and that breaking news is a house fire in conshohocken forcing neighbors to evacuate. a live picture from the scene here. we're having a live report as firefighters work to find the cause of that fire. and septa riders are on alert two. attacks in two weeks have police scouring surveillance cameras for clues making sure no one else waiting on a train becomes a victim. and it is dry out there this morning but that will soon change. first alert radar is showing a big of green over the midwest bringing two rounds of rain toward us. let's begin with bill henley and the first alert forecast.

we should see showers later this morning, right? yes, and the sun will be coming up and you'll need the sunglasses to start with. and you'll need to bundle up in the 30s and 40s. look how nice and clear it is this morning with the view of the moon. temperatures are still falling, in philadelphia 44. northeast philadelphia trenton, pottstown, down to 34. 33 in trenton. dry right now, but you can see the wet weather is starting to move towards western pennsylvania detroit, cleveland, saginaw seaing wet weather this morning. that's the bulk of the rain with the first showers late this morning. cold to start with 40 degrees by 7:00. by 9:00 44. 47 degrees with showers at lunchtime. we'll go through it hour by hour with the future weather when i'm back in ten minutes. i'll show you where the rain will arrive first. now we'll go to first alert traffic reporter christine maddela. good morning to you, christine.

good morning. the roads are looking pretty good. the pennsylvania turnpike, 295 and all the majors nothing really slowing us too much. we'll take a look in center city if we can see there, it looks green on the map. and 676 is looking pretty good. the reason conditions are dry and not a lot of volume out there this morning. so we are not seeing too many problems. as we take a look at drive times on the schuylkill expressway between the blue route and the vine, we are not seeing any problems there. getting a green light, 13 and 12 minutes between the blue route and the vine. bridges are in the clear, so that's good news traveling to and from philly. and new jersey an update on the pennsylvania turnpike with road work between route 309 and route 611, but that's cleared out of the way. here's something to affect local traffic. nbc 10 just arrived on the scene of breaking news in montgomery county. right now fire crews are battling a house fire in conshohocken. matt delucia is live outside that house there. matt, it looked like crews have a handle on this thing now,

right? >> reporter: that is correct, chris. we got here a few minutes ago. i'm going to step out of the way, the fire trucks are still here at first avenue. just down the street here that's where all the activity is and the fire is behind that white building there on the left. i've been told we'll get closer in the next few minutes, but they are trying to make sure the area is safe around there. the call came in at 2:45 with crews arriving to see very heavy fiery conditions. but thankfully no injuries are reported. it's a house that was on fire but there's no smoke. they do appear to have this under control with the fire out. in the next half hour, we'll try to get a closer look. first after is shut down here because of the fire department activity. we'll be back in a half hour with an update. live in conshohocken matt

delucia, "nbc 10 news." nbc 10 was first on the scene of this overnight fire in the cobbs creek section of philadelphia that broke out in front of a store at 50th and katherine streets at 1:30 this morning. investigators call it suspicious and are talking to a person of interest. but so far no arrests. well, investigators could release surveillance video today in the latest attack at a septa station. a crime that sent a man to the hospital. police say a group of teens attacked the man on the l platform at 15th and market streets yesterday afternoon. this comes after an attack on the subway platform at broad and locust less than two weeks ago. in yesterday's incident septa officials say the teenagers got into an argument with the victim and one of them punched the man. officials are hoping surveillance video find the group of teens. meantime, philadelphia police released these pictures of teens that beat up another teenager on a center city platform on march 19th. they are hoping someone will recognize these people and call police.

that attack happened at the walnut locust street station. you can see here in this surveillance video, a group of teens were kicking and punching the victims sitting on the bench there. the victim had minor injuries. police are investigating to see if the two attacks are connected. and new information this morning on the massive brawl in atlantic city high school. 25 students are now facing charges stemming from the march 19th fight. authorities charged six students with assault and 19 with disorderly conduct. officers say the principal and vice principal were attacked while trying to break up the fight. the security guard and police officer also had minor injuries. and the lynwood man charged with assaulting a police officer outside the tropicana pleaded not guilty. david castillani accused the officers of excessive force. the nbc 10 investigators first showed you security footage of this in june 2013. the officers were cleared of wrongdoing.

instead, castillani was indicted with a pending civil suit against the police department. and a bucks county man will likely spend the next few decades in prison for stabbing a police officer and stealing his squad car. a judge sentenced matthew miller to spend 35 years behind bars. last june the bensalem police officer caught miller after he walked away from a work releasement prarelease ment program. he stabbed the officer and jumped into the police cruiser. the officer was not hurt because of his bullet-proof vest. this man pleaded guilty to spying on women in restrooms. javier mendiola-soto hit cameras in ten locations around the university of delaware and also in newark. and this morning we're checking to find out if families

living in this darby township neighborhood have been allowed to return home yet after last night's deadly fire. one man was killed in the fire at the home on west jackson street. officials haven't released his name yet but neighbors tell us the homeowner was an elderly man. they also describe the sound they heard before they walked outside to see the home in flames. >> it was an explosion, i heard a big explosion and we came outside to find a blazing fire. >> and fire officials say battling the fire was a challenge because the house and yard were so full of the owner's possessions they couldn't get inside the home. and the corruption trial of six former philadelphia narcotic officers will resume today. jurors heard opening statements yesterday. prosecutors say for six years these six men broke into homes without search warrants and robbed suspected dealers of millions of dollars worth of cash and drugs. lawyers say the government's case relies on 19 lying criminals and a turned cop.

the trial will last ten weeks. the former fbi agent charged with tampering evidence is expected to make a plea deal. matthew maryland is accused of stealing guns from the d.c. office. on numerous occasions lowry seized drugs during a bust and kept it for his personal use. students at rutgers university in camden are teaming up with fast food workers for a raise the wage rally. that rally is part of a national campaign by a service employees union to raise the minimum wage for fast food workers to $15 an hour. organizers say the rally calls for a massive strike in philadelphia on april 15th. 4:08 and skies are mostly clear. the moon is getting ready to set at this hour with temperatures

in the 30s and 40s. cape may decided to stop reporting at this hour. it is 33 in doylestown. and parts of southern new jersey are in the lower 30s. look at the water like glass. the zulschuylkill will see a light breeze throughout the day and rain throughout the day. 44 at philadelphia international and for atlantic city at the airport. most of the rest of the area are seeing readings in the 30s. west chester, 32 degrees. right now it's in the 20s in west town. a cold start for coatsville chester springs, 34. phoenixville, 36 degrees. you will need to bundle up with the sunshine. but then the clouds arrive and we are looking at rainfall. by late this morning, the first showers are moving into the area. heading out the door it's completely dry. the rain the snow is all to the

northwest. by the time it gets to us it will just be rain. it's cold air in central and northern michigan. and it's on the move. we'll see that wet weather this afternoon and into this evening for philadelphia. and there could be some snow mixing to the north, but temperatures will be above freezing. so it couldn't be causing too many problems. the forecast today calls for clouds to increase. the first showers late this morning and a steadier rain arriving during the afternoon. to the north, temperatures are stuck in the 40s. south jersey will make it into the 50s. i'll show you when the rain is moving out with the extended future weather when i'm back in ten. ten minutes after 4:00 now the first alert traffic reporter christine maddela has everything you need to know before you hit the roads this early tuesday morning. christine? >> it is early out there as we heard bill say it's still dry, so that means road conditions are pretty good. looking at the schuylkill expressway near montgomery drive, you can see a good view of the roads where it is dry and

not a lot of volume out there. now is the time to head out heading to work or school. taking a look on the schuylkill expressway, your drive times between the blue route and the vine will definitely pick up as we get later into our morning commute, but for now eastbound between the blue route and the vine, 11 minutes. the same in the other direction. and taking a stand against the death penalty. what pharmacists are doing now to try to stop lethal injection. plus work plea safety in the spotlight. the multimillion payout for a murder spree in this area that could have a far reaching impact. and excitement throughout philadelphia is building for the world meeting of families coming up why those four days in september will look different for high school and elementary school students here.

the world meeting of families in philadelphia is less than six months away now. of course, people all across the area are preparing for the pope's visit including a local high school where hundreds of students are invited to come to stay for the papal visit. katy zachry is live outside st. joe's prep outside of philadelphia for this story. this is a different twist on some cross cultural experience for the students here. >> as you can imagine, the students here at st. joe's prep are so excited for the papal visit, so they wanted to share this experience with hundreds of their students from across the country. so come september, st. joe's prep will host 300 students from across the u.s. canada and

accelerated toward a police car blocking the road and that's when the officer opened fire. one of the then was killed and the other taken to the hospital. a police officer was also injured. the fbi said a handgun and drugs were found inside that car. defense attorneys for boston marathon bombing suspect dzhokhar seartsarnaev will try to convince jurors that his client doesn't need the death penalty. he did take part in the bombings but his brother was the mastermind. the defense says the goal is not to win the acquittal but to save him from the death penalty. from the south jersey bureau the millville man charged with killing his baby stepdaughter will face the judge today. manuel mikes is being held on $900,000 bail. a 911 call came in yesterday saying a baby wasn't breathing

at a millville cumberland county home. they tell us mike initially claims the child suffocated and he tried to perform cpr. >> police say the child suffered head injuries. >> police say the older child wasn't home at the time but the child's pregnant mother was hospitalized. two families will get more than $46 million in damages after a disgruntled coworker killed their loved one. natanya brown was found and then

a worker ran and hid. >> a security guard has to stay on post and not simply run away. you have to call management and tell them somebody is back in the building with a gun. >> ivan hiller was convicted of killing both men and wounding another. u.s. security associations believes that its personnel on due tut made reasonable decisions and acted with courage in the face of a direct threat to their own lives. the company plans to appeal the verdict. and the names of the two men killeded in a small plane crash on sunday in chester county are still a mystery. the faa and the national transportation safety board are looking into the cause of the crash. the piper pa went down just minutes afterward.

skies are clear right now and we're getting a cold start this morning. temperatures have dropped into the 30s and 40s. and they are still falling at this hour. the a wide view from center city. 44 degrees here at nbc 10. temperatures are in the 40s, but much of the area is in the 30s. yesterday we broke out with sunshine. the same thing, temperatures are falling at 4:20 in the morning. and waiting for the next round of cloud cover, just off to the northwest. this is producing rain and snow. and it is moving our way. but the first showers could be here later this morning. at 11:00, rainfall with temperatures in the upper 30s.

but as the day goes on temperatures will be climbing for philadelphia trenton pottstown, you may see a mix of rain and snow with a temperature of 40 degrees and above freezing for the pocano mountains. accumulation does not look likely. at 8:00 they finally taper off by 11:00 with the last few rain drops around. temperatures still near freezing and they will plunge overnight. it will be a cold start but clear start tomorrow morning. 4:21 and time to get a check on the traffic out there with christine maddela. anything to slow us down christine? >> right now things are looking good on interstate 295 right at 168. there are a few cars out thereto

4:25 now. we have new information in the ongoing legal battle between the family of penn state's late joe paterno. the judge ruled that the paterno state cannot rule for breech of contract. they repeated the breech of contract ruling and that was dismissed. the rest of the case will continue to move forward. prosecutors are moving closer to filing charges against

a florida eye doctor and bob menendez. the justice department is looking into whether or not the senator abused his office by taking actions to benefit that doctor in exchange for bribes. menendez denies any wrongdoing and an insider says the eye doctor is not cooperating with investigators. and philadelphia city council members will gather again in two weeks to talk about food truck safety. a food truck safety bill will prevent this from happening again. a mother and daughter working inside a truck were killed last summer when a propane tank exploded. they heard testimony about the bill yesterday that would require the trucks to be inspected. and camden-based campbells soup is offering works a buyout.
