friday is off to a frigid start. these flags are showing us why we feel below zero across the area this morning. and more dangerous cold is on the way for the weekend. good morning this is "nbc 10 news today" on this friday. we put the first alert in effect today because of the bitter cold and dangerous temperatures. and we also need to mention there are two school closings so far this morning. we'll continue to monitor that. and you can also find the list of school closings through the "nbc 10 news" app. we'll begin with meteorologist bill henley. you told us the extreme temperatures were coming and temperatures really dropped overnight. the temperatures have plummeted and the wind gusts are

killer this morning, gusts near 43-mile-an-hour this morning and still going. a strong northwesterly wind bringing in the cold air. the pocano mountains, that's the view from camelback this morning where the numbers right now are below zero. the actual temperature is 3 below zero. currently 12 in allentown. factor in the wind it is colder feeling. trenton, feels like 12 below zero. 9 below in wilmington. and 6 below in philadelphia. cold all around. there you can see the wind blowing the flags outside the nbc 10 studios. if you find shelter from the wind, it will help. but it will still be cold at 7:00 10 degrees. 13 at 9:00. the temperatures will be climbing a bit with winds coming down at noontime but it will feel like the single digits for much of the late morning and early afternoon. we'll go through it hour by hour, neighborhood by neighborhood, with our future weather when i'm back to show

advertise out there? >> reporter: yeah it feels even worse, chris. we know temperatures are so low. and with the windchill you were talking about, that is in the negative degree. i should have a scarf covering my mouth because everything not covered is going to get frostbitten. anyone getting off the bus is huddling close, moving as quickly as they can to get where they are going. it is that cold out here. the overnight workers, the early morning workers going throughout the city right now, going to their destination. and they are all bundled up in layers. it is cold. there are a lot of code blues in effect throughout the area. we'll dig into that and gather that information. more on that coming up in a half hour. reporting live in upper darby at 69th street station, katy zachry "nbc 10 news." katy cover your face and get somewhere warm.

we'll check in with you in a moment. a reminder to track the plunging temperatures through the new nbc10 app. get the latest forecast and alerts to your tablet in a free download from the app store. overnight, the extreme cold made it tough on firefighters to try to get the upper hand on this fire in bethlehem. 50 firefighters responded to an alarm manufacturing company on public road as they finally got the fire knocked down. >> we had several hoses freeze the trucks freeze up the guys were frozen and the cold had a lot to impact us. >> it was definitely tough on them out there. the cause of the fire is still under investigation and the good news is no one was hurt. 4:04. happening today a judge will sentence a philadelphia man for beating his brother to death with a baseball pet. paulo pidero was found guilty of killing his brother art in 2013.

the victim's body was found wrapped in plastic on the basement of a home on cranston avenue. in bucks county a driver accused of killing a teenager girl at a bus stop will stand trial. the judge made the ruling yesterday at michael shelley's hearing. police say he killed minete zeka. she was trying to get on her bus in ben salem township in december. witnesses say the boy's windshield was covered up. and gregorio orrostieta is accused of beating his girlfriend, karli hall at her apartment on upmonday night. and six years ago officer

pilosky was shot and his killer is now serving a life sentence. and we want to show you how a toddler was hit and killed by a trolley in west philadelphia yesterday. here's a picture we have from surveillance video. the child's mother on the left-hand side of the circle was pushing the stroller. she was crossing lancaster avenue. the 2-year-old is behind that gray car there with another woman and steps into the street right in front of the passenger truck. >> i had to look fast. you could hear the scream and howl. by the time we got there, the kid was under the trolley. there was nothing you could do about that. >> the witnesses tried to lift the trolley off the boy but they couldn't save him. and listen to this a man who they say faked his death in a boat crash turned himself in yesterday after several months on the run. he has until this afternoon to

post bond. andrew vittle crashed a boat that he was supposed to be repairing. his attorney says he turned himself in last night wanting to do the right thing. the couple who owned the boat said they knew the law would eventually catch up to vi strks t vittle. >> i just want to walk away and not deal with this guy again. >> everyone wondered where he went during the last eight months. he's facing multiple counts of deception and fraud. the judge wants him to post a bail today or he will go to jail. and pennsylvania has the second lowest measles vaccination in the country among

windchill near minus 6, it's colder north and west. and we are not going to get relief any time soon. meteorologist bill henley is back in a moment with a look at how the rest of the forecast is shaping up. you saw it there and are waking up with the coldest air this winter. we know there's subfreezing temperatures leading to broken water mains and plumbing problems. nbc 10 was with the department yesterday fixing a broken pipe in philadelphia. the crews are also checking for leaks in underground pipes to try to fix those before they get out of hand. one worker described how they do the inspections. there's a couple different pipes with septa and the main and there's a rod system to put on the line. >> now here you see workers using that system to tap into what is happening with the water pipe underground there. two ways to prevent your home pipes from freezing. keep your kitchen or cabinet

doors open to allow warmer air in. and let the cold water drip from your faucet overnight. exactly how cold is it going to get? this morning and later this weekend meteorologist bill henley have have the forecast coming up in about five minutes. and then there are those who work in this cold. a community in south philadelphia is very much awake. this is what it looks like inside the city's wholesale produce market. a place where hundreds of workers clock in for the grave shift. overnight they unload trucks of produce, fill orders and meet with customers. much of our produce comes from here. some don't mind the hours and others say it is a challenge. >> it is conditioning your body to go to sleep when you're supposed to go to sleep. you can't watch football games at night and can't watch the 11:00 news you have to be in bed. >> does this help you wake up? >> this is my second one already. and my third one is coming yet.

will reunite on that show. it will be a good one. 4:18 now. this morning philadelphia is feeling the love after being picked to host the 2016 democratic national convention. the city of brotherly love will serve as the backdrop when democrats nominate their pick to succeed president obama. the dnc chair debbie wasserman schultz said they chose pennsylvania because of the role it plays in history. but they said a little namedropping didn't hurt their chances either. >> when you have folks like jay-z and pope francis pick your city to do stuff, you know it's like -- what else are you going to do, right? >> i just want to say one thing, folks do work they do work. i called debbie wasserman schultz for the last half a year. >> organizers plan to hold this event at the wells fargo center with events also at the pennsylvania convention center.

watch the facebook video how democrats made their announcement, it's pretty creative. that's on your nbc news app. we'll get you to breaking news we are following out of delaware k. firefighters are on the scene of a house fire in sharon hill. a live picture from the scene. the fire started a half hour ago and everyone made it out of the home safely. firefighters are just getting the fire under control here to make sure the family inside can return return. and we have new information in the murder in chapel hill north carolina. the fbi is now investigating to see if federal laws were brought out in this case. there was a dispute over parking spaces, but the victim's family says this is clearly a hate crime because the victims are muslim. this man is charged with social

security murder. it's a outspoken kid who felt condemned by religion. now the murders are the three students close to a home but students at temple university held a vigil last night to show support for the victims and their families. and in southern california, more than 20 marines are recovering from injuries after a training exercise went wrong. this happened at the marine base known as 29 palms. extinguishers went off accidentally and the marines are treated for breathing problems. they are all in stable condition. a frigid start this morning with temperatures coming way down and still falling at this hour. a bitter cold morning with temperatures hovering right around the single digits to start with but the windchills thanks to the gusty winds that are already with us will make it feel like 6 below to 7 degrees.

it is going to be 12 degrees in philadelphia this morning, but the winds are gusting to 23 miles an hour. it will feel like it is 6 below zero right now. with clear skies, we are in for a lot of sunshine. but the wind is going to be steady even into this afternoon. probably not as strong as it is right now, but certainly strong enough to make it feel cold. 12 in philadelphia. but look at the single digits. kenneth square chester springs, down to 8 degrees. 5 in doylestown. but the airport ins showing strong winds as will. 28-mile-an-hour winds make it feel like 9 below zero in wilmington. 12 below zero in trenton. a very cold start, but it is there. we'll see lots of sunshine today. tomorrow, we'll get some light

new jersey governor chris christie seeks a new low as his approval rating has dropped to the lowest point. when asked why the governor is losing favor, residents mentioned attitude behavior and personality. 15% referred to the george washington bridge scandal. and 10% blamed his lack of attention to new jersey as he talks of making a potential run to the white house. president obama is going to tackle cyber security and protection today at stanford university. and he'll focus on security for american business and consumers. several ceos from visa bank of america, paypal and apple will also be there. helping to curb suicide. president obama signed a bipartisan bill yesterday. this new law is named for a marine who committed suicide in 2011 after serving in iraq and
