the audio cuts out. nbc news has not independently veerified the timeline and they will not confirm or deny it. in germany, more reports of his medical issues. was it depression or a vision problem and more rumors about his personal life. no answers. no official motive to what could have gone so wrong to the 27-year-old who friends say loved the sky. as for the medical issues, vision problems were bad enough to put a wrench in his career if not stop it all together. they are looking into all of that. the press is reporting that french investigators have not yet talked to lube its's parents, but they put german investigators that are taking place in germany and said they interviewed close family members as well as a female companion and they wouldn't say who. >> at the airlines headquarters.

thank you very much. >> a terrible story out of florida. >> we have breaking news to start off. eight people were killed and ten injured when their van crashed in florida about 80 miles west of west palm beach. officials say the van passed through a stop sign and careened across all lanes of traffic and ended up crashing into a steep partially water-filled canal. the driver and seven passengers were confirmed dead and ten other people taken to the hospital. now to unbelievable video out of california. a firefighter is in critical condition this morning after he fell through a roof of a burning garage on sunday afternoon. the whole thing was caught on camera. this cell phone video captured the moment on sunday afternoon when a firefighter walking on top of a burping garage in fresno california plunged through the roof while trying to ventilate the building. as he fell a blaze of fire caused them to scream in horror.

day. gusty winds this afternoon to 30 miles an hour will help to blow the clouds out of here. 40 right now in reading and lancaster, it's up to 41 in wilmington. today delaware county authorities expect to file charges in the shooting death of an off-duty police officer. mark hudson was shot and killed inside his home on saturday. investigators questioned his girlfriend who was there at the time of the shooting. the police chief tells us she was supposed to be arraigned overnight on charges stemming from a previous domestic incident. we're still waiting for confirmation to see if that happened. we'll update you as soon as we know more. in just a few minutes, leaders in philadelphia will hear testimony about a bill that would make food trucks safer. this comes after that deadly explosion in north philadelphia last summer that killed a mother and her daughter who were working in the truck. the proposed bill calls for regular inspections of food trucks including their propane tanks. last fall several councilmembers tried to get a similar bill pushed through but it didn't make it through council. i'm chris cato.

we're back with more of "today" on this funday monday. this week many of you will gather around the table for an easter feast or passover. >> but who sits where and who cleans up, and should there be kids at the table? with so many questions we turn to the expert for advice, mr. manners himself, thomas p. farley. >> nice to see you again. >> hello. >> nice to be back with us. >> thank you for being with us today. >> a lot of times you bring something along with. should you -- is there something you should bring? is wine okay or flowers or something? >> should you always bring something? or can you send it afterwards? >> so two things. first you want to make sure you offer to bring a dish. the host may decline. you can still bring something but just make sure it's not a scene stealer. don't bring the giant bunny cake that's going to steal the thunder of the host.

>> but also, if they don't ask, i mean, if the guests don't say can i bring something, is it okay for the host to say, hey, would you mind also bringing that fantastic pie you made last time? is that okay? >> that's the key. so you don't want to have them bring the main course, obviously. you don't want to ask them to make something they've never done before. but if it's something you can kind of feed their ego a little bit, everybody loves your salad. could you bring that? >> we have a table full of lovelies. >> yes, we do. >> we have addi who is so stinkin' cute. along with mom, susan and dad, mike. susan, of course is one of our producers on the show. okay. so let's pretend -- >> look at her. >>my addi! >> okay. sometimes kids need to be distracted. thank you. is it okay to give a phone? an ipad or something just to keep -- thank you. keep her occupied? is that okay? >> here's the thing. parents may do without iphones and ipads at the table for all of recorded history.

exactly, exactly. so although it's a nice, easy thing to do, i'd recommend against it because you'll be going down a slope that it's hard to turn back. >> mm-hmm. they're going to want it the next day. >> should you have kids at the table in general? addi can always come. >> or should you have a separate kids' table where they can do their thing and draw? >> with a baby as cute as addi, i don't know how you separate yourself but for older kids, i think it can be a great option especially if you've got multiple children. it gives them a nice chance to bond and a good chance to have some adult time. >> what do you guys do if addi has a little freak-out? >> probably just walk away from the table. >> i wasn't quite sure. okay. what about the passing thing? >> yeah. you're only supposed to pass to the right? >> yeah, this started because the guest of honor would always be seated to the host's right. so the guest of honor would get the plate first. that's where it began. >> oh. where you are, to my right. where i am to him. so we're all guests of honor. >> you're my right-hand woman

here in this case. >> okay. >> so the other thing is when you pass to the right it gives the person the opportunity to grab with the left and then serve themselves with their right hand. if they're right-handed so it makes it a little easier. >> anybody here left-handed? kate? >> kate's not. >> what about dishes and such? >> so washing the dishes, certainly i think everybody should take turns clearing their own plates. you don't want a mass exodus where everybody's going to the kitchen. by the same token, you should really have everybody chipping in. exactly. >> what about the washing of them? >> you know this is a tough thing for the host, right? you want to be present for your guest. but at the same time, you need to be clearing the table. you need to be keeping that kitchen clean for the next course. >> right. >> so i'd say if you have a helper, have the helper come in and do a little bit of washing with you. >> what about dessert? should you serve dessert, like, right away? or should we get up and get coffee or do you just bring it right on? >> at a meal like this you need some digestion time. right after dinner is a great chance to do your egg hunt, to do a little walk, some sporting

now to our special series "do you believe?" over the next few days we'll try to understand what it means to have faith and be spiritual. >> today we're asking the question does prayer work? the "today" show surveyed over 1,500 people and more than half of them say they pray. and nearly 70% of those who do pray say they do it every day. but does the same go for kids? >> so we decided to send our good friend jenna bush hager out to find out more. hey. >> this was if you. i had the chance to sit down with some very special kids. and i asked them if they prayed and whether they consider themselves spiritual. let's just say they had a lot to say. ♪ >> we have a problem, he says come. come to me as you are. >> i pray five times a day. it's a way i worship god. >> i feel more spiritual when i'm meditating. >> reporter: for so many a relationship with god or a deep

spirituality is an important part of their lives. and modern science has taken notice. lisa miller a columbia university psychologist and author of the new book "the spiritual child" has spent over a decade researching the impact of religion and spirituality. >> here we have maps of the human brain. and what we can see here in red are all of the regions of the brain where there is a thicker cortex in people with a strong personal spirituality. it doesn't matter what religious denomination they are. >> reporter: the cortex is associated with i.q. the thicker, the better. a thinner cortex is associated with depression and alzheimer's. who benefits the most? kids. studies show they're 40% less likely to abuse substances and 60% less likely to be severely depressed as teens. if they have faith or are spiritual.

>> it can be allah, god the universe, but some type of personal relationship with a higher power is more protective against mental health problems and suffering than anything known to the medical or social sciences. >> reporter: and miller says prayer plays a role. so how can we -- is prayer part of your daily life? >> yes. prayer is a way to communicate with god. it's something essential for me. when you pray to god it's not something that you have to have something in your head, but basically have god there all the time. >> reporter: raise your hand if you think you can be spiritual but not religious. mm-hmm. kind of. >> i'm spiritual but i don't consider myself to be religious. my father is jewish and my mother is catholic, but i don't practice religion in any way. i meditate. sometimes i speak to god. and i don't even know if i believe in god. so it's spiritual but it's not organized in any way for me. >> i am also not very religious,

so i actually find to get through times at school you know i love soccer. when i'm playing soccer, i think somehow that helps me clear my mind. >> reporter: so would you consider yourselves spiritual? >> yeah. >> reporter: anybody else want to comment? yes. >> so my religion, islam and us muslims pray five times a day. before we pray we do, like, a spiritual where you do like a wash before you start praying. it's kind of like overlap for us. >> reporter: so you're spiritual and also religious? >> right. >> reporter: whether talking to god or finding your own personal spirituality modern-day scientists now have proof of something our ancestors may have always known. prayer can help protect our kids. >> praying five times throughout the day reminds me why i'm still here.
