turbulence. nbc's tom costello covers aviation for us. good morning him tell us ability this flight. >> reporter: good morning, savannah passengers on board this flight describe it as some of the worst turbulence they've ever experienced. it's so bad the turbulence went and on and it couldn't land. >> it feels like king king picked up the plane and shook it like no tomorrow. >> repor terrifying moments in the sky wednesday, after delta flight flew to newark was diverted after encountering a dangerous weather system. the plane first approached newark but was unable to land because of the storm. then it went on to nearby kennedy airport, where bad weather prevented the landing. the flight allowed them to make an mortgages landing in boston 200 miles away from its original destination. passengers describing it as the most turbulent flight they have taken. >> the winds were fe until nal

to go out and investigate. these are tornadoes in texas near stillwater creek water i should say. again, we had no injury thankfully. also take a look at some of this rain coming down. this is corpus christi, texas. outside the homes it turned into rivers. i mean they are completely inundated. we will see more heavy downpours today and more likely tomorrow. let's go to the map and give you what's going on. right now you will see delhi, the storms will be back later today and on into tonight and even more so tomorrow. so here's where we got the risk of strong storms today. about 14 million people 13 million people at rest. we have an isolated tornado risk from texas on into louisiana. now we start to see that upper level low we have been talking about the last couple of days.

it makes its way out dallas texas tomorrow. you will be under the gun with a tornado threat that continues to really increase and, in fact you can see, we got wichita into new orleans, but the enhanced risk is in central texas into louisiana, kansas into missouri we are looking at strong storms 41 million people tomorrow are under the risk for tornadoes and strong storms. tomorrow is y we are really most concerned about. >> thank you very much. here we go again, another apparent blunder by the secret service making headlines this morning. a few report that shows that agency delayed fixing a broken alarm system at former president george h. wvenlt bush's home. >> that delay lasting more than a year. national correspondent peter alexander is at the white house with this. what can you tell us? >> reporter: savannah good morning to you. here is that new report from the homeland inspector general released through the night. according to report, a secret t reported

five years ago at george h.w. bush's home was too old and recommended it be replaced. but secret service officials at the time denied that request. it eventually stopped working altogether in december 2013. the alarm wasn't replaced for 13 months. during that time the secret service added another agent to control the property. still, of course it's raising new concerns about security at former president's homes. the morning i spoke with a secret service spokesperson who tells many ethe agency has already taken steps to fully address the attorney general's investigations. >> peter alexander, thanks. let us turn to france now where officials are reportedly searching for accomplices in that foiled plots to attack churches in paris. the main suspect over the weekend. we are also learning another person is in custody as well. nbc's kelly kobe cobiella has the

latest. >> reporter: investigators aren't saying what her connection to this plot might be. today the french prime minister said the main suspect sid ahmed glum did not act alone. >> reporter: thidz this home the frenchnyiend nigerian. the french prime minister said today they've thwarted five terrorist attacks since january. islamist militants killed 17 people at charily hebdo magazine at a jewish market. security are watching potential suspects. he was not one of them. >> security services were lucky to catch him. even though he was on the radar, he was not seen as a particular threat. >> reporter: glum was arrested outside his apartment sunday morning after accidentally shooting himself in the leg then

calling paramedics. french prosecutors say his attacks were imminent. they say he was in contact with someone perhaps in syria who was urging him to carry out the attacks sunday that may have helped entertain weapons. according to newspapers the french police are looking for the person who supplied the suspect with a car stopped with weapons. nbc has not been able to independently confirm that. matt savannah, today the french prime d never has the threat of terrorist attacks been so high. >> a sobering assessment kelly, thank you very much. minetime prosecutors are expected to rest their case in the boston marathon trial this after jurors heard more emotional testimony about the lingering effects of the attack. nbc's pete williams is covering the trial for us. pete good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah good morning. with prosecutors almost done it

daughter again. >> reporter: and that gesture dzhokhar tsarnaev made in a holding cell, a deputy u.s. marshall said he saw it while watching a under surveillance camera. but defence lawyers played the video it came from. he steps up on a bench, gets closer to the camera makes a peace sign and a gesture. the lawyer says he wasn't sending a message, he was looking at himself in the housing treating it like a mirror. prosecutors may rest their case and defense lawyers will start putting on their witnesses monday. this case could go to the injurejury in two weeks. >> thank you. let's take a look at another closely watched court hearing t. attorneys for john hinckley jr., a man that shot the president and three others back arguing for his full-time release from a mental hospital. nbc's andrea mitchell has the latest on this. >> reporter: hi matt. good morning. john hinckley is permitted to

spend 17 days a month with his mother in virginia. now doctors say he should be released full time with conditions. the government is fighting back. the man who tried to kill president reagan is back in court this morning. his lawyers argue he is clinically ready to be released from a mental institution. 34 years after he shot the president, a d.c. policeman and press secretary james brady, in court, his brother and sister testified he is cured, ready to be freed to live with their 89-year-old mother in williamsburg virginia after years of unsupervised visits. hinckley's brother says he takes the conditions for his current condition seriously, sighting him to move a movie they were seeing seeing jody foster on screen. current health workers agree he's not a threat. >> i don't think you know that he's a dang tear anyone.

>> reporter: but a government lawyer told a judge now is not the time to release the reigns noting hinckley has written to other killers ted bundy and charles manson and recently lied saying he was at the movies when he was at a book store looking at assassinations. former reagan aide was there. he helped save jim brady's life. >> i think it's important to remember what this man did. he shot the president of the united states. he condemned jim brady to a lifetime sentence in a wheelchair. a life of pain. i feel he's a threat to society if he should be released from treatment without supervision of any kind. >> reporter: and this footnote there was such a public outcry when the jury accepted hinckley's insanity defense, congress and many laws changed laws to make it much harder now to plead not guilty by reason of insanity a. final decision now may not come for months. >> andrea we will keep watching that. thank you very much. a new twist in that headline making arrest in arizona.

walking down the street. >> i wanted to stop the threat. that was the only thing in my mind we need to stop this threat immediately. >> cleared of criminal charges, the officer was back on the job. but the man's lawyer says this was excessive force. this morning the tape and officer's defense, video from multiple angles with just as many opposeing views. miguel almaguer nbc news los angeles. >> after months of delays the u.s. senate is expected to vote today on lorretta lynch to become the new attorney general. a final vote could take place this afternoon at 166 days no other nominee for attorney general had to wait the long for senate confirmation. if confirmed, lynch will be the first african-american woman to hold the position. there was a second scare in the air involving a sky west flight from chicago to connecticut. the plane operati as united express, descended quickly and had to make an emergency landing in buffalo after three

passengers lost flight. they checked out the passengers they are all okay. officials are trying to figure out what happened. there is no indication of pressurization problems on that plane. a former iowa law maker has been acquitted of sexually abusing his wife who suffered from dementia. they found him not guilty of abusing his wife. he was accused of having sex with her after being told shelves no longer mentally capable of consenting do you to her alzheimer's disease. the case sparked a discussion nationwide whether people with dementia have a capacity to consent to sex. a federal appeals court reversed a conviction against barry bonds. they ruled it was not material to the government's investigation into illegal stroisd distribution. bonds said in a statement he is humbled. and some amazing video out of chile this morning.

you can choose to keep some things private. why did you decide to make this public? >> sure. i think there is a time when you have to decide whether there is a good teaching moment. i think that was one of them. >> reporter: eight years ago michelle and travis welcomed a son into this world but very early their child was insisting she was a girl. >> she chose her name when she was very young. it just felt right to her. >> how old was she when she did that? >> two-and-a-half, 3. >> very young. >> very young. >> mellissa drew pictures of herself as a princess with long hair and one halloween, a family friend gave her a dark wig. she was 6. >> she put it on and started posing realizeing this matches. >> when you looked in the mirror what did you see? >> i saw the person who i really was. >> so last summer her parents sent an e-mail to family and friends asking her to accept her as mellissa and they did.

advice for parents out there. >> it's just like your child or friends be who they are. >> that's pretty simple right? >> mm-hmm. >> ah kate let's bring from dr. michelle forcier a professor at brown medical school and director of the gender and health services clinic at hasbro' children's hospital and a model and advocate. gina i'm curious, your response and reaction to that story? >> you know it reminds me so much of my childhood. i feel like i want to hug mellissa and her family. i think transgender kids and their family are courageous and beautiful. that's why these stories need to be told more and more so we can create this ripple for authenticity and love. >> these children are so articulate. yet they're so little. can you help us to understand what it feels like to be in a body that doesn't feel like the one that you feel in your mind. >> sure. i remember growing up in the

philipines at 3 years old. i knew something was different. when i was 5 years old that's when i first expressed that. i always wore the tee-shirt in my head. i would walk around the house and remember my mom ask me how come you always wear that tee-shirt in your head mom, this is my hair. i'm a girl. at that moment i self identified. i self determined. in a little context here. i grew up phillipines we don't have access to therapy. i think the determination and lover of my family they supported me. >> i read this for some children it's like a lightning bolt. for others it's slower. either way, it has to be a couldn't fusing time for the young child. we're talking, 2, 3, 4, 5-years-old and their parents. >> the 2, 3, 45-year-olds are often so authentic and not worried about what other people think. they spontaneously disclose and say this is who i am.

then kids go to school and they realize what's cool and what gets mom and dad's attention and what gets mom and dad's approval and a lot of the kids shut down closer to the school age and go under ground. then we see a lot of kids who are still thinking about their gender re-emerge in puberty because you can't avoid it when you hit puberty years. >> i think that early age has people thinking inward and what would i do? because we are, after all, talking about very little children and i think people wonder should you let the child dictate? how do they really know? what if they change their mind later? this raises issues no matter how loving and supportive you want to be. >> if you look at gender development, child development. kids figure out their gender as as 18 months 2-years-old. many are doing what is natural.

the issue is the brain which is our real source of gender may be at odds or different than what their body is. it's confusing for us as adults and for kids wait a minute your body is not the same gender as your brain. that's where i think kids start to worry. kids know who they are. >> we asked a question on today.com. if your 4-year-old daughter insisted she was a boy. would you support her transition and let her live publicly as a boy? 43% said i would wait until they're were older. 27% said that's not something i would support. any of that surprise you? >> well i think you really have to support a kid with utmost support to transgender kids. in my personal experience we didn't have access to these therapy. but because of the love and support of my family there is this notion of self

determination we need to talk about. self determination affects a transperson's wellness well being and if that doesn't relate to the culture and policies it has a direct correlation to violence and discrimination later in life. >> it's a question for the doctor too, here you have 43% of our audience saying can you postpone a decision? well could you? what's the harm in doing that? >> that's a great question. because the harm is most often in not doing much. all folks who said we waited until they were teenagers. they have developed into their gender breasts, big shoulders and hair and we've missed an opportunity to help them pass and be more in line body and brain with the gender they identify with. so earlier is better. these are reversible. no one has to make a life committing decision. there is no surgery, but to let your kid find that safe space so that they can be authentic. it's so powerful.

on board are talking about the turbulence that they experienced. take a listen. >> you could feel like king kong picked up the plane and shook it like there was no tomorrow. the winds were phenomenal and so the plane was being budgeted from left to right up and down and then it was around and around out to sea back to sea. >> yes, we jumped out of our seats. we had our seatbelts on but the bump it was kind of like a roller coaster ride. >> they said a lot of people on board were getting sick, nauseous. >> this happened as that front was coming through. we had 45-mile-per-hour wind gusts, friday, 75-mile-per-hour wind gusts. >> it's scary to be in a plane when you are in that. also, there was another emergency landing yesterday, this was a sky west flight from chicago to connecticut. it had to land in buffalo after three passengers lost consciousness. >> wow! >> the pilot descended the plane 24,000 feet in just minutes. so they were flying a little

over 35000 feet. they got down to about 10,000, which is considered safe for pressurization, that's when the air is breathable again. they thought there was an air cabin pressure on board. they debucked that. officials are trying to figure out what exactly happened. why these passengers passed out. that's what forced the pilot to make such a rash decision. he had to get the plane to such safe levels. >> the theory, you think they were able eliminate pressurization, what is the theory? what happened? >> i guess they were only able to figure it out after they landed. they looked at the plane and thought there was a cabin pressure problem maybe a door leaking air or leaking something. >> it didn't impact everyone on the flight? >>. but three people passed out. so few are the pilot on that plane something is wrong we got to get this to safe levels. >> the training you have a plane with three people and their reaction is severe enough to land it.

unlikely. security experts are concerned a determined hacker may try to make this happen. the fbi warned airlines to be on the lookout for suspicious activity trying to connect cables or wires to an entertainment system. >> you should be worried about that without the wifi warning or unusual parts to the airplane seats. >> we had a piece on earlier today that talked about that. we had a hacker who said he was able to on united able to do this united says, look they've booted him off from flying ever again on tear airline saying that their systems are walled off and this is theoretical but not practical. >> nevertheless the fbi is warning, which means they at least acknowledge them. to some degree, there is a concern there. >> it's better to be safe than sorry. >> you no you have to think of everything, right? everything could potentially be a weapon or be used as a way to take it down.
