states of emergency declared. our weather team has it covered. start with dylan dreyer in boston. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the snow has returned here in boston. but yesterday, we hit 40 degrees for the first time in 44 days. in other parts of the country, it was anything but spring-like, from texas, where dallas hit their record daily snowfall yesterday with just under for you with inches of snow it stretched all the way up into new england. and we do have states of emergency in alabama, in mississippi, also up into west virginia and new jersey where the snow is very heavy. it went from rain to ice to snow. so that's what's making the roads extremely dangerous. now, it is going to slowly spread east through the day today, making a mess of washington, d.c. area, where busch offices are closed today and congress is closed today pause of the snow they are expecting. it is certainly, hopefully the last final blow pause next week it looks like we are going to get into a pattern change and start to see some warmer temperatures. but al especially pack through

really starts getting heavy in washington philly new york city snow falling at up about to two inches per hour likely four to seven inches. it continues into the afternoon hours with winter storm warnings. look at the snowfall amounts. generally, about anywhere from three to six inches but from long island into new jersey, about six to nine inches. and this is going to be a pig problem later this morning into the afternoon hours, up to a half an inch of ice down through the southeast. that's where we can see power lines going down roads a mess. 2500 flights have been canceled already. those numbers will go up. you as dylan mentioned, we do see a light at the end of the tunnel. good news it is not a train. security? local police say the embassy did not ask for an escort service and no metal detector at the door. this alleged assailant, matt and savannah got in despite previously reportedly attacking the jap fwheez ambassador with a piece of concrete. >> they are going to have to review those procedures and those injuries are gruesome but they could have been a lot worse. thank you. big story in politics this morning, hillary clinton responding for the first time to this growing controversy over her use of a personal e-mail county as secretary of state. in a tweet late last night, she says she asked the state department to release her e-mail. she has done so and wants them to do that as soon as possible. nbc's andrea mitchell has more on all of it. andrea good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. two days after the controversy over her use of private e-mail as secretary of state fit erupted, hillary clinton has give.first response on twitter, as you say, but that still may not reassure some democrats the way she has handled this issue.

after courting clinton foundation donors at this new york city restaurant wednesday night, hillary clinton tweeted at 11:35 p.m. "i want the public to see my e-mail. i asked state to release them. they said they will review them for release as soon as possible." she did not address why she used a private e-mail system exclusively while secretary of state or registered to her chappaqua home raising questions about whether her e-mails were properly archived. >> it's important to ensure that when official business is conducted on personal e-mail that those records are properly maintained and preserved. >> reporter: clinton aides say she turned over 55,000 pages last year to the state department but have not said whether she held anything back. and now the republican-led house committee investigating benghazi has subpoenaed all of clinton's relevant e-mails. >> i can't do what the house asked me to do which is to write the final definitive report on benghazi if i don't have all of secretary clinton's documents and e-mails.

mommy ""on wednesday, she testified she was thinking god, if this is it take me but let me know wa is okay. overnight, gregory wrote about her court appear perhaps on facebook, posting in an open to her alleged attacker, hanks, "today i looked at you right in the face and realized i wasn't afraid anymore and today, i realized that sitting across from you was somehow the crazy kind of step forward that i needed all along." badly wounded college student sydney cork ran also testified, saying "i remember feeling i'm just going to sleep. t almos peaceful. i was fading fast." the long-awaited trial opened wednesday with tsarnaev's defense lawyer making a stunning admission, it was him. looking to spare tsarnaev's life the defense looked to shift the blame to tamerlan saying tamerlan who self-radicalized, but prosecutors disagree arding that zoe har intended to be a spec tear the, murder had in his heart, adding he believed he was in a holy war against americans.

prosecutors say dzhokar tsarnaev began reading terrorist writings as early as 2011 two years before the bombing and they say just 20 minutes after the marathon attack he went to a whole goods grocery store, where surveillance video showed him calmly buying billing. underscoring the devastation of the attack prosecutors also showed the jury dramatic new video of the explosion, shattering the the windows of a nearby sporting goods store. employees inside scrambling to help those badly injured. one of the most compelling moments of yesterday's testimony was from the manager of that sborting goods store, marathon spots on boylston street who described choking back tears the moment that that explosion took place. he said the thing that haunts me the most are the agonizing decisions, who do you help first? who needs it more? matt more testimony expected today. >> peter alexander in boston this morning. peter, thank you very much. turn to natalie now. she is following this report on ferguson missouri's police department it is damning. >> certainly s city officials in

ferguson missouri say they are taking immediate steps to respond to that scathing justice department investigation that found a sweeping pattern of racially biased policing there. a separate probe has now cleared former officer darren wilson in the death of michael brown. here's nbc's ron allen. >> who's street? >> our street. >> reporter: overnight, word that darren wilson will not face civil rights charges and citing the federal investigation, protesters outside police headquarters demanded ferguson overhaul the entire force. >> the reaction from the city was not enough. >> reporter: one ferguson city employee has been fired, to more on leave for allegedly sending racist e-mails, some targeting the president and first lady, uncovered by the justice department investigation. >> this type of behavior will not be tolerated. >> this investigation found a community that was deeply polarized. >> reporter: among the more graphic allegations, that police used dogs almost exclusively against black suspects and used excessive force against people who were mentally ill. the feds now demanding ferguson

medical devices has now been identified as one of america's largest hospitals. cedars sinai medical center in los angeles says four patients under its care were infected by the highly drug resistant cre bacteria after a scoping device was used during a procedure. one of the four patients has since died but hospital officials attribute the death to underlying conditions. an additional 64 patients may have been exposed. some scary homes in denver on wednesday when some airline bassingers were forced to use the emergency slides. american airlines says the flight had just arrived from north carolina as the plane was taxiing to the date smoke filled the cox pit. slides were deployed and the passengers were safely evacuated. the cause of the smoke is remains under investigation. now we have some dramatic video to show you, just released of a michigan bus driver who police say fell asleep at the wheel, slamming into eight cars. it happened in a detroit suburb in october.

has syracuse students talking. >> a really bad image on this fraternities and sororit and greek life in general. >> actually quite ridiculous that someone has to go through all of that in order to be just a part of something. >> reporter: shortly after midnight on monday three pledges from the new alpha fi fraternity were taking part in what's being called forced exercise? a park near campus. the exercises, which lasted about a half hour included pushups and took place in 19-degree temperatures in an area with snow on the ground, according to local police. the pledges were not wearing gloves. one of them went to a nearby hospital complaining of pain in his hands. according to police he was diagnosed with severe frostbite and is in danger of losing his ring and binky fingers on both hands. syracuse police arrested 19-year-old ty kim and 21-year-old jeffrey yam, both new alpha fi members on charges of first degree hazing. they were released on appearance tickets for a court date in two weeks. authorities say the two

ending north to south later in the day. >> that's your latest weather. no doubt it has been a very difficult winter but for one woman in maine, kind of an adventure. willie is here with her story. good morning to you. >> reporter: diane cowan is a scientist who studies lobsters, been doing it a long time. the last month, she has been trapped on an island by this icy weather. >> this winter i have been iced in so far for 34 days. >> reporter: diane cowan works on friendship long island, off the coast of mai she is stranded. her boat her only means of transportation is iced in. >> i'm only a mile from shore. i can see lights on the mainland. i can see the main land. i just can't get there. >> reporter: diane is surviving just fine. she has food heat from the wood stove that she calls mr. green, electricity from a solar panel and her dog, sula which means sunshine in icelandic.

good morning, a winter storm is spreading snow all across our region. how much really depends on where you live. let's get right to nbc 10 meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. what's the latest glenn? >> the latest is the snow is getting heavier across much of the area. this is a live ping tourcture in south philly. we've shown you that picture all morning and you could see very clearly but not anymore. the rain/snow line is still fairly stalled from atlantic city to just south of dover. what that means is look at cape may, just getting some rain. but back to the west that snow area is not budging. and it's getting heavier and

>> good morning. matt look at possible i now, never know what he has been through, a wonderful 13-year-old boy, ready to go back to school when he is well enough but getting here took years. >> bobby was a happy and healthy child. he was in the gifted program at school. and he played many sports. >> reporter: but at 9 years old, bobby started having stomach pain that grew worse and worse. >> a would eat, woe get these what is sive pains, double over and start crying. >> reporter: carrie and tom started eliminating foods from his diet to see if he would feel better. >> eventually ended up only eating blue berries and chicken, it was pretty drastic. >> rep bobby needed a feeding tube and that wasn't all. he had headaches, tremors. he was unable to control his body temperature. >> reporter: doctors figured out bobby had a system affecting systems in his body that should be automatic, temperature

regulation blood pressure digestion. >> really horrendous pain and i couldn't hold my head up more than ten minutes at a time. >> bobby's health deteriorated he was in a wheelchair and losing his vision. >> we bent from doctor to doctor trying to find answers. >> everyone really helped -- helped out. it took a toll on everybody. >> reporter: then another diagnosis, doctors said bobby had a disorder affecting the strength of his ligaments but even that didn't seem to explain all of his problems. from her home in florida, carrie started doing her own research online. >> and i talked to all different moms that had children with similar problems and learned from them and i started putting the pieces of the puzzle together. >> the whole time we are looking at some black pain never imagining that the problem could be another part of his body his brain. >> reporter: the internet led carrie to dr. harold with cohen children's medical center, hundreds of miles away in new york. she sent him scans of her son's

skull and spine. so when you see bobby's scans, do you know immediately what's going on? >> yes. we see that the brain is distorted. i knew that he could be helped by surgery. i knew that the chronic pain that he was in could be helped that we could change his life. >> reporter: bobby's ligament condition was affecting his brain. >> the ligaments holding the head on to the spine are too loose. that allowed the bone to be pushed backward into the brain and caused the pain and some of the neurologic problems he was having. >> reporter: in december bobby went to new york for a surgery the doctor invented. during the six-hour procedure, he realigned bobby's skull with his spine and then screwed it in place. >> when you look at the boss on you see that there is noing an lation. there's no distortion of the brain. >> the pipe is looks straight. >> completely straight. >> reporter: they expected bobby's pain to go away but even the doctor didn't expect what

happened next his stomach trouble, light headedness all those things controlled by the autonomic nervous system they got better too. >> all of a sudden he just started getting better and walking around. >> it felt up real. i couldn't believe it. >> to me it's a miracle. it really is a miracle. >> doctors can't say for certain why his gastrointestinal and other nervous systems got better but may be because the spine was impacting his brain stem which, of course controls all those bucss. the doctor wants to be clear they need more research on this but i think the thing that's so compelling about this story, guys is that his mother did all this research and would not take no for an answer until she found someone and that's ultimately what led to his recovery. just like yesterday, takes one trained eye to look at something and say, wait a minute no. >> has to do with your ligaments and your brain. who would have known? >> a mom would couldn't give up. kate thank you.

back now, 8:45. something new in the kitchen, three things to do with we are picking different ingredients and teaching new ways to use them. first up cocoa. the author of the new book "let them eat cake" is here. nice to see you. welcome back. thanks for having me. >> we go through a lot of cocoa in my house, hot chot l.a. different kinds. go through the basics. >> what you usually find in your grocery store is natural cocoa, the rust-colored one.

what i by merely use is called dutched cocoa, it was made by a guy who was dutch. they take the acid out, makes it rounder, smoother and obviously makes it darker. you see all these baked goods, dark and rich and have the wonderful round cocoa flavor. >> going to show three recipes, you can do all of these grew then free or vegan. >> or healthier. or all the we will bells and whistles, the but the the flower. >> what is the big winewski? >> chocolatey fudgy, fab you louse cook yescookie. you will whisk together the flour, put in the cocoa, whisk it 30 seconds. it distrouble is he putting the levining the baking powder and i'm going to whisk these eggs until they are ribbon stage and into the eggs i'm adding espresso powder and the vanilla. espresso powder doesn't add a chocolate flavor i'm going to make it do something else. it makes the cocoa more cocoay.

make it is more chocolatey. you are going to put the flour into the chocolate and use your muscle and just mix it together. you don't have to be gentle. use a spoon. don't be gentle. use your muscle it gets really thick, right? >> gets really all over you, too. oh my goodness. this is not good. i'm a professional. there you go. beautiful. >> let's pretend i did that better. that goes into there. >> then we add the eggs and slowly bold them in in batches. if you add it in all at once it is hard to incorporate. if you add it like a third at a time it incorporates very easily. a disaster here. >> disaster. i really think you should watch, not participate. go eat. >> move on before you insult me more. ends up looking like this. >> if i do it yes. so what we do we take a hot and a wet scooper and you keep it hot and wet so that -- sounds so dirty, so that you easily get it out of the scooper.

so you just scoop it onto the pan and then what i also do is i get my hands a little moist, everybody's favorite word and i smush it down so that ben it bakes, they don't spread easily you got to smush it. >> what it looks like when it is done? >> yeah. . healthy here, a zucchini chocolate proceed. >> yes. >> really healthy or just a joke? >> it is really healthy if you add extra sugar not going to be healthy. it is really healthy. the cocoa is so healthy. i use black cocoa, obvious reasons, black, so dark so luscious. i made it into cupcakes, gluten free, one of tho cakes adaptable, make it vegan, healthier and then for parties, kids will never know there's zucchini in it >> what kind of icing is that? >> cream cheese icing. >> so not healthy. pretend we did that i want to show the whoopee pies okay? >> so great. obviously, chocolatey

good morning, i'm keith jones. a winter storm is bearing down on our region. if you need evidence of that take a look behind me. that's center city philadelphia. let's get right to glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn, how much more snow are we expecting here? >> we're talking about several inches in and around the philadelphia area points to the south. to the north there's already quite a bit. as you can see from the live picture just outside our studio that is pretty heavy snow. you can barely see across the street. that's some of the heaviest snow of the storm so far. you can see on the radar the darker blues getting into the area and we'll zoom in. you can see the darker blue from

east in chester county through northern delaware county right into philadelphia itself. but at the shore it's a different story. we're still getting the changeover. that line is moving southward very very slowly. we still have some wet streets in cape may, but eventually that will change the snow as well. the visibility tells us how heavy the snow is and it is heavy in chester county and in many places it's much heavier than it was even an hour ago. wilmington philadelphia, visibility way down. mt. holly, visibility way down. in northeast philly it's just a very heavy snow. starting to get heavier farther to the south. temperatures are also plunging. north and west we're down to 29. in pottstown, 26 degrees in reading and allentown so it continues to have a better chance of sticking. as you can see, the temperature

will continue to go down as we head through the afternoon and it's just going to be snow pretty much all day long. >> so you want to be tuned in for realtime information. our digital team is working hard right now. check out the nbc 10 weather app, it's a free download. just visit nbc10.com. now to the roads. many are slippery making for a rough commute out there. nbc 10 caught up with a salt spreld spreader on the ac expressway in women's low township camden county. any trouble spots, jill? >> we have an accident on the westbound side of the pennsylvania turnpike near the downingtown interchange. we're told two separate tractor-trailers are involved one is jack knifed so we do have a lane restriction or two out in that area. this is chester county route 35 bypass. watch your on and off-ramps. this is a perfect example of why. the ramps are going to be snow-covered and slippery. these are between the blue route and 95 in delaware county. speaking of 95 there's an accident right by the philadelphia international airport, so just slow down and

take your time. when it comes to septa, bus route 35 suspended, norristown high speed lane every 15 minutes and watch out for delays. the septa trains are on a regular schedule. amtrak has a modified schedule and dart is on a regular schedule. >> the snow is coming down in portions of northern delaware. that's where we find tim furlong. how are conditions there, tim? >> reporter: i walked out of my house this morning a couple hours ago and there's nothing down here. now you can see there's certainly something here. this is east main street which is usually very busy at center street near the university of delaware which is closed by the way. you can see what's happening to the roads here. some of the plows and salt trucks have been by but this is what's caked on here. again main street is a really busy street. you can see today it's not and you can see why. the snow is piled up. the side parking spots not too

too well. there have been a bunch of spinouts on delaware highway. the governor is getting ready to brief us in an hour or so. we're heading over there after we leave here. it's not a great day to go driving or do anything outside so far because the snow is coming down hard including go to walgreen's. they're probably very very bored because they keep coming out taking pictures of us. but i don't want to take away the seriousness of what's going on here because it is not a great day to go out. i called my wife in wilmington and told her to stay in the house, stay inside if you can because this is what you're looking at on the road. it's not a lot but enough to make the roads real slippery. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. philadelphia public schools and archdiocese schools are all closed because of this winter storm. you can see a list scrolling at the bottom of your screen. stay with nkz 10 and the nbc 10 news app for the latest school

right now on nbc 10 the snow is coming down all across our region and it will continue to fall for hours. this is a live look at i-95 in south philadelphia the shot by the way has drastically changed since about 8:00 a.m. this morning. we've got you covered with hundreds of cameras all over the area. this is a live look from the dash cam of the storm force 10. they're driving around in downingtown, chester county. you can see the treacherous conditions out there.

harry harrison is on the passenger side. we'll check in with him a little later. a quick programming note. if you're looking for the 10:00 a.m. hour of the "today" show you can watch that on cozi tv. good morning, i'm keith jones. the snow is coming down all over the area. all you have to do is look behind me to see you barely see anything. hundreds of businesses and schools are closed today. by the way, the city of philadelphia is under a snow emergency right now. that means cars parked on snow emergency routes could be towed. state offices in new jersey and delaware are closed today. there are a number of accidents and stuck vehicles across the area because of the deteriorating conditions out there. we have a team of reporters spread out across the region but first we begin with nbc 10 first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. the temperatures are dropping out there. how much longer are we expecting this heavy snow to fall? >> it's going to be hours more of that. we are in the middle of the biggest snowstorm of the winter.

just about to dover right now. look at the temperature drop. 30 in philadelphia.

36 at 5:00 a.m. 23 in allentown. it was 32 just a couple of hours ago. 23 in reading. so the temperature's falling so fast that more and more of this snow is going to stick. so at noon it is 29 with heavy snow. 26 at 3:00. 22 at 6:00 with the snow ending. it is going to take all day for it to end. here are the temperatures dropping along with the future cast with the snow. 2:00 in the afternoon, still heavy snow in southern new jersey and all of delaware as we finally taper off and end it up in the lehigh valley and poconos. once again, you can see there is 6:00, still snowing in delaware and south jersey. and finally, this evening, it moves out, but the temperature, well, it is going to go to record levels tonight. record cold tonight.

more on new snow totals and updated them that's coming up in just a few minutes. >> as glenn mentioned, everything will freeze too as the day goes on. snow emergency has been in effect for philadelphia for about four hours now. you have to move your car from the designated spill emergency routes so the city can tow it away. mitch blacher is live. what is it like where you are? i see the snow coming down. >> reporter: it is coming down pretty -- at a pretty steady pace at this point. it is as light as we have seen it since we have been out here, still pretty heavy. we're at cheltenham avenue. you can see the street the conditions, it is pretty slippery. we have seen a lot of slipouts and couple of spinouts from cars. we actually came up here because septa had some buses that were up here and they were stuck and had to be dug out and supervisors had to come and escort some of the passengers to another bus, auxiliary bus. septa tells us that 25 buses

throughout philadelphia had that same problem today. as you said there is a snow emergency in philadelphia basically means get your cars off of the snow emergency routes, or they will be towed. trash pickup has been canceled today in philadelphia. at this point, the streets are in the kind of shape you would think they're in. a lot of slick -- we encountered ice undersneeth theneath the street as we came up. the traffic is pretty light. they're doing the best they can to clean it up. that's latest from here in northwest philadelphia. i'm mitch blacher, nbc 10 news. >> we have crews all across our region now to track this winter storm. this is montgomery county, you see the snow coming down steadily along east high street and pottstown. the roads, the walkways slushy. nbc 10's doug shimell, we'll check in with him in a bit. this is berks county. look at this shot. this is high street and douglasville. our crew found this plow truck trying to clear away the snow and make the road safe for

drivers. north is under a state of emergency right now. for a look at the conditions there, let's go to cydney long in winslow township camden county. how are conditions there across in delaware? >> reporter: they are beginning to deteriorate. we came on the clock about 7:15 this morning. at that point in time these sidewalks, the glassy surfaces were not covered at all. we passed by this sign. we could actually read it about 8:00 this morning. now you can see it is covered up with a good coating of snow and slush, also look at the flags here behind me. we can tell you the winds are also picking up. but here is the good news. because this storm was a little bit delayed, a little bit slow in getting started, camden county officials tell us that gave them the chance the had head start, first to brine overnight, 3:30 this morning is when they started. take a look. we'll get not too close to the road here. we'll get the slush and spray off berlin crosskeys road but they have been out salting.

we're standing on the winslow township side here in camden county just across the street. it is gloucester township the same county. and right now the same accumulation of snow. let's look at that video that we shot just about exactly two hours ago, keith. this is what berlin crosskeys road looked at that point in time. so you can see a little bit how conditions have changed over the last few hours. it is usually a very congested roadway during rush hour but not many cars on the road as people off from work and school. also salting operations by the south jersey transit authority well under way along the atlantic city expressway which is just about a mile from where we're standing. the roads still are manageable. passable. we saw some folks out this morning getting the last minute errands done getting a quick movie for the kids or run to the bank. take a listen. >> we're going to try to enjoy the snow day and eat some pancakes. that's it. >> the morning progresses the snow will get heavier.

we'll deal with it as the day goes on. >> reporter: you can see some of the folks out and about getting a quick mom and her daughter getting a little something for lunch here at panera bread, maybe to stay in for the rest of the day. we're also in touch with the delaware river port authority as well as gloucester township police and winslow township police. we got a text from winslow township letting residents in the area to know to move their cars off the road if they want their streets plowed. otherwise, you're going to -- you're not going to be one of the lucky ones and might get snowed in a little bit later in the day. that's the latest live in winslow township cydney long nbc 10 news. >> state offices are closed, work is closed for a lot of people. we saw the woman out there enjoying pancakes on this day off. did you see traffic, though? is that picking up as the day goes on? people waking up later, perhaps? i think we'll check in with her in a minute. it is 10:06 now. temperatures are dropping across the area. the winter storm is also

affecting flights at philadelphia international airport. 75% of arrivals and departures, they're canceled until early this afternoon. so if you had a flight scheduled today, make sure to check on the status by calling 800-phl-gate. let's give you a check on travel conditions across our region. jillian mele is here with a check on first alert traffic. >> the only spot we're seeing a delay now is on the blue route because of an accident. this is northbound side near baltimore pike. you can see all of these drivers having to merge into one lane there because of an accident up ahead. that's the only problem that we're dealing with on a highway across the area now. this is a live look at 422 eastbound side at oaks. you see it snow covered. but we are not seeing heavy volume on the roads. looks like a lot of people stayed home today, which is a good idea. chester county, route 30 bypass at route 322, same situation there. if you're waking up in the lehigh valley route 22 that's where it is looking like it is a slow go across the area. for drivers in delaware, 95 newark toll plaza, that's a look at the conditions.

route 73 in new jersey. drivers just slowly crawling along now. and if you have to head out, make sure you take your time. when it comes to septa, bus 35 is suspended. other buses on detours. norristown high speed line is running every 15 minutes. market frankford line has no a or b service. the rest of septa, that's operating with regular schedule however you can expect to see some delays out there just because of the conditions. new jersey transit has system wise cross honoring. patco operating on a snow schedule. amtrak modified and dart on a regular schedule. >> parts of delaware are expected to see the most snow out of this latest winter storm. jim westoff joins us now. take for your time. important day to talk to you. tell us what your crews are seeing outside right now. >> good morning. yes, right now we're seeing the snow is coming down very steadily down in new castle county. we are also seeing snow also down in dover area. so roads are getting treacherous

in new castle. so we're seeing some accidents, but we're doing the best we can. >> we know the snow is spreading slowly south. the temperatures are dropping. everything is going to freeze. does that hinder your efforts in clearing the roads. >> the rain is like the worst way for us to start an event. it washes away any residual salt there. we can't prestreet the road with more salt. we have to wait for it to sleet or snow and then immediately apply salt. there is a time when the roads will be slick no matter how hard we try. >> looking at a live picture now. i believe this is down in newark delaware. and i wanted to talk to you first about any kind of problem areas you're seeing out there. obviously you use the word treacherous, people should stay off the roadways. secondary roads got to be a problem, right? >> yes. not just snow. secondary roads, as we speak, the primary roads are treacherous. route 1, i-95 just on the road

now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> it is 10:13 here at nbc 10. take a live look at this here. this is atlantic city. seizers in caesars in the background. depending where you're waking up is going to determine what you're seeing outside, whether it is the snow the rain. here we heard dell dot and jim westoff tell us warn everyone out there that the roads are treacherous in delaware and heavy snow is falling in philadelphia right now. just north of philadelphia let's look at how much snow is falling so far in montgomery county. nbc 10's doug shimell is live in towaminson township. >> reporter: it is severely reduced visibility. we're on 40 foot road south of welsh road. and we came up the northeast extension and the one thing we noticed is visibility dropped down to about 50 to 60 yards,

maybe a little bit further here. you're looking south along 40 foot road. on the northeast extension you got that new three-lane section and the turnpike authority, plow crews downing a great job at keeping two of the three lanes open. when you get down to the two-lane stretch around the lansdale interchange, it really becomes sort of a lane and a half. you end up sort of morphing into one lane. it was passable. and the old rule of thumb is stay in the rut. i did talk with dispatchers with montgomery county radio. they tell us they have had the requisite number of one car slide off the road accidents. and one dispatcher said it does appear as though drivers are slowing down but if they're going from 55 to 40 well perhaps they need to drop it down to 25 to 20. but she said no injuries that they can report in power outages and one of the other elements was, you know salt supplies in and around montgomery county bucks county we did talk with police in bucks

county, the public works folks tweeted yesterday and today that they were running a little bit low on salt throughout the county, everybody is by this point in the wintertime. they were saying that if you're on some of the back roads, lesser traveled roads, expect a little longer time for the plow crews to get there and get that salt down but be patient, it will all be done. live in montgomery county doug shimell, nbc 10 news. >> about an hour ago we showed a live picture from montgomery county. how have conditions changed? you drove out that way. how have the roads -- what did you experience? >> reporter: we have got roughly three inches of snow on the ground now. but absolutely no complaints at least in terms of our driving up here. we have four wheel drive suvs which doesn't really guarantee you anything if you're not driving safely. visibility still a factor. snow is piling up, this seems to be as we heard throughout the morning the heavier, wetter snow. it does seem to provide a little better traction than some of the

past one and two inch storms which were sleet and ice based. we had that going for us. which is nice i suppose. live in montgomery county doug shimell. >> 29 degrees out there now. 10:16. heading back to the city not everyone is staying inside today in philadelphia. we found these people out in the snow and the may fair section around 7:00 a.m. you see the sidewalks, the roads were already coated with snow. that was 7:00 a.m. behind me in this live shot of center city philadelphia you can see that the snow is falling strong right now. we'll get to that picture. the rain turned to snow later in the morning at least in gloucester county. this is video from washington township where the flakes finally started to fall around 7:00 a.m. we have crews checking out conditions all across our area this morning. the roads here this was along route 202 at north wilmington a few hours ago. see the road was slushy at that time but boy do things change. how long will the storm last? that's on everyone's minds now. let's go back over to nbc 10 first alert meteorologist glenn

"hurricane" schwartz with the latest on this storm. temperatures will drop. we checked around with our reporters, depending where you're waking up is really dependent on what you're seeing. >> there is a variety. you go far south in the area still just raining. and it is getting really cold up north. this storm is overall going to last all day. here is a live picture of city avenue outside the station. it has been plowed. a lot of traffic. and it is manageable. on the other side this is a parking lot and you can see lots of snow on there. just have to plow once got to plow every couple of hours to get rid of this stuff. it just keeps coming. right up from the southwest, right along the same band with thunderstorms. we call this training. right along the same train track and here we are northern part of new castle county just about all of delaware county in through philadelphia camden county, northern burlington.

we have got another batch of had heavier snow coming in to berks county. that will be moving into the lehigh valley. and farther to the south, we finally start to see snowflakes in the atlantic city area. and in central delaware it took a long time. these are just some of the preliminary snow totals. fleetwood, 3.9 inches in berks county, king of prussia, 3.5. emace, 3. allentown, 2. we'll keep updating those throughout the day. we have updated the snow map and pretty much where the original 6 plus was that we had predicted, well, 2 to 4 inches up toward the poconos, but 4 to 7 in the lehigh valley and berks county. so we raised those numbers. we have extended the 6 to 9 area, made it 7 to 10 just about all of chester county much of montgomery bucks, delaware county philadelphia

burlington gloucester camden new castle salem counties all in that 7 to 10 range. and then lower totals as you go farther to the south. it will eventually snow in sussex county delaware. and 23 degrees in reading and allentown, incredibly cold, 14 in the poconos, dropping by the hour 26 in pottstown. 25 in doylestown. now, we're getting cold enough 28 degrees at kennett square so that any kind of untreated surface is going to stick. 30 in wrightstown. now, farther to the south, this is warm enough for anything to generally melt on the roads, but as you saw, those temperatures keep going down. and that's what's going to happen throughout the afternoon. here is the future cast. 2:00 we still have pretty significant snow in all of delaware all of the southern half of new jersey. this is not close to being over.

and 4:00 the temperature down even more. 26 in philadelphia. keeps getting colder. more more sticking. and then we come to night fall. and it is going to be in the lower 20s. we're not going to get any sunshine that will dry things out. we don't have much wind to dry things out. everything is just going to freeze during the night tonight and then we get some record cold. the visibilities tell us how heavy the snow is. reading, quarter mile that's heavy snow half a mile i would call it moderate to heavy. and that's what we have in philadelphia. wilmington, northeast philly mount holly, heavy snow with a quarter mile wrightstown, toms river, that's accumulating snow. that's for sure. even atlantic city visibility has gone down. so for today, of course the snow heavy at times, ending north to south, gradually, not a

whole lot of wind. that temperature goes down. and during the night tonight, record low temperatures we're talking about near 10 in philadelphia, and 3 in some of the northern and western suburbs. some of those records go back as far as 1872. >> unless anyone thinks they're getting spared we saw rain on atlantic avenue. it has got to make efforts to clear the roads with the dropping temperatures difficult. you said snow is starting to fall in atlantic city. >> yeah but the first snow just like what we saw in the philadelphia area melts. and so you don't think that there is any kind of big deal. people woke up around here 5:00 this morning. 6:00 this morning. didn't look like much. it is looking like a lot more now, isn't it? >> a changing situation out there, glenn. thank you very much. we'll check in with you in a few more minutes. make sure you're following the nbc 10 first alert meteorologists on twitter and social media as this winter storm moves through. they'll be tweeting any changes

so you can always have the most up to date forecast and snowfall predictions. you can also check in with our facebook page, nbc 10 philadelphia for the latest updates. snow is falling across delaware. nbc 10 delaware bureau reporter tim furlong is live in newark new castle county. i'm sure you can attest to that. what are conditions like where you are? >> reporter: they're pretty bad. you know it is a real deal dell dot event when they bring out the cots. this is how you know it is a real deal event. we're here in the yard because governor markell will give us an update. i want to take you outside and show you what we're dealing with outside. all the dell dot trucks are geared up. you see the slush on the ground. and you can see it is a real mess at this point. the snow coming down really hard. visibility not great. local and state offices are closed today. it is not the worst time in the

world out on the roads in terms of the volume of traffic. but the people out there are slipping and sliding as you heard jim westoff say. state police say they had 23 crashes today, no life threatening injuries that's a good thing. look at the video we shot a little while ago on south college avenue in newark. that's a usually busy stretch of newark by the university of delaware. the university is closed today. there aren't many cars to warm up the roads. it is slippery. it is dangerous. speed restrictions in place in delaware. the delaware memorial bridge is down to 35 at this point. keep an eye on the sign. as we come back her live i want to show you what we're dealing with here, as the snow falls, you see from my jacket it is coming down hard and fast out here, you see down here there is a layer of the slush that when we all came out earlier and didn't see snow we did see a slushy mix from all the rain last night. and as jim westoff said the dell dot trucks like this one loaded up with salt the real issue has been they didn't get a chance to put salt down yesterday and what was already there got washed away because of all of the rain we had.

it has been a long couple of days. it didn't help them get prepared for what we're dealing with today and as glenn said it will get real real cold. in a little while, we'll take you back inside. we'll get an update on the state. everyone is doing the best they can can with the situation as we speak. it is a mess out here. if you don't have to go outside on the roads, you should probably avoid trying to do so. it is nasty and keeps getting worse. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. >> thank you very much. a big deal when they got the cots set up inside for them to stay overnight. we'll check in with you in just a bit. this could be the biggest test of the season so far for penndot crews in our area. jean blum joins us. we heard from del dot. what is the condition of the highways at this hour. secondary roads may be one thing. the highways the primary roads. >> primary roads are passable. we're showing a considerable amount of black top on highways.

on the nonexpressways motorists will find various degrees of snow cover. we're treating the roadways salting and continuing to plow and we'll do so throughout the course of the storm and into tonight. >> tim furlong mentioned in dell dot they were saying the problem was it rained first washed away the treatment on the road. do you have the same problem in pennsylvania? >> we did not spray brine either yesterday because of the salt residue would have just been eliminated and removed from the pavement by the rain. so that was not a treatment that was we were able to apply, but we had our crews in by midnight last night, everything was loaded up and as the snow began to fall this morning, we began applying the granular salt. temperatures at that time were working in our favor with temperatures in the high 20s, 30 degrees. so, you know and traffic being relatively light with the relatively smooth morning. there were some incidents on the

highways. but we continue to urge motorists that they have to travel during this course of this storm. just need to give yourself plenty of additional time and reduce your travel speeds. >> glenn was saying the snow is going to likely continue through the afternoon, 2:00 3:00 4:00. the snow continues to fall. as the snow falls, temperatures are going to drop. are you afraid of everything freezing up? >> we'll do our best to try to prevent it. when the snow stops, i think you'll see some continued improvement in the highways. and we'll continue to be plowing, pushing back the snow clearing the gore areas to help prevent that refreezing from occurring. and then we will be having crews on during the overnight hours should we need to apply material, any areas that may freeze. this is a situation where we have temperatures go down to possibly single digits tonight. we'll be working throughout the night to push the snow back as far as possible off the roadways

nbc 10 first alert weather breaking news. >> right now on nbc 10 the snow is coming down across our region and it will continue to fall for hours. this is live look now. i-95 at south philadelphia. the shot is drastically changed since 8:00 a.m. the visibility is low in philadelphia because of the heavy snow that continues to fall. on the ground on the roads, here is a live look at stormforce10 driving around in downingtown, chester county. the roads there, they attempted to treat them. the plows aren't out there as of yet. harry hairston is there, we'll check in with him in a few minutes. over to nbc 10 first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. first, the latest on this storm. how long are we talking here? >> we're talking about it lasting all day. and at some parts of the area even 7:00 8:00 tonight, it is

still going to be snowing. here is a live look at center city from lowe's camera and visibility is bad, but not as bad as it was an hour ago when you couldn't see anything. the streets generally on the wetter side in center city. at least for the most part right now. and the headlines on this first alert weather day, heaviest snow occurring right now across a good portion of the area spreading slowly southward and everything freezes later today and especially tonight once we lose this powerful march sun. a huge zone of snow that is not moving north or south, really. this is representing the way that the radar echoes are moving. the upper level winds are going right along this same area. so it is not moving that way. it is not moving that way. it just keeps riding right along that same train track.

training with thunderstorms. that's what it is doing here with the bands of heavier snow. one of them covering delaware county now. northern new castle county part of philadelphia, farther to the north and that other heavier area in western berks county heading right toward the lehigh valley and eventually upper montgomery and bucks. some of those areas getting more snow than was expected some of these southern areas are going to get less because the rain and snow line has taken so long to go down. it has finally got noon kent county finally getting through most of south jersey. but it has taken a while. visibility tells us how heavy the snow is. quarter mile it is heavy snow. that's what they got in reading. other areas with half mile that's -- i would say it is moderate to heavy snow. mount holly, one quarter mile. that's heavy. wilmington, pretty heavy. and we're starting to drop in south jersey but still not on the heavy side.

what happens during the rest of the afternoon? look at that. it just stays there. 2:00 in the afternoon, not only is it snowing across the entire area, but the blue is getting darker indicating the heavier snow. in delaware and south jersey where you haven't necessarily had as much as we had in pennsylvania you're going to catch up over the next several hours. as it tapers off, farther to the north, but the same time the temperature goes down everywhere. so once we get toward the end of the day, and the sun is setting, and it is getting dark these temperatures, well everything is going to freeze up. don't have a chance to dry out. not going to be much wind. and then because of no wind, once we clear out tonight, the temperature is going to go down to near record levels. record cold tonight after the biggest snowstorm of the season. there we are with those

temperatures in the 20s to the north and west and near freezing farther to the south. we'll continue to update this. get new snow amounts of what is actually falling and keep updating the snow totals if necessary. >> double dose of trouble here tonight, glenn. quick programming note if you're looking for the 10:00 a.m. hour of the "today" show watch that on cozi tv. we have been mentioning all morning long we have been covering this system we have reporters stationed all over the area stormforce10 is one of those tools we use to track the conditions where you are right now, right now nbc 10's harry hairston is live in chester county, those roads out there don't look plowed harry. >> reporter: we're going down devin road if you're familiar with this area around southbound parallel with route 100 and this is one of the secondary streets as you see. completely snow covered, and underneath that snow you have a great deal of ice, we can see

that ice as we're driving, taking -- creeping along to make sure we're safe in this vehicle. we have noticed that in this area there has been a lot of vehicles that have spun out, trying to go up some of the hills of the area including a small plow truck had been stuck on the side of the road. police say they help get him out by calling in a wrecker. as i say, this is one of the of the areas that have not been plowed out. these have been neighborhood areas, folks trying to get in and out of their house, they need to know about these areas because these roads simply not plowed and are very treacherous at this time. also there is some blowing snow in this area. and i don't know if our camera can pick item, but up, but it is affecting our visibility. visibility not what it should be or what it could be to help you out out here. a lot of the roads not plowed. snow covered over the ice, or the ice is snow covered, so you want to be very careful coming out here. we're going to stay out on this

area and crews around some more of the secondary roads enget ss and get back to you and what we're seeing, what some of the areas are that are very bad and some areas that may look better for you. we'll tell you about that later on. back to you. >> this is why we're on tv now, the largest snowfall of the season. we have been spared for the most part this winter but not today. has traffic pick up any in your travels? >> reporter: repeat that i'm sorry. just didn't hear you clearly there. >> no problem, harry. has traffic picked up where you are. primary roads in chester county do you see people heading out the door? >> reporter: no traffic has not picked up. traffic has been very very light. as i said we have seen quite a few cars that have been stranded off to the side of the road. it seems as though some people are taking heed and simply not driving. traffic is -- the roads are just not that good out here.

snow cover over the ice. i think people are listening to us and realizing that now is not the time to take to the streets. >> harry hairston. our coverage continues now. we head to south jersey. nbc 10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg is there live. what are conditions like where you are? >> reporter: well keith, we're in atlantic city along atlantic avenue, at the foot of the atlanta city expressway at the tanger outlets, walk area busy retail area. we have sleet falling here. rain for much of the morning, coming down but in the last 45 minutes to an hour it has changed over to sleet. but also some snowflakes coming down too. you can see all of that sleet, these little ice pellets, accumulating here on the grass. the sidewalks, they're still okay. the roads are still okay here where we are, right along the immediate coastline. but things are different inland

and north of here in the shore region. look at some of the video that my news contacts have been tending me throughout the shore region. this one from toms river in ocean county. it has been snowing there since about 7:00 this morning. i'm told there is about an inch of snow on the ground so far. but the snow has started to come down heavier and it is accumulating more quickly. again, snowing there in toms river since about 7:00 this morning. take a look at some of the video we received a short time ago from barnegat township not far from here where we are in atlantic county. it has been snowing there. and also in the little egg harbor township area stafford township area since about 9:00. i'm told by my contacts that conditions have quickly deteriorated. the same situation in western portions of atlantic county as you head inland. the police chief told me they had two accidents since 7:00 this morning.

in hamilton township the mays landing area i'm told that numerous accidents are reported along 322, the black horse pike as snow -- as the rain and sleet have changed over to snow. i got a picture a short time ago from a police officer in hamilton township that we'll show you in our next live shot just shows an suv that went right off the black horse pike into the tree line because conditions are just getting more and more slick. however, if you go south of here, into cape may county people there are telling me they're just seeing rain. so definitely a mix, depending where you are, here along the coastline and throughout the shore region in ocean, atlantic and cape may counties. the whole mix of conditions snow, sleet, and then rain as you head farther south. we're going to keep tabs on what is happening. i'm going to continue to check with my contacts and bring you the latest later on this morning. live in atlantic city i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news.

>> something to see the rain ponding there on atlantic avenue. good example of the changing conditions as you pointed out. glenn is telling us rest assured, the heavy snow will catch up to the jersey shore in northern delaware. have you talked to officials down there? i imagine the rain at first we're looking on our camera may hinder efforts clearing the roads when snow falls. >> reporter: i'm sorry, keith. >> we'll go back to ted greenberg in just a few minutes down there. you saw the rain in that picture. this one, though this is from our delaware bureau reporter tim furlong, from new castle county. a whole different situation. he was driving in newark. you can see the roads were covered in snow down there. road crews are trying to stay ahead of the storm too. we found this truck spreading salt on the ac expressway just northwest of where ted greenberg was. this is winslow township camden county. if you head out on the highways take it slowly.

a check of travel conditions across the region. last time we talked to jillian mele, the blue route was a problem. how have things changed? >> this is one of my favorite tolls we have here. this is glen dot radar we put over our traffic maps. the glue is indicating all of the snow coverage throughout the area. you can see all of the highways throughout the area that would be affected by this. as we zoom this in with route 422 and 76 and the pennsylvania turnpike, you can see this is what it is looking like right at that interchange. this is on route 422. snowy conditions out there. that's what we're seeing all across the area this morning. and this map is a good indicator of how the roads are really reacting, how the drivers are reacting to the road conditions out there. you see the lines of yellow. that is an indication that things are slow. and then you see the lines of red. that means we're seeing really slow spots there. and keith mentioned the blue route earlier, we had an accident on the northbound side of the blue route right near baltimore pike. that accident has cleared. conditions are still pretty poor

across the area this is 76 near the conshohocken curve, even side streets looks bad. this is route 23 at hollow road. across the area, what we're seeing, in the lehigh valley this is interstate 78 near cedar crest boulevard. this morning, we didn't have a morning rush because we didn't have the normal volume on the roads we're used to seeing. that's good as you can see, the conditions have started to rapidly change throughout the morning. if you don't have to head out and shouldn't on 95, same situation there in delaware that's what it is looking like. for drivers in new jersey 295, route 168, for the most part on 295, the roads looked wet. right now you see that snow is coming down. you see it in our cameras, the roads are going to be slippery. >> thank you very much. you know the rain is changing to sleet in atlantic city as ted greenberg just reported moving to philadelphia though heavy snow is causing for low visibility. live picture of i-95 and south philadelphia. traffic moving smoothly as jillian mentioned. not many people outside, they're

know, we're joined by mary flannery the public affairs manager for philadelphia international airport. good morning mary. thank you for taking the time to talk to us. >> good morning, keith. how are you doing? >> we're doing well. we know there are delays out there. let's talk about this though. any cancellations because of this system? >> actually there are hundreds of cancellations. the delays are not so many because there were so many cancellations announced last night and today. cancellations are mounting through the day as the airlines decide on their own operations. and i'm look at my window and it is really coming down heavy right now. there are some flights that are operating this morning. if you were going to san juan you got out. so the caribbean flights got out. the arrivals from europe are on track right now to arrive this afternoon. but what we're encouraging people to do is of course check with their own airline or you can go to our website. >> and mary what is worse here? the visibility is really low because of the heavy snow in

philadelphia. is it the visibility or the snow that is falling? >> for the airport, it is the snow that is falling. visibility is fine. we can deal with that. we're working hard, our crews are working hard to keep our two remaining runways open. so we are plowing and grooming to clear the snow off runways. >> all right, mary flannery joining us. hundreds of cancellations out there. she mentioned, go check out the website or call the number 1-800-phl-gate, on your screen now. thank you so much for your time. we'll check out other news happening now. police looking for a driver and a passenger after an suv crashed into a bank in north philadelphia. nbc 10 was on the scene at broad and jefferson. that's where the cadillac suv plowed into the entrance of the united bank. police say the suv hit a car before smashing into the bank around 1:40 this morning. no one was hurt.

and nbc 10s with on the was on the scene of a police investigation in west norton township. we learned a child there was taken to the hospital. we're making calls to police to find out more details. use the nbc 10 app and stay with nbc 10 for updates. this just in to nbc 10. the delaware river port authority has just released the dash cam video of the moment after this tanker truck explosion last week in camden county. look at these images. you can see the flames thick black smoke. sources told nbc 10 the driver admitted to police that he may have been going too fast when his gas tanker overturned and exploded in pennsauken on february 23rd. sources also say the driver was upset that police subpoenaed his cell phone records to see if he was texting or talking on the phone. so far authorities have not filed charges, but have 30 days to do so. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist

glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> well, we're in the middle of the biggest snowstorm of the season. now last winter we had had three storms of over 10 inches. and this winter most of our storms have been fairly small. 4.8 is the biggest. noon, it is still heavy snow. by 3:00 it is tapering off somewhat. and then it is ending at least in philadelphia area by 6:00. look at that temperature, 22 degrees. very unusual type of day. especially for march. temperatures don't fall during the day in march very often. look at the size of this area of snow. it is huge. and it is not really moving very much. there is the upper flow right along the same area. there is no reason for anything to move. so pockets of heavy snow one right down near the airport at the moment. there is that heavier back that was in berks county right over

lehigh valley again and had to up the snow totals there and heavier bands starting to come across delaware and south jersey. you get your share of snow. i know it is coming in later. but it is going to end later. there is still plenty of snow to go. look at this. this whole area moving up the same way. this is a very unusual type of pattern and spreading to the south, very slowly. that's why you got hour after hour after hour of this. visibility tells us how heavy the snow is. reading again, very heavy, quarter mile half mile visibility considered fairly heavy. you go outside with half mile visibility, you would tell your neighbor, that's pretty heavy snow. wilmington, half mile philly half mile mount holly, quarter. that's heavy. northeast philly a half mile. and then there is the forecast.

the computer models showing that even by 3:00 we still have snow in doylestown and pottstown. the heavy snow though shifts to the south. so delaware and south jersey all right, you're getting pounded at 3:00 in the afternoon. and at 4:00 in the afternoon, meanwhile, everybody else's temperatures are going down as the snow is tapering off. finally by 6:00. and now we're starting to see the heavier snow move off shore. and then what do we have after this? a record cold night. 10 degrees in philadelphia. and down to about 3 in some of the suburbs. heeding records, some of them set back in the 1800s. 23 now in reading. and in allentown, 25 quakertown quakertown, doylestown, coatesville and especially when that strong march sun goes back down over the horizon, those

temperatures are going to help ice everything up tonight. so you may want to try to get rid of as much as you can in the driveway and sidewalks, because it is going to be so much harder tomorrow morning. and you want to go out this and shovel when it is 3 degrees? i wouldn't want to do that. 25 in kennett square and coatesville right now. 29 in swedesboro. and washington township. 28 in trenton. so we have temperatures below freezing over a good bit of the area now. now southern half of delaware extreme south jersey still 32 a little above, snowflakes are melting, which is the same sort of thing that happened in the philadelphia area earlier today. and for those of you in philly who have friends or relatives, let's say cape may, see the snowflakes falling and melting, you can call them up and tell them, yeah ours started like that too. it is not like that now. the snow heavy at times, gradually ending north to south

as temperatures fall to 22 to 25. by 6:00 tonight and by tonight, down to 10 in the philadelphia area and down to 3 in some of the colder suburbs. now, it is going to stay bitter cold during the day tomorrow. sunny, 27 degrees, bitter cold saturday morning and then after that, we'll breathe a sigh of relief. it is going to feel more like spring next week. we're not going to have this kind of stuff next week. and we may actually have a day or two of 50 degrees. >> can't even see out there. this is from camden across the delaware river. the visibility is that low. you can only imagine what happens on the roadways. >> and we have a widespread area that is looking like this. very often you have a couple of places with the heavy snow and other places with light snow. others with none at all. it is a very wide area that is covered and like you just saw, it is not moving. so that's why we have hour after

hour after hour of this. this morning, when it was not snowing, just raining, 36 degrees, and snow lovers are really disappointed. but i told them be patient. don't be fooled. this is a marathon, not a sprint this type of storm. >> yesterday, in the afternoon meeting, you mensed there was edyou mentioned there were two types of storms type a and type b, but this is unusual. >> type a form over the gulf of mexico and move up our way, contain a lot of moisture. those are generally the easiest ones to predict. the '96 blizzard was like that. the other ones develop right along the east coast, nor'easters and they can be real difficult. but also have a lot of wind. this one has got no wind. and this is just a front that is sagging southward. normally if we're in the 40s, then the cold front comes through, it drys out. >> sure. >> not this time.

this is an unusual pattern. and there has been tremendous snow with this same system from texas, now all the way into new england. louisville, kentucky over a foot of snow overnight last night. and, of course stranded on highways down there. >> talking about changing conditions too. we looked at northern delaware you look at parts of atlantic county, the jersey shore. they're seeing rain changing to sleet. you say rest assured, though they'll catch up. >> yeah. this whole system is slowly moving south. well, it has got to go down toward atlantic city and cape may and southern delaware. it is going to happen. just taking a long time. and the fact that it is taking so long that is why the lehigh valley, for example, in berks county are getting more snow than what was expected. just raised warnings for the lehigh valley. we're not out earlier because this thing is moving so slowly. >> the snow could keep falling for four five 6:00 and then

we're not even done. then the record cold to contend with. 10 degrees, 3 degrees in some places. >> i can't imagine this pattern in january. it is hard to get to 3 degrees in march. that's why it is a record. >> thank you very much, glenn. what impact is the storm having on amtrak. we have been talking mass transit too. listen to this we're joined on the phone by craig shoals from amtrak. he'll tell us a little bit more about conditions on the rails. what are you seeing so far? any cancellations, delays and departures? >> well, we have some canceled trains today. we're running fewer trains than we would on a typical thursday. but the good news is the trains that are out there, and running, they're doing okay. we had some minor delays 15 30 minutes in most cases. weather related issues. but for the most part everything that is out there is running pretty well.
