announcing her second bid for the white house in a sleek online video, hillary clinton declared -- >> i'm hitting the road. >> reporter: and she meant it. just hours after announcing on social media, hillary clinton took to twitter once again. this time revealing her campaign is already on the move tweeting road trip. loaded the van and set off for iowa. met a great family when we stopped this afternoon. many more to come. clinton beginning her road to the white house overnight with the 1,000-plus mile drive from her home in new york to iowa where she's looking for a second chance. she'll kick off her swing through the hawkeye state on tuesday. it was here in 2008 that clinton's presidential hopes first started to crumble when she came in a stunning third behind john edwards and barack obama. >> i congratulate senator obama. >> reporter: critics say back then she campaigned like victory

was inevitable. aides and supporters say this time will be different with small events aiming at one-on-one. >> we have to run a state-by-state campaign. >> i'm back! >> reporter: clinton has already started laying the ground work here attending a democratic event last fall. voters say they want a choice. not a coronation. >> people will come with questions so she needs to be prepared with answers. >> reporter: now, republicans here in iowa and all across the country have already started to wage a strong countercampaign. they are criticizing clinton on a number of issues including using her personal e-mail while serving as secretary of state. that has begun to resonate with some voters. she'll give her first big campaign-style speech some time next month. back to you. >> kristen welker in iowa for us

clinton policy. >> i think the thing is about the clintons is there's a certain sense they think they're above the law. >> hillary clinton represents the failed policies of the past. >> reporter: clinton is upstaging marco rubio launching his campaign today in miami. as for bill clinton, a huge political asset who still produced some bad headlines last time around he says he'll be a backstage adviser for now. tell that to "snl." >> hillary would make a great president. and i would make an even greater first dude. this election is about you. i don't want to hog your limelight. i am leaving. look at me go. bye. i'm gone. >> aren't we such a fun, approachable dynasty? >> reporter: and again, hillary clinton heading to iowa for a two-day swing starting tomorrow. a swing across the hawkeye state, a state she came in third

in 2008 behind obama and john edwards. >> it will be interesting to see how that pans out. all right. thanks andrea. >> hoda thank you very much. chuck todd is nbc's political director and moderator of "meet the press." good to see you. >> good morning, sir. >> what's her message? if the hillary clinton could write the headline on the front panl of major newspapers this morning, what would they write? >> everything they want to be over the next six days everyday americans. you're going to hear her say it. she wants to be about economic fairness. that's the one issue. notice there was nothing on foreign policy nothing on making washington work. she wants to be an everyday economic fairness. and we'll hear a lot about grandmother. >> if she wants to make it she's going to try to make it about everyday americans and average families. the republicans are going to try to make it about one thing. hillary clinton. because she comes to this position with a lot of political

baggage. even personal baggage. who's going to win that battle? >> i think it's tough for her. it really depends on who the republican is. if jeb bush is her opponent they're going to have a tough time making it about the past. if it's marco rubio -- we had a poll that said candidates think her policy are more about the past than a new direction. >> you asked does she have a vision for the future. 51% say it's a return to policies of the past. vision needed for the future 44%. what about inspiring young voters? we hear so much about the need to get those young voters out. barack obama did it twice. can hillary clinton at this stage of her career do the same thing? >> think about this. people under the age of 38 have never seen anybody with the name clinton on a general election presidential ballot. so it is all about reintroducing herself to people under the age of 40. now, what the clinton campaign

will tell you is the idea of electing a first woman president is what inspires young americans. they say that is the key to unlocking millennials. >> you mentioned rubio expected to announce on the republican side. his candidacy today. how much impact does he have? >> he could have big impact. rubio as a republican nominee is somebody that scares them. by the way his candidacy today, hillary clinton's announcement today. put it together it's a bad week to be jeb bush. we're bringing up dynasties. that's not good in the republican primary. and bush so popular in florida he could not chase rubio out of the race. >> chuck todd. good to have you here. senator rubio will join us live tomorrow on the show. there is more today in the deadly shooting in south carolina. we hear what michael slager had to say moments after the incident. here's gabe gutierrez. >> reporter: on a portion of the

dash cam video from slager's patrol car, he can be heard talking to a senior officer about what to expect following the shooting. the officer suggests he jot down his thoughts once his adrenaline stops pumping. slager responds with a laugh. >> it's bumping. >> oh yeah. >> reporter: then later a voice believed to be slager a speaking on the phone. >> hey everything's okay? i just shot somebody. >> reporter: slager said scott grabbed his taser but three days later slager was charged with murder. he has not yet entered a plea. meanwhile this morning, north charleston is a community trying to heal. >> we've had a hard week. >> reporter: it was a week that followed the shooting of walter scott by michael slager and ended with hugs and hand shakes from the mayor. >> i have seen so many and gotten so many hugs thanking me for doing the right thing and making them proud of their community. sometimes out of diversity can

come growth. >> reporter: gabe gutierrez, nbc . >> all right. tamron is in for natalie. and unfortunately you've got news of another tragic police shooting. >> yeah. this one stunning as well. good morning, everyone. officials in tulsa, oklahoma are investigating the fatal shooting of a man trying to flee an undercover gun deal. on sunday police released video of the incident that took place earlier this month. app volunteer deputy said he thought he was pulling out his taser but mistakenly grabbed his gun shooting the suspect who later died. prosecutors are considering whether to file charges against the reserve deputy. at least ten cars of a freight train derailed and overturned during the night in colorado springs. some of the cars carrying raw ammonia fertilizer. no reports of injury but residents nearby were told to stay indoors. one person is dead after a lamborghini crash at a popular walt disney attraction.

they went to the exotic driving course after a driver slammed into the guardrail. the passenger and driving instructor died at the scene. scary moments recently for pilot and passengers in england. high cross winds made it very scary as planes tried to take off there earlier this month. some of the planes ended up nearly sideways but amazingly everyone is okay. you see it the cross winds. imagine being on that flight. not a good feeling, to say the least. and it was a frightening scene sunday in buffalo, new york. an electrical fire underground triggered explosions. a manhole . the "x" factor that could have a big impact on her mom's campaign. hillary clinton's running for president, but she won't be doing it alone. plenty of attention will be on the woman who may become america's first daughter for the second time around. >> everyday americans need a champion. i want to be that champion. >> reporter: soon after the announcement daughter chelsea was quick to tweet, very proud of you, mom. it's the first of what will likely be many gestures of support from the younger clinton during the 2016 campaign. in the new issue of "elle" magazine chelsea discusses the importance of a first female president. saying when equal hasn't included gender, there is a fundamental challenge there that i believe having a first female president will help resolve. that fight for equality is one of her focuses in her work as the vice chair of clinton foundation. and the no ceilings initiative. and the argument her mother is

the right candidate to achieve that she'll be campaigning for her in the coming months. as a 20-something she was frequently by her mother's side during the 2008 cycle. >> would i consider dating a mccain supporter? i'm very proud to report that my boyfriend is supporting my mom. >> reporter: but now as the 35-year-old mother to her own daughter charlotte, she stepped out of her parents' shadow and critics say could play a crucial role for the former secretary of state who this time around is also a grandmother. >> maybe the best thing chelsea clinton has given to her mother is a grandchild. it allows hillary clinton to be seen as more of a normal everyday american. you'll hear the name charlotte on the trail a lot out of hillary clinton's mouth. >> reporter: as for former president bill clinton, he says he'll take the role of backstage adviser. at least for now he's expected to stay out of the spotlight. as for chelsea herself, there's

danielle and alexander made headlines earlier this year when they were investigated and charged with unsubstantiated neglect after another stranger saw their kids walking home alone and also called police. on the "today" show they defended their parenting style. >> we're amazed this is a national conversation because we're just doing what our parents did which was normal one generation ago. >> reporter: in this latest incident the parents said they began searching when their kids didn't come home at the agreed 6:00 p.m. it wasn't until 8:00 p.m. danielle claims that child services called to let them know they were in custody. a few hours later, the kids are home the mom posted on facebook. cps finally let us see them at 10:30 and after making us sign a safety plan let us bring them home. so far no new charges have been filed but already the courts of social media is lighting up with those ready to defend or condemn

dishes full of flavor and easy to put together. katie lee is co-host of the kitchen. good to see you. >> good morning. >> before we get to your recipe you're going to talk skillet. everyone has one or two of these. hi how are you? >> not everyone. >> hoda is sitting here. most people have one or two of these. are they created equal? >> no. everyone should have an iron skillet though. they're really inexpensive and they can last longer than a life time if you take care of it properly. >> all shapes and sizes. everybody talks about you need to season the skillet. how do you do that? >> most skillets are sold preseasoned but it's good to still continue to season it. so what you do, because cast iron is really porous you need to seal it with some fat. pour oil in. and then wipe it and put it into the oven for about an hour. then when it comes time to clean it that's important because you

don't want to use soap. this is kind of an untraditional cleaning meth. >> because that reverses everything you've done. >> yes. what you want to do is give it a quick wipe as soon as you're done using it while it's still warm. if something's stuck, take some salt and put it on there and use a soft sponge and scrub it off. then give it a quick rinse. moisture is the enemy here. you want to be sure it's bone dry when you put it away. give it another rub of oil, put it back in the oven for a couple of minutes and that will continue to season it and it will eventually become nonstick which a great. >> you are making something that screams summer. this is a blueberry peach skillet cobbler. >> exactly. i feel like after this endless winter i am praying for an endless summer. this takes me there. using an iron skillet, if you want to dump in the peaches. >> all of them? >> they're not in season.

do you use frozen? >> you can use frozen peaches. just thaw them. you can use any fruit you like. mix in some lemon juice there for me. >> got it. >> and i'm going to make the batter. i've got some flour here and some sugar. this is super simple. you probably have all the ingredients in your pantry. baking powder and a little bit of salt. you just mix that up. and then you want to add the milk. >> sure. you've got an egg there? >> no this is melted butter. put that in there. and this gets mixed up. and you'll see it's like a thicker batter. and just mix, mix mix. you want to get it kind of smooth but not over-mixed. just a little bit clumpy. then you dollop it right on top just like that. >> why do you have water boiling over there? >> the water boiling, this is a trick my grandma taught me. so you take sugar and corn starch and you just mix that up

and this goes on top of the batter and then you pour boiling water over it. >> why is that? >> the boiling water hits this corn starch and it starts to cook in the oven with the corn starch and makes a thick syrup. bring that over here. i put about half a cup. and this is going to -- see how it goes into the corn starch. this is going to be our syrup. >> one of the good things about skillets it goes right into the oven. >> it's oven to table presentation. the skillet stays hot. >> you cook it for how long? >> about 55 minutes to an hour. see how it's got that nice crunch to it? >> hoda's got some over there. give it a try. >> i will. >> you want some ice cream? >> sure. just a little. this kind of doubles as breakfast. >> katie. delicious. >> seems like she doubted you at first. >> i did not. >> you're a tough judge. tell me what you think.

separated from her mother. she did not die. she was separated for reasons that are still unclear at this point. but on thursday, melanie had a chance to meet the brother she never knew she had and then she met her mom. >> oh my god! oh my god! [ screaming ] >> so she spent her entire life thinking that her parents had given her away. her mother spent her life that her daughter had died. melanie lived in oregon. her mom lied in st. louis. the family now plans to hire an investigator to get on this case. attorneys investigating this. the hospital actually closed in 1979. so it's unclear what happened there. but apparently nel knee's children started to go on

and this morning we may learn why the philadelphia woman accused of abandoning her quadriplegic son in the woods is in the hospital in maryland. investigators say nyia parler will be extradited back to philadelphia and charged once she's released. that could happen as early as today. investigators say parler dumped her 21-year-old disabled son in the woods at cobbs creek. her son was discovered by a passer buy five days later. we'll have a full hour of news coming up in 30 minutes. get the latest news and weather using the nbc app.

the laughing cow. reinvent snacking. nbc 10 breaking news. right now at 11:00, we're following breaking news from north carolina. an official says one person is dead and a community college campus is on lockdown as tharts search authorities search for a man with a gun. information is still trickling into our newsroom but here is what we know right now. there were reports of an active shooter on the campus at around 8:00 this morning. authorities confirm one person was shots in the area of the college library. we continue to follow this breaking news and we'll bring you updates as we get them into our newsroom. and we're also following breaking news this morning from montgomery county. two people were electrically shocked at the king of prussia mall. this happened in a rede
