dreyer and sheinelle jones. we have al roker in phoenix. >> that's right. it is super bowl central. it's been raining off and on for the last three days. i mean they get over 300 days of sunshine guys. will they get sunshine for the super bowl? we will let you know coming up. it has not dampened the enthusiasm. >> there are so many more people out there for him than i get for a snowstorm. >> we will have super bowl coverage throughout the hour. we will begin with the top story. it will involve dylan wearing down parkas again. she is hiding. here we go again. many cities already crippled by the storm bracing for round two. some areas could see up to an additional foot of snow before it is said and done. dylan. >> it first starts with the

cold. if you have been outside, you know the cold is out there. temperatures are so cold especially when you factor in the windchill. we have temperatures in the teens and 20s. 2 below in syracuse. in new york city. it is 5 below. the cold air sets the stage for the next storm system moving in. here it is. you see snow moving through areas like northern kansas and southern nebraska. this is going to eventually turn into a snowstorm for chicago, indianapolis cleveland and eventually into new york city. this is where we have the winter storm warning. it is later in the forecast period and this is where we have the winter storm watch in blue. here is the timing. omaha, nebraska with snow. chicago, it moving in overnight into sunday morning. it spreads into buffalo and erie pennsylvania. and sunday we have the rain/snow line. if this is further north, not much of a storm for new york city. if it dips to the south, up to 10 or more inches for new york

city. things will change for the next couple of days. chicago could see a foot of snow. the pink is the best chance of seeing snow. southern new england and boston that area is still digging out from 2 feet of snow. we could have another foot of snow on top of that. >> we have hot tea before you head out. >> right back over there. dylan, thanks. despite rain this week as al mentioned, weather should hopefully not be an issue for the super bowl tomorrow. our team in arizona is covering the angles of the big game. including the efforts to avoid another deflate-gate. roger goodell faced reporters on friday about that. we have nbc's peter alexander with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: erica, good morning. this city is ready and so is the nfl. barely 36 hours until kickoff of super bowl. it hasis as much spectacle as sport.

and it has been a tough season for the commissioner. here is where things stand. both teams have handed over 54 footballs to be inspected and approved tomorrow before the game. those balls right now are safely in the hands of the league. on the eve of america's biggest sports event, several days of unusually wet weather in the desert hasn't dampened the excitement of fans. the league continues to deal with a storm of its own. deflate-gate which roger goodell said will be investigated fully. >> this is my responsibility to protect the integrity of the game. i represent 32 teams. all of us want to make sure the rules are followed. >> reporter: goodell acknowledged it has taken a toll. >> it has been a tough year on me personally. it has been a year of what i would say humility and learning. >> reporter: the league has promised more security for the game balls on sunday, the

any public health threats. keeping an eye on any spikes on urgent care centers. that is standard for any event like the super bowl but especially important given the outbreak. today, thousands of people arriving in phoenix for the country's most watched game during a closely watched measles outbreak. 1,000 people monitored in arizona after exposure to the virus. with california reporting 12 new cases last couple days there is concern. >> i would not take a 1-year-old to the super bowl or anywhere actually where there was an outbreak. >> reporter: unvaccinated people are almost certain to catch the virus if they come in contact with it. cdc says people shouldn't travel at risk. >> if do you have measles, you should stay home. >> reporter: arizona is one of 14 states seeing cases. most linked to disneyland in california.

uriah krueger's parents think he caught it from someone at the theme park. >> i had to be strong for him. holding him close to me. i'm crying. >> you see the implications of people getting the vaccine and aren't. >> reporter: if you have been immunized and want to head to phoenix, doctors say game on. the cdc says it would not expect a lot of people unvaccinated to congregate at the super bowl. kids too young for the vaccine are most at risk. you will not see a lot of infants. lester. >> hallie thanks. we have sheinelle following an issue at a tennessee high school. >> a high school students is suspected and accused of planting a sophisticated bomb in columbia, tennessee. the bomb was discovered in the

bathroom. the student saw the device and it was attached to a digital counter which was counting down. the bomb squad destroyed it and the student is facing charges. tense negotiations for the has hostages. isis wants return for the would-be suicide bomber in exchange for a japanese journalist and jordanian pilot. no word on the conditions of the hostages today. the record balloon flight. two-man team one american and russian, have flown longer and farther than anyone before. it will touch down in mexico later today. more than 6,000 miles and 140 hours in the air. serena williams defeated maria sharapova in straight sets in the australian open. this is her sixth australian open championship and 19th grand

celebrated tight end. he played in the last super bowl appearance by the patriots but this morning, he is behind bars on trial for murder. nbc's ron mott has more for us. >> reporter: erica, good morning. by any measure, aaron hernandez was on the way to greatness on the football field. prosecutors back in massachusetts say he was on the way to trouble, and implicated in not one, but two murders. >> second and a deuce. over the middle. touchdown, hernandez! >> reporter: at super bowl xlvi years ago, aaron hernandez helped the patriots build a lead. the one they would lose along with the game. now with his former teammates are preparing for another chance of glory, the former tight end's downfall is playing out in the massachusetts courtroom. >> the evidence will show that aaron hernandez is an innocent man. >> reporter: on trial for the murder of a friend 27-year-old

odin lloyd. >> they drove to a secluded isolated area in north attleboro. there he shot his friend. >> reporter: hernandez grabbed attention in the nfl when the patriots awarded him with a $40 million contract in 2012. the same year where he gunned down two at a nightclub. hernandez has pleaded not guilty to all charges. his lawyer saying prosecutors in the current trial ignored evidence and zeroed in on hernandez from the start. >> the shock value certainly in new england and the country is amazing. gangster in the huddle. >> reporter: the judge overseeing the trial says jurors can watch the super bowl tomorrow but hernandez is in prison and jurors are told to

out today, brittney. >> not really though we are going to see plenty of sunshine. temperatures will stay well below average. plus, we're dealing with the wind speeds and that's what's making it feel so cold out in combination with the cold air. the actual temperature in philadelphia, 15 degrees. feels like zero degrees. 10 degrees in pottstown but it feels like 1 below zero. in allentown, it feels like it's 3 degrees below zero. bundle up you have to head out. our temperatures will warm to 19 degrees by noon by 4:00 p.m. 23. it's still going to be very cold. our wind chills will be anywhere between 0 and 10 degrees. i am tracking snow by tomorrow afternoon and evening. new from overnight, 11 train cars derailed in south philadelphia. the csx cars went off the tracks just before 3:00 this morning at 11th and and patteson avenue. the train was carrying crude oil, although nothing was leaking and nobody was hurt.

helps veterans and military members pursue higher education. one is a member who left his dream behind to fulfill his brother's legacy. josh elliot has more. >> reporter: in 2006 ed woodward just five flights from graduating flight school. after a test flight in oregon he developed a blood clot in his brain. his recovery was an arduous one. but he insisted he would do anything to allow to fly. the air force said the risk was too great. >> that is when it i realized i lost and i was never for to get to fly again. >> reporter: suddenly without purpose, ed felt hopelessly lost until the day his grandfather had an idea. >> i said i don't know what to do. i don't know what i can do.

he looked at me and said finish what gene started. >> reporter: finish what gene started. that's a story that begins in the summer of 2000. on the day ed's twin brother gene finished his first year of medical school. ed and gene went out to celebrate. on the way home their vehicle was struck by a drunk driver going 120 miles per hour. >> we flipped a couple of times and spun. i couldn't get him out. i realized he was pinned. i felt so weak and helpless that day. that night. >> reporter: more than a decade after the crash, ed woodward was told he would never fly another mission in an f-15 but then he looked to his twin brother and found a new way to serve.

nbc 10 news starts now. >> right now on nbc 10 news today, super bowl weekend is officially here. and the fans have arrived in arizona. we will take you there and tell you how much they're shelling out to get in on the action. that's coming up in a live report. you may want to head to arizona when you see today's forecast i hate to tell you, bitter cold temperatures with wind chills below zero in some areas. tomorrow, wet weather is in the forecast. welcome to nbc 10 news today. i'm rosemary connors. it's just before 8:00 on this saturday. let's get to that weekend weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. the best way to describe the weather outside today is bone chilling. >> absolutely. we are going to see bitter cold conditions as we start off your saturday morning. and even as we head into the afternoon, it doesn't get that much better with temperatures pushing into the mid-20s as our

daytime highs. there's a live look outside now. looks nice with plenty of sunshine. when you step outside you'll feel the cold. 15 degrees in philadelphia but the feels like temperature is 2 below zero. it's 3 below in wilmington, 15 is the actual temperature, 16 degrees in millville and 18 in wildwood. part of the reqs speeds are gusting, up to 20 30 miles an hour. the wind speeds will subside as we head into the rest of the afternoon. temperatures will stay at 23 degrees by 4:00 p.m. by 8:00 p.m. 22. with the wind chill it will feel anywhere between 0 and 10 degrees throughout most of today. that's on your saturday. as we head into tomorrow there's a storm system that will bring us snow and rain. it's heading our way sunday afternoon, heading into the the overnight hours pushing into monday morning. i'll go over the details in what you can expect in my full forecast. 11 train cars derailed in south philadelphia overnight. the csx cars went off the tracks just before
