good morning. pummeled. in boston nearly a foot of new snow on the ground this morning whipped around by winds of 65 miles an hour making it feel like a bitter 35 below. mass transit already shut down roads across the region a nightmare be with and power outages expected to climb througho the day. all told nearly 100 million people affected by this storm. we are live. our reporters battling the elements. gunned down. breaking news overnight. police in denmark shoot and kill a terror suspect who opened fire on them near a train station. that suspect believed to be responsible for two deadly attacks. this morning, the investigation into whether he may have been part of a larger terror cell. trouble in the skies.

and welcome to "today" on this sunday morning. i'm erica hill. >> i'm lester holt alongside sheinelle jones and dylan dreyer is in boston this morning where the snow is really coming down as promised. but she looks like she's snug inside the blue mobile. we'll check in with her in just a moment. the weather is of course our top story. all the reporters are out there in the field this morning. the snow has already been falling heavily in boston for hours at this point. as new england is dealing with that non-stop snow tens of millions of people are dealing with a huge drop in the temperature. we are covering it all for you from the middle of the storm. we begin with nbc's miguel almaguer who's in boston this morning. >> reporter: erica, good morning. it was a tough night and it will be an even longer day here in boston and beyond. they are waking up in this region saying here we go again. there is simply no place to put all of this snow. as you can see, it is still hammering down. overnight and into this morning, steady snow and whipping winds across new england. this crippling storm with

blizzard-like conditions blasting millions from maine to connecticut. >> it's terrible. it's hard to walk down to. >> reporter: in boston where almost 80 inches of snow has already fallen this winter -- >> it's a disaster. >> reporter: -- nearly a foot more expected. today, rail bus and ferry service all suspended. another paralyzing blast in this historic winter. >> my car might not move for another month if i don't get it out of here in the next 20 minutes or so. >> reporter: officials are pleading with the public. >> we urge you all to stay off the roads. >> reporter: stay home. the roads not just dangerous, tle they could be deadly. on i-90 in erie pennsylvania this weekend, a more than 100-car pileup. while further to the west in indiana, accidents littered the roadway. >> everybody was going a little bit too fast. come up in this whiteout. >> reporter: the winds won't help today. in some areas, nearly hurricane

force gusts are expected. power outages, flooding and beach erosion, a major concern along the coast. . in maine, they could see a whopping two more feet of snow the national guard already deployed. >> if i stayed inside for the entire time that it's going to snow this winter i feel like i'd probably be inside forever. >> reporter: it's not just snow and wind but the bone-chilling cold. this arctic blast could drop the windchill in some areas to negative 35 degrees. what a headache on this holiday weekend. erica? >> that it is. headache is putting it mildly i think, miguel. thank you. with those vicious winds with be no surprise along the coast of massachusetts, the storm is really nasty this morning. the weather channel's jim cantore ry is in plymouth. jim, good morning. >> reporter: lester this relentless winter continues here across southeastern new england. we are in plymouth mass. you can see behind my the wave action here in the bay has just been huge. some of it splashed over into

the parking lot. the wind a little different with this blizzard though. it is a little offshore so we aren't seeing it run up to this area. back in january with the blizzard the water actually came up through here and ran right into this area. the deal with this storm -- the storm, the intensity and the winds. winds are already gusting to 65. miles an hour. all sorts of records just continue to be shattered in the boston area. a little bit of a saving grace is it is sunday as opposed to monday morning for a rush hour. but another day where mass transit shut down over 400 cancellations at logan airport. nobody's going anywhere on the roads in these conditions. even when it stops snowing, you can see the irnntensity of the snow creates visibility below zero. by this time tomorrow morning, windchills will be 20 to 25 below. even when it is not snowing, relentless cold follows each storm, another potential already for midweek next week.

will it ever end? we'll just have to say and see in boston. we are number three now all-time for the season of boston. a lot of that coming in the last 30 days. >> i think jim cantore was literally disappearing. >> that was wicked. that's exactly what you would say in boston. right, dylan? wicked awful is probably how it is being described or perhaps in more harsh terms we can't say on morning television. i know you have a closer look you are there in the blue mobile at what's coming up with the storm. >> yes, we've got another several hours to go. by noon 1:00 we'll see this storm pull away. but in the meantime, look out the front of the blue mobile here. this street was actually literally just plowed 90 seconds ago. you can see the road is already back covered with snow. that's the wind blowing from left to right here across the road. this is the problem why you can't be out on the roads. because when those gusts pick up up to around 30 to 40 miles

per hour you are instantly in whiteout conditions and it is impossible to see around you. the crews have been out. stay off the roads, stay home until at least noon today for them to get going on the roads. but we are going to see this storm system remain strong for the next several hours. winds will continue to toss the snow around because this is a light and fluffy snow. winds are only going to get stronger as this storm system pulls away. so overnight we're looking for winds to still be up around 40 to 60 miles per hour and that is going to create just dangerously cold windchills. this is a holiday week coming up. we've got presidents' day on monday and school vacation week. a lot of folks will be out to try to play in the snow ski vacations. but when you look at windchills 30 degrees below zero any exposed skin can get frostbite very quickly. we are talking about some wild numbers here but it is in fact very dangerous to be outdoors especially monday. we'll start to see improvements though temperature wise as we go through the week but the windchills are going to be just incredible especially later on

today and into monday morning. guys? >> all right, dylan. thanks. as you can expect from a storm of this size you can really see it on the graphics dylan showed us. there are plenty of travel problems rippling across the country. so far this morning, more than 1,800 flights have been canceled. a majority of those are from new york area airports and from boston's logan international. let's turn to late-breaking developments now in those terror attacks in denmark. this morning the suspect accused of a horrific shooting spree there is dead. nbc's kelly koeb. >> reporter: they tracked down the suspect using the city's network of surveillance cameras and information from a taxi driver. they were waiting for are him early this morning. police say when he showed up he shot at them and they shot back. after a 12-hour manhunt, it all ended here. the man suspected of two terror

attacks shot dead by police early this morning in northern copenhagen. the danish police commissioner said they believed the gun man manacted alone. it all started at this cafe yesterday afternoon. dozens of bullets crashing through the glass. inside controversial swedish artist lars wilkes was holding a talk on free speech and islam. he was unharmed but two others were killed and a police officer injured. hours later, more gunfire, this time at a synagogue. police evacuated a nearby train station and locked down the streets. >> looked out the windows. saw this guy lining the street just on the other side of the pavement. >> reporter: a jewish man guarding the synagogue was killed. two more police officers were wounded. >> we will do everything we can to protect the jewish community in our country.

>> reporter: the shootings eerily reminiscent of last month's attacks in paris. cartoonists at french satirical magazine "charlie hebdo" were massacred. hours later 17 were dead. lars wilks was on the same list after drawing the prophet moment as moemd as mohammed as a dog in 2007. his house was firebombed and he was put under police protection. so police at this point still aren't naming this suspect and the questions now of course who was he and what was his motive. was it somehow tied to those paris attacks. also this morning, israel's prime minister once again telling european jews they're not safe and they shouldn't move to israel. lester? >> thank you very much kelly. we are also keeping a close

eye on ukraine this morning where fragile cease-fire took effect -- just took effect today. already there are reports of fighting however. nbc's kristin welker is at the house with more and how the president is keeping a close watch on this. >> reporter: erica, good morning. that's right, there were reports of minor shelling overnight but largely, this cease-fire seems to be holding. the u.n. security council is going to hold an emergency meeting today. meanwhile, president obama continues to monitor the situation while he vacations in palm springs. he's been in close contact with his allies yesterday speaking with the german chancellor and the president of ukraine, all leaders stress the need for this cease-fire to stay in place. and there is skepticism that that can happen. there was heavy fighting in the hours leading up to the cease-fire. now here's what the deal calls for. it calls for all sides to withdraw heavy weapons from the front lines immediately while reforms are worked on to ukraine's constitution. that is going to be a tough sell for both sides.

now this is something that the obama administration has been pushing for. secretary kerry traveling to the region. president obama speaking with german chancellor angela merkel here at the white house on monday. he also spoke with russian president vladimir putin. this is a small glimmer of hope in a crisis that has raged on now for more than ten months and claimed more than 5,000 lives. erica. >> thank you. there have been some scary moments aboard several flights to hawaii overnight because of the weather. yes, powerful storms over hawaii led to some severe turbulence. seven people were hospitalized after a united flight from newark declared an emergency and landed in honolulu saturday. six other flights were diverted from maui to honolulu because of the storms. heavy rain and wind gusts up to 59 miles an hour caused extensive damageoahu. another emergency on an

alaskan airlines flight from los angeles. it was turned around just before takeoff whether a passenger reported being stung by a scorpion. this picture was tweeted out by a passenger. the injured passenger got off the plane and declined medical treatment. flight attendants killed the scorpion. airline officials say it is unclear how the scorpion made its way on the flight. a manhunt is under way for the suspect in the shooting over a las vegas mother over a road rage incident. police released the sketch of a man who may be involved. tammy meyers was on her way home thursday after giving her daughter a driving lesson. a confrontation erupted with the occupants of a grey or silver sedan. that car followed her home and according to reports, one of the suspects shot meyers in the head. her son came out and fired at the car. last night the family said they would take her off life support. an update on a case involving golfer robert allenby who last month was found injured on a street in hawaii after playing in a tournament there,

his cash and credit cards missing. this week honolulu police announced the arrest of a 32 year-olds man with charges of identity theft and the use of allenby's credit cards. a spokesperson also confirmed allenby did not patronize an adult establishment as had been previously reported. a police detective told the associated press it was a case of mistaken identity. and how about 19-year-old zach levine who wowed the veterans last night at the nba's slam dunk contest. take a look. levine blue the competition away with an off the post through the legs slam. he is the youngest to win the trophy since kobe bryant did. he did it at 18. one of levine's dunks was inspired by the movie "space jam" that came out when he was just 1 year old. but he almost hit his head on the rim, he was so high. >> that's amazing. 18. >> can we just talk scorpions for a moment? would you get back on that plane? >> no! i want a new plane!

>> those flight attendants, they killed the scorpion. >> i want a brand-new plane. >> sheinelle, thanks. >> 19 by the way. not 18. dylan is in boston with a check of the rest of the country's forecast for us this morning. again, hey, dylan. >> hey, guys. yeah we are driving around in the snowstorm, the latest snowstorm to hit boston. conditions are really just bad. they're going to stay bad over the next several hours up until around noon 1:00. then we also have another storm system. this one will develop through plains and move through eventually the mid-atlantic into tuesday. it will develop overnight and we could see accumulating snow and rice. little rock and memphis could see up to a half an inch of ice possible sunday into monday. we could also see some accumulating snow across parts ever tennessee. this has the potential to develop into another storm system for the mid-atlantic. it is not quite set in stone if

all-stars this weekend and how they perform on the basketball court, of course. but some of the guys are also being noticed for their fashion. also ahead, looking for love in the 21st century is as easy as swiping to the left or to the right. but there are major privacy concerns so if you date online you'll need to hear this. and later as we look back at 40 years of "saturday night live," there is one person who's been with the show for more than half of his existence. his role so crucial that a number of cast members would be lot of without him. who could it be? you'll just have to watch and see. let's begin this half-hour with another check of this monster storm and bitter cold. dylan remains in boston. how is it looking out there, dylan? >> reporter: well out here it is a lot colder than it is in the blue mobile but you didn't think i was going to stay in there the whole time did you? i kind of want to show you just exactly what we're seeing here in boston because we've shown you so many times the huge mounds of snow that we have here. while they are impressive i want you to see just how much

actual snow is on the ground. we've got benches over here and the snow is just blowing right over it. that's what we're dealing with. this is why we have really no more room to put any additional snow. so far in boston in the past couple of hours, we have seen thunder snow with snowfall rates at about three inches per hour. imagine a downpour like you see in a regular thunderstorm though it happens to be snow instead of pouring rain. we've hs willalso had very gusty winds. in plymouth massachusetts, we've already had wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. it is very cold. this is a very light and flufffullyfluffy snow and it gets tossed around in the wind very easily. that's why we're looking at whiteout conditions blizzard conditions. even if the snow stops, blowing snow will remain an issue. this storm is going to start winding down early this afternoon. by 1:00 the snow should be done but the winds are going to last through the night and into tomorrow morning. we are looking at brutally cold

windchills. by monday morning, back from detroit, all the way up into new england and even stretching down into areas like north carolina. we are looking at windchills below zero. in boston it is going to be very cold tomorrow morning with windchills about 30 degrees below zero. so it is only going to get worse within and a good sunday. i'm meteorologist michelle grossman. a frigid day today. gusty, gusty winds so be careful. dangerously cold outside. we're going to see winds gusting 50 to 55 miles per hour. temperatures, 13 to 16 and windchills a lot colder than that. winds out of the northwest at 25 to 35 miles per hour but gusting higher than that as i mentioned. a couple chances for snow this workweek. by monday mostly sunny, frigid 19 degrees, and we're tracking the chance for snow monday into tuesday, 28 degrees. another chance of snow on wednesday. and temperatures right back into the 20s thursday and friday. all right, dylan, thanks for that. there is a little bit of a new trend popping up in fashion these days. you may have started to notice

potential prospects right at your fingertips. but your privacy may be at risk so you do need to be careful. >> it's all about split-second decisions. okay? you see a picture, you swipe down for yes, swipe up for now. instinct. that's what it is about. what you don't have. >> reporter: instinct is right. gone are the days where a couple's if irs meeting was usually in person. finding love in 2015 has a whole new look. 31 million people say they've used a dating site or app. but there's something security experts want you to know. >> our research which consisted of scanning 40 of the most popular dating apps actually found that 60% of them had serious security flaws. that a hacker could potentially attack. and gain access to information. consumers probably don't want them to have access to. >> you don't know if anybody's being themselves or portraying themselves truthfully so it is always sort of scary dating online. >> reporter: according to ibm's recent study, 73% of dating apps

have access to current and past gps location. 49% have access to a user's billing information. that's why experts say if you're going to use technology you might want to reel in what info you put out there. >> i would not feel comfortable turning over data about my preferences of any kind in that nature to a company that can use it any way it wants. >> reporter: but the world of online dating shouldn't be feared. this study is shedding light on a much larger issue. >> when developers are creating these apps they're focused on functionality and the usability of apps themselves. they're not necessarily focused on security. oftentimes security is an afterthought. >> reporter: but private and security he says should be your first thought. after that here's to finding love. >> you met on match.com? >> correct. >> now on this valentine's day, can i see here? you have this beautiful ring. >> yes. >> and congratulations. >> okay. >> thank you so much. >> thank you so much. >> he just had a ring in his pocket! i was like i'm using you.

[ bell tolls ] >> reporter: with each day in these mountains, there is new hope new promise in the day to come. for the sisters of the abbey here that promise lies in prayer. >> i came here to pray for the great sorrows in the world, struggles and the suffering. i wanted to help so many people so i thought maybe by prayer i could do that. >> reporter: 24 years ago maria joined this benedictine order at the foot of colorado's rocky mountains in a closed community where she and her sisters pray seven times each day and where she is also the ranch manager. >> cheese whiz. there you go. >> people are sometimes surprised that women are running a ranch but that nuns are doing it? i think people just don't think that nuns do that kind of thing.

but we find it a real complement to our spirituality. >> reporter: while much of what they raise and grow here is used at the abbey at its guest house, a few years ago word began to spread about their beef. >> i try to run it in a very reverent way. the animals are treated with care. >> people asked us. pretty soon we decided, well instead of just selling the cattle off, why don't we raise them and sell the beef? pretty soon we didn't have anymore. >> reporter: last year the abbey produced 13,000 pounds of naturally raised beef for 80 local families. and that still doesn't meet the demand. are you surprised at all the reaction you've had to your beef? >> a little bit. i didn't expect quite that much. my sisters at home say, oh yeah i'd like to have that. >> but do they have to get on the wait list too? >> oh yes. >> even your sisters. >> even my sisters.

>> while the novelty of ranching nuns isn't lost on the sisters, there is also a profound connection in this work and a reminder of why they chose this life. >> we're not blind at all even in our enclosure to the great sorrows that many people experience. i believe -- and i think the vast majority of the sisters, that through prayer we can have an impact. >> the farm teaches you, you are not in control of any of it. and it taught me a lot also about how to laugh and how to learn to let go. >> reporter: a lesson even the most dedicated are learning every day. we should say in terms of letting go they say it is really hard to let the cows go. they raise them for two years. but they have a trusted gentleman in town who sort of takes on the next phase for them. but it is a fascinating place. they're really fun, interesting women. one sister was in the navy for 15 years before she had her calling. and it was really lovely the way they welcomed us in with open

wally. he's one of the rare cue card guys left on the job. it may seem like a relic of the past but for wally business is booming. >> this is two stacks of comedy. >> something just doesn't feel quite right. >> i don't know. i thought that was really fluid. >> yeah. felt really pure. >> pure. >> reporter: he has a company that employs 20 people. they handle cue cards for several shows. but it all started right here. right now we are in studio 8h or as people know the home to "saturday night live." how did you go et to lucky to call this your office? >> i don't know. i went to syracuse university for writing for tv and film and i wanted to be a writer. my brother at the time was workingthe david letterman show which was in the building. they gave me a shot. >> you wanted to write for tv. >> i wanted to right write for "saturday night live." >> well you are writing for

"saturday night live." >> reporter: wally has bob hope to thank. as the story goes the legendary comedian was having trouble remembering his lines. the solution -- cue cards. according to wally, "snl" creator lorn michaels is a big creator in them as well. >> he considers that part of what people come to see. we put every single word that they say on cue cards. >> the walls of famed studio 8h are overflowing with history. wally is a window into it all. >> i was in the dressing room when tina faye met sarah palin. it was amazing. i started with adam sandler. chris farley david spader those guys. all the experiences i've had as just a cue card guy are way more than i could have had as a writer. >> reporter: wally's office sits directly below the seats and bleachers among the plywood and cans of paint. do you know how many people have walked in this exact hallway? >> this is our cue card area. >> you're writing cards right here and right through there is the main stage of "snl."
