unforgivable. richard engle has the latest for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. we have seen so many videos by now. first american journalists and then british aide workers and now two japanese hostages that are being held by isis in that familiar orange jump suit. the same person who has been all of the other videos a man speaking in a british accent holding a knife said he will kill these two japanese hostages unless japan pays $200 million in the next 72 hours. the way they came up with that enormous figure according to the kidnappers japan pledged $200 million in the fight against isis in fact to japan's prime minister who made that pledge this weekend. the members say unless they pay that money to them they will kill these two japanese hostages. one is a free lance journalist

first time. he previewed several policy priorities. >> around immigration and cuba and climate change. >> paid sick leave and kmej tuition and tax hikes for the rich and cuts for the middle class. he will hit that familiar refrain. >> the state of our union is strong. >> is strong. >> getting stronger. >> our "wall street journal" poll shows more americans are satified with the economy than at any time in the past decade. his job approval improved to 46% with nearly half approving of his handling of the economy. if he had a stiff wind in his base he now has a slight breeze at his back. that doesn't guarantee a massive audience. 52 million tuneded in in 2009 and 33 million last yore. that may be why the president is tuning to you tube stars. >> president obama will have a conversation with me.

the wealthiest americans that everyone said cannot pass this congress. why is he going this route? >> i think what the president is saying is that middle class economics that we pursued since 2009 got us to where we are. peter just talked about it. more and more americans are feeling satisfied or better about the economy. there is work yet to be done. that's what he wants to talk about tonight. we all want a series of middle class tax cuts. >> but dennis it can't pass and nobody says it can pass. people say it's dead-on arrival. isn't it a maneuver or trap to get republicans in a bad spot as the 2016 election approaches? >> matt the president ran his last campaign. he is saying that any tax reform ought to make sure it benefits the middle class and we ought not avoid the working families who have seen over the last

three decades not only costs going up college costs and everything else but wages are stagnant. the president has a proposal that is concrete to invest in education and training. that middle class families need to see the wages go. you can do one of three things. you can either not do the policies and that may be the republican goal. or you could do the policies and not pay for them and add to the deficit. we reduced by 2/3 or three, you can do those and pay for them in a responsible way. that's who the president is propose proposing. if the republicans have other ideas, let's do that. far we haven't heard them. we welcome that debate. >> there was a report in the "new york times" that said the administration may be subtly shifting the policy given advances of isis and frustration over progress that the administration may no longer feel the immediate removal of

president assad is the only way to move forward. has there been a shift in policy. >> they will require assad to leave. he lost legit mas tow lead as the president said numerous times. we are willing to work with our partners as well as other international partners to make sure that that happens. but the timing of that will be something that will be worked out in a political resolution. that's how things like this get resolved. >> do you see a scenario under which president assad would remain a part of the syrian government for the long-term? >> i do not. >> let me ask you a question about paris. the white house admitted they made a mistake not sending a high level representative. can you tell me what was said when these images were being broadcast to 40 or so world leaders arm in arm in the streets of paris and our president was not there?

>> you know, matt we said we regretted not sending anyone more senior and that's my job. i regretted in particular because of the melee that assumed after that has covered up and very good progress our intelligence agencies and law enforcement and fbi and doj and the cooperation they are undertaking not only with french counterparts but european allies to confront this threat. that's what we ought to be focused on. the decisions i made ob visicated that effort and we want to work with our friends to make sure something like this does not happen again. >> thank you for your time. we will be watching the speech tonight. >> thanks so much matt. >> you can see the state of the union at 9:00 eastern, 6:00 pacific time. >> an investigation is under way into a devastating fire in

annapolis, maryland that destroyed a 16,000 square foot home and this morning six people inside it are feared dead. kristen welker has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this community is bracing for the worst. the grim possibility that six family members who are still missing may have perished in the blaze. it includes a tech executive, his wife and four grandchildren. fire officials on the scene said it doesn't appear as though the fire is suspicious. they are working furiously to determine what could have caused so much devastation. the fire was so powerful and destructive that federal atf agents are on the scene investigating what caused the blaze that gutted this multimillion-dollar waterfront mansion monday. the images show the fire erupted after 3:00 monday morning, flame quickly engulfed the home that some neighbors dubbed a castle

a 16,000 square foot mansion on eight acres outside annapolis, maryland. neighbors were stunned. >> the shot of flame went shooting high in the sky and we thought my god, what's that? >> 85 firefighters battled the blaze and at daylight the home was smoldering. there was no fire hydrant in the area and officials had to schultz in water. >> initially that was accomplished by using tankers and draft sites. they would transition to using the fire out in the creek. >> the house was owned by don pyle a philanthropist and chief operating officer of science logic. in a statement they confirmed the fire at his home adding the case is under investigation. we have no further comment. as the community waits for answers, neighbors say he and his wife are thoughtful people who enjoy spending time with

their grandchildren. >> really, really nice people. >> underscoring how tragic this is there still christmas decorations up at the home. fire officials will resume the investigation in just a few hours. they say they couldn't access the home yesterday. there were too many hot spots. this investigation could take days if not longer. savannah? >> kristen welker, thank you. >> natalie is here with a construction next ohio. >> a highway overpass collapsed killing one person and injuring another. the southbound lanes of interstate 75 are expected to remain closed until at least wednesday night. crews were taking down the old bridge when something went terribly wrong. a construction worker was kill and a truck driver was injured. he is lucky because in a matter of seconds his fate would have probably been different. after several delays the man in the shooting spree at a colorado movie theater goes on trial

today. they acknowledged that james holmes shot and killed 12 people and injured 70 others but holmes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. 9,000 prospective jurors will be questioned. he could be sentenced to death. tax filing season is under way. the irs will accept 2014 tax returns starting today. 11 days earlier than last year. as for refunds, most will be delivered in 21 days if filed electronically. if you file a paper return you will have to wait longer. imagining stopping traffic on an icy highway when you turn around and see a tractor-trailer barrelling down on you. one new jersey driver captured that moment on his cell phone. the truck skids to the left and jumps over the median before jackknifing. it appeared to hit a car on the

expect to see residual volume. and on the vine street expressway out to 76 keep in mind if you travel the septa to newark line it is delayed due to downed wires. expect delays of a few minutes there. here's an accident that happened last late night with a tractor-trailer carrying frozen flip flipped onto its side near gloucester county on route 295 in east greenwood township. crews spent several hours turning it right-side up. the driver suffered minor injuries. no word on what caused the accident. more than a dozen residents were forced from their home along snyder in south philadelphia at 3:00 this morning. crews are still trying to figure out the source of the leak but fire officials believe it began outside. six homes were affected. no one was hurt. i'm tracy davidson with another local update in 25 minutes. get the latest news and weather with the "nbc 10 news" app.
