subject. i walked away so impressed with his openness his honesty, his resilience. >> we want to get to the top story first. >> we do that's the investigation into the deadly commuter train in new york as the train line gets back up and running this morning. nbc's tom costello is at west chester medical center. they are treating the injured there. good morning to you. >> reporter: the injuries include burn open laceration fractures. at crash scene, itself investigators are in the very early stages of trying to determine what caused this accident. it took nearly 24 hours for crews to remove the suv had that had been virtually impaled on the front of a metro north commuter train. they say the driver may have been caught on the tracks in a back-up tuesday night. right behind her in traffic, rick hoeg who saw her get out of the car after the crossing arm came down on the suv. she looked at me i gestured her

to come back. i backed up again further to indicate there would be plenty of room to back up. she turned walked and gets back in the car. >> reporter: instead of backing up she pulled forward, right into the path of an oncoming train. in a massive fireball the train carried the suv a thousand feet down the tracks yanking the electricified third rail out of the ground and driving it like a spike through the first train car and into the second. already, ntsb investigators recovered the data recorder. >> two big questions, why was the car on the train tracks and what caused this accident to be failed. >> reporter: ellen brody was married with three daughters. she worked at a monita jewelry store. >> she was the most warm person. she was kind. she was a great mom. >> reporter: her husband alan posting on facebook thank you

times. now, temperatures are plunging once again across the eastern half of the country. yet another winter storm is targeting tensele of millions from north dakota to maine. dylan dwyer is in frigid chicago. >> reporter: good morning, we are here at the foem home of the walks. one of 500 dunking grounds for snow here in chicago. which is exactly what it sounds. snow is piled up in the truck and dumped into places like this. we are here because that arctic air has settled into the mid-west. here in chicago and across the mid-west temperatures are at zero with colder wind chills. all of this snow will remain frozen in place, from chicago into boston. in chicago, itself more than 600 vehicles and a piece of equipment have been deployed to clean up the snow after 20-plus inches of snow fell here just the other day with an election in three weeks, they are doing everything they can to make sure even the side streets through the neighborhoods are cleared.

now, we are looking at the cold air to continue to spread to the northeast. in fact by tomorrow morning, across new england. that's when the coldest air will affect areas like boston all the way down into new york city and washington, d.c. but on the flipside of the cold back through the plains in kansas nebraska up in the south dakotas, starting tomorrow temperatures will be in the 60s and 70s. volunteering i will be happy to go out there if you want to. unfortunately, none of that warm air is spreading east. al happy weather person's day. >> it's weather person day the anniversary of our first meteorologist john jeffrey. here's the deal. we got this arctic front that will open up the door to this cold air from portland all the way to new york. another one-to-two inches possible today. here's that ridge dylan was talking about. those warms temperatures awfully good. 71 in los angeles, albuquerque 64. right now buffalo 9.

the fbi, an investigation is under way this morning into what is being called a very sophisticated cyber attack on the health insurance anthem. the target a database containing some 80 million records. 350e9 williams the investigative correspondent. good morning. >> reporter: they say it doesn't appear credit card information is compromised but hackers accessed other personal information in what it calls a sophisticated attack. the hackers got access to names, social security numbers and birth dates and e-mails and street addresses and employment information, including income data. the company says the information covered some customers in anthem employees who are covered now or were in the past. anthem has customers in 16 states including new york and california t. company says the intrusion was discovered last week. it says so far there is no sign

any of this information is showing up on sites that posts stolen hacker data. anthem says it's likely the records of tens of millions of people were accessed in the hack attack. it is now in the process of contacting its customers. matt savannah. >> pete williams in washington thank you very much. the new fallout of the murder of the jordanian fighter pilot by isis. jordan's king is vowing to destroy the terror group. u.s. lawmakers, some are pushing the white house to give them more of the help he needs. andrea mitchell is the chief foreign affairs correspondent and has been following all of this. andrea good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. today king abdullah is paying his condolences to the families in their village south of the capital. they say they are lining up more support for jordan. they say isis has messed with the wrong king. the video of him being burned alive. >> they say they are, but they

passengers as the death toll has climbed now to over 30. nbc's ian williams has the latest now on the search. >> reporter: rescue efforts continued today, plucking mangled wreckage from the river t. search hampered by strong tides and murky waters. "it's a difficult mission," said the diveer. while relatives attempted a simple religious ceremony on the river bank. from hills bed, a survivor said he felt there was a problem as soon as the plane took off. he told the person next to him, they should hold on to their seats and cover their heads t. 72-year-old said the plane went down the minute he stopped talking t. last moments were dramatically captured by the dash cams of passing cars. the plane clipping an elt vatd roadway before cart wheeling into the river below, where these new pictures capture the horror of a survivor at a window as the water filled the cabin. officials today confirm the

recording of the pilots distress call soon after takeoff. engine flameout he said suggesting possible engine trouble. >> that seems to be confirmed. the pictures show the left propeler at a standstill as the plane careened towards the river. the engine was among the debris pulled from the water today while the black box also has been recovered. both of which should enable investigators to come to a speedy conclusion as to what caused this horrific crash. ian williams nbc news beijing. secretary of state john kerry is in ukraine today to show support for the embattled government. this as the obama administration wavesle sending arms to kiev to fight separatists. kerry brought with him more than $16 million in u.s. humanitarian aid and the lethal weaponry ukrainian leaders say they desperately need to defend

themselves. police are searching for two teenagers shot outside a maryland high school while a basketball game was going on pence. witnesses say people started running and the school was evacuated. the wounded teens were brought to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. and if you had find your kids misbehaving lately an atlanta area barber says he has found a way to cut it out. russell frederick is giving free haircuts. he calls it is benjamin button special. the idea is to shave the tops of their heads to make them look like balding old men. frederick says he gave cut to his own son for getting bad grades apparently it worked. he saw immediate results. he says interests in the haircut has skyrocketed. so far, though only one person has gone through with it. >> you put glasses on that kid, that's me. >> but there is a lot of discussion about things when you shame a child.

. it's 7:30 on a thursday morning, the 5th day of february 2013. it's kind of cold here in new york city and across a large portion of the east coast. it will get colder by tonight. temperatures really getting there. >> double digits. we will take a look at what's making headlines, federal investigators are reviewing data recorders from a commuter train on the tracks north of new york city. six people were killed in that crash, including the car's driver, a 49-year-old mother of three. the pilot of that transasia plane that crashed into the river in taiwan issued a distress call just moments before that accident saying the plane was experiencing engine flameout. more than 30 people died in that crash. and the fbi is investigating
