"nbc 10 news" starts now. first a police chase, then gunfire followed by a hit and run. we're live with new information on a wild night in one montgomery county community. plus get ready for a rainy morning commute to end your week. it's raining now in fact as we look at "nbc 10" first alert radar. more wet weather ahead for later today but we really think you'll like what's around the corner for saturday. good mornings, this is "nbc 10 news" for this saturday. i'm chris cato. let's begin with meteorologist bill henley. light showers for some people right? >> for the most part. it's a wide area of light rainfall that is moving through to begin with. it's not going to be an all day rainfall.

round one this morning, and there's a cloudy view of center city. very wet rain pushing to the east. the steadier rain is to the south of wilmington, north of dover moving into sal lem county in new jersey. those are some moderate showers pushing off to the northeast right now. nothing terribly heavy in the area. in salem it's coming down a bit heavier than the rest. umbrellas are going up. grab one, you wouldn't need it all day. 6:00 there will be some showers around. 57 degrees. by 9:00 cloudy skies and a warmup. be in the middle 60s at noontime today. it's my pleasure to say for the first time it's time to check in with first alert traffic, jessica boyington. >> we'll start out on center city on the vine street expressway. we have ongoing construction closing it right around broad street and on the schuylkill

expressway. i was caught on this. you head up to spring guard deference, make a right there, you can access the schuylkill expressway from that point. as for the wet roadways moving along just fine so far. no problems with any of our speeds but you can see roadways possibly a little bit slippery if you're headed southbound from woodhaven road. schuylkill expressway no problems and no problems on 422. chris. 4:02 now. new from overnight. new information on a police chase montgomery county that ended with an officer going to the hospital. that officer opened fire on a suspect just before the suspect's vehicle hit the officer. it started around 9:00 last night with a chase in lower potsco township. it ended at high street in pottstown. matt, the driver who allegedly hit that officer is in custody, right? >> reporter: that is correct,

chris. the officer we're told is doing well recovering from his injuries. here's what we've been able to learn from the police chief in lower pottsgrove township. police were pursuing a man and they get to the intersection of high and moser in pottstown. when the officer gets out and feels threatened he fires two shots at the suspect. the suspect drives off and in doing so hits the officer with his car. some things that are still under investigation, why the suspect was being stopped in the first place and also the suspect has a gunshot wound. he was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. police are trying to figure out if the injury came from the officer's gun or someone else. that suspect, as we mentioned, was picked up a short time later. coming up in 30 minutes we're going to hear from the police chief. i'm matt delucia "nbc 10 news.." also new from overnight, philadelphia police shot a

suspect who was holding a gun in a crowd. police tell us the man took off running after officer noticed him holding a gun. the officer shot him in the leg. he's in stable condition facing charges. breaking news just into "nbc 10" about the pope's visit to the united states in september. the vatican now says pope francis is considering adding a stop in cuba to his trip. now no official decision has been made. this is something they're considering. the pope is credited with helping with the relationship with the u.s. and cuba. happening today, a judge will officially sentence a man who murdered philadelphia police lieutenant moses walker junior. rafael jones knows he will spend the rest of his life in prison. officer walker was a 19 year veteran of the police force. he served as deacon of his

church in north philadelphia. he was 40 years old at the time of his murder. in august 2012 walker was wearing plain clothes walking to a bus stop in philadelphia when jones and another man tried to rob him and shot him to death. jones police was sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison after testifying against him. the family of a south philadelphia fruit vendor is holding a vigil tonight to remind people to keep looking for his killer. don ly had just finished filling his truck. someone stabbed him and slit his throat. it happened two years ago tomorrow. ly's father had no known enemies and police don't believe robbery was the motive because the wallet was still in his pocket with cash in it. this video shows the suspect casually walking away. there's a $25,000 reward for information leading to his

arrest. philadelphia police say if the driver suspected of killing a child doesn't turn herself in they'll go get her. an suv hit and killed abdul wilson on monday in kingsessing. the lawyer for the woman who was driving that suv told "nbc 10" that they are cooperating with the investigation and she will turn herself in, but so far she has not done so. and philadelphia police are still looking for the driver in another hit and run that killed a child this week. yesterday 2-year-old david alacea jr. died of his injuries. relatives vented their anger at the driver who never stopped. >> shame on you for just going right by here two innocent lives, taking one and you're out there like nothing. >> family members tell us they hope they'll do the right thing and surrender. this is a 2006 to 2008 white

cloudy skies and 56. light rain in philadelphia and wilmington and temperatures they're mild. warmer than yesterday. in the middle 50s right now. this was a dry view of the last couple mornings from blue mountain into the pocono mountains but the rain is light in the mountains as well and it's going to be with us to start with but not all day. you see the light rain moving through philadelphia. a bit steadier into salem county and cumberland county. it's falling at a rate of 1/3 of an inch. look at the scattered showers to the west for lancaster, berks, lehigh valley. northeast maryland as well. if you're leaving the house you'll need an umbrella. keep it handy, too. even though that first line of showers is moving through. you can see more wet weather on the way. a chance we'll see some scattered showers later this afternoon. after the showers start to move out, 8:00 in the morning in the upper 50s in philadelphia. the rain will push off shore. mostly cloudy skies at noontime.

street, make a right on to vine street local, spring garden and access the schuylkill westbound from that direction. if you are headed on the schuylkill expressway, this is what you'll encounter. city avenue in the westbound lanes, just a tad damp but not a lot of volumes. 12 minutes if you are headed westbound from the vine into the blue route. as for the rest of the majors, everything is fine. 95 no problems. 429 from the schuylkill expressway an eight minute trip. vandals hit a local baseball complex leaving little league games at risk of being canceled. next, who jumped into action to make sure the games could go on. next new video of a botched landing in the atlantic ocean and what may have caused a rocky ending to the space mission.

we have new information about five people found dead after a standoff and shooting in phoenix. police say all of the victims are related. three are men, two are women. investigators believe a family dispute led to a shooting and the hours long barricade situation. officers found out about the shooting when someone inside that home left with two children and called 911. dispatchers heard gunshots in the background. happening today, an ohio man is expected to plead not guilty to terror charges involving isis. prosecutors accuse him of traveling to syria last year being trained in weapons and explosives and then returning home to plot an attack. he was born in somalia. his brother was killed in battle last year after joining al qaeda in syria. this weekend marks two decades since the oklahoma city

bombing. victims and their families will hold the annual remembrance ceremony. the exact day, 20 years ago, 168 people died including 19 children. people who were there that day say they are still pushing forward. >> basal skull fracture broken nose, and six fractures along each jaw line a ruptured spleen, both legs severely broken from the legs down. >> timothy mcveigh and terry nichols were tried and convicted. mcvai was executed. nichols received multiple life prison sentences. a judge says he will not reduce the charges against three friends from bucks county accused of attacking a gay couple in center city. they were asked to reduce the charges. prosecutors say two men and a woman beat that couple so badly that one of the victims ended up in the hospital with several

broken bones. kathryn knot kevin her ri began and phillip williams are expected back in court. a montgomery county contractor is the latest to face charges involving pepenndot. he's the president of an engineering and survey business. this scheme cost taxpayers millions of dollars. delaware state police are looking for vandals who ran sacked a little league baseball stadium wednesday night. they found shattered glass, an open storage shed port a potties pushed over and more. >> they just appeared to be having fun breaking things. >> the vandals cost several hundred dollars in damage and state police are not saying whether there are any suspects. three charter schools in new

castle county are having trouble finding students to meet their enrollment requirements. delaware schools are placing them on formal review. in order to receive the proper state funding each school has to reach 80% of its enrollment goals. the state will decide in june whether they can remain open. >> pray for what? >> "nbc 10" was there as protesters rallied outside philadelphia school district. they're upset to merge kensington high school with kensington academy. the school district didn't notify them until monday. >> they talk about us being the future but they didn't give us what we need to be good and great. >> they're holding a public hearing on the plan in two weeks. a judge threw out a lawsuit challenging trenton's paid sick

around here. these are the northbound lanes here. you can see ongoing construction taking out the two right hand lanes there. not setting anybody back. route 38 into black horse pike 13 minutes. 12 minutes headed northbound. we have a photographer headed out to the scene on west oak lane out on cheltenham avenue is closed due to the accident on 19th street. for the time being we're giving you the ogontz avenue choice. closed from broad street to the schuylkill expressway. that will be until 5:00 this morning. what you're going to do is head off the broad street exit make a right on to vine street local, pass that closure and head to spring garden and access the schuylkill expressway westbound from that point. as for the rest of the remainders, everything doing fine. schuylkill expressway no problem. only 8 minutes on 422 eastbound from 29 to the schuylkill expressway. jessica, that accident in west oak lane, we do now have a live picture of that scene

there. this is on cheltenham avenue. we told you about this accident. you see light rain falling there and you see the car that was flipped over there leaning up against a tree it looks like. at this point a tree pushed against a building on cheltenham avenue at the intersection of cheltenham avenue and 16. at least one person was injured. we'll bring you any new information as it comes in on this accident. look at this new video showing the space x failed landing. this is the view from the deck in the atlantic ocean. you see the rocket tip over and explode. before the failed landing the rocket sent its cargo capsule to the international space station. it's expected to alive with new technology including the espresso machine. no one injured in the rocket landing by the way. united airlines is now

kids are get thissing drunk using hand sanitizer. it's a growing problem across the u.s. hand sanitizer contains up to 70% ethel alcohol which is 180 proof liquor. that's twice the amount of an average vodka. medical professionals say that high content of alcohol is potentially deadly. 4:26. the chemical that sickened a wilmington family on vacation in the virgin islands last month is now being linked to faulty usage in puerto rico. the family of four was exposed to methyl bromide. they sprayed a neighboring unit. the pesticide that made the family sick came from licensed workers. the teens are in critical condition still and the parents are home. the spca will open an adoption park. it closed last month after an outbreak of respiratory disease in several dogs. the dogs are healthy and ready
