questions facing investigators now. why did the pilot leave the cockpit and why was he then reportedly locked out? >> and one thing that is being ruled out, a midair explosion. investigators are also saying at this point the crash does not appear to be linked to deep pressurization. >> and this morning we are hearing from friends of the three americans who died. let's get right to nbc's keir simmons. he's in france this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah good morning. this has people absolutely shocked here as yet unconfirmed reports that one of the pilots of the plane that flew into the alps mountain behind me here was locked out of that cockpit as the plane descended. for days we were trying to physical out why this a-320 flew into the range. do we now have part of the answer? the urgent focus this morning. reports that one pilot was outside the cockpit when the german wings airliner mulligan its devastating descent. the news overnight has people

stunned. >> enormous and there's a lot of speculation riding on germany what's going ought in the cockpit. >> reporter: the force of the crash makes debris in the mountain a huge challenge. according to an investigation source quoted by a french news agency and the "new york times," the badly damaged flight recorder indicates that first the cockpit door opened and closed. then a knocking was heard. perhaps one of the two pilots banging on the door trying to get back if as the plane went down. the airline owned by lufthansa has not confirmed the claim. >> we cannot understand how an experienced lufthansa pilot was involved in such a terrible exodus. >> reporter: another pilot who flew over the crash site just minutes after the a-320 disappeared from radar told nbc news visibility was clear.

>> if the pilot was alive he'd see the mountain right in front of him, very very difficult for him. >> reporter: but we know more this morning about how the tragedy here has touched american families. emily selkie and her mother yvonne from virginia were killed. on cnn, friends remember them as loving. >> two amazing loving people who were left behind friends and family who love and miss them a lot. >> reporter: emily studied the music industry at drexel university. others say she always put others before herself and care deeply for all those in her life. this morning, lufthansa is refusing to identify the pilot and co pilot. it says the pilot had 66,000 hours of flying experience. the co-pilot has 630 hours. he had joined a german wings the airline from a training but, matt you know if these reports turn out to be true you just shudder to think what it must

have been like in the final minutes on that plane. >> if are you a passenger one of the pilots trying to get into the cockpit, that couldn't have been much good. let's bring in greg fife and nbc's tom costello who covers aviation for us. tom, this idea that a cockpit leaves the -- pilot leaves the cockpit, isn't it policy or protocol that a member of the flight staff goes in to replace that pilot? >> that's right t. flight attendant usually goes into the cockpit and stands there with the pilot who is flying the plane so that when the pilot who is left to go to the restroom comes back that flight attendant can verify who it is that wants to get back into the door usually through a pooem peep hole in the door. we don't know that protocol was followed in germany, assuming it was in this particular case the question is what happened to that flight attendant, why wasn't he or she able get back

into the cockpit? was there a criminal act here? we don't know. for a captain to have 6,000 hours, that itself not a lot of experience for a captain and for a first officer to have 30 hours. in the united states you need 1,500 hours to be a certified first officer on a commercial flight. so these levels of experience are fought great levels of experience. >> tom real quickly, if there was no flight attendant with the remaining pilot, how easy is it for the pilot to override that code panel that would allow that other pilot to regain access on the cockpit? >> reporter: on the airbus 320, there is a key panel on the outside the pilot punches in a code to get into the cockpit. but inside the cockpit, whoever is in there can, in fact override that and essentially lock somebody out t. reason they do that is to prevent a terrorist from getting in of course in a situation like this you may have exactly the wrong impact. >> greg let's bring you in right now. i know you think it's still very early and we shouldn't jump to

any conclusions. is it unusual at all for one pilot to leave the cockpit as that plane reaches its cruising altitude of 38,000 feet? >> reporter: matt that would have been a normal place for a pilot to lead because the airplane would have been stable and crews fright that's a normal work load time period. one or both of the flight crew members will lead the cockpit, leave the cockpit, not simultaneously but in that work load period. in the particular instance as tom brought up there was a way to get back into the cockpit. so it is evident whoever remained in the cockpit had to have intentionally moved that switch to disarm the keypad and allow access back into the cockpit. >> and the fact that the pilot who was locked out first gently knocks on the door to regain access to the cockpit eliminates a lot of things like massive decompression or an incredible mech nextal failure, doesn't it? >> absolutely. because there was no erratic

movement of the aircraft and, in fact if this pilot had gone incapacitated and accidentally hit the side stick controller or the auto flight system had disengaged there are oral warnings. so investigators will be listening to whatever oral warnings may have been recorded on the cockpit voice record tore see if there is anything unusual that may have taken place that could either corroborate incompasstation or intentional? >> incompasstation, you wouldn't override the emergency code panel. >> reporter: absolutely. those are the logical steps investigators will have to take. because there would have been no reason to lock anybody out of that cockpit if there was an mortgages. >> thank you both. >> keep on that. meantime we are following another big story the deadly and destructive tornadoes in parts of the south. at least one person has died in oklahoma where mortgages crews

have been busy throughout this nate gabe gutierrez is there. what are you seeing there? >> reporter: this used to be a donut shop. last night tens of thousands of people are without power here in oklahoma. this morning, emergency crews will spend the morning assessing the damage. >> whoa islam. >> oh dear lord. >> reporter: terrifying moments wednesday night as storm chasers cap cured this tornado barreling towards west springs. one person was killed and at least three others injured in a mobile home park ravaged by the severe weather. >> i just ran. i don't know where i was running to pan. >> reporter: in tulsa, a possible tornado ripped through a jim face innium with 60 to 70 people inside. firefighters rushing young girls

to safety. amazingly, they all escaped. no one was seriously hurt. >> reporter: the rain is still going good as far as the rotation it slowed down a bit. >> reporter: as the storms pred across oklahoma travelers frantically huddled at the tulsa airport. further south a twister caused damage in moore the same place where a massive tornado in 2013 killed 24 people and injured more than 300. >> nothing compared to may 20th. not in comparison from size to damage injuries nothing compared to that day. >> it's right here. >> reporter: interstate 35 was closed through moore when they said they were littering the freeway if both directions. but the mayor of moore says it could have been worse. >> it's just one of those things that happens. like i zell tell people we're the center of the universe this is where things happen. fortunately, there is no deaths with this. we had very few injuries. >> here in tornado alley, it had been a quiet season so far.

today several school districts in the area are closed. again, here in oklahoma tens of to us of people are still without power. al. >> it could be a long season thank you so much. what's ham righthappening right now? not tornado producers, cincinnati you will be looking alt the showers and thunderstorms coming up. we will be watching this all push to the north and east. so it's going to get into memphis, tennessee, cincinnati ohio. as the morning wears on we expect showers and thunderstorms for nashville. sharply cooler tomorrow behind the system snow into parts of michigan. syracuse new york rain and snow one to three inches of snow. then as we get into early tomorrow the rain moves away. we will get a few more showers, but what we are looking at much cooler air coming in guy, over the next 24 hours here in the northeast. where out west as we'll see in the next half hour temperatures 10 to 30 degrees above average. >> we will check with you in a few minutes.

meantime u.s. army sergeant bowe bergdahl is facing the possibility of life if prison. he abandoned his post by the taliban for five years. now, he is being charged with desertion. nbc's jim miklazewski is at the pentagon good morning to you. >> good morning, matt an army general has pretty much thrown the book at bowe bergdahl a stark reminder of how serious it is to abandon your post under any circumstances in the middle of a war zone. after five years in taliban captivity, sergeant beau derg call's full is again if question. he's combharnl he's been charged with desertion, it could lead to life imprisonment for leaving his fellow soldiers. >> i'm enlighted, actually. i wasn't sure we would ever get to this point. >> reporter: her son darren was in bergdahl's unit later killed and she believes bergdahl's

actions contributed to her son's death. >> i don't think he should have anything less tan life if federal prison. >> reporter: a fellow soldier said there was no doubt he deserted. >> he left his weapon behind and it was clear he wasn't coming back. >> reporter: bergdahl was held captive appearing under duress an american soldier and propaganda tool for the taliban. >> this war isn't worse, the waste of huh pan life. >> reporter: his release kicked up a political firestorm the obama administration released five high valued taliban prisoners in exchange for bergdahl. republicans again accused the president of negotiating with terrorists. >> they were traded for bergdahl who deserted his men while these individuals were traded. i think this was a bad decision. it was also in my opinion a

violation of the law. >> reporter: bergdahl's lawyer is eager to have derg call tell his side of the story in military court. >> people will learn many things that they have not yet been privy too about sergeant bergdahl's conduct, his motivation. his intentions as waelz the details of his captivity at the hands of the taliban for nearly five years. >> reporter: now, bergdahl could be offered a plea deal to avoid any jail time. but one official familiar with the investigation tells nbc news there was no indication that bergdahl posed any tlerkts held any malice towards the u.s. but he's instead described as just one really mixed up kid who made a very bad mistake. matt. >> all right, jim miklazewski at the pentagon. thank you very much. savannah. okay matt tanks, that is just one story that has the attention of mitt romney the former republican presidential candidate recently entertained a third white house run earlier

this year. he joined us now having decided not to. good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. >> let's start with the bowe bergdahl case. first of all, you seen he isn't maybe court marshalled. do you agree with that? do you think he should have been? >> well if he deserted his post that's appropriate for military justice. >> if a court marshall goes forward and he were convicted, do you think this is someone who should spend time in a military brick? >> if it were a severe setting, where he abandoned his post and put other members of the military at risk then of course a prison term is something that has to be contemplated. >> let me ask you about the decision that the president made to trade five taliban prisoners for bowe bergdahl. it was controversial. the president presumably knew the circumstance of beau bergdahl leaving his post. he said though leave no soldier on the battlefield. iffed that had been you in the oval office would you have made that conflicting call? >> there are two conflicting

principless here. one is leave no one behind. the other is don't negotiate with terrorists. in a setting like this congress said you must have the president go to congress. he didn't do that he violate aid gen the law. but number two the real question for me is do the people being released represent a threat to american lives in the future. in this case i believe i do. as a result i was critical at the time of the exchange and continue to be critical. >> it doesn't sound like you would have made the trade. >> i don't think i would have made the trade. >> ted cruz is in the republican race this year. he is someone you have praised for his oratoriccal skill. the reason he says they're fought conservative enough. >> that's the case he takes. i believe everybody expresses their own views on issue, everybody choose which views they align with and choose that nominee. ted cruz will make his case. we'll have ten or 12 other

people making their cases. we will have exciting debates. i think the democratic debates will be quiet with hillary clinton and people that want to be her vp. i think ted cruz and a whole group of folks represents an interesting thought within the republican party. we'll see who gets the prize. >> so you don't take personal offense that he's basically suggesting the reason republicans didn't win, you didn't win in 2012 because you were to use his word "mushy"? . >> i made lot of mistake, i'm a big target. i'm happy to have people express their views about why i lost but that's a decision that will be made by republican voters as to who our nominee ought to be. ted is a legitimate contender, obviously, a skilled orotoator. we have other skilled contenders in the race. >> you said it's time for a next generation republican leader quote, not as well known as you are, who is just getting started and had not yet had the opportunity to take their

message across the country. i have to say, governor that does not sound like governor jeb bush. is that what you meant? >> no, i'm talking about the next political generation. i along with a few other people ran in the last contest and i was not successful and my thought was, we need a new face someone yet fought defined in the public's mind. jeb bush is one of those new faces. i want to hear what he has to say and marco has to say and chris christ tee and other and others. why conservatives are better helping middle class and poor people do better in this country. >> would you consider being one of these nominee's vice presidents? >> i don't think anyone wants to be a vp. >> not a good job? >> i won't say the things that have been said about this job. i'm looking to serve these people to be president. >> that sound like a no to me. let's talk about your next career. boxing champion you are taking

thousands of people. former congressman jesse jackson, jr., he will now head to a halfway house in washington and serve the final year of a two-and-a-half year sentence for illegally spending his campaign funds. >> all right. let us begin this half hour though, with a bizarre story in california a. woman reportedly abducted found safe and sound. now police believe it was all an elaborate hoax. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is here with more on that. >> good morning, this is one out of the san francisco bay area. the reported kidnapping of denise hoskins and a frantic search. police are now calling it a wild goose chase and hoskins is once again, no where to be found. >> the statement that mr. quinn provided was such an incredible story, we initially had a hard time believing it. >> reporter: that was the reaction from police in villejo, california overnight after denise hoskins was found safe

some 400 miles from where investigators were looking for her. >> i was happy to hear she was alive and safe and home. >> reporter: she went missing monday her live-in boyfriend saying an intruder came into his home and kidnapped her and demanded a $85,000 ransom. he didn't report it for hours. he received an e-mail from someone claiming to be her with audio of her believing to be huskins. this morning, police are no longer calling denise huskins or her boyfriend a witness to a crime. >> i can tell you that our investigation has concluded that none of the claims has been substantiated. >> reporter: lasted out for wasting the department's time and money. >> devoting all of our resources, 24 hours a day on what i will classify as a wild goose case. >> reporter: and now a few twist as huckins appears to have gone

seymour rides chick. 7-year-old ryder rutledge updated the calfs. by 9 they'll both be on junior mini bull. >> show me the position. that's it. that's pretty impressive. these rough riders are some of the toughest kid in the world. 13 years ago, this was the mutton buster to beat austin malone. you have a fan club here that follows you around the rodeo, i noticed. today, he's the guy they all want to be. even though he's broken his arm, legs and a variety of other bones. two years ago, he nearly died when a bull collapsed his lungs. the same year he won the top prize of the youth bull riders youth final. >> i'll get on any bull go to any rodeo. they tell me what number. i'll go and put my rope on it. >> reporter: but no question about it bull rideing is one of the most dangerous sports in the world.

. this is an nbc special news report. here's matt lauer and savannah guthrie. >> good morning, everyone 8:00 in the east. 5:00 a.m. on the west coast. we have disturbing developments. officials are releasing chilling information on that german wings plane in france. what they are saying this morning is that the co-pilot of that plane appears to have crashed it deliberately. >> so they have been pouring over the cockpit voice recorder from that flight. here's what they are now saying. they've listened to the last 30 minutes of conversation in the cockpit between the pilot and co-pilot. they were speaking amicably during that time. towards the end of that tape the pilot tells the co-pilot to take over. because he's going to take what is a natural call probably to use the restroom and then the pilot gets locked out and the co-pilot while still in the cockpit goes completely silent but they can hear the pilot outside pounding on the door trying to smash the door in and

even screaming from passengers. >> what we have now learned is that the co-pilot according to authorities decelerated at the dissent using the monitor system to speed up the dissent as it approached the mountains. we want to get to keir simmons. he is near the crash site. france has been monitoring this news conference as well. good morning what else can you fill in for us? >> reporter: savannah good morning. this is absolutely stunning and devastating news. remember we are talking about this a-320 flying into the mountain range behind me here wlachl we are hearing from the french prosecutors, this co-pilot deliberately manipulated the controls of the plane to make it descend thousands of feet into the alps here behind me and as you mentioned, they say what they are doing is analyzing this black box recording of what was going on. they are saying they can hear the pilot banging on the door trying to get in while the co-pilot is doing this. the prosecutors office says we assume that he meant to destroy

the plane and have asked the german authorities for information on his personality. they say there was no response from the co-pilot but right up until the moment of impact on the mountains here you can hear him breathing. so they say he was alive right up to the moment of this crash. guys. >> you are going back to this conversation they had, there was nothing out of the ordinary in the conversation that the pilot and the co-pilot were having prior to the pilot getting up to take that break and leave the cockpit. >> reporter: yeah that's right. i'm just looking down to see what exactly they said. i am told they say during the last 20 machine the two pilots spoke naturally and the commander prepared a briefing for the co-pilot and asked the co-pilot to take command. we listen and hear him push his chair back and go out of the cockpit. they don't appear to know why he left. buts a you say, he may well have been going out for a short break for natural reasons and then what happens is that the

co-pilot starts to change the speed of the plane and starts to change the altitude of the plane and the plane begins to descend down into this mountain range. you just shudder to think what must have been going on in the rest of the plane as they realize what is happening and as you mention, you can hear the pilot trying to get back if again. what we know about the door into this cockpit is it is possible for a pilot on his own to prevent anyone else from coming in. normally that is for good security reasons. in this case it appears to have been used by this co-pilot in order to kill himself and kill the other 149 souls who were on board this plane. >> keir that raises the question who is this co-pilot? i don't think we have a fame released publicly. we have been told he had 650 hours of flying time which we have been told is not that much relatively speaking. was he on any terror watch list?

do you know his personality? >> reporter: we think he is german. we don't know have very much about him. in fact suspiciously we mulligan to think they have not been releasing the name of the pilot and co-pilot as we mulligan to get this news that perhaps something very, very wrong had gone on in the minutes before. as you mentioned, the co-pilot had this 630 hours of flying time. he had undergone a trading and joined german wings, this small airline that is a part of lufthansa back in 2013 so he hadn't been flying for that long. another question by the way, savannah matt is going to be why was one of the pilots allowed to stay in the cockpit on their own given that we know and this may not actually be compliant with regulations, given that we know it is possible for someone on their own in a cockpit to prevent anyone else from coming inside. and we assume too, that nobody on board the plane was able even

contact anyone on the ground. we know that the plane did not put out a mayday signal. there was no emergency indicated to the control tower. the control tower are simply trying to work out what is going on as this plane devends in silence. so there are going to be many questions from this but at the moment just absolutely shock here really about what we are finding out about why that plane dropped into this mountain range. >> all right. keir thank you very much. let's bring in tom costello who covers aviation for us here at abc. tom, this is a very disturbing turn the co-pilot alone in the cockpit sitting silently. although on the tape you can hear him breathing right up to the moment of impact. >> i think we are looking at a mass murder investigation. that's what this boils down to. this individual has killed 149 people t. question is going to be of course why. i think the other question is going to be from a security standpoint how is it possible that that first pilot left?

we believe the captain left the cockpit and then under normal protocols, at least in the united states, a flight attendant comes into the cockpit to stand there and essentially kind of stand guard with the flying pilot to then let that pilot and go to the restroom let him back in. what happened to that flight attendant? was he or she either not threatened or possibly killed as well prior to the incident? >> and, tom, also, a very short period of time here we know this pilot left the cockpit after the plane reached its cruising altitude of 38,000 feet and we know from the flight record that it wasn't at that altitude very long before it mulligan that slow controlled descent. it wasn't out before the co-pilot took these deliberate actions. >> reporter: they were only at 38,000 feet for 21 to three minutes before that descent mulligan.

i began. that's not you irregular, it probably wou he may have really needed to use the lab. but then to go into a vision immediately after he's left the cockpit that the descent begins the rather dramatic and programmed descent speaks to some sort of nefarious action. >> we have been given name of this pilot, andre lepitz. as we continue to talk to you, one of the key questions how much vetting does a pilot get before he is permitted to fly and hold the, in his hands, the lives of 150 people whether it's a mental health background check or something liking into whether he has more nefarious motives. >> in the united states anybody who is going to be going through pilot training goes through a criminal background check. certainly if you go through the commercial pilot program with all of the mainline carriers in

the united states there is extensive veting and psychological testing, et cetera then every six months of course you go through a physical evaluation. i would pointed out that 630 hours of experience before becoming a or while being a first officer, that's not a lot. in the united states you need 1,500 hours to become a first officer and in this case we are told he had 630 houmpls i think there will be a lot of questions. certainly, we have questions about how many hours are required for you to become a profileer and a first officer. but what are the background checks. exactly what are the experience levels required and then the psychological testing behind this individual. but as i mentioned, this is now a mass murder investigation. >> tom costello thank you very much. captain cox flew the a-320 and spent more than 20 years in safety investigations. captain cox, good morning to you. first of all the plane gets to 38,000 feet. it reaches its cruising

altitude. is that a time where it would be unusual for the pilot to leave the cockpit and, secondly do you know about the protocol in europe in terms of a member of the flight crew, a flight attendant taking that pilot's place in the cockpit? >> well first, it would be a normal time for somebody with a physiological need once the airplane reached its cruise altitude. if they're going back to the laboratory that's a good time to do it. the work load has dropped down. you know as you approach your destination, in this case discussle door discuss dousele dusseldorfe securit requirem and w the cockpits the protocol for managing a flight, a pilot coming out of the cockpit and who comes in in most cases, a flight attendant will come in so that there are two people in the flight deck. as far as was this required of this operator? the information, the research i've done it's got conflicting

it is 8:30 on a thursday morning, it's the 26th day of march, 2015. this morning we are following stunning developments in that german wings jet crash in the french alps from tuesday. >> stunning and disturbing as well. investigators have identified the co-pilot at the controls at the time of the crash. they are saying this morning he appears to have deliberately crashed that plane. tom, what are you learning this morning? >> good morning the co-pilot is identified as andrea lubitz they said when the captain got out of the cockpit, the co-pilot began this descent, that they say on the cockpit voice recorder they can hear him breathe, normally. he is fought responding to radio

calls and the captain mulligan pounding on the door but the co-pilot refused to answer him or allowed him in. he had locked the captain out of the cockpit as it mulligan descending and slamming into the mountain air traffic controllers were trying to warn the co-pilot of his deskrentd, his trajectory he was headed straight for a mountain. he refused to answer. the cockpit voice recorder picked up screaming from presumably passengers worn realizing at that point what was going on. they saw the captain pounding on the door to get into the cockpit. then they saw they were going lower and lower and lower. so was this a terrorist attack? the prosecutor said there is no known links to terrorism. at this point this appears to be a case of mass murder back to you. >> it is that indeed tom costello i knee you keep following it. al. >> let's move ahead towards the weekend. starting tomorrow we will have

home at one point when i was home with the littles, he says baby i need to tell you something, it's been five days and you need to go visit the shower. i go you know what you don't know my life. >> don't judge. >> you don't know me. >> what's so funny is you need the shower you are leaking from every blase, dry milk all over the place, my whole thing was my favorite thing was that squirt bottle that they give you when you leave the hospital that you use in the restroom and basically, your minutes are just limited, right. you got to squirt and go. >> i asked for a black napkin for black pants. >> it's only a little poop. >> we can follow up on that. related to that is sometimes your body image isn't great so you kind of have the whole sex thing, no way, like aahh. that happens. >> not feeling very attractive i guess. i think the big thing is as i mentioned before you are leaking, the girls are leaking,

right, your stretched out. your sagging here and there, so you definitely don't feel attractive and i think that's hard for a lot of women to deal with. i think the reality is the moment that you realize what you have done this beautiful thing that you have made whose battle scars are absolutely worth it. i find it's taken two kids to get to that point is that basically the best thing is when my husband sighs how i mother my children i don't have to be perfect. i don't have to be good when he sees how great i am to them he finds that a little bit sexy. >> let's talk about our next truth, which is empractice is the sexy guys don't you call us crazy, maybe there is a sort of like okay i'm just doing the best i can thing. >> my husband, bless his heart. he tried, i bought you ice cream. i screamed at him. i was like i'm not just a dog you throw treats at. what is wrong with me? he's just being nice. i definitely think it overtakes your brain and i think everyone

good morning, i'm rosemary connors. it's just a few minutes before 9:00. weather conditions including low cloud cover are causing delays at some arriving flights, averaging around an hour and 20 minutes at philadelphia international this morning. that's the issue out there right now. let's get a check of the forecast from meteorologist bill henley. >> we've seen some scattered light showers in delaware and south jersey and i'm tracking heavier thunderstorms in maryland that will be moving into delaware during the morning hours and could produce some pretty good rainfall in philadelphia by 11:00 this morning. just some scattered light showers right now in atlantic city, cape may. we've seen the showers taper off in southern delaware but look what is just to the southwest. very heavy thunderstorms. the rain falling at a rate of more than 5.5 inches an hour. 57 lightning strikes so far. those storms are moving off to the northeast. nbc 10 has just learned that sentencing for the woman who abducted a 5-year-old girl from

school and sexually assaulted her has once again been postponed. a jury found christina regusters guilty last year. she took the girl from the school, was wearing muslim garb and said she was her mother. she took the girl home sexually abused her numerous times then left her at a playground in upper darby. the maximum sentence in the case would be life in prison. today lawmakers and advocates will come together in trenton to lay out a series of bills to help new jersey's budget. a group called better choices for new jersey will hold a briefing and talk about legislation to make the state more transparent and reliable when it comes to budget decisions. i'm rosemary connors. we'll have another update in 25 minutes. now back to "today." have a good one.

>> >>. from nbc news this is "today's take live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everybody, welcome to "today" on a thursday morning, march 26th, 2015. i'm al along with tamron hall and natalie is on assignment and as we come on the air, some disturbing breaking news about this german wings aircraft. >> yes, the investigators have now released more information of what's happening about the co-pilot co-pilot co-pilot. right now the indications are the co-pilot appears to have crashed that plane deliberately with 150 people on board including high school students and small children. let's go to nbc correspondent ke

ri simmons who is in france near the investigation site the crash site with the latest on what we have learned. keir. >> reporter: good morning. this is absolutely chilling news. as you can hear the helicopter flying overhead, that's one of the many helicopters transporting investigating up to the crash scene, what they are now saying and, frankly, tamron what they are saying is that this was the mass murder of 149 people because what they have concluded is that the co-pilot locked himself in the cockpit of the plane and then deliberately manipulated the controls for a devastating descent into the alps mountain range behind me here. let me ask the cameraman to pan across that mountain range as i describe to you more of what the french practices security has said. he says while the plane was flying over the mountains here the pilot left the cockpit to go

we think perhaps to the restroom. then the co-pilot then locked himself in that cockpit and refused to open the door to the pilot who mulligan to frantically bang on the door. you can see in this animation what it may have been like. he was banging on that door trying to get in. apparently the co-pilot did not respond to that and chen then changed the direction of the plane so it mulligan to head down from 38,000 feet down to this mountain range. i think we can show you as well the scene there, just to make the point of how devastating the impact was. what the french prosecutor says in the statement that he made just in the last hour is we assume that the co-pilot meant to destroy the plane and asked the german authorities for information on his personality. what is really frightening is that according to the prosecutor you can hear the co-pilot breathing all the way through

the moment of impact. so they assume that he was alive and in the final minutes as well as the pilot trying to get into the cockpit, you can hear the screams of the passengers on board. it must have been absolutely terrifying in those final minutes of this a-320 huddled down into the alps. all of these people realizing they were headed for certain death. what do we know about this co-pilot? we are told he is 28. >> that he had 600 flying hours that he has joined this airline after training german wings owned by the german airline lufthansa. by the way, in the next hour or so we expect the ceo of lufthansa to have a news conference. just yesterday, that ceo is saying he didn't understand it. he didn't understand what happens. now he is going to have to explain why and i think we can see pictures now of what we believe is the home of the

co-pilot andrea lubitz the ceo of lufthansa is going to have to explain how it is that a co-pilot was flying their plane and appears to have taken an opportunity, if you like to fly an a-320 into the mountains here while the other pilot was desperately trying to get inside. also on this black box, they say there were 20 minutes of ordinary conversation between the pilot and co-pilot before he left that cockpit. so guy, absolutely no indication why this co-pilot appears to have done this. it really s. it's just absolutely devastating. >> keir what do we know about the protocol whether or not the pilot or co-pilot can be in the cockpit alone? what is the protocol for that airline? >> reporter: it doesn't know. but we do know according to regulations in most of the airline industry it is not supposed to be the case that one person is left inside the cockpit. the point of how this door to the cockpit is that you can't

get in there as an ordinary passenger for very good reasons after 9-11 in this protection for terrorism. but other members of the crew should be able to get in there. so what we assume from that and what clearly investigators and the french prosecutor is assumeing is that the co-pilot prevented other members of the crew from getting inside and then changed the direction of the plane. so as it appears, even though we don't hear from the co-pilot on the black box recording, we are assuming he knew what he was doing and it was deliberate. because those were deliberate acts. >> keir simmons, thank you very much. french prosecutors saying there was nothing to suggest this was a terror attack. it certainly was terrifying. >> the part that makes me feel the most sick is like you said the kids were on this plane, when my husband heard this was an act that meant to be on purchase he said think about those parents, those high school parents that were waiting for

concerned, light showers off of atlantic city but we're tracking heavier thunderstorms through maryland. those are moving to the northeast at 50 miles an hour moving into delaware this morning. could be in the philadelphia area by 11:00 this morning. so showers, thunderstorms and look at those temperatures. much milder today. 60s to near 70 this afternoon. philadelphia police are investigating a home invasion in point breeze where the victim says that the intruder choked her. police are calling it a strong-arm robbery. they say it happened around 4:00 this morning on south chadwick street. the victim told police the attacker asked for money and grabbed her by the throat. in the end the intruder did not take anything from the home. police are looking for two men who stole a tv and a playstation during another home invasion robbery in west philadelphia. according to investigators, the men rocked and pistol whipped someone inside the house. the victim went to the hospital but is expected to be okay.

today a hearing in philadelphia will take a closer look at governor tom wolf's moratorium on executions in pennsylvania. members of the house judiciary committee who oppose the ban are holding the hearing at philadelphia's city hall. they'll hear from the families of murder victims. the state supreme court is now deciding if the moratorium is legal. i'm rosemary kaunconnors. now back to "today."
