and that breaking news is an explosion that rocked a philadelphia apartment building blowing out windows and forcing everyone out into the bitter cold. a live look at the scene as investigators work to figure out what caused that blast. and the story to impact everyone this morning, brutal cold that has already broken records in parts of the area. windchills in most places feeling below zero. these folks at the bus stop are moving to try to stay warm there. and top of that first alert radar is tracking a snowstorm to hit later. several inches possible for many of you. good morning, welcome to "nbc 10 news today" on this very cold morning. i'm chris cato. this will be the wintry most

wintry, week of the winter. we are here to help you prepare this morning, and let's begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. bill it doesn't do it justice to say it's cold outside. you can look at numbers all day, but when you step outside, you feel how brutally cold it is. 2 degrees here at nbc 10. and the temperature is still falling. clear skies and fortunately a strong wind is blowing through the area to make it feel like it's well below zero. this is the first alert weather day for dangerous cold. we are looking at windchills right now of 15 to 25 degrees below zero. add to that the snow that you mentioned that is moving in late tonight at this time tomorrow with snow falling and accumulating. right now it is just the temperature falling. zero in reading to tie the record since 1904. pottstown at zero. allentown, wilmington and philadelphia, northeast

philadelphia, just above the zero mark by a few degrees. factor in the wind it feels like 16 degrees below zero. in philadelphia the windchill is 21 below zero. in reading, 21 below. limit your time outside if possible. at 7:00 we'll see sunshine but the bitter wind will be blowing. 3 degrees by 7:00. by 9:00 8 degrees. then sunshine and still blustery but the wind will be dying some as we go into the afternoon. that's when the temperatures will pop up into the upper teens. a cold day all around. we'll go through it hour by hour with the future weather when i'm back in ten, but right now i'll go to nbc 10's katy zachry live in southwest philadelphia. good morning katy. >> reporter: oh it's cold. the nbc 10 weather app says it is 4 degrees in southwest philadelphia, but it feels like negative 16. oh, my zboshgosh i think this is the

first time i have felt what negative 16 feels like. we are outside the largest wholesale market where industry is still thriving despite the cold temperatures. many many truck drivers behind me are trying to stay warm in their cabs right now because it is downright frigid outside. in a few minutes, a lot of them have to pull up to the warehouse and start up loading their dozens of palettes of fruits and vegetables. we have overnight workers, sleep deprivation and we thought we would take a break and talk about the cold because you cannot ignore that this morning. your kids will be standing out at the bus stop and need layer upon layer to try to stay warm. better yet, try to drive them there to stay in the car to keep warm. for a look at the roads this morning and traffic, and if anything is affected because of the cold fortunately there's no precipitation we're finding. so hopefully the roads should be pretty good for the morning commute. good morning to you. good morning to you, katy.

you have that exactly right, no big issues being reported out there. this is a live look of 95 near philadelphia international airport. it is quiet out there and clear. we are not reports accidents on most of the area highways. in fact, things are looking good out there. lines of green on the pennsylvania turnpike in both directions. that means no delays to report there. drive times are pretty average between 22 and 23 minutes between bensalem and valley forge. chris? 4:04 as we continue to follow breaking news in philadelphia. emergency crews are on the scene of an apartment building explosion in the chestnut hill neighborhood of philadelphia. matt delucia is standing by live for us there. what can you tell us how did this happen and what is going on now? >> reporter: well, chris, i'm told ten people including a 2-year-old child were forced out of their home this morning. fortunately, no injuries which is pretty remarkable considering the damage to this building. you can see the windows and part of the wall have been blown out. this happened shortly before 2:00 this morning at the corner of ardley and benazine streets.

this was quite the scene earlier today with several apartments in this one building. there's not much if any, damage on the second floor. but of course you see on the first floor there's a lot of damage. the red cross came out to get the nine adults and one 2-year-old child out. police confirm this was, in fact, an explosion involving natural gas. we'll come back out here live to give you another look here at the scene where you can see pg&e crews remain out here along with the philadelphia fire department. i just spoke to the neighbors who live on this block who tell me what they heard was just a loud boom. at what point it was a tree that fell until she looked outside. i'm getting that audio together coming up in 30 minutes. now we are live in chestnut hill, matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." matt 4:05 now. a movie theater in delaware county will be closed today thanks to a water main break. the extreme cold may have played a part in this break at the amc

theater on route 202 and route 1 in chadsford. people were rushed out of their movie last night because of flooding. in ocean county the dangerous cold seems to be to blame for a woman's dead. a neighbor found 66-year-old olivia bonita face down in the snow. the two had drinks hours earlier at the neighbor's home. they were going to short a walk distance to their home but donita never made it. police are waiting on the autopsy report. and our first alert coverage will continue throughout the morning. at 4:15 you'll see the damage the strong winds caused across the area. at 4:30 the city is making pet owners pay for leaving animals outside in this weather. and at 4:45 the cool picture the media is painting for the new jersey shore. and the new nbc 10 app can be downloaded for weather alerts and information about the cold and the snow that is to come.

in other news we're following breaking news overseas with egypt bombing isis tarts in retaliation for the massive bhedings of christian hostages. they targeted training camps in libya after the terrorist group released a video claiming to have executed 21 egyptian christians in libya. you can see that image there. the militants claim to be from the tripoli province of isis. in the video one militant says we will conquer rome. and more breaking news overseas, this time from denmark. overnight police arrested two men accused of helping the suspect in the terror attacks in copenhagen over the weekend. the investigators believe the gunman may have been inspired by the attacks in paris last month. on saturday police say he opened fire at a cultural center and later at security forces outside a synagogue. two people were killed there. the suspect was killed in a gun battle with a s.w.a.t. team yesterday. we're learning more now

about the crash that killed a brother and sister? in chester county over the weekend. the driver was drunk and speeding when he rear-ended a mini van on uwchlum township on ship road. charlotte was a jr. at downing high school west. miles was a westchester university student. their parents are still in the icu. the suspect, thomas moore, remains behind bars on charges of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence. happening today, a heads-up for drivers. the philadelphia streets department will inspecting bridges. the strawberry mansion bridge and the martin luther king bridge will be looked at with the work continuing until friday. all city offices are closed today, there will be no trash or recycling pickup all city district health offices are

closed along with parks and recreational facilities and libraries. and if you have the time off, why don't you study up on your presidential history at the national constitution center in philadelphia. there are presidential costume contests along with many other things going on. and today there will be a cake cutting and birthday party for george washington. and they will launch a new tour called patriot trails aimed to reinvent the struggle for the nation's independence. it is a frigid start this morning but temperatures are plummeting and the wind is still blowing making for a dangerously cold morning. temperatures feel well below zero. we have seen records already tied and they are about to be broken as temperatures still come down. the bitter winds will be strongest this morning.

they will die down some this afternoon, but it will never feel warm. we will see sunshine today, but tomorrow we're tracking snow. in fact, the first snow is going to start falling late tonight. and heading out the door right now, zero in reading. that ties the record for the state. philadelphia and wilmington are just above the record of 2 degrees for both those locations for right now in philadelphia. wilmington is 3 degrees. and the wind well, it takes a break every so often, but it's not coming to an end. not this morning. we are still seeing healthy gusts. look at the wind gusts in the pocano mountains, philadelphia wilmington has 30-mile-an-hour wind gusts and gusting to 31-mile-an-hour in wildwood where it feels like 11 below zero. 18 below in wilmington. 16 below in northeast philadelphia. there is cold all around this morning. we will see sunshine. no sign of any clouds as we get some sunshine today, but the next round of clouds is not that far away. you can see them moving into the midwest. and this is the storm system

that is going to bring us the snow starting late tonight. during the day today we'll just watch the temperatures. hour by hour you will see them slowly climb as the wind dies down some. still blowing at 10:00 in the morning, 12 degrees in philadelphia. it will be 9 in allentown. pottstown up to 11 degrees. south jersey will make serious progress this afternoon. low 20s in millville. at 2:00 this afternoon, it is 19 in allentown. 21 in philadelphia. it's never going to feel warm however, today. lots of sunshine bitter cold with windchills of 20 below zero while the actual temperature warms to the teens and very low 20s. a look at when you can expect the snow to arrive with the future weather when i come back in ten. 11 minutes after 4:00 this morning. let's hope your heater in your car is ready to roll. jillian mele is here to look at the highways this morning. >> we have a pretty quiet start on the highways.

no accidents to report no delays. some of the overnight construction we're used to seeing, nothing is tying up traffic anywhere. this is a live look at center street, the vine street expressway. that's the westbound side as drivers head out to 76. you can see it clear out there in both directions. drive times are 76 eastbound from the p.a. turnpike to the vine to take you 22 minutes. 13 minutes on 95 southbound from woodhaven to the vine. if you are traveling the blue route northbound from 95 to 76, that willic take you 17 minutes. and next the impact that the high winds are having on one local family this morning. and how one father says a stroke of luck may be the only reason he's alive. and a lot of people are working in philadelphia as the rest of us sleep in our warm beds. the overnight industry to help put food on a lot of local tables.

4:15 and we are heading toward the record in philadelphia, 2 degrees right now. very cold. the windchills make it feel like 15 below. take a live look at center city this morning. definitely limit your time outside if you have to go out there this morning. we have video that we shot here just a few minutes ago with one person out braving the winds overnight in media. the bitter cold weather has kept most people indoors for obvious reasons. definitely limit your time outside and keep your face covered when you go out. this morning, look at this some people back in hair homes after strong wind brought down a tree on their apartment building yesterday morning at the falls apartment complex in east falls.

one of the branches broke through to the apartment on the top floor but no one was hurt. well, in delaware county they are dealing with a similar problem. look at this a free fell on their home in newtown square. firefighters had to rescue a woman who was pinned by a coffee table while holding her 2-year-old daughter. her husband says they are lucky they weren't hurt or worse. >> had i been home i probably would have been on the couch where the tree fell and crushed. and battlefield new jersey will be closed to tours because of the extreme cold weather. it will reopen for walk-up tours for the rest of february and march on the weekends. and many schools are closed on presidents' day, but there are a few weather-related closings that you can see on the nbc 10 app. now is a great time to remind you that you can sign up for school closing alerts.

they are sent straight to your phone. the moment your child's school makes a decision to close or start on a delay, you can sign up on nbc10.com. teenagers aren't getting enough sleep. that's a trend experts say has gotten worse the last 20 years. a new study finds the average teen only gets seven hours of sleep per night. they generally need nine to ten hours. researchers say social media, smartphones and obesity could be contributing to the lack of rest. and, of course lack of sleep isn't limited to just the teenagers out there. we know that well. hundreds of workers are inside the city's largest produce warehouse in philadelphia. they start their day around midnight and they wrap up when most of you are waking up. nbc 10's katy zachry is joining us there live now to show us this morning how this third shift lifestyle can really take a toll on your health if you don't manage things, right? >> reporter: hi chris. we are going to talk about that throughout the morning, but first i want to take time to

introduce you to the overnight workers. this is one of the largest warehouses in the country. there are dozens and dozens of trucks waiting here to be unloaded with palettes of fruits and vegetables. around this time customers are showing up to buy the goods. >> i have cantaloupe here. >> when this man gets to work every hour it's early. and it is cold. >> is that your first one? >> this is my second one of the day and my third one is to come. >> reporter: coffee is featured in most forklifts at this hour. it is 3:00 a.m. a lot of these guys have been on the clock since before midnight. >> i've got to be in to work at 10:00. >> reporter: what is it like getting ready to work when people are going to bed? >> it's not too bad. >> reporter: he's done it for

years. >> cucumbers, tomatoes peppers. >> there's a lot of stuff. you have to look around. >> reporter: many of the workers are here inside the largest produce market. two dozen companies here distribute fruits and vegetables. many to restaurants and the public every day. it is why the sales team comes in around 2:00 a.m. while most of the world is sleeping, they sell fruits and vegetables that may end up on your table. >> the produce has got to move. i love what i do for a living. i'm very very lucky. >> reporter: do you love the hours? >> they are the only hours i know. >> reporter: yeah a lot of these guys these are the only hours they know but do they really work with their body their family their schedules? a lot of these guys will tell you it's been very challenging over the years to get four

five, maybe six hours of sleep a night. so we put that concern to a sleep specialist who broke down the nitty-gritty. you'll want to hear this. we talk about sleep deprivation and how it can adversely affect your life for overnight workers and for the rest of us who don't keep these hours. that's coming up over the next hour. reporting live in southwest philadelphia katy zachry "nbc 10 news". and the brutal winter just keeps rolling for those in new england after getting hit with a fourth major snowstorm in a month. several roofs have collapsed because of the heavy snow. like this strip mall here in new hampshire. and the roof of an apartment building in maine also caved in as people were forced to leave their homes. and now the race is on to clear the snow from other buildings before the same thing happens. and it's been a historic winter in boston. and now another snowstorm may hit that area by the middle of this week. a foot of snow fell yesterday in

boston piling on to the top of the 6-foot snow mounds from previous storms. today's strong winds are also expected to create snowdrifts to make it harder for crews to clear the streets there. meteorologist bill henley yet again here is he to show us the cold and snow. >> it will be cold snow and then another blast of cold. it won't be a good week at all. right now we are looking at plenty of cold from the pocano mountains. the wind makes it feel like it is more than 30 degrees below zero. that's a live view from camelback. temperatures all across the region reason frigidly cold this morning. we will see plenty of sunshine in the pocano mountains and the rest of the area will see sunshine. and looking at these numbers, we certainly need it. allentown, 1 degree. northeast philly 4. atlantic city, that ties the record 3 degrees right now this

morning. look at the winds still blowing near the nbc 10 studios. windchills have stayed below zero through the night. and lows for the morning will be below zero. the hour-by-hour forecast on monday, 12 below in philadelphia. by 9:00 it will still feel well below zero. for allentown and even at the shores 7 degrees below zero. and then going into the afternoon, the air temperatures will warm to near 20 degrees. but the windchill in philadelphia only 10 degrees. so a blustery day all day long. the radar completely clear for us but you can already see what is coming for tonight and tomorrow. there is the snow moving into kentucky, tennessee, southern missouri, illinois and indiana. that's the system that is going to be coming into our area with accumulating snow that will start late tonight. the future rain and snow shows the evening commute today will be just fine. but then by late tonight. that's accumulating snowfall

moving into the area at 11:00 tonight. then overnight tonight at 4:00 tomorrow morning, that snow is going to be heaviest in delaware and south jersey. but it will also move into philadelphia. by 9:00 in the morning, the snow will start to taper off. so accumulation you can count on it. look at the numbers, by 5:00 tuesday morning, just over 24 hours away we'll get 3 inches on the ground in philadelphia with additional accumulation in delaware and south jersey. by the time this one rolls through the morning commute, as much as five inches will be on the ground in philadelphia and tapering off quickly at 2:00 in the afternoon. we'll see totals ranging from 3 to 8 inches in our region from the storm that's coming through tomorrow. for today, we have to deal with the cold. and that will be a up challenge, bitter cold and gusty winds. 18 to 21 degrees for the high temperatures. with the wind it will feel like 20 below zero. the full seven-day forecast coming up in the next half hour. thank you, bill.

it is just a bag of good news there at 4:23. let's hope jillian mele can give us a better outlook on the roads. >> i have better news on the roads, we are not reporting any accidents out there on the highways. starting off in the lehigh valley, the majors there, a lot of green on our map right there. so that indicates the roads are clear, no big spots of construction out there right now. 22 is looking good 78 to the northeast extension all free of any big problems. in fact this is what it is looking like outside on route 22 at airport road. you can see just a few drivers out there, so the roads are clear right now. coming up in a few minutes, i'll take you to a live look of 76. well, the mystery is solved at a college in the pocanos. next the uncomfortable illness to make dozens of students sick. plus the new rule of the uncertain future unfolding above our heads.
