like watching with my husband. >> it is fun to watch. >> yes, absolutely. coming up right now, our top story -- hillary clinton's announcement that she is running for president. it is expected in just a few short hours. nbc's kristin welker is once again outside of clinton's new campaign headquarters in brooklyn new york for us this morning. kristin, good morning. >> reporter: meterpeter, good morning to you. that's right, we expect that announcement to come down late this afternoon on social media. meanwhile, clinton's campaign aides worked late into the the night here on your campaign headquarters putting the final touches on her highly anticipated second bid for the white house. >> don't you some day want to see a woman president of the united states of america? >> reporter: in just a few hours, hillary clinton will make it official. aides say her campaign message will focus on ways to help the middle class. late saturday she earned an endorsement enemf sorts, from the current commander in chief speaking in panama. >> i think she would be an excellent president. >> reporter: clinton will tweet out a video announcing her candidacy.
8:03 am
unlike 2008 she'll start off by getting up close and personal with voters in key states like iowa and new hampshire. >> she has to find a way to project in small group settings some of the warmth that her friends say she displays in private. >> reporter: while some of her strongest supporters rallied in manhattan saturday not far from her brooklyn headquarters -- >> who are we ready for! >> hilly! >> im >> i've been waiting for hillary for a long time. >> reporter: others are undecided about another clinton in the white house. >> i'm not sure about her veracity. >> reporter: and republicans are gearing up too, releasing this video of their so-called stop hillary command center and rallying in iowa. >> we don't coronate or nominee in the republican party. >> reporter: then there's bill clinton who made the wrong kind of headlines in 2008. he says this time he'll take a back seat role, at least initial

if this race for the democratic nomination essentially over once the announcement comes before it even began? >> honestly it probably is. you hate to assume that this early out. anything can happen. use every one of those cliches that you want. the fact of the matter is unless elizabeth warren or joe biden gets in the race there really isn't a threat to her other than herself. i think her main opponent is herself in this. this announcement tour is kind of like a book tour i think in a month you'll see a whole bunch of democratic hand-wringing. a whole bunch of people will look at the formothers and say maybe joe biden ought to get in. the toughest pry mother opponent she primary motive she has is herself. >> how much wrangling will there be and can there be of former president clinton? >> if they're trying to organize
8:06 am
the campaign much differently. literally there were two camps inside the clinton campaign in 2008. you had people around former president clinton and you had hillary clinton's people. this time they've got someone like john podesta, former chief of staff to bill clinton, senior advisor to president obama. his job is sort of corral the old bill clinton crowd and the former president himself, keep them in the loop. because he was actually kept out of the loop sometimes of campaign decisions. i think that's one way they think they can sort of corral him. >> on the republican side i know you sat down with senator rand paul who says there is a sense the clintons think they're above the law. there's already messaging put out there about personal e-mails. is this going to be the main line of afaq for the republican party? >> i think it is. just look at -- i mean some early polls in swing states colorado virginia and iowa had he asked is hillary clinton honest and trustworthy to be president and she was on the

wrong side of that answer. more people in iowa colorado and virginia said she wasn't honest and trustworthy. the e-mail story gives republicans an entree into that issue. i think this is something she's got to fix. this is a long-term problem for her if she's not careful. >> we also want to quickly get your take on senator marco rubio who is expected to throw his hat in the ring tomorrow. is this helpful or is it more helpful to hillary clinton right now to announce ahead or is it more helpful for marco rubio to be the guy the morning after. >> i think this is a case where the rubio campaign is trying to make lemonade out of lemons. rand paul and ted cruz got a full week of an ability after their announcement and they got almost attention for a full week. marco rubio will not get that. all the focus will be on hillary clinton for most of next week. but, for a moment tomorrow he gets to sort of be the other candidate. he gets to almost look the part of what the nominee might look like. there are a lot of democrats who

and making plans to normalize relations between the two countries. it turned out to be more than just a meet-and-greet too. it went on longer than expected for almost an hour. president obama later gave us some details of his conversation with raul castro after the cameras left. >> it was a candid and fruitful conversation between me and raul castro. we are able to speak honestly about our differences and our concerns in ways that i think offer the possibility of moving the relationship between our two countries in a different and better direction. >> reporter: so the president said the two men did agree to disagree on some things including cuba's human rights record. and castro won't be going home one thing he wanted for cuba to be taken off the list of state sponsors of terror although that is still expected to happen. and president obama said embassies could open fairly quickly in washington and havana. one side of the thaw -- castro
