nearly 80 miles per hour. >> virtual everything they had as of right now, it was stated by one individual and had to revert back to 1950s technology. >> people across new england are calling it wicked and not in a good way. snow everywhere nearly three feet in places. that's not counting the mounds created by plows or shovels. if a car won't get you there, a snowmobile will do the job. the storm pummelled eastern long island but the main punch only glanced new york city and northern new jersey. the statue of liberty watched it come and go unphased. >> it could have been worse. we got off easy. >> a forecaster apologized tweeting we made a lot of tough decisions expecting us to get it right. once again, i'm sorry.

21st century, i guess. >> what is the situation and how are folks dealing with this? they really bore the brunt of this storm. >> it's amazing how people do here. everybody pitches in and does something. they have a plow on the truck and they use it. if they have a house that is warm they let the neighbors join them. it does very well in a storm like this. this was a tough one. the worst i had seen in the ten years i lived here. >> the hospital lost power for a while and during the height of the storm there was a baby born. >> yep. i think there were four of them potentially going to be born. we are concerned about that because there is no way to get off the island if something went wrong. >> now as the clean up begins and sun comes out and you are able to assess the damage how

bad do you think it will be? >> we will find a lot of damage on the erosion area on the east coast of the island and probably the south shore. downtown i know we have structures that are having issues. the water was up to the foundations or higher. the building commissioner will be down there at sun up and starting his inspection. food service establishments and grocery stores without power for a long long time. that will require the health department and those folks to make sure the food is safe. we are not out of the woods, but we are headed there. >> we are sending our best to the people in nantucket. appreciate your time. i'm sorry we didn't have time to expunge your record when you were 18. >> i have to be clear it was not chief pittman who made the arrest. that's all behind us. let's turn the page and talk

about the forecasting. the storm took a turn in a way no one predicted. >> we did see this in a sense coming. anywhere between 9 and 18 inches of snow. we got almost 10 inches at central park and 12 at la guardia airport. the bulk was on the island and new england. the model handled it better than the european model. nobody likes to be wrong. we didn't get three feet of snow here in the city but a lot of people made the right decisions to shut things down. the mayor will be on the show to talk about it. >> what do you think of the weather service apologizing? >> i think he felt a lot of pressure and nobody likes to be wrong. i think he stepped up and said we blew it we are human and we will try to do better. >> thankfully many, many people were safe in the storm.

southwest, and american airlines. three of the flights landed hours before the tweets were poeftd. two others landed shortly after and another yet to depart. all six landed at their destinations safely. it's the latest in a series of threats against airlines this week. five other flights made emergency landings after similar threats were posted on twitter. two of the planes were headed to seattle. >> this is the first time i have been in a situation where you have two aircraft close in arrival time to be considered a security situation. >> they prompted f-10 fighter jets to escort planes to safety. they were later cleared of security concerns and arrived safely at their destinations. >> the ip address can be tracked, they have to take it seriously and respond accordingly. >> thank you very much. >> meanwhile the super bowl is four daysa, way.

two football players just convicted of rape. gape gutierrez has the story. >> this morning two university football players are in jail, bail revoked and lives changed forever. >> this case has given the community an opportunity to talk to each other and our children especially our boys about the way we treat women. >> after an emotional two-week trial, a jury took just three hours to convict brandon and cory of several counts of aggravated rape and battery. two others are awaiting trial and pleaded not guilty. they argued the young men were not guilty of rape but a college culture of binge drinking and sex led to the incident. >> i'm sorry. i never intended on hurting anyone. i was extremely intoxicated and i would like to extend a

personal apology. >> a 21-year-old student had been seen passed out drunk. video showed him carrying the woman to his dorm accompanied by teammates. according to prosecutors, he took pictures and video of the assault and shared it with friends. >> the conduct revealed was profoundly disturbing and utterly unacceptable. >> the conviction comes amid a renewed national conversation about campus sexuality assault and an article in rolling stone that alleged a gang rape at the university of virginia. the federal government is investigating dozens of schools for their handling of sexual violence case. >> i think this case is a wake up call for campuses to take rape seriously. >> they are convict and carry up to 25 years in prison. sentencing is set for early march. for today, gabe gutierrez, nbc news.

>> this beautiful place exists because of it. >> this year it was on the ground. >> predicting sinkholes is a challenge. they ventured less than a mile into the aquifer in uncharted hidden river. a scientist pinpointed his exact location. it was 280 feet below a four-lane highway. all the makings for another sink hole. >> it's like a trap door. >> it is also a time capsule because they found amazing fossils. this is a fossil from a mast don that maybe 700,000 years old and even on our dive we found these, including what to me looks like a tooth. i have seen and covered a lot of

a neighbor's house also had some heat damage. everyone made it out safely. investigators are still looking to try to find out what caused of that fire. philadelphia international airport should be busy today as regular flight operations resume. hundreds of flights were cancel edmond monday and tuesday of this week because of the winter storm. more than 7,000 flights were cancelled nationwide which means the loss of about $230 million. another update in 25 minutes. have a good day.

19 in reading, feels like 8 degrees right now. today philadelphia inspectors will be back at the scene of a roof collapse at a trendy store. an accident that sent three web to the hospital yesterday. bricks fell from the side of a wall of a building near 16th and walnut and crashed through the roof of lululemon. the ceiling collapsed on three women who were shopping at the time. the father of one victim says his daughter is pretty banged up. city officials tell us the owner of the building that had the bricks fall hired an engineer and contractor to investigate the collapse. the city is also investigating. now to the atlantic city casino crisis. a judge will decide today if the caesar's bankruptcy case will be heard in wilmington or chicago. caesar's prefers chicago where they feel it will be easier to shield the company from bankruptcy lawsuits. others prefer delaware where they're trying to prevent them from going on with their own reorganization plan. four casinos are still open at

you can use ground meat, but sausage gives more flavor. when it's cold out you want that flavor. >> can you use turkey? >> if you use ground turkey, add red pepper flakes. add flavor. even garlic gloves to add flavor. you brown it up and it takes like -- if you break it up, like seven minutes or so and i add the butter nut squash. the smaller you cut it the quicker it cooks. you can buy it cut up if you want to. >> is it okay if i buy it cut up? >> make sure you look at it and it's not moldy and dried up. you add 1 1/2 cups of water and let it cook down until it's sauce. you leave it uncovered. you cook the pasta. >> extra flavor. >> now take a look at this. give it a stir, al.

since you like to cook, once the squash is soft, i do this. add the parmesan cheese which is one of the five ingredients and create like a creamy texture. it falls apart nicely and creates an orangey sauce without adding cream to it. >> when do you combine it? >> as the pasta is cook this just takes 15 minutes to make dinner. >> you add the pasta in there. start tossing. i add arugula. i like my greens with my pasta. it's peppery and you don't have to if you don't want to. you toss it together. finish with parmesan cheese. >> that's beautiful. >> for meat lovers, this is all it. this is a flat iron steak that is seasoned with a little salt and a nice hot pan. that's the most important thing to get a seer.

stronger in atlantic city at 22 miles an hour. so the temperature that has climbed now to 25 degrees still feeling the impact of the wind. feels like 11 degrees in the city, 6 degrees below zero in the pocono mountains. quite a scene this morning as children jumped from balconies into the waiting arms of police officers to escape an apartment fire. it broke out just before 1:00 this morning at the washington towers apartments in white marsh, montgomery county. medics took three people to the hospital with minor injuries. about 100 people total were displaced. the red cross is helping them. no word on how the fire started. president obama will be in philadelphia tomorrow night. the president is expected to speak at the house democratic policy retreat in society hill. this is video from november when the president was here to visit the city and support governor tom wolf's campaign. during this week's gathering, the democrats will be discussing their strategy for the next two years. vice president joe biden is expected to speak to the group on friday. we'll have another update
