and breaking news is a gas leak in montgomery county that has a busy area of norris town shut down. we're live on the scene there as crews work to stop the dangerous gas from sfreding. and new this morning, a local doctor busted for the alleged illegal side business he was running out of his office. and here comes the cold. some of you may even see snow flurries to stop the day, but all of us will get hit with a bitter blast of cold air tonight as we take a live look at center city philadelphia on this friday morning. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm chris cato. if you love extremely cold weather, you may be a little disappointed yesterday because we are warmer than we were yesterday morning. bill henley with your first alert forecast. bill?

>> 10 to 20 degrees warmer this morning. but we're still watching the radar for a few snow showers. you can see low clouds over the mountains. camelback has snow flakes. rain drops in delaware and south jersey with a few flurries in the redding area this morning. it is a mix. but mostly, it's just cloudy outside. the showers this morning will be gone this afternoon. replaced with a gusty wind which is going to bring temperatures down. right now, it's 34 in philadelphia, 30 degrees just below freezing for trenton, wilmington is 33 and 20s north and west. the temperatures are going to be holding pretty steady during the morning hours with the clouds in place. a few flurries are possible. then by 9:00 some breaks of sunshine, we'll peak in the middle 30s and then the temperatures will come way down this afternoon as the wind kicks in. i'll take you through it hour by hour, neighborhood by neighborhood to show you when the cold will arrive. that's when i'm back in ten. but right now, jillian mele on a

friday morning. happy friday jillian. >> happy friday to you, bill all of you at home. all the highways look really good this morning. this is a live look at 95 at broad street and south philadelphia yochlt uh can see the highway is clear. we're not reporting any accidents on 95 and certainly no delays. and it's is same situation for drivers in new jersey, as well. between 55 and the walt whitman bridge, a five-minute trip. area bridges are also clear. >> 4:02 now. and let's get back to the breaking news out of montgomery county. and an electrical fire led to a dangerous gas leak in norris town. this is happening right along east main street in norris town. nbc 10's jesse gary is live for us. what do you know at this point? >> reporter: that leak is affecting the businesses. fire department has vented three businesses on main street. 36, 40 and 48. they're waiting for crews to come. the leak is actually underground. and it was discovered by that lamp post all the way to the lef

lamp post. a fire at the base of that lamp post. the fire department responded and determined that there's underground equipment that caught fire. and that's producing dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. how dangerous? well, the fire chief tells me someone was inside one of these buildings, they were at a great risk of dying within minutes. so they opened all the doors, brought in those large fans and ventilated the building to drop the level of carbon monoxide and now waiting for crews to come and start digging into the street and trying to get to the root of the problem. we'll have another update in 30 minutes. live in norris town, montgomery county nbc news. >> also new this morning, police say they plan to arrest a local doctor and his receptionist today. the two are accused of running a pill mill out of the doctor's office in haverford township delaware county. steven friedman faces writing

prescriptions for people he did not examine. happening today, vice president joe biden will visit philadelphia to speak to a group of democratic leaders from the house of representatives. it's the same group president obama spoke to last night at the chariton society hill thachlt say the president has not been progressive enough on topics like minimum wage. mr. obama talked about strengthening the middle class. >> the ground that middle class families lost over the last 30 years still has to be made up. >> now, the president said it was good to be in philadelphia. he left last night. vice president biden is scheduled to speak at 10:30 this morning. a resignation and an investigation. pennsylvania state treasurer rob mckord is leaving office while facing allegations of theft.

nbc 10 spoke to mckord at his home in bren mar last night. the "associated press" is reporting that federal authorities are looking into his campaign finances during his failed run for governor last year. >> i look forward to talking about it but i shouldn't be talking about it. >> don't you feel like folks are going to want to know what's going on? >> yep. that's why in the right way at the right time, i will be making comments, but just not today. thank you very much. seriously. >> now, just hours before news broke of that investigation, mckord submitted his resignation letter saying with his goals as treasurer achieved it's time for him to return to the private sector. he made no mention of an investigation. his letter says he will leave office on february 12th. happening today, a man convicted of murdering a teenager will be sentenced in philadelphia court. a jury found talbert guilty in the shooting death of dexter buie in 2012. he and his 18-year-old cousin were shot to death in north

philadelphia. police say talbert and another man fired the shots that fired both of those teens that talbert was convicted only of bowie's murder. a philadelphia man will be sentenced for shooting and killing his girlfriend in 2013. he told police he accidentally shot baker while arguing with a neighbor in fairhill. new from overnight, look at this, fire caused a municipal garage to collapse in middlesex county new jersey it broke out around 10:00 last night in addison township. neighbors heard some loud explosions. the fire melted the siding of two nearby homes this. is the fourth fire at that garage since 2012. and we have new information this morning on that massive fire that destroyed luxury apartments in north jersey. this big fire that left hundreds of people homeless. according to a report on nj.com the police chief in edgewater says the workers believed to spark that fire were not licensed plumbers.

investigators say the fire started when those plumbers used a blow torch to repair a leaky pipe. the prosecutor has classified the fire as accidental and has not filed charges, but some tenants filed civil suits. this morning, we're hearing 911 calls from people who say they saw a burlington county woman burning her baby girl to death. take a listen. >> is there a child there? does she have a child with her? >> on fire! on the ground on the black top! >> the baby's on fire? >> yes! >> stay on the line. >> some of the callers told dispatchers they were holding the woman down until police arrived. prosecutors charged her with the murder of her newborn daughter. it happened two weeks ago. investigators say she doused the baby with a flammable liquid then set her on fire on the side of the road. in the background of that 911 call, she could be heard saying i'm sorry, over and over. a philadelphia city worker

is off the job after being accused of attacking a teenage girl on a trolly. the parks and recreation department suspended damon al ver. charging him with punching a 17-year-old girl in the face several times. this is cell phone video of the route 15 trolly. investigators say oliver was upset because the girl kept bumping into him with his backpack. mayor nutter is talking about investigation into an alleged sex scandal. the case involved alleged sexual activity at fire houses. confirms that the case began while he ran the department. he says a female paramedic made a complaint to the equal employment opportunity commission and he directed that complaint to the special investigation unit. >> it's significant, very complicated, a lot of details, and we're going to go through it as we would any other, you know, claim or series of allegations,

and obviously i'm very concerned about it but i'm not in -- i can't talk about it at this point. >> there was no word yet on when the city would finish its investigation of that complaint. well, five men have been cleared in a sex assault investigation at a college. refused to indictment the students from william patterson university. the group includes noah williams. prosecutors charge the group with kidnapping and assaulting a female student last november. the university is still investigating. a few snowflakes overnight, a dusting in some spots, a little more north and west. and we're still tracking a few scattered light showers this morning. but, they'll be gone by this afternoon. and in place of the showers, a cold blast, the winds pick up out of the northwest. that'll bring the temperatures way down.

not only this afternoon and tonight, but especially cold tomorrow. and then we're watching for some super bowl snow. not in arizona, no here during the game it'll start moving in late sunday night. right now, moving out the door 28 degrees in doylestown. it's above freezing not cold in philadelphia, not for this time of the year. and cape may at 37 degrees right now. clouds over the city doesn't look very snowy, and it isn't in the city. but there are a few snowflakes showing up on the radar, north and west very light snow moving through eastern burks county. meantime, in new jersey scattered light showers, a mix of a few flur flurries and a few rain drops, very light rain it's moving across delaware bay and into cape may county right now. won't last all day. this morning, it's a possibility that you'll see some snow and rain mixing at the shore. that's at 7:00. it should be drying up north and west fairly quickly. and the temperatures will climb a little bit by 11:00, by

noontime, we'll be in the middle 30s. that's as warm as it's going to go. look at the arrows lining up out of the north and west. the wind kicks in this afternoon. watch the temperatures cold. the cold air in place, it'll be below freezing at 4:00. middle 20s for allentown, 27 degrees in redding, and the numbers will continue falling by late this evening. we will be in the teens and the temperatures will still be falling. much colder air as we head into the weekend. got the extended future weather with a look at that potential snow during the super bowl when i come back in ten. >> sounds like perfect weather to see inside of the super bowl. 11 minutes after 4:00 now. time for an early check of the roadways on this friday morning. and jillian mele standing by with that. >> good morning, chris. majors in and out of center philadelphia. norris town, we are dealing with this activity. this gas leak main street and swede street.

lafayette street barbados street. no accidents or delays on the highways. 76 eastbound from the p.a. turnpike to the vine. going to take you 21 minutes right now. 13 minutes on 95 southbound. the blue route northbound from 95 to 76. is a 16-minute trip. chris? illegal activity off the field has police patrolling the super bowl. and this has nothing to do with deflated footballs by the way. next, the scheme that's targeting fans. and this -- the investigation into that explosion. plus a ruckus could be coming to the campus. the planned party has a proven track record of getting rowdy. and we're following this breaking news this morning in norristown where a gas leak filled several buildings with carbon monoxide. we're back with the latest on the investigation.

4:15 an emergency response in norris town. right now, we're live on the scene of this breaking news. the concern is carbon monoxide an odorless and sometimes deadly gas. gas that filled several businesses on main street in norris town this morning after an electrical fire. fire crews are on scene now trying to find the source of that leak and stop it. we're back with a live report from jesse gary in a moment. >> that explosion has rescuers in mexico city looking for survivors video shows the blast and aftermath at a maternity hospital. here's what happened a gas tanker was making a delivery to the hospital when a leak in the hose that was transporting the gas ignited. three people were killed, dozens hurt. and firefighters and the red cross are working to prevent fires like the one that killed

two people in south philadelphia yesterday. it's a story we brought to you as breaking news yesterday morning. crews handed out an installed smoke detectors yesterday on daily street. this comes after a man and woman were killed in a row home fire. the couple was using space heaters and candles to stay warm and didn't have working smoke detector detectors in the home. a man accused of killing a state trooper in an ambush shooting pled not guilty yesterday. he's facing murder terrorism and other charges in connection with the shooting outside the barracks last september. authorities spent nearly two months tracking him down in the poconos. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. montgomery county residents are fighting to save a local shopping destination. hoping to keep open the flower town farmers market. they wanted answers from local leaders. eviction notices were sent to 14 business owners at that market

last week. they were told to be out by summer. the reason still isn't clear. but many thinks it's to allow the expansion of at cvs willhich shares the building. they're worried about losing one of the few small businesses in the township. >> 100 people will lose their jobs and that's a huge impact besides the family in the community that shop there. >> now, neighbors tell us they plan to hold a rally at the farmers market next saturday hoping to gather more public support for saving it. 4:17 and we are on now to our super bowl xlix countdown. two days away 14 hours and about 12 minutes. can you believe it. it's almost here. the big game between the new england patriots and seattle seahawks this sunday right here on nbc 10. and you know there's been some legal action off the field leading up to the big game. federal agencies confiscated more than $19 million in fake nfl merchandise in what they call operation team player.

officials targeted international shipments of phony memorabilia entering the u.s. including hats jerseys and tickets. authorities have arrested dozens of people. operation team player will continue through next week. all right. back to the action on the field now. the excitement, of course, building ifbuild ing for the big game on sunday. keith jones has been covering this all week. and did i hear that you actually had to deal with a little inclement weather? is it raining in phoenix this morning? >> reporter: i wouldn't go as far to say inclement, but it has been raining heavily for more than nine hours straight so far. we're about two hours behind you. we drove in at about 1:00 a.m. and fans still at the bar. and we just heard some fans yelling from the street not too far from where we are right now. more fireworks that went off behind me. i want to step out of the way and show you what this rainy scene looks like. the rain, not holding fans back. we've been in contact with the "today" show crew. they should be arriving down on

coming to rowan university after the school won a recent twitter competition part of a youtube series which is known for creating videos of college students partying. the film crew says they'll be there in the next two weeks. in 2013 visited the university of delaware. and students swarmed the streets there in a near riot. the same party led administrators to suspend the rug by team for 5 years. they're looking into the matter. clouds are overhead the temperatures, not bad this morning. we are above freezing. for most locations, the exception north and west. the clouds will produce a few snowflakes and a couple of rain drops in some areas this morning. 34 degrees in philadelphia. that is 10 degrees warmer than it was yesterday at this time. just a little bit of a breeze blowing out of the west at 6 miles an hour. we're watching for a few snowflakes. there was a dusting overnight

for much of the area. mainly very light showers this morning. and the temperatures will be holding steady for most of the morning. low 30s right along the i-95 corridor. here, you can see the colder air north and west. right along the delaware river, 3 while doylestown is 28 degrees. it is also 28 in quakertown. cold, yes, but nowhere near as cold as yesterday. nowhere near as cold as what we'll see tomorrow. lots of clouds part of why it's warmer this morning with cloud cover, acts as a blanket, keeps the heat in during the day before. the brighter clouds, those are the ones producing a few showers in delaware and south jersey. scattered snow showers off to the north and west. these are snow showers that are popping up in cumberland county right now. as the atmosphere cools and snowflakes off to the north and west. speaking of the atmosphere cooling, it's this afternoon that the winds will kick in and the temperatures will be coming down during the afternoon hours. you'll really have to bundle up if you're heading out this

evening. and overnight tonight into tomorrow morning, the northwesterly winds will bring the temperatures way down by 3:00 in the morning, 15 degrees, that's without the windchill in philadelphia. and there's a potential for some very strong winds of gusting to 40 miles an hour overnight tonight and into tomorrow. and that will set the stage for potential snow come sunday night. got the 7-day forecast with the timing when i come back in the next half hour. >> all right, bill. let's set the stage for your friday morning drive to work. first alert traffic reporter jillian mele is watching the roads out there for us. any problems out there yet, jillian? >> the highways are clear. but the one problem is this gas leak where jesse gary is live in norris town. that's blocked off, take lafayette or barbados street. majors in the lehigh valley are quiet. this is what 78 is looking like. a few drivers out there. and as you can see, the drive times on 78 are pretty average right now, chris. >> concern is spreading in arizona ahead of super bowl

well tomorrow is the deadline to file claims over faulty ignition switches on older model general motors calls. they rejected calls from two u.s. senators this week to give claimants more time. as of last week, the company had received more than 3,000 claims 50 have been found eligible for compensation. as tens of thousands of people flock to arizona ahead of the super bowl on sunday there's a major health concern

about a growing measles outbreak. arizona health officials are calling on residents who have not been vaccinated by measles to do so now. so far, there are seven confirmed cases in that state and 1,000 more people may have been exposed. experts say those cases are tied to people who came into contact with one or of the 200 kids exposed to measles last week. well this story's always difficult to read in the midst of a cold winter here in the philadelphia area. you'll get an extra hour of sunshine if you vacation in cancun. the mexican state where cancun is located is changing its time zone from central to eastern standard time starting sunday. setting the clocks one hour ahead will give tourists more beach time in the afternoon sun. a little bit of a breeze blowing this morning, but it's nothing compared to the gusty wind that's heading our way later today. and riding in on that wind, very cold air.
