the audio cuts out. nbc news has not independently veerified the timeline and they will not confirm or deny it. in germany, more reports of his medical issues. was it depression or a vision problem and more rumors about his personal life. no answers. no official motive to what could have gone so wrong to the 27-year-old who friends say loved the sky. as for the medical issues, vision problems were bad enough to put a wrench in his career if not stop it all together. they are looking into all of that. the press is reporting that french investigators have not yet talked to lube its's parents, but they put german investigators that are taking place in germany and said they interviewed close family members as well as a female companion and they wouldn't say who. >> at the airlines headquarters.

torn up in the trash, but they don't know what kind of illness he was suffering from. there were reports of depression or vision problems that were serious enough that it could end his career. they will take all this into account to figure out as much as they can of who he was. there were reports citing the other black box, the cockpit voice recorder that perports to detail what it was like inside that plane in the final minutes where you hear him shut the door and the captain banging on the door and the passengers screaming as they hurtle towards the mountain. they have a big task to piece together all of this information to figure out who he was and whether or not they can stop anything like this from happening in the future. tamron? >> thank you very much. fallout over a law that allows businesses to discriminate

he lied to federal authorities and he is writing about the experience and what is wrong with the legal system. it's called from jailer to jailed. my journey to inmate number 84888-054. good to see you. >> thanks. >> you are out of jail coming up on two years in may. but you are on probation until october of next year. what are the terms? what does it mean for your life? >> are most importantly it's in a schultz that hangs over you. it obtains a successful point to a lot of businesses and a lot of companies. they don't want to go near. >> they talked about the professional projection. what has it been like for you? sometimes you feel lost and you probably never will feel whole again. what do you mean by that?

>> on a personal level, you never go back to where you came from. on a professional level, you are never going to go back. you are diminished for the rest of your life. a felony conviction is a life sentence. we are a country and we knew their systems. once you have a conviction on your record that conviction will last with you frofr. that's a commentary on the justice system. you learned a lot by being in. how did that change.

we realized we are in prison and incarcerated incarcerated. they learn from their mistakes. bad people do bad things in prison. not violent and what will draw the defenders. they put them in prison for 10 or 15 years. i think it's wrong and the system has to change. the only way is to change the laws. >> in other words, why didn't it occur to you? >> when you are a police officer or a correction official, when you focus on the job you have you don't think about the consequence to your families. you don't really think twhoopz this guy after he is convicted

of a felony? his personal and professional is annihilated for the rest of his life. you never think about that. it has nothing to do with you. it's the system. >> one of the issues you are on is solitary confinement. it ought to be mandatoriy that every jail and prison official should have to spend 72 hours in the hole to see what what it's like. >> i spent 60 days. two months in solitary confinement. the terrorist wing in the colding center. >> i can tell you that you lose your mind. we do this -- if we do it for national security reasons or threats to the facility or staff, i get it. to put young people in solitary for institutional infractions is

stupid. >> i have to ask you about your relationship with rudy giuliani through 9/11. he said you were like a brother to him. now as you write, the two of you don't speak. what happened? >> we created distance when the federal investigation began. we distanced ourselves to keep him out of the mix. i never heard from him again. i get it. you want to distance yourself from me, that's fine. he is the godfather of my two younger daughters. i was gone for three years. i wish he would have had the decency to call my wife. are the kids okay? do you need groceries? >> never reached out in three

day. gusty winds this afternoon to 30 miles an hour will help to blow the clouds out of here. 40 right now in reading and lancaster, it's up to 41 in wilmington. today delaware county authorities expect to file charges in the shooting death of an off-duty police officer. mark hudson was shot and killed inside his home on saturday. investigators questioned his girlfriend who was there at the time of the shooting. the police chief tells us she was supposed to be arraigned overnight on charges stemming from a previous domestic incident. we're still waiting for confirmation to see if that happened. we'll update you as soon as we know more. in just a few minutes, leaders in philadelphia will hear testimony about a bill that would make food trucks safer. this comes after that deadly explosion in north philadelphia last summer that killed a mother and her daughter who were working in the truck. the proposed bill calls for regular inspections of food trucks including their propane tanks. last fall several councilmembers tried to get a similar bill pushed through but it didn't make it through council. i'm chris cato.

now to our special series "do you believe?" over the next few days we'll try to understand what it means to have faith and be spiritual. >> today we're asking the question does prayer work? the "today" show surveyed over 1,500 people and more than half of them say they pray. and nearly 70% of those who do pray say they do it every day. but does the same go for kids? >> so we decided to send our good friend jenna bush hager out to find out more. hey. >> this was if you. i had the chance to sit down with some very special kids. and i asked them if they prayed and whether they consider themselves spiritual. let's just say they had a lot to say. ♪ >> we have a problem, he says come. come to me as you are. >> i pray five times a day. it's a way i worship god. >> i feel more spiritual when i'm meditating. >> reporter: for so many a relationship with god or a deep

spirituality is an important part of their lives. and modern science has taken notice. lisa miller a columbia university psychologist and author of the new book "the spiritual child" has spent over a decade researching the impact of religion and spirituality. >> here we have maps of the human brain. and what we can see here in red are all of the regions of the brain where there is a thicker cortex in people with a strong personal spirituality. it doesn't matter what religious denomination they are. >> reporter: the cortex is associated with i.q. the thicker, the better. a thinner cortex is associated with depression and alzheimer's. who benefits the most? kids. studies show they're 40% less likely to abuse substances and 60% less likely to be severely depressed as teens. if they have faith or are spiritual.

>> it can be allah, god the universe, but some type of personal relationship with a higher power is more protective against mental health problems and suffering than anything known to the medical or social sciences. >> reporter: and miller says prayer plays a role. so how can we -- is prayer part of your daily life? >> yes. prayer is a way to communicate with god. it's something essential for me. when you pray to god it's not something that you have to have something in your head, but basically have god there all the time. >> reporter: raise your hand if you think you can be spiritual but not religious. mm-hmm. kind of. >> i'm spiritual but i don't consider myself to be religious. my father is jewish and my mother is catholic, but i don't practice religion in any way. i meditate. sometimes i speak to god. and i don't even know if i believe in god. so it's spiritual but it's not organized in any way for me. >> i am also not very religious,

so i actually find to get through times at school you know i love soccer. when i'm playing soccer, i think somehow that helps me clear my mind. >> reporter: so would you consider yourselves spiritual? >> yeah. >> reporter: anybody else want to comment? yes. >> so my religion, islam and us muslims pray five times a day. before we pray we do, like, a spiritual where you do like a wash before you start praying. it's kind of like overlap for us. >> reporter: so you're spiritual and also religious? >> right. >> reporter: whether talking to god or finding your own personal spirituality modern-day scientists now have proof of something our ancestors may have always known. prayer can help protect our kids. >> praying five times throughout the day reminds me why i'm still here.

it became my passion and i took it more seriously. >> yeah, you don't have any trouble with it now. >> yeah, it really took off from there. >> good for you, mom. >> did you know he had a talent right away a writing talent? >> it kind of developed over time. so when he was little, he was literally doing pictures "i hate writing." >> wow. >> it definitely developed. >> but it develops your imagination doesn't it? you had stories you wanted to tell. are you talking about yourself, obviously this is you. >> yeah. >> the lead character. >> it's based on myself. >> write what you know. >> yes. >> a lot of young kids want to do what you're doing. so some kids came in and they've got some questions for you. all right first up is briggs. go ahead with that question. >> my name is briggs and i want to know where you get your ideas for your books. >> where do you get the ideas? >> i get my ideas from middle school. i went to middle school, and i am really observant. middle school is a funny place. a lot of great things happen. and i think my biggest skill is my eavesdropping skills. okay. i really mastered them. i'm more of a traditionalist. i like to crouch the funnel.
