morning. matt delucia is live outside the parking garage where this took place. you have been working this story since the weekend and you have a video that many business owners want to see. >> reporter: and that video is the only thing offering a real clue. take a look at the burgundy ford econo van. the van went into the garage at eighth and chestnut after 1:00 p.m. on saturday. now at 3:45 the jewelry store worker starts heading for her car and five minutes later we can see the van leaving. now the 53-year-old victim told police three men in the van wanted codes to the safe over at national watch and diamond across the street. that's where she works. she didn't have them or refused to give them up, so the men repeatedly beat her and dropped

her off in a darby cemetery twice before she was finally able to get some help. i spoke with several jewelers out here yesterday and they are pretty shaken up by this crime. >> the nicest soul i've ever known, friendly she's very knowledgeable about jewelry and items that i bought and sold. >> reporter: and adding to the concern is that police are still looking for the men who carried out the attack. the store here was closed yesterday. the owner, though said he is happy his employee is home now recovering. live in center city, matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." tonight six democrats hoping to be philadelphia's next mayor will face-off in a live debate to air right here on nbc 10. last night our crews were working to get everything set up inside the kimmel center where the candidates will take the stage tonight. and that's where nbc 10's katy zachry is live with a preview of tonight's debate. katy? >> reporter: hi, chris. the greater philadelphia chamber

of commerce are intimately involved in the mayoral race this year. all six democratic candidates for mayor are talking part in the televised debate coming from inside the kimmel center a month and a half ahead of the democratic primary election. right now there's only one republican candidate running. our nbc 10 photographers have been constructing the set inside the pearlman theater. jim rosenfield is the moderator tonight and it will be carrying live on nbc 10 and telemundo 62. i mentioned the chamber of commerce because the organization for the better part of the last year has been holding grassroot community meetings with voters talking about the key issues so what are the key issues in this year's mayor race? we'll talk about that coming up at 4:30. katy zachry, "nbc 10 news." >> it should be a real test for those candidates on stage tonight.

melissa marie bailey is the only republican mayor running in philadelphia. the 36-year-old has a background in business and was a registered democrat until changing her party earlier this year. telemundo 62 and nbc 10 are proud to host tonight's debate. and jim rosenfield will be the moderator. it starts at 7:00 p.m. right here on nbc 10. this morning college basketball has a new national championship, but not an unfamiliar one. after duke rallied to beat wisconsin in the ncaa tournament, duke was down early in the second half and then their freshmen stepped up. four young players combined for 29 players in the final 13 minutes of the game. a bright future for the blue devils. they beat the badgers 68-63. duke's fifth national title. yes, some parties going on on the campus of duke after that.

the students watched there at the indoor arena and are probably still celebrating at this hour this morning. leaving the house today, you will need the umbrella at some point. it is dry but rain is moving into the area. clouds over mount pocano. nice and cloudy in northeast philadelphia. 57 in atlantic city. we'll be watching for shower not only this morning but during the day today and even tonight when we could see heavier downpours. the light showers have started to move in to a few spots. montgomery and lower bucks county. a few rain drops skirting by center city. and rain in central and southern burlington county and into ocean county is just light rain this morning. but there's more on the way. it's lining up to the west. look at the heavier rain to the south. that's a possibility for later today. this morning, for the morning

commute, 6:00, a line of light showers moving through the area moving through philadelphia right around 8:00. and it's a steady rainfall extending to the jersey shore at that hour in reading and allentown. we'll see light rain drops as well. by 9:00 that first line of showers is pushing through the area. and we'll get some breaks where we are not seeing any rain today. the clouds are going to be hanging in there. in spite of that, look at the temperatures nice and mild. cloudy skies, occasional showers and temperatures in the 70s this afternoon. a look at your weekend when i'm back in ten. we'll see how traffic is moving now at ten minutes after 4:00. christine maddela is watching that. looks like an accident out there, christine. >> west oak lane is due to this accident between wister and haines streets. nbc 10 has a crew headed out there, so we'll look at that in a few minutes. interstate 295 at black horse pike, this is the northbound side with the flashing lights. those are construction crews out there blocking the northbound ramp. this is part of the long-term

saucon township yesterday. the victim is 72-year-old patrick chesney and right now it's unclear how he died. carbon monoxide may have killed eight people inside a home in maryland on monday. a coworker called police after a man failed to show up for work. the man and seven children were found dead inside their home. the kids ranging in age from 16 to 6. investigators say the family was using a generator after the power company cut off their electricity. and the environmental protection agency and the justice department are now investigating to see if a delaware family was poisoned by pesticide while on vacation. steve and teresa esmond and two teenager sons were airlifted to the hospital after getting sick in st. john's. teresa is out of the hospital and steve is in critical condition. their sons are still in the

hospital as well. >> this is a powerful neuro toxin that can damage your central nervous system. >> now the exterminating company working there issued a statement saying, quote, we're committed to performing all work we undertake in a way that is safe for our employees, customers and the public end quote. terminix also said they are cooperating with the investigation. the northeast philadelphia man who confessed to killing his wife will appear in court. christopher murray is scheduled for a pretrial hearing later this month. murray told investigators he strangled his wife after an argument last august. her body was found in pennypack park the next day. a philadelphia lawyer accused of paying for sex with a teenager girl numerous times will appear in court today. prosecutors say brian meehan had sex with a teen 20 times at his

office. and it's sentencing day for elementary schoolteacher paul hochschwender. in january he pleaded no contest to charges of sexually abusing nine students in two school districts. the families of two 8-year-old victims said the district did not check his background to show similar abuse complaints in his past. 16 minutes after 4:00 now on to the atlantic casino crisis. the sale of the bankrupt revel casino is expected to be finalized today. yesterday a judge formally approved the $82 million deal between revel and glenn straub. the casino opened in 2012 and cost more than $22 billion to build and sold for 4 cents on the dollar. today a hearing is scheduled in the fight between caesar's atlantic city and the man who wants to build up the pier shops at cedar's.

bart blastine said they took over caesars last fall but we are told he never actually signed the paper to take over caesars. according to a new poll this morning, the majority of people polled in new jersey say senator menendez should keep his job unless convicted. 58% say he should remain in office until proven guilty. 34% want him to leave his job immediately. last week a federal grand jury handed down the indictment on corruption charges for menendez. rutgers eagleton is behind the poll. today governor chris christie will host a town hall meeting in middlesex county. this will be his 134th townhall where he's expected to talk about his proposed budget and answer questions from the audience. kentucky senator rand paul is expected to announce his bid for presidency today. he is the second person or will become the second person behind texas senator ted cruz to announce his campaign.

paul is a first-term republican senator and son of ron paul. getting a warm start this morning, but not necessarily dry. most areas are not seeing rain just yet, but clouds are overhead with rain falling at times during the day. 59 degrees right now with a bit of a breeze out of the south/southwest at 9 miles an hour. definitely warmer than yesterday. so far dry at citizens bank park, but a few showers this morning with the possibility we'll see heavier downpours come through tonight. so keep the umbrella handy. right now the clouds are overhead. satellite imagery will show you that more of those lining up to our west will be moving in with occasional light showers. for the most part we're watching this area of central and southern indiana. that's a possibility of heavy rain for our area tonight. but during the day, future rainfall shows by noontime not much rain a couple hundredths

here and there. the heavier downpours come this evening topping an inch of rain in doylestown and pottstown. those showers could bring us some thunderstorms late tonight and into tomorrow morning. during the day, lots of clouds and occasional light showers with temperatures that will be mild. highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s. it will be cooler this weekend, but we will be drying out saturday morning. the last showers come through saturday morning. then clearing out and 66 degrees on saturday. looks like a really nice day sunday, up to 64. the full seven-day forecast coming up in the next half hour. at 19 minutes after 4:00 christine maddela told us about a crash in west oak lane causing traffic problems this morning. you can see the live picture we have here at the scene. you can see the smashed up car. the car smashed into a utility pole. you can see the pole lying on the ground there. police tell us the driver was knocked unconscious from the impact and taken to einstein

medical center. this is at wister street there. christine maddela is joining us with more on the impact from that crash. christine? yeah for drivers in that area, be aware that you saw the live picture of crews on the scene out there. so stenton avenue is closed near wister and haines streets. we'll monitor that with our crew on the scene. we'll see when they clear that out of the way, but if that's part of your morning commute, be on the lookout. take the alternate around that. we just found out about this crash in lower merion city avenue and north 53rd street not too many cars in that area so it's not detouring traffic too much. if you are traveling on the schuylkill expressway there's a lot of green out here. if you are traveling between the blue route and the vine 12 minutes. the same if you're heading in the westbound direction. and on 295 at black forest pike i'm still watching the construction project right now on the northbound side blocking the exit ramp. chris? in montgomery county today, penndot is hosting a public meeting on a bridge removal plan

in pennsburg. officials are looking to get rid of the main street bridge over the reading railroad track. construction is scheduled to start next year. well, the party is over at one new jersey university. a new ban now in effect at rutgers. we'll tell you what is not allowed for the rest of the semester. and tax freedom day. that's when one person has earned enough money to cover their tax bill. we'll tell you where that is this year and it may surprise you.

for the rest of the spring semester. now this comes after several alcohol-related problems this year including the death of a student. 19-year-old katelyn covack died after attending a party and last month officials shut down parties at rutgers because of a drinking incident. and last week leaders at penn state suspended phialpha phi along with another fraternity for photos of women appearing online. and right now the judge is not releasing details of jerry sandusky's appeal and his attorney is not commenting. a status hearing is scheduled for april 22nd. we should learn more then. sandusky is serving 30 to 60

years for abusing young boys. settling the score for the tax man. this will tell us how long it takes to earn money to cover our taxes. this year we'll hit the mark on april 24th. that is the day when the nation as a whole has earned enough money to pay a total tax bill for the year. the tax foundation says americans will pay $4.8 trillion in taxes this year which is more than individuals will spend on food housing and clothing combined. but tax freedom day does vary depending on where you live. >> pennsylvania's tax freedom day will be on april 25th. one day later of the nation as a whole. >> delaware's tax freedom day is april 20th. in new jersey it's may 13th. the tax foundation has been criticized for their report by some groups who say it is misleading and leads to a false showing of what a typical

team is tracking showers. we have you covered, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm chris cato. we'll find out more on where the showers are now. meteorologist bill henley is here with the first-alert forecast. good morning bill. good morning. what comes with clouds and already a few rain drops in the area, we are watching some showers this morning. heavier downpours will wait until tonight. that's a live view from center city from the comcast center. the radar view shows spotty showers this morning and very light activity. you can see some moving through gloucester and camden counties. a few rain drops moving through parts of philadelphia and into the northern and western suburbs. the steadiest rain is in central burlington county near woodland right now. 60 degrees in wrightstown. northeast philadelphia is in the low 60s. most of the rest of the spots are in the 50s including roxborough at 58 degrees. stand by for a cloudy day and grab the umbrella. scattered light showers this morning with temperatures staying mild. 60
