>> this was a gut crunch. bob simon admired by those who only knew his work. some say he may have been commuting home last night. a tragic end to the life devoted to covering some of the most important stories for the past 50 years. this morning fans and loved ones are paying tribute to beloved "cbs news"man bob simon. >> i'm bob simon. >> according to police, a town car simon was riding in hit another car, stopped at a red light on manhattan's west side highway, spinning into the center divider. both simon and the driver lad to be cut out of the car. simon was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. a teary-eyed scot pelley reported the news of simon's death on wednesday night. >> our "60 minutes" colleague bob simon was killed this evening. >> reporter: anderson cooper who worked with simon at "60 minutes" called same anwarior poet. >> bob was over the last five decades, one of the best, in my

opinion, the best at telling a story, writing a story and making it simply unforgettable. >> reporter: bob simon was a native new york a scholar and a fixture on "cbs news" for a century. simon and his team were captured by iraqi forces while reporting during the gulf war in 1991 and held for 40 days. >> this is a story that could have ended another way but it's had a happy ending. >> reporter: over the course of his career simon received a number of honors including 27 emmys. his latest report airing on "60 minutes" just this past sunday. overnight, fans and colleagues sharing their grief online. katie couric tweeting heartbreaking news about sob simon of "60 minutes" a brilliant reporter someone i admired deeply. late night host seth myers tweeting gutted to hear the news about bob simon. an absolute master of his craft.

bob simon was 73-years-old. >> simon was survived by his wife francois and daughter tanya, a producer at "60 minutes" herself. the long-time executive producer called bob same an reporter's reporter and pointing to the obvious added tragedy that he's survived so much out in the field only to lose his life on the west side highway in manhattan. >> if you were walking by a tv and you saw him start to introduce a story, you sat down and got comfortable because you knew it was going to be perfectly told. >> yeah he was a master at it for sure. >> willie thank you so much. let's go to washington where congress is debating president obama's formal request to authorize u.s. military force in the war against isis. we are learning more about a request to save the life of kayla mueller while she was being held captive by the terror group. nbc national correspondent peter alexander has all the white house information. >> reporter: we will have that

in a moment. first for a little context here. this is the first time in more than a decade congress is reconsidering the extent of the president's powers to target terrorists. president obama warned yesterday if left unchecked, isis could threaten the u.s. homeland as well as americans abroad. resolve from the president as the nation collectively mourns the death of 26-year-old american aide worker kayla mueller. >> we are going to degrade and ultimately destroy this terrorist group. >> reporter: and few revelations this morning. nbc news andrea mitchell claims they asked the family for another prisoner in exchange for kayla. the white house didn't approve the trade. innics kayla's syrian boyfriend omar who was with her when she was captured in 2013 later tried to kes rescue kayla, claiming he was her husband. >> that attempt failed. now, president obama is pushing congress for the power he insists he needs to defeat isis.

afghanistan, but we're determined to get the job done with our military and coalition part first. >> reporter: at the urging of kayla's family the white house denied reports that kayla was married off to an isis sxhander during her time in captivity. officials here in a rare statement said those reports are quote speculative and unproven at this time. matt savannah. >> peter alexander at the white house, thank you. police in north carolina are investigating the motives of the murders of three young muslims in chapel hill. were they prig i triggered over hate or parking spaces? >> reporter: good morning, matt the people at this condo complex have a huge outpouring of grief t. victims were highly regard and their murders seem so senseless at the university of north carolina an emotional vigil wednesday night. a huge crowd of mourners remembering the three young

lives cut short. the victims were all muslims raised in america. 23-year-old deah barhararaar bara /*akat. and her disastersister razan. >> 46-year-old craig stephen hicks, a neighbor of the barakats turned himself into police and was charged with first degree murder. the father insists the killings were religiously motivated. >> we are hoping to get justice here but in anyway you look at it it's just a hate crime. >> reporter: but police and the suspect's wife say the murders were sparked by a dispute over a

parking space at the condo. >> i can't say with my absolute belief that this incident had nothing to do we are lidgegion or faith. -- religion or faith. >> reporter: that investigation into that continues. >> mark potter thank you. let's turn to natalie. a major announcement from the russian president this morning. >> probably a break through after marathon talks. prugs president vladimir putin says ukrainian troops and separatist versus agreed to a cease-fire. fill neely is in london with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie natalie, after 16 hours of negotiation tarp called extremely difficult, there is a deal and doubts about it. the deal seems unlikely t. key points are a cease-fire from sunday morning, heavy weapons to

be pulled out of eastern ukraine in two weeks and a commitment no more than that for all foreign troops to be withdrawn. however, germany warning this morning that this is not a comprehensive solution. it's not a break through. and there is a lot of work still to be done. there are issues unresolved for example, how exactly is ukraine to get control again of its international border and remember this is a rehashed version of a deal six months ago that wasn't worth the paper it was written on and collapsed very quickly. so no one also is really sure. is this enough for vladimir putin? what is his end game? so there is a deal many thought would be unlikely t. big question is will it stick? >> it certainly is the big question. bill neely in london thank you. now to a story we have been following for three years t. captain of the cruiseship that crashed and killed 32 people sentenced to 16 years in prison. but some families of the victims say that is not enough.

nbc's katie kir is in italy with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, he won't have to go to prison immediately. he will be able to stay free throughout his appeals process. that can take more years. now this trial from the start was surreal to say the least, held pence a local courtroom, a local theater instead of a courtroom t. child theatrics pence only matching the venue. standing on the stage of a local theater a. panel of three judges literally held the high ground as they delivered the captain's fate. 16 years in prison ten for multiple counts of manslaughter five for causing a ship wreck and one for abandoning ship in the plush red velvet seats below the prosecution and defense but no skatino. the captain who broke down during a hastily thrown together

final plea to court was a no-show for sentencing. the concordia western aground and capsized in january, 2012 killing 32 people. it took two years for salvageers to upright and haul away the ghostly cruiseliner and two-thirds of that time for the trial of the man at its helm. >> i remember moments of it. they come to me in flashes. >> survivors were not satisfied. >> somebody that is sorry doesn't leave the ship and go look for dry socks while people are dying on the ship. >> two minutes of his small life for asking me how i feel? >> reporter: ultimately skatino was a unconvincing to his judges as he was to his passengers. now, skatino maintained from the start he actually fell into the lifeboat when the ship suddenly lifted to its side.

now he'll be fined 30,000 euros for each of the passengers that sued. well into the millions. as for the theater, authorities say they were trying to accommodate what they thought would be record crowds. it remained largely empty throughout natalie. >> a strange venue. thank you. officials in northern california are warning train commuters that they may have been exposed to the measles. public health officials say someone was diagnosed with the disease after riding bay area rapid transit three days last week. up to 50,000 people may have been exposed. the highly contagious virus has affected more than 100 people in california since december afternoon. a dramatic police chase in dallas. police had been chasing the robbery suspect when he tried to squeeze between two vehicles be you the karzai lently rammed into them. a mother and her boyfriend jumped outs of one of those vehicles ran over to the car and roughed up the suspect t.

who shot and killed the so-called "american sniper" chris kyle. jacob rascone is if texas. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt good morning to you t. courtroom and overflow areas fell silent as the first day of testimony brought us back to that crime scene. as we got our first look at what american sniper chris kyle thought about the men who killed him right before it happened. taya kyle fought back tears almost immediately after taking the stand. the widow of american sniper chris kyle war dog tags around her neck clutching them at times, looking skyward at others. describing the last time she saw her husband alive, she said quote, we said we loved each other and gave each other a kiss and a hug like we always did. the movie "american sniper" talks about kyle coping with post-traunl r traumatic stress. he took a gun trip many times

with many struggling veterans. that day they took former manner eddie ray routh. on the way, he quoted littlefield, this dude is straight up nuts littlefield wrote he's right behind you, watch my back. taya called her husband before he died. she said i could tell something was up. he was just quiet t. defense attorney. >> when he took their lives, he was in the grip of a psychosis. >> warren told a jury in that moment routh feared for his life. >> that he had to take their lives because in his psychosis, he was thinking they were going to take his. >> reporter: district attorney alan nash. >> he admits that he murdered these two men, that he used drugs and alcohol that morning, and that he knew what he was doing was wrong. >> reporter: nash said routh shot kyle and littlefield in the

back in the face and elsewhere. a total of 13 rounds using two handguns. also among the first witnesses, littlefield's mother who told the jury, she was testifying on what would have been her son's 38th birthday. we also heard from first responders including a gun range employee who was with a family who quote wanted to meet chris kyle when he found the bodies. expect to hear more testimony from first responders today, maybe even a texas ranger who took routh's confession and apparent admission that he quote knew what he was doing was wrong. matt. >> jacob rascone, thank you very much. lisa bloom is a "today" legal analyst. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> let's go with there text okay. chris kyle sandy text to littlefield in that car on the way to the gun range, eddie routh was in the back seat. at one point he sends a text that says routh is quote straight up nuts littlefield responds saying he agree, watch

my six, a military term for watch my back. these guys aren't doctors but does that bolster the defense claim that eddie routh was insane at the time of this crime? >> well it certainly helps, it doesn't get the defence all the way there. it shows he had a mental disease or defect the first part of the test that was obvious to lay people. the defense still has to show, though he didn't know the difference between right or wrong. >> then taya kyle takes the stand yesterday. she was very emotional talking about chris' heroics, his life as a family man t. last time she saw him alive. what impact did she have on the jury? >> well listen the jurors are human beings. we have a beautiful young grieving widow, not only does that humanize the victims here. it creates sympathy for them. i think that certainly has to have an impact. >> during cross examination, both daya and chad littlefield's mother were questioned about

"60 minutes" correspondent bob simon who died last night in a crash in new york city in which a car he was a passenger hit another car at a traffic light. remembered as a giant in brad coster journalism and a master at his craft. bob simon reported for "cbs news" for half a century. during the 1991 gulf war he was captured and held for 41 days. bob simon was 73. also some sad news about a former member of the nbc family long-time correspondent ned holt whose reports were seen here for years on "today" has died in boston. he reported on stories from around the world based in asia for many years. he was instrumental in the iraq war and kidnapped and held for several days there. ned spent the last few years working for the international rescue committee as well as a u.n. group working for refugees. a good man and dedicated reporter. our hearts of course go out to

the radar showing it moving from the west now into chester, montgomery and upper bucks county. that's light snowfall for reading, allentown and into the pocono mountains. it's not going to last all day. temperatures have been coming up. 34 in northeast philadelphia but it is 28 degrees in allentown with just a coating in some spots right now. the forecast is calling for occasional snow showers. the temperatures peak in the upper 30s and low 40s and start dropping this afternoon. happening today prultosecutors will be calling more witnesses in the misconduct trial of a gloucester police officer. the officer claims moriarty was driving drunk. the case was thrown out amid claims the officer falsified reports. moriarty believes he was targeted by political opponents. the fire marshal is looking into the cause of a house fire that broke out around 1:00 this morning on princeton avenue. despite initial reports of peach el being trapped inside,

york city t. car he was in clipped another, a0parent lotly, it spun out of control and hit the center divider. a lot of people reflecting on his nearly half century as a great journalist. he reported from some of the dangerous places in the world. he was in one of the last helicopters in the vietnam war. he famously was captured by iraqi forces in 1991 during the first gulf war. he was held there for 40 days. he says he was tortured bodyen got out of there. he won 27 emmys over the course of all that reporting. "60 minutes" executive producer put out a statement last night in part it is such a tragedy because we lost him in a car tragedy. this guy was the quintessential foreign correspondent. he'd go anywhere do anything nowhere was too dangerous and a great writer and a great storyteller. a guy a lot of us look up to in this business. >> this past weekend on his

piece of the ave duvernay and the "selma" march. he has a piece this weekend. >> he was working on sunday. he was working with his daughter on that. our thoughts are with his daughter as well who works at "60 minutes." >> another sad bit of news long-time nbc correspondent ned holt passed away. he had a massive stroke and passed away in boston. he was i think on the cape in nantucket and airlifted to boston. he passed at 56. >> also such a great journalist. i remember he was, of course reported out of iraq as well during the war. so a great journalist as well. >> condolences to both families this morning. all right. on a different note. we are finally starting to hear more from amy pascal. of course you may remember she was a former sony executive speaking out for the first time since she stepped down or as she said she was actually fired after that hacking scandal. she talked to tina brown at the
