gone down somewhere in the french alps. bill neely is in london. anything more you can add? >> yes, the fact that it has gone down in the french alps is not good. it's about 9,000 feet up with few roads leading to it. 142 passengers on board, two pilots and four crew. i suppose from a rescuer's point of view that's very, very difficult terrain. at the moment it was not far into the flight from barcelona to d uss eldorf when it crashed. it is an airliner that is a subsidiary of the german airliner lufstanza. german wings is a low cost

airliner. they were heading back probably from vacation in barcelona. details are sketchy at the moment. the weather seemed to be fine. it was cloudy with just light wind. the pilot did send an sus urks srksstus urks srkss srkssus-s sos message, but rescue teams are on the way. it is an inaccessible area. from a rescue point of view that's not good. >> bill thank you very much. >> tom costello covers aviation. you are just getting the details as we are. talk about this plane. we put the map up and it started in barcelona on the way to d uss eldorf. this looks like about the midway point or less. >> that's concerning. the vast majority of incidents involving fatal or nonfatal

crashes for take off and landing, it's rare to have something happen in-flight. you will have the authorities looking at all probabilities here. the airbus 820 is a work horse of a plane. it is flown around the world and built in europe but flown heavily here in the u.s. by u.s. airways and american airlines and united and others. this is a very reliable plane and what we call a fly by wire plane. it is heavily automated with a lot of computer assistance and a lot of back up systems helping the pilot to fly the plane. it is not the old 737 pulley system. this is a sophisticated aircraft. what happened is anybody's guess. >> the last crash of an a-320 that we can find was air asia flight 8501 back in december of

20 freezing rain from surabaya to singapore. did we find out what caused that plane to go down? >> off the top of my head i don't know. this plane is just very, very commonly flown around the world and i have been to the airbus factories in france and they will tell you we build planes for all of the world to fly, not just the best and the brightest that come out of the world air forces. we build them for pilot who is may not be topical ber. this is concerning. >> he may have gotten a distress call. >> they had an incident of some sort. whether it was -- my concern is that a single engine failure will generally not bring down an aircraft these days. you would have to be looking at

"new york times." angelina jolie revealing she had preventive surgery to remove her ovaries after doctors found a sign of early cancer. hoda kotb reports. >> ovarian cancer kills about 14,000 women every year. 20,000 women were diagnosed. angelina jolie chose another preventive surgery and that may surprise people. she wanted to share with people to let people know they have options. in an op ed in this morning's "new york times," she writes she chose to have her ovaries and falopian tubes removed last week to reduce her chance of getting cancer. the 39-year-old oscar winner revealed she had a double mastectomy after losing her mother to ovarian cancer in

2007. >> after losing my mom to these issues i'm grateful for it and moved by the kind support from people. really very grateful. >> two week ago the results revealed possible early signs of ovarian cancer. she writes i went to see the surgeon who treated my mother ask she teared up when you saw me. you look just like her. i broke down and we smile and agreed we were there to deal with any problem. let's get on with it. >> she is a movie star and her journey of decision making is agonizing and fear and all women struggle with that any time they hear a possibility of a disease. in her case a severe cancer generations of cancer i can understand why she did it. >> while the surgery was less complex than the double mastectomy the results put her into forced menopause. >> i will not be able to have

more children and i expect physical changes, but i feel at ease with whatever will come. not because i am strong because this is part of wife. she called her husband and father of her six children brad pitt. >> i called my husband in france. the beautiful thing about such moments is that there is so much clarity. jolie acknowledges while it's impossible to remove the risk of getting cancer she remains hopeful about her health and future. >> a lot of women might be thinking about that decision and you can check with your doctor but you can see why it made sense for her with her mom and her children. >> this was her choice and others have different choices. we will look at this in the next half hour with a medical doctor. the legal battle may be far from over at the university of virginia. rolling stone had apologized for

their reporting and now police say there is no evidence to back up the original claims. gabe gutierrez is in chaf lotsville. >> reporter: they spoke with about 70 people during the investigation that lasted several months that has been suspended, but not closed. police can't rule out something terrible happened, but just not what was described. the university accused of gang rape is exploring legal options saying rolling stone sought to turn fiction into fact is shameful. >> can i say that nothing happened? no. we found no evidence to support the allegations. >> those allegations published in the rolling stone magazine. a woman identified as jackie claiming she was sexually assaulted in 2012. >> there is a chance the entire thing is false. >> this is one of the jackie's former friends.

>> jackie's accountable has been in question for a long time. they called in the chief saying he couldn't find evidence either that was no big surprise. >> in april of last year jackie's roommate removed broken glass from her face in a separate assault, but the roommate denies that. jackie said he called her mother but there was no evidence about that call. >> it's never been just about the details of jackie's story. there hundreds of other survivors and we want to make sure we have as few in the future as we can. >> the investigation confirms that the university provided support and care to a student in need. but now some advocates worry it will be tougher for future victims. >> this is a bad day for all rape victims. it will be harder for the victims to be believed when they are raped. >> reporter: the attorney for jackie declined to comment.

tuesday morning, the 24th day of march, 2015. we start with breaking news out of france where a germanwings passenger liner to dusseldorf germany has crashed. >> the french president said he believings it is likely that none of the 148 people on board has survived. >> bill neely is in london. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. that will be difficult news for the people of france to swallow. hollande said no survivors

expected. 148 people on board, 142 passengers and the two pilots and four crew are thought to have died. it crashed in a very mountainous area 9,000 feet and very middle road access. rescuers will have a tough time getting to that area. even if there were to be survivors, it would be hard to access them. we are learning a few more details about the flight. it was about a quarter of the way into its flight from barcelona to dusseldorf. the pilot did accepted a distress call. a 7700 sos. it was flying at 38,000 feet. the decent was fairly normal. it was dropping at a rate of 3,000 to 4,000 feet a minute. that would be normal for an approach to an airport. there were airports around nice

and marseille. many ski resorts. the pilot did not have time to get any of those and it crashed in the middle of the french alps. hollande said no survivors. back to you. >> bill neely in london reporting on breaking news that we have been covering for the last half hour or so. >> we will continue to follow it. new twists on the robert durst case. he was denied bail in louisiana and we are learn being what he was doing according to police in the days before his arrest. we will talk to his defense attorney in a moment. first let's go to stephanie goss in new orleans for us. what can you tell us? >> reporter: prosecutors revealed that they had him under surveillance in the days leading up to his arrest. monitoring his cell phone which he had stopped using. they may never have found himd if he had not phoned in for voice mail twice in his hotel in

new orleans. >> even his lawyer admitted he was unlikely to get bail on the two weapons charges, and he didn't. >> i didn't have any hope at all that the judge would set a bail bond. we are not surprised. >> durst jumped bail in texas in 2001 after being accused of murdering his neighbor and later found not guilty of the charge. in the documentary the jinx he said this about bail. >> goodbye $250,000 and goodbye jail. i'm out. >> on monday prosecutors revealed in detail what police found after durst's arrest. a flesh mask with salt and pepper hair not for trick or treating. the money, mr. $42,000 in the room with another $117,000 waiting to be picked up. a mab of the gulf coast

her body has never been found. he has always insisted he knows nothing about his wife's disappearance. his court date is next thursday. his head was shaven with a scar visible. his lawyers say he is recovering for brain surgery. >> i will stake it steph 18. let's go to his defense attorney. good morning to you, sir. >> good morning. >> you heard our reporter describe him as frail and thin and he had been held in a mental health part of the jail on suicide watch according to police. let's get one thing out of the way. in your view is he competent to stand trial and go through the legal proceedings or will you be making a claim that he is not fit to do so? >> i believe he is competent. he is not in good health. he has very serious health

problems but he is competent. >> what about his mental health and the notion of being on suicide watch? >> he is not suicidal. frankly he is relieved to be able to finally get a chance to get into court on all these rumors that have been swirling around. if we can just get to court in california however we are stuck here in louisiana. it's a nice place to be stuck, but the relatively minor charges compared to the accusation of the murder of susan berman. we top the get to california and try the case. >> i want to talk about the california case in a second but first the bail hearing. you knew your client was not going to be able to post bail. on the other hand he was found with a new cell phone and a fake id and a mask and a gun and a map of the gulf coast including cuba. can you explain that? >> yeah. we have been fighting for

discovery since he was arrested. discovery is when the prosecutors are required to give you the evidence and tell you what the evidence is. until yesterday when we had a hearing, we just didn't have anything. >> now you know. what do you make of it? >> we know what they are claiming. it's evidence. we will have to litigate it and whether it's admissible at all here in louisiana. if it's not admissible in louisiana i don't know that it's going to be in california. we are doing what lawyers do. we get into court and ask for the evidence. >> you mentioned the case in california and suggested that the evidence there is rather thin and based on the documentary, that may be the case. let's take the evidence that we are aware of because of this documentary. first that letter. bob durst acknowledges was sent by the killer. whoever killed susan berman.

the other written by him and the handwriting looks so similar. what is your argument? >> i'm not going to try the case on the "today" show or any other public forum other than in court. i'm not going to discuss that. we will be doing what lawyers do. try the case in court. if we have to try a part of it here in louisiana, well we have to do that. but really we need to get to california where the -- what i think happened is they jumped the gun because of the television show. >> a couple quick things. i know you don't want to get into the evidence. are you concerned about the alleged confession caught on tape? >> i told you i'm not going to discuss the evidence but that's not a confession. >> i know as his lawyer you likely advised him not to

at a high risk, she had a preventive mastectomy after she found out she carried a mutation in a gene. part of the op ed she said it's not possible on to remove all risk. i remain prone to cancer. i will look for natural ways to strengthen my immune system. i know my children will never have to say mom died of ovarian cancer. she went on to say quickly, regardless of the hormone replacements, i'm now in menopause and i will not have any more children and i expect physical changes but i feel at ease with whatever will come not because i am strong, but it's part of and nothing to be feared. her mother died at age 56 and her aunt died of breast cancer. >> it's powerful that she talks about women's health something that has been stigmatized in the

past and uses her voice to talk about what she has gone through. it makes other women not feel so alone. >> we will talk about this more from a doctor to talk about the choices. it has to be a frightening thought. you are so prone to something that you have to do this. it's a choice that a lot of women have to make that decision every day. >> this is an education in addition learning more about being resilient. you have children and you want to be there and see your grandchildren and all of these things that you hope will happen in one's life but it's also the medical options available to other women who face the same decision. >> talking about women, a classic movie, pretty woman which i love. there pretty women in it. thank you, thank you. it's the 25th anniversary. >> that doesn't seem possible.

we will call her dr. debbie. she said it was okay. an assistant professor at the school of medicine. good to see you both. let's start off with the news breaking with angelina jolie. she wrote the op ed piece with preventive surgery. what is this procedure? how dangerous is it or not? why did she do it? >> it's not so much that the surgery is dangerous per se, but unlike the removal of the breasts, that's very visible. this is invisible. it's inside, but much more impactful on health. when you have the ovaries removed, you are menopausal. you are post menopausal after the surgery. she had genetic markers for breast and ovaries and a strong

family history. this is a big move on her part, but her thinking was i'm at risk for ovarian cancer unless i do this. she had tests with increased inflammation. that suggested that risk was increasing. >> would there be other options? >> there. there forms of hormonal treatment and frequent medical follow-up. if ovarian cancer develops we don't have effective treatments and no other option is as decisive as this one. >> genetic testing is a preventable method. how can we know if it really works? is it good? >> they can tell you about the risk of developing cancer. it can't tell you for sure. she has a mutation. that doesn't mean she would definitely get it, but it increases the risk. one of the important things is after she had her double mastectomy, she wrote her piece

and the number of women who got evaluated doubled. it doesn't mean they have to have surgery, but to talk about the options and risks. when you think about how many lives that saves. hopefully this will do the same. >> talking about it is good. >> we need to know the reliability of the test and it's good and there has to be something you can do with the information. in this case there was. >> let's go to antibiotics. doctors are prescribing them and don't know what they are looking for. there is a blood test to help with this. >> the data is there and most of us if we have symptoms, we want to get something. the problem with that is if people get antibiotics they don't work against viruses. you are healing but the problem is that if you take antibiotics unnecessarily and the bacteria can develop resistance. they fight the antibiotics in

the future. they stop working in the future. >> when will we see this test? >> what they have done is used a bunch of tests that are available and combined them to say if you have this pattern, it's bacterial and you don't need antibiotics. we were talking about the fact that this decision is made by doctors and patients tens of thousands of times every day. i'm coughing and do i need antibiotics. unless this is easy and inexpensive will it be ready for prime time. i don't know what the cost will be. there is a strategy and if you think you might need an antibiotic, don't fill it unless. that's a close upon approximatation to what this test will give us. >> this is it. allergy season. every year for the last five years, this is the worst allergy season ever.

your head is going to explode. there will be mucous everywhere. >> you know who i blame? you. we had a terrible winder and we get the allergies. >> how bad is this season? >> it's hard to know for sure, but with the amount of snow it's i wet winter it will be worse. >> yes! >> it's al's fault. >> do we do anything to prepare? >> if you are prone to allergies you might start anti-histamines and decongest ants earlier. it used to be by injection but it's under the tongue. it will be bad. >> you can look at your home. you can take out the heating and the ac. when you change there is a lot of dust and mold that accumulates. when you switch, you blow that out. it's penitentiary to clean those things. >> now i will go take some medicine.

finding any survivors that plane. act ing difficult enough to find the plane itself in some of europe's most mountainous terrain. most of those on board were either spanish, germany, gn, or turkish. for the cause of the the moment, that's a complete mystery. it's a tgedy and a search on the most rugged terrain. this is the remote area of the french alps where the ane with 150 people on board went down less than an hour into a f to germany. the crash site is said to be a 2 1/2-hour hike from the neare village. this is the germanwings plane, 24 years old, an airbus 320 flying at an altitude of 38,00 feet when it began what ap to be a co edled s altitude dropped local time the pial.

slams into a mountain. why d this plane descend in a on from 3800 feet all the way down to 3,000 tos it on auto pilot? was the crew incapacitated? was there a pressure problem or a fire or smoke in the plane? these are all of the issues that investigators are looking at right now. clearly, the priority is going to be getting those black boxes, the cockpit voice and data recorders recorders. the airbus a-320, by the way, is a workhorse of a plane. it is flown around the world, here in the united states by u.s. airways, american airlines, united. very commonly flown in europe, asia, latin america, and asia. more than 6,000 a-320s have been built since they were first rolling off the line. they're really all over the world. it's a very highly sophisticated, automated airplane with multiple back-up systems. for something to go wrong and create a situation in which the

fallopian tubes because of her risk for cancer. what she did in the two years is basically followed appropriate surveillance. that means doing pelvic ultrasounds once or twice a year. getting a blood test. she had very close follow-up with her doctors who made the recommendation to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed. >> some people have a family history of this type of cancer. should they look into that possibility? >> there are a few different syndromes that carry a risk of ovarian cancer. the one that we're specifically talking about is the breast and ovarian hereditary cancer syndromes. if you have a positive history of breast cancer in your family you should certainly be tested. but the number is quite low. it's less than 1% in the general

population. >> one of the side effects is it onsets menopause. >> exactly. >> why are women so terrified of menopause -- >> it's a natural part of getting older, menopause is. but menopause is associated with two significant risks and that is cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. >> you can do things about that. >> absolutely. most women are candidates for hormone replacement therapy as she is doing. >> we started off by talking about how women gain weight as you get older. who should be checked out whose thyroid should be checked? >> anyone who's pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant should get tested. because that can cause pregnancy complications.

anyone with symptoms of either a low-functioning thyroid or a high-functioning thyroid -- >> what are those symptoms? >> think about the thyroid gland is kind of the metabolic center of your body. when it's running low you feel sluggish, you feel tired, you gain weight, you're cold all the time your hair and skin are dry. when it's too high, it's the opposite. you get hot really quickly. you might be losing weight might have diarrhea. i screen for thyroid all the time. i'm a rheumatologist. i tend to not want to screen in people who are not showing any symptoms. and that's the basis of the task force recommendation. they found no evidence for or against screening. but it actually reduces mortality in the end. the value of the screening test is that you're actually making a meaningful change in someone's life. they found no evidence to suggest that. the problem is that without symptoms, abnormal blood tests

at the time of this crash. they just walked out of the front room and into the kitchen right before that bus came crashing through the front door. one neighbor describes the condition of the driver after he had gotten off the bus. a live look at that bus in front of the house now. >> driver was absolutely lethargic. had no recollection what so ever. said he completely blockacked out. said he blocked out, didn't remember anything. but first concern the driver had, he asked are all the children okay? >> and there were 12 kids on the bus from st. helena school in blue bell. they were not hurt. the driver is in the hospital but we don't know his condition right now. this accident happened at bensalem bucks county. a 28-year-old woman was walking on nields road when she was hit by two vehicles heading west on street road. investigators say she was crossing on a red light. her identity has in the been released. one driver stopped. the second driver was questioned at her home. she told officers she didn't
