cold temperatures today. >> all right. thank you. we'll see you for local updates in about 25 minutes. if you have to go to school or work you can check in with us on the nbc app. have a good one. . good morning. frozen. as the blizzard slams parts of the northeast, life is at a stand still for tens of millions. streets empty, airports closed. boston getting the brunt of it up to two feet expected by this afternoon, while new york city dodges a bullet and our team is scattered far and wide across the region this tuesday, january 27th 2015. >> announcer: from nbc news this is a special edition of "today," the blizzard of 2015 with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everyone.

welcome to "today" on a tuesday morning. can you believe we walked to work in this? wow! >> to say we got lucky in new york city is an under statement compared to what could have been. we got about six inches? >> out on long island they are getting pounded and parts of new england it is coming down. upwards of two feet of snow. >> i talked to my family. we live further out east and they're getting a lot of snow. a foot and a half on the ground and still coming down. >> your wife call and said please come home with a shovel. >> she changed the looks. >> it's serious in a lot of places. states of emergency declared in eight states up to maine. >> one of the impacts is air travel. the backlog is just getting huge. more than 4500 today. >> in massachusetts the national guard has been activated. 500 members deployed to clear

roadways and operate shelters there. dylan is driving around boston and has a unique look at the area. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i certainly do. i worked in boston for six years and this is about as powerful of a storm as i have seen. i'm in the comfort of a vehicle that is fully equipped to show you all different views around us so we don't have to be outside. take a look at the view out of the front of the blue mobile here. we have heavy blowing drifting snow blowing all night long creating white out conditions. we have seen wind gusts up near 79 miles per hour. we have a foot and a half of snow already in parts of southeastern massachusetts. we had serious coastal flooding prompting evacuations with high tide earlier this morning. the worst part is these

blizzard-like conditions are expected to last all day long. the blizzard of 2015 begins. with more than 35 million people in its path from maryland to maine, it is bringing to a relative stand still. the snow is measured in feet, not inches. not as bad as predicted in new york. saving the hardest punch for new england. up across a 250 mile swath of the northeast, they exercised caution. the commuter railroads were shut down along with the new york city subway and buses. >> let's get hunkered down and go through the storm. we are tough and have been through plenty of things before. >> it could mean a $300 fine for violators and nearly 7,000 flights were canceled.

the only thing was flying is food off the shelves. they stocked up on supplies. >> people fighting for things. it was crazy. >> new york city's mayor asked to check on neighbors in need. >> you don't know if you will save someone's life because you took the time to check in on them. >> crews cut power lines to prevent fires. as the blizzard bore down people shared experiences from the frustrating to the fun using social media. as the hours passed and the snow keeps falling, advice from a man who has seen his share of storms. >> stay in the house. get out of the snow and let the snow people do their thing. >> reporter: here is the blue mobile from the outside. we are a roving satellite truck signalling up to the satellite above. we are trying to stay away from downtown boston. when you get into the buildings, we lose our signal. we are driving over a bridge

where the winds are whipping across the bridge. we will give you a tour of this vehicle and show you how we stay safe and what we are trying to bring you. >> we will check back in thank you. >> jim cantore is braving the elements in boston as well. good morning to you. >> reporter: it started snowing heavily after midnight and has not stopped. you can see that the city of boston has done a nice job in the commons to keep up with the snow we had, but it accumulated in other places. you can see from this yard stick we are at about ten inches on the ground and it continues to come down. the city is shut down. logan airport to mass transit to highways. nobody is going anywhere. that's the way it's going to be for a good part of the afternoon. boston 20 plus before all is said and done. >> what are we looking at for the rest of the day? >> snow bands into philadelphia

right now. heavy activity there. blizzard warnings in effect for connecticut all the way up into maine where they have winter storm warnings for new york city. the next 24 hours. as we look at the system you can see we have the snow from hartford and providence and it is not done yet by any stretch of the imagination. another five to six inches of snow for connecticut and rhode island over the next 12 hours. the system pushes on up towards new england and snowfall rates two to three inches and white out conditions and coastal flooding and next high tide is four to five as we get into this afternoon. the snow will remain blowing. subzero wind chills will be a factor. look at the wind gusts. new york city and jfk over 39 miles per hour.

49 miles per hour at vineyard haven. provincetown 68 miles per hour. we are forecasting to stay strong through the afternoon and into tonight and on into early wednesday morning. the snow still an issue. this is additional on top of what's already fallen. around portland two feet of snow. from boston to bangor about 12 inches or more still about to fall. with all that wind there will be low visibilities and blizzard-like conditions over at least the next six hours. >> thank you very much. marty walsh is the mayor of boston and joins us by phone. good morning to you. >> good morning. how are you today? >> fine. as luck would have it your city is in the bull's-eye. what are you dealing with now? >> 700 feet following the main arteries in boston and they are

passible right now as far as emergency vehicles and keeping the street open. we will be on secondary roads and we have a good night, but the main bulk is hitting right now. >> i know that amtrak canceled trains up and down the corridor. the airport is shut down although maybe not closed. mass transit at a stand still. what are you telling the residents in terms of when they may be able to get out? >> not until later tonight or maybe tonight or tomorrow. we are asking people to stay put and check on their neighbors as they go out there and start shoveling. it's too early for that and not much places you can go. we have a police department who is taking nurses and doctors to work the best we can. we have our fire departments putting additional staff on and ambulances on for medical emergencies and we are asking people to stay in their homes

you are seeing. let me swing the camera around. a travel ban is in effect and people are actually following it. we have been up all night. i will walk over this way. we have been up all night and i have seen about one to two cars in the past seven hours i have been driving around. look how high savannah the snow is here. i'm about 6 feet tall. if you walk into the real snow this is somebody's front yard. i hope they don't mind. we are knee deep and it is coming down several more inches expected. people are comenot coming out of their homes yet. >> thank you. >> if he trespasses he can at least bring a shovel. this storm ground air travel and 7700 flights in and out of the northeast have been canceled. the ripple effect reaching

across the country. tom costello is at la guardia here in new york. good morning. >> reporter: can you believe this? this is la guardia airport and it is a ghost town. they shut down la guardia and newark and jfk for the storm. the impact is not so great. 4500 flights canceled today on top of the 3,000 yesterday or so. nothing right now. nothing is moving. on the ground of what is normally a bustling airport, the ramps and runways are largely desserted. at jfk, hundreds are stranded after being stuck on the ramp on the plane for hours. among them alexis dehasse. >> we then got ushered back into the area of the terminal and just left really. >> thousands of flights on the northeast canceled. from pittsburgh -- >> i would rather be in the

south. >> gina was trying to get to germany. >> swiss air canceled all of their flights. we booked with united but we didn't finish checking in. >>. >> a ghost town by dinner town. the concourses locked up. not a single person trying to check in. >> with a third of the nation's transiting through new york airspace the delays and cancellations have been rippling. in los angeles we found kevin donaldson trying to get back to new york. >> i got about an hour's sleep between the internet looking for cancellations and trying to get out of here. >> no dies. take a look at this time lapse of air traffic monday and thinning out over the day and empty as night fell. the storm even shut down much of amtrak service, the northeast corridor is closed down. on the roads, snow plows have been trying to stay ahead of the storm.

commuters and skill kids trying to get to school. part of me wants to do a snow angel and the other part wants to get a warm cup of coffee. with the travel intact these cars risque fine driving, but seems like because we didn't get as much snow they are doing it anyway. still freezing i have to say. it's eerie that this city is so quiet. >> jenna, by the way, i might have beat you to the punch on that fifth avenue snow angel. i may have video proof that we will show you in a while. >> you can go ahead and do it. >> did you get in a snow fight? what about a snow fight? >> we beat you to that. >> i said natalie hold my hand and let's walk together and she threw a snowball right in my face and started tackling. >> missed an opportunity. >> first snowball fight of the year.

>> did this thing jog a little bit to the east? >> we didn't see the development we were hoping for earlier or thought we would get. what is interesting is the national weather service upgraded their computers and the software and unlike in previous years where we both talked about the european model, the american models performed a little bit better than the european model and the american models saw less snow for the new york area. hats off to our friends at the national weather service. they are on the way to achieving parody among the awards. >> all right, al thank you. up in portland maine, let's see the scene up there. >> he's getting a microphone adjustment there. >> there he is. hi john. good morning.

>> i don't think he can hear you. >> reporter: we are in portland maine. the chief of the storm is here. the snow is coming down at a pretty good clip the past two hours and winds have picked up and the governor declared a state of emergency. the schools are closed and there is a parking ban into wednesday in much of this region as the snow plows get through. businesses closed and government offices closed. they say it's going to keep snowing at this rate about two inches an hour all day long. it was not expected to taper off until later tonight after sundown and not stop completely until sometime wednesday. total accumulation about 18 inches or upwards. the one bright spot if there is one is the peak of the storm is coming at low tide so that the

good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. i am outside of the blue mobile the vehicle that allows us to transport any of the signal to you. we have a satellite dish protected by this bubble and what it's doing, it found the satellite in front of us. it's lining up with that and however we turn this thing is on a pivot so it can follow the satellite. if we go inside it is fully equipped with all sorts of cameras to give you different views of the storm and you don't have to go outside in it. we have the camera to you and tell you everything that's going on. let's look outside. this is the view from the front of the blue mobile. and the wind has been gusting. we have a camera on the roof. we have the water and the waves

away. we have light snow and light winds. let me show you last night. the heaviest snow burst between about midnight and 2:00 in the morning. it was a solid hit of snow. gusty winds at about 35 miles per hour. there was a travel ban. you couldn't drive and get food delivery across manhattan. that was worthwhile. let me show you what it looks like today. i will walk out here to the middle of the street and this is straight down to the pavement. really good job on getting rid of that 6.2 inches of snow. i also have to say we had road taxis and traffic moving by. there is a police precinct right below us and the police officers are going when are they going to lift the travel ban in new york city. the governor is talking and the mayor is not scheduled to talk until about 11:30 and no word on

we are seeing snow-covered roads. we'll deal with the wind as we head into the rest of the day and pushing into the afternoon, especially closer to the shore where wind gusts will get up to 40 miles per hour. it's going to blow the snow around and know is still coming down throughout the region especially in parts of burlington county and south jersey and closer to lancaster county starting to see a little bit more thing there. you can see the brunt of the system is pushing heavy snow bands into boston and stretching down to the north of new york and as we head into the rest of today our temperatures will range between 28 and 31 degrees. gusty winds expected and snow will start to taper off as we head into the early afternoon. rosemary? >> thanks. jillian has a check of the roads and mass transit. >> some of new jersey transit is up and running. the new jersey transit river lines is up and running. crews are monitoring the situation to get more running up throughout the day. around the city of philadelphia the roads look wet. still slippery but appear to be wet. worse in new jersey.
