. look at pottstown and doylestown below freezing. new jersey 34. above freezing in wilmington too. so those areas don't look bad.

bluebell glenside shouldn't be an issue there above freezing. icing for eagleville and collegeville. upper gwinnett, just above freezing. potstown at 31. pottstown providence watch out for icy spots. midmorning, 8:00 this morning, this is just plain rain for philadelphia coming down. and steadier rain. but there could be some icing north and west. it's going to be tough to get rid of in the allentown area. but by noontime just rain for allentown as well as the temperatures climb into the middle 30s. reading at 35 degrees. look at closer to 40 degrees for millville. so icing this morning. and then plain rain. and it will start to changeover by midmorning for most areas. farther north and west in the lehigh valley that icy condition will hold on to the late morning hours. afternoon temperatures will be in the 30s today.

we're tracking freezing rain and sleet moving into the area this morning. the areas at risk are north and west of the city but we have spots in interior new jersey and northern delaware that are right around freezing as well be. on the lookout for icy spots to start with this morning. we'll show you what the radar looks like on the road. jesse gary is check out conditions in penssauken county new jersey. what is it like there? >> reporter: roads are slick but no ice, at least not right now. but the roads are very slick, this is 38 right in front of you. if you are headed out this morning, go slow because it is

new from overnight in the airasia crash, drivers found the second black box from the plane. so far they have not been able to retrieve it, though. hours earlier crews found the first black box underneath the wing of the plane on the ocean floor and did bring it to the surface. a ship with specialized underwater equipment has joined the search for the missing airasia jet. the plane vanished back in december. last night the empire state building was lit up in red, white and blue in honor of those recently killed in paris. it is called the largest demonstration in french history. more than a million people flooded the streets in paris in a rally against terrorism. they walked arm in arm yesterday

and into the night through the boulevards of paris. officials say in all 3 million others marched through france after 17 people were killed during that terror spree last week. now there are questions this morning about the terror suspect. this video of amedy coulibaly yesterday on an isis website. he claimed that he was part of the group. french authorities killed two other suspects but one of the accomplices is still on the loose. reports say that hayat bomeddiene fled to turkey or syria. the united states joined people around the world to stand up against terror. rallies like this one happened in paris and also took place

across america. the white house is planning to host a conference next month on fighting violent extremism. in the meantime secretary of state john kerry says he'll travel to france this week to talk about the issues immediately. 4:17. happening today in washington president obama is expecting to call for laws on both data hacking and student privacy. the president wants legislation requiring companies to up form its customers within a month if they have been hacked. and he also wants to prevent students selling their data to third parties. the attorney general is planning to crackdown on sentencing loopholes. the attorney general matt denn said his top priority is reducing the state's homicide rate and violent crime. leaders in reading also discussed the gun laws as council members will hold their first meeting since they agreed to repeal a measure requiring people to report stolen guns

within 24 hours. they say they repealed the law because gun rights groups threatened a lawsuit. wet weather moving in. we're tracking sleet and freezing rain this morning. nbc 10 in coshocton where the rain is coming down. the problem is when it hits the frozen surfaces. that's when you get the icing. so it appears to be plain old rain out of the sky. in fact, it is. the problem is the cold temperatures that it encounters once it arrives. that's what we're seeing for most of the area. not center city it's nicely above freezing in center city. philadelphia, 35 degrees, not an issue there with a southerly wind at 5 miles an hour. that's not going to come down much, the temperature. but north and west including the pocano mountains, a wintry mix to start with. could see some snow mixing with sleet in the mountains. and then it's freezing rain that is going to be the biggest issue.

that's what we are seeing in areas north and west right now with temperatures at or below freezing in chester, lancaster and into montgomery and bucks county. and farther north and west, that's where the cold air is. this is plain rain in philadelphia. i-95 for most of the locations are above freezing. but there are a couple cold pockets in parts of new jersey which could produce some icing this morning. farther south and east just rain. not going to be an issue at all during the day. this is the first batch of precipitation. the good news is it is fairly light. we're not going to see a lot of ice with this. and then we'll get a break before the next steadier rainfall moves in. and that's going to be with us for most of the day. temperatures below freezing in areas north and west. 35 in philadelphia. northeast philadelphia is at 37 degrees right now. but look at this. for choatesville westchester, we are at or below freezing this morning. icing conditions are a good

possibility to start with before the numbers climb. phoenixville at 32 degrees. an icy situation for especially areas north and west. your hour-by-hour forecast shows at 11:00 the steadier rain has arrived with temperatures above freezing. some spots could be close to the freezing mark but as long as the ground is above freezing it will be warm by this rain coming down. we will see just plain rain into this afternoon. any icing will be far to the north and west. i'm expecting to see rain in the pocano mountains as temperatures climb there. so plan on taking it easy this morning. we're watching out for the icy spots. rain will be with us for most of the day as temperatures climb into the middle to upper 30s. a look at the seven-day forecast coming up in the next half hour. watch out for the icy spots. we'll see where they are and if we have trouble spots on the road already. jillian mele has that. good morning. the majors are quiet this

morning with no serious accidents to report just yet. center city, philadelphia 76 at the vine street expressway you can see drivers out there but no delays to report. the only accident is still this one in plymouth township. hallman avenue and pastell lane. we have restrictions on 495 down to 55 miles per hour as a precaution out there to drivers to slow it down. once we see more speed restrictions as the morning continues, i'll be sure to let you know. tracy? happening today the ducks and the bucks will battle it out for college football's biggest pride. ohio state and oregon will face-off in the national championship. it's the first national championship game in the new playoff system. kickoff in arlington is at 8:30 tonight. a montgomery county high school is getting close to updating its athletic field. the project has been more than three years in the making. the school board will vote on construction bids tonight for a project at the high school in eagleville. it includes renovating the stadium, putting in synthetic

turf fields and two softball fields among other improvements. once worse is approved work will begin in march. a new grocery store is opening in coshocton, doylestown, lands dale and huntington valley. weis made a local donation to police departments and other nonprofit areas as well. from hollywood to north korea and beyond, the serious moment during the golden globes and the message given to north korea that moved the famous audience to their feet.

the detroit auto show will get underway this week. more than 45 new models are scheduled to make their debut. award season is off and running in hollywood. the best in film and tv honoring last night during the golden globe. the top winner is "boyhood." 12 years in the making. it won best actor with the best actor to eddie romijn. julianne moore took home best actress for "still alice." and after the recent sony hacking and deadly terror spree in france "the interview" was also honored. the president of the hollywood foreign press went on to say they will stand united against anyone who oppresses free speech.

no school closings so far but the university of valley forge is opening two hours late. it used to be valley forge christian college. we'll bring you to meteorologist bill henley now. we are watching temperatures this morning as the rain moves in for much of the area at or below freezing. and so icing is going to be a problem to start with. but it's not going to be an all-day problem. in philadelphia light rainfall is moving into the area. there are a couple spots in new jersey and delaware that are right around the freezing mark but more areas north and west are likely to open counter freezing rain and some sleet to start with. sleet is not a big issue compared to freezing rain. freezing rain is rain that comes down and freezes on the frozen ground. that creates ice and will make for a messy situation north and west. that's what we are seeing in harleysville milford, allentown, a wintry mix there that eventually saw snow to start with this
