you. good morning. >> reporter: we learn that the families of the victims here in france are given dna samples to help with the identification. the fbi launched their own investigation because three americans were killed and reports of the copilot on the way to training in the u.s. the crucial question what motivates the copilot to do this? >> he was suffering from a personal life crisis according to several newspapers. the remains of 149 people he allegedly killed. a pain staking search for clues and to identify the victims. personal possessions, jewelry, clothes? >> among the relatives traveling to the scene were the copilot's

family who were pulled aside and told he caused the crash. from now on ensuring two people are always in the cockpit. he locked the cockpit door they said using controls like those seen in this airbus video. using the key pad, preventing the pilot from reentering. he programmed the plane and it recorded the screams of passengers in the final minutes. >> they were innocent people this man said. if he was ill, the company should have been aware. the family was brought to the bottom of the mountain. >> this may be as close as they can get to their loved ones's final resting place. >> stars and stripes for the three americans killed. the third victim robert oliver named last night.

early this morning, some of those european airlines are in that two-person rule include virgin air, a low cost carrier, norway iceland and the transportation minster said they will adopt that rule. of course it's too late for the people on board the flight that crashed here. >> thank you. we want to get more on the investigations that are unfolding into the copilot's background. they are searching both his apartment and his parents's home north of frankfurt. what are they finding? >> reporter: good morning, savannah. we do not know and they have been through the house trying to figure out why anyone would do this. they are looking at a break in his flight school. how long did it last? what we know is he had no criminal record and no known

terrorist ties. he is being called a mass murderer. 27-year-oldan dre as is accused of deliberately crashing into the side of a mountain. no obvious motive. only eight minutes of steady breathing while the captain bangs on the door and passengers scream for their lives. investigators are trying to piece together the puzzle as carrying boxes of evidence including computers from an apartment in dusseldorf while intrusion those close to him. few clues from neighbors who call him polite and fun. >> i cannot imagine he had done this. that does not fit in this picture. >> german jurpnewspapers said he

suffered from depression. he started training with lufthansa in 2008. he got as commercial pilot's license and accumulated only 630 flight hours until he put this plane into an eight-minute controlled dive that ended with slamming into the french alps. they said they were no red flags. >> were there reports there was anything wrong? >> we don't have any reports. >> from that flight crew german media reported he had a depression episode. lufthansa said they would not comment on that saying they couldn't comment on a medical history. we are reporting on a break up he might have had recently but we haven't been able to confirm that at this point in time.

>> they are looking hard at that background. >> let's bring in greg. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. >> we know what they are doing. going through his apartment to find clues as to why he may have done this. would there be a way to recover this before he did this? how does the airline industry answer that question? >> that will be the most challenging question they have to answer. when i did silk air in 1997 one of the things we looked at were life-changing events with both crew members and they focused on the captain and saw he had a number of life-changing events with his career relationship and employer and his family and financial investigation. they will be looking at that with this young man. how the airline sees that is totally different. they don't see him every day. while we have pilots that fly together regularly, they may see

personality traits during that time. nobody knows what is normal and what's not unless it's very, very obvious that there is an issue that a person coming into the cockpit looks to be having a bad day. >> for example, in this country pilots before they are hired go through a health and emotional screening. it's my understanding that after that it's the honors system. it's up to the pilot to tell the airline if they are going through a difficult twim drugs or things like that. >> absolutely. it's self policing that has been challenged. one, you are employed. the last thing you want to do is confess that you have issues. we see this all the time with calling in fatigue. i'm tire and i can't fly today and the scrutiny that goes with that. if you have a mental issue or depression that will be a big

story to see if he was being treat and he was on any medication to control the depression. what the trigger was and if it is this break up or life-altering event, could it have been a trigger. the big question is is this just an isolated event or is there something more systemic to this? >> thank you very much. the majority of pilots flying in the skies right now are well-trained and skilled and trustworthy. it's easy to say this is the exception of the rule. 204 people die. >> everybody wants to think of a way to prevent it. it's a practical matter to what's going on. >> it's a real challenge. >> we have a big story back here. crews are working to put out hot spots at the site of a massive building explosion and collapse in new york city. this could take days.

nbc is at the scene for us. good morning. what's the latest for us there? >> >> reporter: 19 people were injured when a powerful explosion levelled a building and caused two others to collapse. you can see what's left of the building. authorities are investigating a family of a 23-year-old man. he was in a restaurant on the ground floor and now he is missing. i should tell you that authorities say they are investigating whether a gas leak was the cause of this explosion. >> the collapse caught on camera in manhattan's east village. the first of three buildings to go down. >> a major building collapse on second avenue. >> firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire that escalated to seven alarms. >> people injured in between and

it was pretty terrible. >> 250 firefighters from at least 50 units were on scene, trying to control the blaze that engulfed the five-story building housing more than two dozen units and the restaurant. one man caught on tape helping a woman down from a fire escape before firefighters arrived. the collapse came less than an hour after the fire began. flame spread to neighboring structures as crews worked to detain the fire that bill deblasio said was caused by the gas work. >> we are praying that no other individuals are found injured and no fatalities. >> they are putting out hot spots that could take days before they get the fire
