we are following some breaking stories this morning. first a live picture from skyforce 10. in montgomery county flames are still shooting through the roof. some people are hurt and part of the building has collapsed. more on that in a moment. a deadly plane crash in taiwan as this breathtaking video shows the plane going down. we'll have an update on rescue efforts there. more than ten people killed in the plane crash. and we are on the scene in trenton that left an injured police officer. we have a lot to get to. good morning this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm chris cato. another cool start today, but today is the promised warm up. meteorologist bill henley is

standing by with that. it is one of two one-day warm-ups. it will be warmer this afternoon. right now it's cold enough for snow and we are watching the radar for snowflakes. there's a chance to see some in the pocano mountains. a better chance of showers in the pocano mountains. but we have a few snowflakes moving into chester county. more impressive is what is moving through portions of northeast pennsylvania. just some light snow showers for the pocano mountains and less likely the farther south, too. but everybody is cold this morning. 24 degrees in philadelphia. also the teens north and west but we'll get some sunshine. so a nice warm up 38 degrees and climbing at lunchtime. we'll go through the forecast hour by hour when i come back. first to jillian mele. so far the majors are looking good. this is a live look of 76 near girard avenue. no accidents or delays to report, but in norristown we have a really big fire in this

area on swede street between chestnut street and marshall street. this is blocked off. you have blocks surrounding the intersection completely blocked off because of the heavy response. i'm trying to find the best alternate routes. it's such a large scene out there. working on getting the alternate routes for you, and i'll have some in a minute. chris? breaking news overnight, skyforce 10 was first on the scene over this four-alarm apartment fire in montgomery county. this fire battle has been going on for a couple hours is still not over. flames are showing there with heavy, black smoke. several people were injured is what we know at this point. others were forced out to the cold. and part of the building has collapsed. the fire broke out at 12:45 this morning on swede street. that's right there as jillian just showed us in the heart of norristown. a lot of businesses and buildings around this apartment fire. nbc 10's jesse gary is live to

tweet us what happened here. jesse? >> reporter: this apartment building is about five stories as you see the smoke rising in the back of the building. there's a partial collapse. the fire marshall says they have set up a collapse zone around the back wall as they try to make their way back there, but you can see where the flames are located right now in the back portion of the building. two or three people were taken to area hospitals from here. we do not have an injury update on that yet. 21 people were forced out and are sheltering inside a septa bus. the red cross is opening norristown high school as a temporary shelter right now. we'll try to get with the norristown chief in just a bit to get more information and have an update coming up in 30 minutes. jesse gary "nbc 10 news".." now to more breaking news. this from mercer county.

a trenton police officer barely escaped serious injury after being hit by a car. that car being driven by a gunshot victim. nbc 10's katy zachry is live with more in trenton for us. lay it out for us. >> reporter: take a look at the scene here at the corner of walnut avenue and chestnut avenue. investigators with the prosecutors office say a trenton police officer as you said was hit by a car earlier this morning. now the driver and the car were eventually found in hamilton township. and we're hearing the driver is in police custody. we are also hearing like you said the driver was shot but it's not confirmed at this time who shot him. as far as the officer's injury who was hit by a car, we understand he's at a local hospital treated for minor injuries. i'm trying to get more information right now as you see this is a developing scene with a number of investigators out here trying to get to the bottom of what happened. as soon as i have more information, we'll bring it to you. reporting live in trenton, katy

zachry "nbc 10 news." and the third breaking story this morning takes us to taiwan where rescue crews are searching a river. you can see this picture here searching a river for survivors of a plane crash. they are sitting on the plane there. there were 58 people on board this plane when it went down shortly after takeoff. and we have provided video breathtaking to watch. tracy davidson is monitoring the rescue reports out of taiwan. tracy, this video is remarkable of the plane going down. >> reporter: you're right, it is incredible. it was captured on the dash cam of drivers on the roadway at the time. take a look at what we're talking about. you can see the plane midair and it clips a bridge of the freeway before plunging into the river. the transasia airway plane lost contact with air traffic control two minutes later. right now as you show that video, the plane is floating in the river. here's what we know about the people on board, 28 people were

pulled from the water so far. three of them were dead when pulled from the water. ten others died on the way to the hospital. so the death toll now is at 13. right now rescue crews are searching for other victims. the transasia airways plane is nine months old and was last inspected on january 26 in fact. this comes six months after another transasia plane crashed while attempting to land on an island off taiwan's coast. 48 people were killed in that crash in july. now air airline officials are not talking about what caused this as they focus on trying to get to the victims and survivors to local hospitals. we'll continue to monitor any briefing that the airline has. live in the digital operations center tracy davidson "nbc 10 news." all right. 4:06 now. we have new information on a deadly train crash near new york city. seven people now confirmed dead after a commuter train crashed into an suv at a crossing. this happened last night on the

metro north line in valhalla 20 miles north of new york city. the train slammed into a general cherokee. the jeep and the front of the train caught fire and witnesses say the railway crossing gates came down on top of the suv, which for some reason had stopped on the tracks. one passenger said he and hundreds of others scrambled to safety. >> a number of us were smelling fumes from the car, fuel and we said, we need to get out. the fire was starting to spread back so the second car it did finally ignite. >> the driver of the jeep and six passengers on the trains were killed. several others were hurt. the impact was so powerful the electrified third rail came up to pierce the train. that crash happened on the scene with commuter line involved in the deadly commuter line in the bronx in 2013. four people were killed and dozens injured. investigators determined that the engineer fell asleep and the train was going too fast around

a curve. new from overnight, an armed robber targeted a bar in philadelphia. police say a masked man walked into bottoms up at fifth and wyoming around 11:30 last night, pointed a gun at the people inside and demanded money. no one was hurt. investigators are still looking for the robber. skyforce 10 was covering breaking news across the area late last night. we begin in new castle county where police are investigating a car that hit a man. this was the scene on route 1 and route 40 at 8:00 last night. the car then stopped. we just checked within the past hour and the victim is still in critical condition. no word of charges being filed. and a transformer caught fire in the winfield section of philadelphia overnight. it happened at 57th and lebanon avenue. the transformer fell off the utility pole and came crashing down near a car. close call there. the vehicle did have minor damage. nobody was injured. there was a small tower outage in the area. and we have an update on a water main break in atlantic

county. nbc 10 was on west main street in galloway township as crews were trying to be prepared. some homes were without water for several hours but now the update this morning is that the service has been restored. cold enough this morning for a few light snow flurries. in the pocano mountains we are watching for a shower this morning, but we'll see sunshine and a one day warm-up in the 40s this afternoon. cold returns tomorrow and there's a chance to see light snow coming through tomorrow morning. heading out right now, it's cold in reading 17 degrees. the clouds over reading. mostly cloudy in philadelphia 24 degrees and clear in cape may at 28 degrees. there's a clear view across the delaware. no sign of any problems this morning. i don't expect any problems this morning but we could see a few showers near the pocano

mountains. it's just to start with they won't last. 10:00 this morning, we'll enjoy sunshine. right at freezing at 10:00 but look at the warm up the upper 30s near lunchtime and into the lower 40s for philadelphia this afternoon. 44 degrees, that's at 2:00 in dover. and the 40s extend for reading and lancaster. a nice turn-around for today. enjoy it today. partly sunny skies and enough sunshine to warm us into the 40s this afternoon. the southwesterly winds won't be terribly strong but enough to boost our temperatures today. but it does turn colder tomorrow. and yes, a little bit of snow along the way. we have the extended future weather to show you what to expect and when when i come back in ten. jillian mele the big focus this morning is the situation around what we're seeing here that apartment fire in norristown, right? >> yes, this is just a couple blocks from the courthouse so this portion of norristown gets busy later in the morning. so this is something we'll continue to follow for you.

you can see just how great this firefighting effort is. we have blocks around this intersection blocked off. and swede street is blocked off near chestnut and marshall street. elm street or main street both of them are pretty far back from the main intersection where everything is blocked off. 202 should be okay in that area. i haven't heard of any closures there, but if i do i will be sure to pass it along. chris? someone's idea of fun almost cost a mainline boy his life. >> he could have murdered a child like me. >> a bullet came through the boy's bedroom wall from the outside. and wait until you hear what the shooter was actually aiming at. plus freezing pipes inside your home could add up to thousands of dollars in damage. next, what simple steps you can take to keep this from happening.

4:14. we are following breaking news of an apartment fire in morristown. flames are still coming from the roof. several people were injured in this fire. a part of one of the buildings collapsed and several people evacuated. more than 20 people were forced out of their homes. they are being sheltered right now in a septa bus and will later be moved to norristown high school to stay out of the cold. this is a live picture here. you can see the firefight is still underway with heavy smoke coming from the building there. we'll have a live report from jesse gary coming up at 4:30. also breaking a trenton police officer narrowly escaped serious injury this morning. he was hit by a car but his injuries are not serious. investigators tell us the car

hit him because the driver of the car had been shot. the officer was standing outside his cruiser at 1:30 this morning when the car came along. here's a live picture of the scene here. the car came along and clipped the officer. again, the officer's injuries not serious. the driver had been shot. we're working to find out the driver's condition. also fog localing developments in this breathtaking video here, a deadly plane crash in taiwan. you can see this commuter plane, a transasia airways plane cart wheeling over a freeway bridge clipping the side of the bridge before crashing into the river. absolutely amazing. this is a live picture of the rescue efforts well underway in the river there. this is the scene. and in the last 15 minutes, we have confirmed 13 people dead. there are 15 survivors, which is remarkable. and 30 people still reported missing. a report out of taiwan said the plane's wing also hit a taxi as it clipped that freeway bridge there injuring the taxi driver.

jordan executed two al qaeda prisoners in retaliation for the jordanian prisoner killed by isis. one was this woman captured after her suicide vest failed to go off in jordan. isis demanded her release in exchange for a japanese journalist who they killed over the weekend. and yesterday isis released video showing this jordanian pilot being burned alive inside that cage. jordan officials were considering a prisoner swap but wanted proof the pilot was still alive. in retaliation for his murder, jordan also executed a top aid for the former leader of al qaeda in iraq. this morning police are looking for the person who fired a bullet that just missed a boy sleeping inside his mainline home. 12-year-old zach marino is okay but it's pretty amazing as a stray bullet came through his wall in delaware county last week. investigators say the shot came from a handgun that someone fired at that road sign.

zach's mother told us he was sleeping just 5 feet from where the bullet entered the wall. >> i suppose anywhere in the house isn't a great thing, but to see it come into your bedroom where you're asleep you have no idea what is going on. it's unnerving. >> police are asking anyone who saw anything suspicious near bryn mawr road last thursday morning to give them a call. 4:17 now. happening today, the delaware county couple who had theirattacked a baby will be in court. they mauleded a 1 month girl who was strapped inside her car seat last week. family services is taking care of four other children.

and alan briscoe was killed during an argument on january 2012. then last february a man was shot to death at a camden home. now price is the son of briscoe's widow, so she lost her husband and son two years apart. she organized a rally tonight in berkeley heights at 7:30. officers cited two people last night during a march protesting a police shooting. >> no justice, no peace! >> nbc 10 was there as a crowd of 50 people marched from the place where jermaine reid was shot to death marching to city hall. the protesters compare what happened to reid to the high-profile cases of michael brown and eric garner. now this is dash cam video from that shooting on december 30th showing the moments before two officers shot reid to death during a traffic stop. nbc 10 found out yesterday that reid had a pending lawsuit

against cumberland county at the time of his death. in that suit he claims he was assaulted by corrections officers at the county jail in 2009. >> he was beaten up while he was in jail. because he suffered a fractured eye socket and from talking to his wife he had some very sensitive damages. >> reid served prison time for shooting two state troopers many years ago. protesterses were frustrated because they didn't get to be at the city council meeting last night as the council president promised to set up a meeting to address their concerns. we're watching the skies for a few flurries. it's certainly cold enough for snow, but so far dry in center city. the temperature has come down to 24 degrees. not a lot of wind. in fact most of the area is calm and just a light breeze in philadelphia international. the pocano mountains are back to making snow but they will probably see a few scattered

light snow showers today. and then there's a chance to get light snow showers again tomorrow. teens for pottstown, doylestown trenton, right along the i-95 corridor in chester county, 19 degrees in westchester. glenmoore, another cold start at 12. phoenixville, 17. right back to the same territory this morning. cold enough for a few snowflakes. you may see flurries with the clouds coming through, but they will keep going and we'll get some sunshine. a nice warm up today. but come tomorrow, another round of clouds. these spreading snow already into the midwest by later this morning. and into our area by first thing tomorrow morning early in the morning we'll see scattered snow showers in the lehigh valley and the pocanos. but as you can see not very exciting. we won't get worked up over a dusting in philadelphia. half an inch possible as this

comes through north and west. maybe a little more in the mountains, that's tomorrow. for today, might see a flurry but then the skies turn partly sunny. we'll be in the 40s today, but don't get used to it. the seven-day forecast with the turnaround when i come back in the next half hour. thank you for the warning, bill. 4:21 and time for a check on the traffic with jillian mele. you are getting people around the apartment fire in norristown. >> we continue to get more information. that's how it will be throughout the morning because it's a heavy response out there. in norristown the main closure is going to impact a lot of people is swede street blocked near oak street and airy street. this is going to be a problem for drivers in the morning because it's a couple blocks from the courthouse in the area. that gets very congested and busy. take de kalb street and main street and marshall street to get around it. stick to the bigger roads in that area because that will be your best bet. a lot of the side streets around the closure including marshall street chestnut oak airy

street, there are specific closures on those roads as well as we have a lot of response out there. keep that in mind. we'll keep you updated as the closures expand in this area. this is a live look at lehigh valley, interstate 78 at lehigh street, you can see both directions here, everything is quiet. 4:22. this bitter cold weather we're having is not just tough on people but tough on your house, too. pipes in your home can freeze in this weather, but there are some ways to prevent that. aqua america recommends opening cabinet that is contain pipes so the heat gets to them. and also keep a small stream of water running. and you can put some ventilation around the pipes. but what if the pipes still rupture? >> you can find the shut-off valve if you know where it is. the most important thing is to know where the water line comes in the house, where the meter is and where the controlled valves are. >> and experts say it is not just the pipes in your home that can freeze but the connector running from your house to the
