a first alert weather day because ice is once again creating dangerous driving conditions. this morning salt trucks across the area are out in full force. a live look outside and we see on the temperature gauge there, 29 degrees. 29 degrees is why that threat of ice is out there. below freezing temps across the area this morning making the roads possibly dangerous as you head out. good morning this is "nbc 10 news today." it is monday i'm chris cato. we have a chance for icy conditions like yesterday morning. we'll begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. the big difference is we don't have the rain falling like

yesterday morning. we are only talking about what was leftover from yesterday's rain freezing this morning. mainly untreated surfaces. the treated roads should largely be okay but there are some treated roads that will still have spots of ice. so take it easy out there this morning. otherwise, we are dry. that's a live dry view looking across the delaware. keeping an eye out for light fog. a little bit reported at philadelphia international where visibility is 30 miles. look at the readings below freezing in washington township 31 degrees right now. down to 31 for doylestown. the 20s in pottstown. we are going to see dry weather for today. but anything that is on the ground that didn't dry up has iced up this morning. so some slippery spots to start with. 31 degrees. but it's not the widespread icing we saw yesterday. 35 at 9:00. we'll see the wind pick up on this martin luther king holiday. but the temperatures will also

be up to near 40 degrees at lunchtime. we'll go hour by hour when i have jillian mele here now to check on traffic. good morning. i-76 at girard avenue pretty quiet. watch out for the sides of the highways there and the bridge surfaces can be slippery. we are dealing with speed e are strikes on the bridges to between 25 to 35 miles per hour. and we also have an accident in delaware clay month, philadelphia pike between harvey road and 495. avoid that to take marsh road or prince boulevard. and our photographers found several slick spots overnight including this crash. this was on vine street in center city philadelphia. it happened around 1:00 this morning. no one was hurt thankfully. and in bucks county one car slid into another at state road near mill road near the gate apartments. it is still an icy sheen across

the road. no one was hurt in that fender-bender, either. and in the home circle section of philadelphia salt trucks loaded up and started to lay down salt on the roads this morning. this was on the boulevard. penndot, by the way, had 150 trucks out overnight. police blocked the roads there while the work took place and reopened the boulevard when the work was over. the salting process is going on here. constituent nbc 10's jesse gary out on the roads and he is joining us from roxborough. one of the more hillry areas in the philadelphia region. what is it like there now? >> reporter: we are between valley and henry. and we are getting a good look out the front of storm force 10. you can see the roads look dry but there are icy patches on the roadway. and also you can't notice the vehicles on the left and the right here of storm force 10, but they have a coating of ice. so before you worry about the roads, when you come out of your

home be careful. the sidewalks, steps and vehicles are iced over. so be careful. and once you are on the road there are ice patches. i live in the area and i hit a couple on the way into work. so it's a little tricky as you make your way through hilly areas such as rocksboro. i have not seen any here heading up to henry, but we'll let you know in the next 30 minutes how it looks heading further north and west. jesse gary "nbc 10 news." and a lot of you will rely on the ben franklin bridge to get you where you need to go this morning. a live look of vehicles moving across the bridge there just fine. all of the delaware river bridges are open at this time. we don't have the closures we saw yesterday morning. a live look here at interstate 76 in philadelphia. so many problems on 76 yesterday morning, but today crews that have driven 76 in this area say that drivers are going slower

than normal but there are no trouble spots out there right now. jillian mele just gave us that update as well. now icy roads did lead to a number of accidents and two major pile-ups across top region on sunday. three people died dozens were hospitalized. two people were killed in a crash on i-476 near markel road and the blue route. and the schuylkill expressway 60-car pileup killed one person. this was the scene of the mess in montgomery county on 76. a philadelphia man was killed in that crash. he was having car trouble on 76 westbound. when he got out of his vehicle he was hit by another car. and that's what caused the chain reaction crash. 30 people injured. and 76 was shut down for several hours in both directions. and here's video of that pileup on the blue route in delaware county. nearly a dozen cars involved in this one. two people killed. thomas michael brennan of landsdale and jason anderson of

dover were killed when a tractor-trailer jackknifed on the icy roads. they were in several cars pinned underneath the big rig there. >> you just don't know what is going to happen in the next minute of your life. i mean we are flabbergasted. >> a neighborhood of one of the victims speaking to us there. a third car was also stuck under the tractor-trailer. the driver of that car was treated for serious head injuries. now, this morning as we watch the situation on the roads, you can get up to the minute information on any changing weather situation just by downloading the first alert weather app. a free download on nbc10.com or the app store. six minutes after 4:00 now, today we honor the life of civil rights leader martin luther king jr. and his impact on the nation. more than 100,000 people in this area will spend the day living out king's message by participating in community service projects. now this is a federal holiday and that means no school. also post offices and government offices are closed along with

many banks. here's what else is taking place, the cast and crew of the film "selma" marched with hundreds of others in selma, alabama, yesterday. oprah winfrey there, the producer of the film along with ava duberney. the march commemorated the 50th anniversary of the vote rights protest from selma, montgomery. it was called a symbol of 50 years of progress by oprah. and middle school students are invited to watch "selma" today. it is called "selma for students." leaders in new york city came up with the idea earlier this month with the opportunity open top students in seventh through ninth grades. about a dozen theaters in the philadelphia area are participating. >> you have to make sure that we know our history and teach our young people our history, so that the cycle does not continue.

>> today is the last day the students can watch "selma" for free. they have to show a school i.d. or report card to get in. organizers say to call the theater ahead of time to make sure there are tickets available. for more on the life of dr. martin luther king jr., log on to nbc 10 or tap on the nbc 10 app where you will find a photo gallery of dr. king. security is tighter around vice president joe biden's delaware home after shots were fired near his property over the weekend. the secret service says the shots were fired from a speeding vehicle saturday night in greenville, new castle county. the vice president and his wife were not at home at the time. the secret service agents actually saw the vehicle drive past the home at a high rate of speed. a short time later, a vehicle tried to pass the outer perimeter but was stopped. the driver of the vehicle was taken into custody for resisting arrest and is being questioned by police. at this time, they are trying to determine if he was involved in the shots that were fired. all right. it is time to start thinking

super bowl. we now know the two team that is will face-off 13 days from now. the new england patriots destroyed the indianapolis colts 45-7 in the afc championship game last night. tom brady throwing three touchdown passes in that one meaning he'll go for his fourth super bowl title in 13 years. and the patriots will face the defending champions, the seattle seahawks who overcame a lot of turnovers yesterday to somehow come from behind to beat the green bay packers, 28-22 in overtime. so patriots and seahawks in super bowl xlix. the party will be at bill henley's house. hopefully by then conditions will be improving. we're looking at icy spots this morning. the wind is blowing but it's just starting to pick up. most of night very little wind so not a lot of drying.

that has allowed icing to happen this morning. the temperature in philadelphia has just come up two degrees in the last hour, but much of the area is still below freezing including the pocano mountains. that will see a few scattered clouds. maybe a brief snow shower this morning where we are tracking very light activity. nothing like yesterday. 31 right now in doylestown. pottstown at 28 degrees. wilmington is right at the freezing mark. look at parts of gloucester county logan township harrison township, below freezing this morning. and right at the freezing mark for turnersville. so it's cold enough for ice and untreated surfaces that didn't dry up overnight are going to be icy this morning. those icy spots are out there. and the wind is blowing. you can see it's trying to blow a few flurries into the lehigh valley. don't be surprised if you see a brief snow shower or a few flurries, but i'm not expecting to see anything more than that. new castle county in delaware as well, it's not going to be the widespread event like we saw yesterday. during the day today, your hour-by-hour forecast shows

warming temperatures fairly rapidly. 38 degrees by 10:00 this morning. as we go into the afternoon hours, the temperature will be climbing into the 40s in philadelphia. but there is some snow it's not that stuff, that is headed our way later this week. a look at the extended future weather when i am back in ten. 11 minutes after 4:00 the first alert traffic reporter jillian mele would be the last person to pat herself on the back, but what a job you did yesterday morning on the first alert weather day covering all the accidents. you were on air on what is typically your day off for several hours yesterday. and what a mess it was. hopefully nothing out there like that this morning. you know that's why we do what we do chris. that's part of our job and that's why we are here for you. but it was a mess yesterday with accident after accident. thankfully this morning, we are not dealing with anything like that. we are not reporting any accidents on the majors around center city, philadelphia. yesterday, 76 the blue route, 95, we saw accidents everywhere. this is a live look at northeast philadelphia state road at

cottman avenue. watch out for icy conditions on the side streets, the on/off-ramps and bridge surfaces. slow down to take your time this morning. heading to lower makefield township we have an accident on yardley langhorne road closed between edgewood road and mirror lake road. edgewood is okay to use to get around it. taking some action now could save you money on your tax return. we'll tell you what you need to do to avoid a new penalty from the federal government. plus the day's long alleged crime spree that got two teenagers dubbed the bonnie and collide runaways.

there are some icy spots with the majors doing just fine but the side streets are a little dicy this morning. right now 31 degrees at nbc 10 at 4:15. and the dicy side streets are why we have a team of reports out to check out the conditions. nbc 10's katy zachry found a place where there's flooding ice. tell us what is happening there. >> reporter: we are right on belmont avenue. you can see behind me here there's a crew from the streets department here who pulled over to this area. a pretty large area. so basically there was some ponding that had occurred overnight. and it had frozen over when we got here. it was really slippery. and somewhat treacherous for drivers going around it that's why the roads crew put up a road closed sign but cars were still able to get around it. however the streets department gentleman is over here taking a shovel trying to break through the ice blocking the storm train, trying to remove some of the leaves and debris from all

the rain we got yesterday. the stopping of the storm drain leaves a layer of ice above. that's preventing all this water from rushing through. so he's already made headway since his arrival five minutes ago. and this is just a classic example of what you're going to find earlier this morning from the freezing conditions overnight. and all of the rain that we had yesterday. and in some areas, it really is not dissipating. and there's quite a bit of bonding going on. so we have eyes throughout the area. we are on many of the roads this morning looking out for areas like this that could be treacherous. back to you guys. and look at this incredible video of ice breaking up in bucks county. this was reported and sent to us yesterday. the ice just couldn't hold anymore. and in lehigh county, a

sheet of black ice covered route 2 in allentown to cause this tractor-trailer to flip over jamming up traffic for a long time. and the roads were not the only icy spots, the sidewalks were glazed over as well. >> very icy. >> i'm going to go ahead and say the sidewalk is naturally lubricated. >> there were no serious injuries in yesterday's crash in lehigh county. millions of people who didn't have health insurance in 2014 will pay a fee undered the affordable care act event though many won't have to. many estimate more than 20 million people who didn't have health insurance last year may qualify for an exemption and will pay a penalty on their tax returns. and pep raigsreparations are underway with the president working with the speech writer tony keenan to focus on

middle-class economics in his speech. the president's state of the union is tomorrow night at 9:00 p.m., you can watch it live here on or on our news app. police called into nbc 10 overnight with an update on what happened. the employee of the movie tavern was on his way to work when he was confronted by three men in an attack. police say this was not a robbery. and they are still working to find out the motive. a renown fitness expert was killed this weekend when hit by a train near burbank, california. 37-year-old greg cliff and two others were filming a video on the train tracks when he was hit. witnesses said they saw cliff standing on the track as the track was blaring its horn. he appeared on more than 20 magazine covers and on the long-running soap opera "days of our lives." investigators have ruled out suicide.

and an 18-year-old kentucky man went on a crime spree with his 13-year-old girlfriend. they will afearppear in a florida courtroom today in panama city florida. they are planning to extradite the teen where is they face charges of burglary theft, criminal trespassing and criminal mischief. you're watching the temperatures this morning for icy spots. just below freezing in the pocano mountains. wilmington at the freezing mark. the areas that have not been treated will ice over this morning as you heard from reporters on the street. trenton is at 34 degrees. but the ground still can be frozen. watch where the water tends to linger and that is going to make for slipping and sliding again this morning. westchester, 29 degrees. just below freezing in

chadsford. freezing conditions are possible in glenmoore from what is left from yesterday. now clouds are blowing into the area. and the key term is blowing because the wind is going to be picking up. we'll start with the clouds moving in and get some breaks of sunshine this afternoon. but it's going to be a windy day today. and you might even see a few flurries with the clouds first thing this morning. your hour-by-hour forecast showing temperatures on wednesday morning will be climbing but look what we have developing wednesday afternoon. a wintry mix possible in south jersey and to the west that is going to be moving into the area during the late afternoon and evening hours on wednesday. a light accumulation of snow. we're talking one to two inches possible later on wednesday. and then things dry out. for today, it's going to be clouds and sunshine. yesterday's rain is gone. we will be dry today. get some partly sunny skies with temperatures climbing into the 40s. the full seven-day forecast when i'm back in ten. 20 minutes after 4:00.

martin luther king jr. day happening across the area. the reenactment march is happening on woodland avenue following by "i have a dream" speech at the new township missionary baptist church. and the unity choir performs at 3:00 this afternoon at the national constitution center. and in new jersey it's the ninth annual mlk challenge day at the burlington county library from 11:00 to 3:00. volunteers are accepting donations for the twin oaks food pantry and the animal shelter. while there, check out the "wee the dreamers" exhibit and make greeting cards with the kids.

separating the myths from the truth. here's a truth for parents this morning, a new study says kids are eating too much pizza meaning too many calories. doctors say pizza is the second largest contributor to calorie and nutrient intake in the diets of young people. data shows on the days children eat pizza it makes up more than 20% of their daily diet. according to health experts, it's all about moderation. but they say that can be difficult because pizza is such a popular food. and another study is looking at the sleep acts of young people. research shows teenagers who don't get enough sleep are more than likely to take part in risky behavior during adulthood. experts say the study shows teens with sleep problems were at a higher risk of drinking problems like binge drinking drug use and questionable sexual choices later on in life. watching the roads this morning in many areas, they are icing up.
