microcope. let's get to the frightening accident caught on camera in central indiana. students plunging to the floor below as the stage they were performing on gives way. john yang has the latest. what are officials saying about this? >> reporter: good morning, matt. well officials say as frightening as that looks, they say the injuries thankfully are not life threatening and the indiana state police is joining the investigation to try to figure out just what happene what began as a typical high school stage production quickly became much different. ♪ don't stop believing ♪ [ screaming ] >> oh my god! >> reporter: more than two dozen students singing and dancing when suddenly the stage collapses beneath them dropping the teens into the orchestra pit below.

>> all of a sudden you hear this big bang and everybody just -- all the performers basically just completely down. everybody just froze for a second and were just waiting. they thought it was planned, but it wasn't. then you start hearing screams everywhere. >> i knew something had gone wrong. that's like a ten foot drop underneath there. nifs shock. >> reporter: at a news conference this morning, officials said stage maintenance records are being turned over to investigators. >> this is open in some productions. in others to get people closer to the audience there's a cover there. it appears the cover collapsed in total. >> reporter: audience members and school staff immediately began rushing the stage after the collapse pulling the teens to safety. >> all the debris and all the wood and everything was covering some students. people just jumped down and started trying to lift. it was terrifying to see. >> reporter: authorities say more than a dozen students were jird. all taken to area hospitals with

many students and parents thankful it wasn't worse. >> this isn't something yo. >> reporter: school officials say that classes will be held as normal today at that high school. but students who want to stay home are free to. savannah? >> john yang thank you very much. sarah camden was recording on her cell phone as her son blake performed on stage. they are with us right now by skype. good morning to both of you after a very difficult >> good morning. >> blake, you were on stage playing guitar. as i understand it was the final number. what do you remember see >> well for the most part what i remember is i was standing on top of the speaker you can see stage left in the video. and i was just playing through a guitar solo. and i jumped down across the stage and all of my fellow

performers were storming the stage at that point. and, you know as i was getting over there, i was probably about on the edge of the pit on the right side of the stage. you know more and more people kept coming on. so i moved over a couple feet just to make room for more people and it was not even three seconds after i had moved over that all of a sudden the floor caved and i watched 25 30 of my good friends, classmates and some of my best friends and it was honestly for the most part just terrifying. at first it didn't seem real. once it kind of sunk in it was -- at that time it was go time. just doing everything we could to get everybody out of there, get any injuries treated. >> you were somewhat lucky, blake, because you didn't fall in. but you were right there and saw it happen. as were you, sarah, his mom video recording his performance. you must have been terrified. what was your pers

>> it was awful. it was one of those moments every parents dreads. just ultimate panic. you know the moment when the stage collapsed, wasn't sure what was going on. there was a moment of pause where it was so surreal. it was like is this actually happening? is this part of the show? and then just panic. i couldn't see blake. he was behind the big mass of people. and so i just assumed he was in the pit. so you could hear me i'm the one screaming in the video. >> scary night for both of you. thank you for taking a few moments. i know you've been visiting your friends in the hospital. we appreciate it. thank you. they're so lucky as well because it seems like most of the injuries are not very very serious. >> imagine being a parent in the audience and your child disappears below the floor. the fallout is beginning over the u.s. air strikes on al qaeda targets in pakistan.

the hostages' deaths rekindling the debate over the military's use of drones. peter alexander at the white house this morning. hi peter. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. this was an extraordinary public admission of an intelligence failure by this president acknowledging the deadly mistakes can happen in the fog of war. but that fog of war is especially thick when it comes to u.s. drone strikes. and this latest ep society has exposed real concerns with america's long distance efforts against terrorists. >> i profoundly regret what happened. on behalf of the united states government i offer our deepest apologies. >> reporter: now they are looking at what went wrong down the counterterrorism efforts that killed two aide workers including an near continuous surveillance leading up to the operation.

the target high-level al qaeda leadership but officials say they didn't know who was there january 14th wa cia drone strike killed the hostages. >> what do we know about this compound? who do we believe was present? is it indicative of a broader issue? >> reporter: this is president obama's war fought not with boots on the ground but these unmanned assassins. it expanded significantly under obama. up ten times in pakistan yemen, and somalia. from a trike every 40 days under president bush to one every 4 under president obama. as one group put it in january, the u.s. literally didn't know who it was killing. >> the public are assured that this is a program that is lawful effective, and wise. yet repeatedly there are credible allegations. and today an official acknowledgment that deeply and

devastating tragic mistakes were made. >> reporter: both grief and disbelief. >> he wanted to help those people and it cost him h >> reporter: in a statement, wienstein's family says his attackers bear ultimate responsibility. but they have tough words for the obama administration expressing their frustration with elements of the u.s. government whose assistance they described as inconsistent and disappointing. matt and savannah? >> all right. peter alexander at the white house. by the way, there's a new crackdown overnight. authorities in italy arresting at least 18 people in a massive sweep for financing al qaeda in pakistan. the group is also suspected of planning an attack against the vatican and pope benedict back in 2010. officials say a potential suicide bomber had actually travelled to italy, but disappeared when he realized investigators were following

him. meantime back here, stormy week across much of the country. i'm hearing the biggest threat of tornadoes is still to come. >> that's right. tonight into tomorrow. in fact we've been watching instability throughout the gulf coast as well. take a look at what happened yesterday in miami. an ef-0 tornado strike and lots of problems making its way across the central and southern part of the state causing big problems. flooding trees down cars damaged, hail. this is just the shape of things to come. let's show you what we're going to be looking at later on today. already storms firing up between austin and laredo. we've got a severe thunderstorm watch this morning into the early afternoon hours. we've got a strong jet stream increasing moisture coming out of the south. we've got this upper level low. and where the drier air meets the warmer air, that's where the instability is going to happen. corpus christi new orleans, up

to wichita. 30 million people at risk. strong tornadoes lat. as we go into tonight, another chance for storms. this will stretch from eastern texas, hail and flooding with few tornadoes possible all the way as far east as tuscaloosa and nashville. then the real problem comes in tomorrow. nashville, chattanooga, on into parts of arkansas. 47 million people at risk. wind gusts of 70 miles per hour. tornadoes very likely tomorrow. so we are going to be watching this very very closely because we could be looking at a fairly big outbreak of tornadoes some time tomorrow afternoon. >> all right, al. thank you very much. hillary clinton is facing some new scrutiny this morning over both her time as secretary of state and her family's foundation. how will that all impact her presidential campaign? nbc's andrea mitchell is in washington this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the clinton campaign is pushing back hard today against charges

in the new book "clinton cash." that as secretary of state she did favors for her foundation. hillary clinton took center stage. >> you, too, can be a champion for change. it doesn't matter whether you're a student or an artist a journalist an ambassador maybe even a future president. >> reporter: but she is still trailed by a series of controversy starting with benghazi. republican wills have her testify in public next month. about any private e-mails rega >> i don't know who to ask other than her. and frankly i think the burden of persuasion is on her. >> reporter: then there's the new book "clinton cash" written by a former bush aide charging the clintons with conflict of interests. it cites a 2009 trip to russia claiming hillary clinton pushed russian officials to sign a multibillion-dollar airplane agreement wi boeing. two months after boeing won the

contract the company pledged $900,000 to the clinton foundation. boeing told nbc news it has contributed about $1 million a year to the foundation. and boeing says secretary clinton's advocacy for american goods and services including boeing airplanes is consistent with u.s. policy and advocacy across administrations for several decades in order to help level the playing field against fierce foreign competition. a government ethics expert agreed. >> there's no there's no evidence that she changed the policy based on the donations to the foundation. >> reporter: the book claims the clintons did not disclose all of the donations and speech fees as they had promised. but the clinton campaign says no one has produced a shred of evidence that hillary clinton took any action as secretary of state to produce the interest of the foundation donors. >> all right. thank you very much. by the way, the author of that

book peter schweizer will be here next week. you've been following that case. more allegations against the sheriff's deputy. documents now show that fellow officers were concerned about robert bates' training years ago. gabe gutierrez is following that. >> reporter: sheinelle, good now we're learning some of bates' colleagues had concerns about his relationship with the sheriff and his on-duty behavior more than six this morning more questions about bates' training years before he shot and killed eric harris before a sting operation. in 2009 the sheriff's office launched an internal review that found bates had incomplete field training and on-duty behavior that violated policy.

things his attorney says he has not seen. >> i know he received hundreds of hours of training since 2009. >> reporter: but there were other concerns. the sheriff's office memo from december of 2008 said bates was using his personal vehicle to make unauthorized traffic stops against policy. the sergeant wrote, what is the purpose of having policy if members of our office do not follow it and we as supervisors allow violations because of who the persons are? >> well the accusation's been made that he received preferential treatment. i don't believe that is the case. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview last week -- >> my taser is right here. >> reporter: -- he showed matt where he kept his taser in relation to his gun. >> my gun itself is on my side. you must believe me it can happen to anyone. >> reporter: bates has pleaded not guilty to second degree manslaughter.

a judge is now allowing him to go on a pre-planned vacation to the bahamas. >> it's offensive to the family. it's offensive to the community. and it shows a complete disconnect between mr. bates and >> reporter: bates' attorney says his client really weighed whether to go on that trip but decided it was important because he wanted to spend time with his sheinelle? >> thank you. it is official. loretta lynch has been confirmed by the senate as the next attorney general. eric holder's last day on the jo. former cia director david petraeus was sentenced to two years probation and fined for giving a mistress classified material while she was working on his biography. he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of retention of classified material. tempers boiling over in chicago thursday night in a game between the white sox and the kansas city royals.

7:30 now. friday morning, 24th of april 2015. there's the crowds on the plaza. >> let's look at what's making headlines on a friday morning. more than 12 students injured in westfield, indiana last night when the stage they were performing on suddenly collapsed beneath them. the accident caught on camera by a lot of people in the crowd. the threat of severe weather intensifying in parts of the south and midwest today. the risk of thunderstorms and possible tornadoes stretches from kansas to mississippi. and with protests intensifying in baltimore over the death of freddie gray while in police custody, maryland's go is sending a team of 32 state troopers to deal with crowd control.

both the baltimore pd and justice department are investigating that case. coming up it's one of the world's greatest mysteries. does the loch ness monster exist? how you can join the search from the comfort of your home. >> nessy. let's begin with new criticism being thrown at dr. oz over some of the views he expresses on his television show. in a moment we'll talk to him exclusively. but first nbc's stephanie gosk has the latest. >> reporter: dr. oz under fire again. this time from colleagues one week after ten doctors from outside columbia wrote to the medical school there questioning dr. oz's position at the university eight columbia faculty members issued on op-ed in "usa today" attacking the dr. oz show. many of us are spending a significant amount of our clinical time debunked ozzisms. adding this unsubstantiated medicine sullies the reputation

of columbia university and undermines the trust tha esse to physician/patient relationships. >> if i wanted to stop him, i would write a letter recommending he be fired from abc. i wouldn't write a letter to columbia saying stop him from doing the job he's good at. >> reporter: the new round of criticism came as oz took on the first round of critics on his show. >> the question you should be asking yourself i did for quite a while, is what's the motivation. why now? >> reporter: in thateir op-ed, the colleagues said he should begin with a simple disclaimer. >> the show's purpose is not to talk about medicine. it's to talk about the good life. >> reporter: in an interview that took place before the interview was published -- >> it's called the dr. oz show. we have oz as the middle and doctor is up in the little bar for a reason. i want people to realize that

i'm a doctor and i'm coming into their lives to be supportive of them. but it's not a medical show. >> reporter: for "today," stephanie gosk, nb. >> dr. oz good morning. good to have you here. let's start where that piece left off. you said the word doctor is up in the corner of the graphics internationally. but you often wear scrubs on the show and people trust what you say because you have a medical doctor. have you upheld that trust over the years? >> without question. i'm proud of what we've done on the show. it's much broader than a medical lexture series. people don't want to be hounded about information that's irrelevant to their lives. it's about celebrating life and getting to them where they live. >> do you think when a doctor becomes the host of a television show that he or she deserves a certain leeway and can do and say things on the air that perhaps you wouldn't do or say in private practice? >> it's much broader than what a

doctor might speak about on their own practice. i'm going to embrace unconventional routes. matt i've always done it. my whole life has been about pushing boundaries. looking around the corner. both high-tech solutions but also some low-tech approaches. i think people have to get comfortable. in america, that's where the conversation is moving. >> this is the way you position it. you tend to position yourself as a crusader for your viewers. and their good health. and the little guy taking on the big guys. but these doctors are positioning you very differently. they're saying you're careless and reckless as a doctor and you could be endangering the health of those viewers. >> to be clear, there are different types of attacks that come out. some have agendas. the ones i dealt with last week and yesterday, were folks who had to clear gmo biases. i think they were unfair not wanting us to have that

conversation. when i talk about hard core medical issues which i do it is a medical show in i do cover those topics but it's broader than that. hard core medical topics we're all buttoned up. but i have to go beyond that. because health is not always found in a doctor's office. nutrition is a good example. >> but when you use words like breakthrough and radical and miracle to describe products or processes on your show does the doctor in you ever cringe at what the talk show host in you is saying? >> i am proud of all those words. there's only one time i have not been proud. and that's the frustration that's been expressed about weight loss supplements. which i wish i could take back the words i said about them. this is a flawed area. i haven't talked about them in a year. so many americans think i'm all about the fake ads coming into their spam folders. that's not who i am. what i'm trying to do is help people understand their bodies better so they can be the expert on their bodies. so when they go to talk to their

doctor, that is supported. i hear from viewers and doctors all the time about how we have helped make that confers easier for them. because there are themes in america that we don't associate with health. as a good example, the nutrients we put in your body. that has to be a forefront on my show. >> going back to the criticism from faculty members at columbia. quote, many of us are spending a significant amount of our time debunking ozzisms regarding metabolism game changers. irrespective of the underlying motives, this sullies the reputation of columbia university and undermines the trust that is essential to physician/patient relationships. sullying the reputation of the university. that's very strong stuff. >> it's actually -- i'm appreciative in that same le applauded many things we do. you're not going to please

everyone. that's not my goal. my job is to help america understand the opportunity towards health. there are going to be times when i'm going to discuss topics where we just don't have all the information yet. other times we're going to be extraordinarily targeted because we have a truly new breakthrough on health. the show has to be broader than what might take place in the doctor's office. and i completely respect why so many of my colleagues might have a difficulty with that. but i appreciate many do understand. >> and if more and many doctors come out and criticize you, can you survive this? can you show survive this? >> without question. i expect my colleagues -- this is an important topic to come out there. and we are hearing from many. some critical, some supportive. the goal for all of us is it has to be a focus on people who need our help. i expect them to continue to be discussed. and i'm celebrating on our show our 1,000th episode next year i want to do the show as long as

a group of walkers here. your dad the great muhammad ali was diagnosed over 30 years ago. so this has impacted your family. how does this walk help other families like yours? >> you know what this walk there's a lot of information there. in addition to raising money for research there's a plethora of information for everything on parkinson's. it's a unity. there's a lot of support out there. occupational therapists neurologists out there answering questions. it's a great event. >> how's your dad doing? >> he's doing well. he had a couple of infections a few months ago and he's stronger now. he's on the bike working out. hope to see him back at the end of the month. >> this is not just about raising money. it's about building the community of support. >> we have good news about parkinson's. we have a lot of therapies for parkinson's disease. you need to be with the right doctor to give you the cocktail of medicine to get a good quality of life.

taking a look at some of your headlines this morning. more than a dozen people were injured thursday night when the stage at an indiana high school collapsed into the orchestra pit below. the accident was caught on camera by several people in the audience. the school's human resources said classes will go on as scheduled today. there's another listeria scare leading to a big ice cream recall. the recall involves jenny's splendid ice creams after contamination was found in one random sample. the company has also closed down all ice cream shops for the time being. a new study finds more than half of all foods advertised to children do not meet government guidelines for nutrition. researchers at university of illinois chicago looked at more than 400 foods commonly
