"nbc 10" breaking news. >> we're following two breaking stories in philadelphia right now. first, the hunt for a gunman who murdered a restaurant delivery driver and how the victim died trying to find help. plus a second suspect wanted for shooting a police officer last night. we're live on what triggered the shootout. and the work week ending on a cold note on this friday morning. a live look at beach avenue on cape may. it's chillier outside than it was in yesterday morning and in some parts of the area you may be waking up to frost on the ground. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today" on this friday. i'm chris cato. a frosty friday. say it ain't so. let's begin with meteorologist bill henley and the first alert forecast.

bill, the temperatures plummeted last night. >> this he have come down. it's windy, too. the wind is blowing. the temperatures feel even colder. the wind chills are in the 20s and 30s this morning. live view from center city. 18-mile-an-hour wind blowing. pocono mountains, winds at 20-mile-an-hour. cold air for us. skies are clear and the temperatures have dropped into the 30s for pottstown and allentown, 37 degrees. 39 in millville and trenton and 41 at philadelphia international. stand by to bundle up. 6:00, 37 degrees. 41 at 9:00. upper 40s, not a big warm up today. sunshine will be bright. winds are 17 miles an hour at noontime. we'll go through it hour by hour with the future weather coming back in ten minutes. right now let's check back in with first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> we're starting things off on a quiet note. a good thing. the vine street expressway

around 24th street what we're dealing with mostly is road work and construction. you can see losing a few lanes. these are the eastbound lanes and westbound you can't see. we are losing the right hand shoulder. you can see set being it back not too much under five minutes if you're headed westbound from the 95 on the schuylkill two minutes going the opposite direction. the rest of the drive times you can see everything free and clear on 95 the schuylkill and no problems on the blue route. we are following breaking news in philadelphia where a food delivery man was shot and killed overnight. he died trying to drive himself to the hospital. this all started around 11:00 in the crescentville part of the city. the shooting happened on the north hill creek drive and he died on adam street. >> reporter: just behind this fence you can see the victim's car that crashed into a utility pole while the man was trying to get away from the area.

the 49-year-old man was making a delivery of chinese foot to the 500 block of hill creek part at 10:30. either while he was still in the car or just getting out, 12 gunshots come in his direction and at least one hit him in the shoulder. that's when he tried to speed away. he crosses adams avenue goes up an embankment and crashed into that utility poll. police and paramedics found the man unconscious inside the car. he was pronounced dead on arrival at einstein medical center. as we take another look out here, police are holding the scene. as of now police are looking at this as a possible robbery. official motive has not been determined. that's the latest here live in crescentville. matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." also breaking overnight, philadelphia police have arrested a second suspect wanted for shooting a police officer. that officer confronted two drug suspects at 51st and master

street around 10:15. one of the men shot the officer. "nbc 10's" katy zachry is live. first off, what's the officer's condition this morning? >> reporter: according to people who are close to him, chris. he is doing well. he's in good spirits. his name is daniel costic. he was brought to penn present around 11:00 after he was shot in the right arm by the suspect. high ranking officers who rush the to the hospital say he is in stable condition and in good spirits. he was on bike patrol when they approached a van investigating someone inside for possible drug activity. the van took off but officer costic found the man in question on a nearby street. the suspect told him, i don't want to have to do this before shooting officer costic who returned fire and hit the suspect. we did ask police for a condition on the suspect. they did not immediately provide

"comcast sportsnet" shot this video for us. the drivers and passengers all made it out safely. also new from overnight, a woman accused of abandoning her disabled son in the woods now officially faces an attempted murder charge. a philadelphia judge arraigned nyia parler on sifrl charges. she left her 21-year-old paraplegic son alone in the woods for five days while she went to maryland to see her boyfriend. police brought her back yesterday. a judge will decide if a man accused of shooting his father on the schuylkill expressway will be charged. he shot his father in the head while he was driving in rush hour traffic. corbin was upset because his parents were taking him to rehab. this morning the fire marshall will continue investigating a fire that killed a man who was described as a fixture in his south philadelphia neighborhood. joe derosa lived on federal

street. a small fire broke out in a bedroom of his home yesterday afternoon. crews found derosa in that bedroom. firefighters at this point don't know why he couldn't escape. >> there were working smoke alarms in the home. we believe that they activated. the occupant was unable to get outside. it is a tragedy. >> firefighters contained that tire to the bedroom keeping it from spreading. happening today, the family of the toddler that was killed in a hit and run will hand out flyers hoping that that will lead to the driver's arrest. 2-year-old david alasea died after he and his mother were hit by a car in kensington. they turned it over to investigators a week ago and they were not the ones driving. philadelphia police have made no arrest in the hit and run that killed a 4-year-old on the same

day as the alacea case. police found the vehicle the next day after the lawyer for the driver contacted police. detectives said they have to match evidence from the scene with evidence on the vehicle. happening today, classmates and teachers will remember a st. joe's prep student who collapsed during football practice and later died. the school memorial service for ryan gillyard will be set today. the 15-year-old collapsed saturday morning during spring conditioning workouts. it's unclear at this point what caused his death. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> a cold start this morning. you'll have to bundle up if you're headed out the door. the wind is blowing to make it feel even colder. right now there are some clouds around especially farther north and west. reading is 37 degrees with clouds and clouds moving through philadelphia, 41. 37 right now and falling in

wilmington. it's going to be another chilly one at the ballpark. this time tonight with temperatures that will be in the 50s, possibly dropping into the 40s by the end of the game. and this morning we're looking at temperatures that feel like they're in the 20s and 30s thanks to the steady winds out of the northwest. wind chill readings, right now it feels like 27 in wilmington. feels like freezing in philadelphia. northeast philadelphia cold but dry start but just like yesterday tracking some snow showers moving towards the pocono mountains. might be a few flurries in the mountains. the rest of the area getting clouds. no snow. it is cold. hour-by-hour forecast has temperatures climbing slowly. by 11:00, 46 degrees. the winds will still be with us into the afternoon. we have a chilly afternoon. it will be dry. 2:00 in the afternoon in the low 50s. going higher by later often in the afternoon, 54 degrees. dry today but i am tracking some showers for parts of the area

this weekend. take a closer look at that when i'm back in 10. bill it's 10 minutes after 4:00. time for a check of the roads. see how things are moving on this very early friday morning with "nbc 10" first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. jessica? >> good morning, chris. thank you. what we're dealing with is ongoing traffic on the schuylkill expressway. the eastbound lanes, they're losing the left-hand shoulder. not a lot of volume and traffic moving through the area. westbound, only 12 minutes from the vine street expressway to the blue route. as we take a look at the pa turnpike, no problems there as well as you head out for the drive times. the roadways are dry, too, so that's good. if you are going into philadelphia today on the ben franklin bridge, three lanes open. we're losing that right hand lane. it might give you a little bit of volume later on in your commute. you've got to see this a

time later. also breaking overnight, police arrested a second suspect wanted for shooting a police officer in west philadelphia. that officer was investigating drug activity when he confronted the suspects at 51st and master streets. shots were fired. the officer was hit in the arm. he will be oka cording to police. we're working to find out about one suspect who was also wounded. we have new video this morning. of this stage collapse at a school in indiana. the collapse injured more than a dozen students. it happened as the students were giving a musical performance. >> all of a sudden just -- the floor just fell and everybody just fell down everyone. >> i see mothers of the performers just screaming for their children just like are you okay? and they can't find them. >> all of the injured students are being treated at hospitals in indiana. at least one of them is critical.

>> hands up. >> don't shoot. >> well you can see and hear the protests continuing in baltimore over a deadly police arrest there. demonstrators gathered again last night calling for justice in the case of freddy gray. he died sunday after suffering a spinal injury while in police custody. officers involved in his arrest were suspended with pay. protesters are planning a city wide rally this weekend. philadelphia's child welfare agency will pay special tribute to a murder victim today. the department of human services will give kim jones its annual crusader award. he worked for turning points for children. last night co-workers and others honored her at the union league. money raised will help thousands in need. turning point ceo says events like this one helped them cope with jones death. >> there's a person missing from my life you know, and i keep seeing that video of that person walking up behind her and it's

just -- it's very very sad. there's still a wound there. >> he's talking about this video. jones was shot to death in january while waiting for her bus. authorities say a co-worker stalked and killed her because she was going to turn him in for embezzlement. family friends and community leaders came together for a vigil last night for a man who was badly beaten at an olney gas station. they don't think he'll ever wake up from a coma and will remain in a permanent vegetative state. surveillance cameras caught thabeeting. barns sister told "nbc 10" she hopes those responsible will pay for what they did. >> now i won't ever have the opportunity to look at him in his eyes again and tell him i love him because these people decided the right thing to do was to beat my brother. >> police indicate there could

be more arrests coming in that case. police want you to take a good look at this man here on a septa train. he's wanted for a burglary in delaware county where he came face to face with the homeowner. he broke in last friday. when the homeowner police say the thief confronted her and made off with a suitcase filled with cash and jewelry. >> typically those people that get off there live in the area or know the area. it's not a business oriented neighborhood. so we assume that somebody in that neighborhood possibly knows the male. >> radner police are offering a $2500 reward for information that leads to an arrest. a philadelphia police officer resigned amid criminal charges and two other officers are off the job for separate cases. officers rod rick walton resigned wednesday after being charged with cruelty to animals.

officer christopher holmes is accused of lying about narcotics arrest on police documents and officers say christopher jackson stole a witness's cell phone. jackson and hulmes are suspended with the intent to dismiss. another victory of a washington township police officer. joseph debonaventure should be paid for some of the time he was suspended from the force. the judge said the department had no right to suspend him -- rather, the department did have right to suspend him but without pay. now he was acquitted of charges that he made a bogus drunk driving arrest when he stopped assembly man paul moriarity in 2012. this morning former philadelphia mob boss joey mer leino is a freeman. prosecutors said merlino

41 degrees feels 34r50ik 2 this morning. a cold start. watching for snow flurries in the pocono mountains. snow showers moving into northwestern pennsylvania and north central pennsylvania. some of those bringing clouds into allentown and philadelphia. not expecting to see flurries but we are getting a cold start. and we will see that cold air continue to dump out of canada during the day today. this weekend, storm system coming together over texas. it's going to be coming our way and will bring rain to parts of the area. it's going to take some time for this one to move in. most of the weekend for most areas will be completely dry. 3:00 saturday afternoon, sunshine. clouds moving towards our area. saturday evening some showers in central and southern delaware that will push a little farther north into new castle county later saturday morning and early sunday. still a few showers in the area. that's this weekend. today just going to be breezy and cold. take a look at how long the cold

into the schuylkill expressway. as for mass transit, a good alternate. no problems for septa, new jersey transit or patco. familiar faces were on a role last night. john clark was a celebrity team captain at a charity bowling event in south philadelphia. that's car loss ruiz. he hosted the fund-raiser along with other phillies players. proceeds benefitted philadelphia futures and the effort to get low income students into college. well a local family is helping authorities keep drunk drivers off the road. next, the courtroom surprise the defendants are facing.

state trooper who was killed by a drunk driver is teaming up with a local sheriff's department to prevent dui deaths hopefully. state trooper kenton iwaniak was killed. today his family is giving portable breath alizers. in the kathleen kane investigation, they're postponing the hearing. the hearing was scheduled for monday montgomery county court. yesterday kane's lawyers challenged the basis for it. kane's office is accused of leaking secret grand jury information. a federal task force will meet for the first time next week to discuss the problems faced following superstorm sandy. the task force will discuss rising flood insurance rates. they'll talk about fema's role

in helping flood victims. the task force will be led by cory booker and robert menendez along with new york senators and storm victims. menendez will remain on that task force as he faces corruption charges. they'll ask the judge to throw out the case based on the first amendment and another clause in the constitution. new jersey senate members will plan to turn the former show boat casino into a college campus. stockton's plan will turn the casino na a branch campus. the owner said he would let the casino at the campus but the taj mahal's owners are requiring it to remain a casino. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather.
