mountain. nbc's kelly cobiella is following it from london. good morning. >> reporter: erica, good hundreds injured and dozens trapped in the rubble. the epicenter was 50 miles west of kathmandu. there are reports of an avalanche on mt. everest. nepalese's government says almost the entire country has been hit. outside a hospital in nepal, scenes of chaos with patients in the parking lot. the 7.9 quake shook the capital of kathmandu before noon at 11:56 local time. houses collapsed, roads buckled. this 200-year-old tower, a monument in kathmandu, crumbled to the on ground.rs are trying to dig people out from the rubble. on mt. everest, reports the

quake triggered an avalanche with climbers from around the world. camp one and camp two swept away by avalanche. many climbers missing. climbers missing from north side. mountaineer tweeted from mt. everest. huge avalanc. running for life from my tent. unhurt. many many people up the mountain. the quake was felt 300 miles away in india and pakistan. 20 were killed in india. more than 400 dead in nepal. that number could go higher as rescuers reach the remote towns in kathmandu valley home to 2.5 million people. the government is warning people to stay outside still because of extremely strong aftershocks. peter, one measured 6.6.

>> kelly cobiella in london thanks. >> donna is joining us on the phone from kathmandu. set the scene you are in your car. >> reporter: it was before noon. i was with my son. we were driving down the hill. i initially thought i had a flat tire. it is like you were in the ocean. almost like the road was going in waves. everyone else was driving erratically n brakes. motorcycs falling in front of us. people screaming. trees completely bent in two. we did what we have been trained to do. go to the center of the road and turn off the engine. keep your seatbelt on and crouch down in the car until you think

you can get out. we had more than 11 aftershocks since then. i managed to drive back to my house. i live in the suburbs of kathmandu. on a ridge. it is not the old kathmandu with the old buildings which have been badly hit. e are reports of overflowing hospitals with injured and dead on the sidewalks and streets leading up to the hospital. the main big white tower in kathmandu was toppled the same way in the 1934 earthquake. this is the land of earthquakes. everyone is saying there is a big huge one coming. i don't know if this was it, but it was terrifying. >> that was donatella. we wish you the best. we will talk about this for a whils a massive earthquake. >> and we are just starting to get the details and see the scope of the damage. we will continue to revisit. we want to talk about the

severe weather putting tens of millions in harm's way. we are expecting another dangerous day. dylan. >> yesterday, we had several tornadoes especially in kansas. reports of 11 tornadoes, some caught on camera. these were in rural parts of kansas. luckily we are not hearing reports of too much damage. the national weather service will go out and assess that damage to determine exactly how many tornadoes were seen. you can see multiple tornadoes on that picture alone. we had heavy rain down through e severe storms brought torrential rain. cars getting stuck in a lot of this rain. you do not want to drive through the waters. flash flooding situations. you never know how deep the water is. it was coming down in buckets. we had wind gusts of 70 to 90 miles an hour. more straight line wind damage in texas. a lot of the tornadoes were reported in kansas. today, we do still have the

threat. we have a h i effect. here you see in the red box here. we are looking for that to remain in effect until 9:00. you see the rotation up here in kansas and nebraska. that's where an upper level low is going to trigger more storms later on today. we will see them redevelop later on this afternoon. the only saving grace is the fact the thunderstorms this morning a lot of the energy from the storms that we will see later on this afternoon. we are looking at widespread thunderstorms today. i want to show you parts of kentucky and tennessee. that is our enhanced chance of seeing more tornadoes, damaging wind gusts and hail. dangerous cloud-to-ground ligh stay indoors. >> dylan, thanks. to the stunning acknowledgment from bruce jenner. the symbol of masculine ty confirmed he is a transgender woman. nbc's miguel almaguer has his story. >> reporter: ending months of

that. there has been a dialogue online speculation and interest and conversation and i liked how he started the interview and we got that out of the way right away. it wasn't like they teased it and we have to wait for him to announce it. it came out in the beginning of the interview. >> where does this go from here? he has for the last several years leading a public life as part of the kardashians. everything is out there. the one real story is the one we didn't see on the show. where does bruce and the kardashian clan goes? >> starting at the end of july he will have an eight-episode series where we document and follow him as he transitions and follows his journey. i think it will be interesting to see how that's handled. glaad is working with e. it is a chance to use reality tv as an educational and informational tool. a lot of people can benefit.

>> reporter: good morning,ly several hundred reported dead. survivors running from collapsing walls and falling bricks in the mif the day. the 7.9 quake hit at 7:56 local time. there is widespread damage in the capital. hundreds injured. hospitals overwhelmed with patients treated in parking lots and on the streets. historic 200-year-old tower crumbled to the ground. rescuers are trying to dig people out. more than 50 may be trapped there. and on mt. everest, the quake triggered an avalanche. climbers from around the world preparing to push for the summit. the group north pk tweeted camp one and camp two swept away by avalanche. many climbers missing. climbers missing from the north side as per reports. a tourism official in nepal says eight have died in that avalanche.

an unknown number of missing. there are reports of deaths in india and bangladesh and tibet. nepal was hit with more than 600 reported dead. sheinelle, one government official said almost the entire councily of nepal has been hit. thank you, kelly. to baltimore where protest ares are promising to shutdown the city over thh of the suspect in police custody. this is as the police asked for the help of the eyewitnesss seen on the video filming freddie gray's arrest. authorities said gray should have received medical attention. at some point during his arrest or inside the van, gray suffered a spinal injury that led to his death. to a story of survival in michigan. two sisters are alive after missing for two weeks in a remote part of michigan's upper peninsula. the car got stuck in snow and in
