freeze warning for much of the area tonight. >> for glenn and all of us here at nbc 10, the news continues with "nbc nightly news." on this friday night, high alert. 50 million people in the path of potentially very violent storms tonight, carrying the high risk of spawning tornados. stage fright, students performing at their high school. >> and the stage plummets below them. serious errors in handling a suspect who later died with the biggest protest in the streets. > authorities break down doors on a suspected terror ring and reveal stunning plans to kill the pope himself. and the boy who can fly. the photos making spirits soar across the country and helping a dad connect with his son. nightly news begins

now. from nbc news world headquarters in new york this is nbc nightly news reporting tonight, lester holt. good evening. as we begin here tonight, severe weather is breaking out in several states across the south. tornado wa are up within a big swath, including the dallas ft. worth metroplex as well as southeast louisiana where a strong storm blue 8 wheelers on their sides. americans across 13 states are entering what is expected to be a multi-day outbreak of storms bringing hail lightning, and as many as two dozen tornados. al roker is watching the storms right now. >> we are seeing a very volatile situation. wat storms approaching louisiana. 8,000 lightning strikes in less than ten minutes.

we're also seeing very strong storms. the areas in yellow are tornado watches, red tornado warnings. especially in kansas right now. a very dangerous situation. for tonight, hutchenson kansas. we're looking at the risk of severe storms. dallas shreveport 32 million people at rick. this danger continues into saturday. charlotte, atlanta st. louis. knoxville. damaging winds, torrential downpours and tornados. and this moves into sunday as well. again, the same area. oklahoma city dallas on into san antonio. 16 million folks at risk. and we've got flash flooding possibilities anywhere from three to five inches of rain throughout parts of arkansas kansas and on down into louisiana, lester. and the danger is this is going to continue on right into next week. so flooding and a lot of damage expected this weekend. >> all right, al

thanks very much. now to a terrifying scene on camera. dozens of students on stage, dancing and singing outside indianapolis when the e collapsed, sending the students plummeting into the orchestra pit below. we have the report from westfield, indiana. >> reporter: it baents the big finish to the show of '80s music the students had planned. singing turned into screams as performers plunged 12 feet to the concrete floor of an empty okay spra pit, when a temporary stage gave way in front of a packed auditorium. >> thought it was planned. but it wasn't. and you hear the screams. >> people were running up to the stage trying to help people out. >> reporter: 16 were treated for broken bones, torn ligaments and possible concussions. today the last one was released. >> i'm sure no one in a million years

soon forget. john yang nbc news, westfield, indiana. tonight baltimore's mayor and y leaders are calling for calm a might be the most massive protest yet af the death of a man who suffered serious injury while in police custody. nbc's tom costello continues to follow the story for us. >> reporter: today, confirmation from baltimore police that once freddie gray was aroasted and placed into a police van arresting officers failed to put a seat belt on him. >> we know he was not buckled in the transportation wagon as he should have been. no excuses for that period. >> rep also today, police said gray appeared to be talking and moving in the van until the third stop. among the questions, was gray given what's known as a rough ride? jarring stops and starts that might have caused his fatal injury?

beautiful. there is an alert tonight about a growing outbreak of bird flu ripping through the u.s. poultry industry. now in 16 states with minnesota the latest to declare a state of emergency. 7 million chickens and turkeys affected since march. and the government is scrambling to figure out how to stop it. janet shamablien has our report. >> reporter: the most significant outbreak in 30 years. minnesota the latest to declare a state of emergency. tonigh more pr measures disineffecting ve and farms. some of these chickens are sick. >> i know what a healthy bird looks like. and these looked a little bit sick. >> reporter: his farm now under quarantine and a complete lockdown at sun rise farms in iowa. one of the largest egg-producing farms. more than 1% of the egg-laying hens in the u.s. will be lost.

there are new evacuation orders for those living around that volcano in chile now spilling ash nine miles into the air. >> reporter: the mighty blast causing most of the damaging chaos in southern chile are spewing toxic ash and gas into the air nine miles into the air for three state days. a tourist at a national park captured the initial eruption. 10 miles from the volcano is now a no man's land. a tiny town choking in ash. 1500 people here forced to flee the dangerous air. no word on when they can come home. chile's director of mining and activity says it could go on for weeks. with it visible from space, satellite image
