10 news today" on this wednesday. i'm chris cato. let's begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. its a one of those mornings where you can almost walk out the door without a jacket and you'll be fine. >> there was a chill in the air yesterday but we made it into the 70s. it's warmer today. it will stay warmer as the day goes on. look at the beautiful view from comcast center in center city. calm skies. dry and milder. temperatures have dropped only into the 50s for pottstown, philadelphia wilmington and trenton while millville and atlantic city have dropped into the middle 40s. alan town also at 45 degrees this morning. really pleasant start and grab your sunglasses. by 9:00 60 degrees. near 70 degrees and climbing at lunchtime today. we'll go through it neighborhood by neighborhood. right now check in with first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> good morning, bill. we always have good news at 4:00 in the morning on the vine

street expressway on 16th street everything moving along fine. there's not even a vehicle on the roadway. we are dealing with ongoing construction taking out a lane and part of the shoulder. road work crews on the eastbound side. you can see not affecting the drive time whatsoever. the rest of our majors no problem southbound from woodhaven road to the vine 13 minutes. no problems on the schuylkill or blue route. if you're headed into the city from new jersey headed westbound over the ben franklin bridge we're down to three lanes due to ongoing construction. chris. 4:02. the city of baltimore is in its final hour of a curfew that started last night at 10:00 p.m. there was some rioting as police worked to enforce that curfew. "nbc 10's" matt delucia is live for us this morning with new details from overnight, matt. >> reporter: chris, we've seen a lot less activity in baltimore compared to last night. once that curfew went into effect baltimore city police report there were no major

incidents and only a handful of arrests. that curfew on the first night as we mentioned ends in less than an hour and this morning schools will be reopening today. initially once that curfew went into effect at 10:00 p.m. there were still plenty of people in the streets. police used smoke cannons to disperse the crowds. the police commissioner says eventually the clouds left peacefully clearing the streets by 11:00. >> in totality after the city after our curfew went up we've had about ten total arrests. getting reports from the organization that we do not have a lot of activity or movement throughout the city as a whole so the curfew is working. >> reporter: new pictures in to "nbc 10," 150 troopers from new jersey are in baltimore helping keep the peace. sky force 10 was over the state police headquarters in hamilton mercer county yesterday

afternoon when those state troopers set out in a 20 vehicle caravan. they're joining thousands of law enforcement from around the country after the call was made to bring in reinforcements to keep the area calm following the violence that happened on monday. >> they're going down there to protect life and to protect property and to make sure that the good people of baltimore can keep their community intact. >> state police packed protective gear and readied their urban search and rescue and task force one mobile unit. this is how the stands will look when the orioles will take on the chicago white sox this afternoon in baltimore. the game will be closed to the!rj public because of the unrest. it's believed to be the first game without fans in major league's baseball's 145 year history. the orioles postponed their games monday and tuesday. much different situation than what we saw yesterday and what we were telling you about yesterday, but coming up at 4:30, president obama has been

speaking out about what happened in baltimore. getting that audio together. we'll see you in 30 minutes. matt delucia, nbc 10 news. meantime unrest surfaced in ferguson missouri. it led to gunfire, injury and at least one arrest. >> you heard the gunshots there on this clip from twitter. police arrested a man and recovered a gun after another man was shot last night. this happened where michael brown was killed by a white police officer last august. it's not clear if the shooting was related to that protest. a newspaper report estimated the crowd at about 50 people in ferguson. some lit trash cans on fire. so far no comments from police on the shootsing or the demonstration. you can count on "nbc 10" for the continuing coverage on the crisis in baltimore and the unrest in ferguson. we'll monitor the situations through the "nbc 10 news" app. at 4:05 we have new

information now on the murder of a burlington town mother whose body was found in maryland. yesterday a grand jury returned an indictment against the victim's husband. crosby's wife disappeared on new year's eve. investigators say they used a gps and her husband's vehicle to find her body in maryland. his mother jo crosby tried to help him cover up the crime. a man charged with murdering a co worker on the job has a court hearing. peter atem is charged with murdering danny vasquez. investigator said atem stabbed vasquez because vasquez pulled a prank on him. today a judge will decide if

a couple is going to be held accountable for a ferret attack. the baby was strapped a car seat on the floor. she and her four siblings are in foster care. we have new video in from wilmington where two women were shot last night. viewers sent us these clips of police responding to the arrest on west 6th street. sky force 10 was also over the scene last night. we're still working to find out the victim's condition. police and fire officials called for calm after crowds appeared at the shooting scene and at the hospital. a state lawmaker who was running for mayor of chester says it's time to do something about that city's escalating violence. state representative thaddeus kirkland will hold a meeting this morning. he will discuss leadership at the chester police department. in the past week there have been three murders. happening today, crews are still opening to reopen this road in lower township province

montgomery. there was a deadly and messy accident. a tanker truck collided head on with a tractor-trailer. cosmetic powder spread all over the area. they hope to have it open in time for the morning rush. this morning operations are back to normal at philadelphia international airport after an emergency landing yesterday delayed dozens of flights. this is cell phone video from a passenger that shows the jet's propeller stopped in midair. witnesses say they saw a fire in the propeller's engine. united airlines express jet was headed from raleigh to newark when it was diverted to philly. the plane was on the ground and everyone was evacuated in minutes thanks to a quick thinking crew. >> he told everybody just don't grab your stuff, get off the plane immediately. people were going off the back of the plane, the front of the plane. >> one passenger with a history of heart trouble was rushed to

4:14. new this morning, american airlines is apologizing for some delayed flights last night including one from dallas to philadelphia. the airline blames software problems with the pilot's ipad. passengers used social media to complain about several flights being delayed. in some cases planes ready for takeoff had to be returned to the gate for pilots to access wi-fi connection. all departing american airlines flights are scheduled to leave on time. still no word on who might be responsible for another a cyber attack at rutgers. this is the second cyber attack at rutgers. the fbi is investigating. this morning officials in nepal say the death toll from the earthquake that hit saturday is now over 5,000.

mean time, storms and mudslides are making recovery efforts more difficult. thousands are living outside their home without clean water and sanitation. the u.n. says this is the worst quake to hit nepal in 81 years. we spoke to a montgomery county man who isn't sure when it will be safe for his mother to return to nepal. his mother was supposed to go home this sunday after spending time in this area. they worry if she does go to nepal she'll be stranded somewhere where it is likely in ruins. her immigration attorney helped her get a visa extension for two to three months. >> the road between her home and the airport is pretty bad. >> extend your visa for at least a month, see what happens because what happens is once you file with extension until it's denied, at least your status will be valid. >> the family says their attorney is also reaching out to local lawmakers asking the u.s. to add nepal to a list of countries with a special status

that would allow residents to stay here until it's safe to return home. saudi arabia says it arrested 93 people with ties to isis in recent months. officials say they foiled the suspect's plans to carry out multiple terrorist attacks, including a strike on the u.s. embassy in saudi arabia. a spokesperson for the embassy had no comment on that reported plot, but in mid march u.s. officials did halt some services as well as diplomatic missions over security. nigeria's army says it rescued 300 girls and women from boko haram. those do not include any of the 300 school girls that were kidnapped last year. today a house committee will hear testimony from some of the nation's top security officials about protecting air space in washington, d.c. now earlier this month a man was able to fly a gyrocopter through

air space and land it on the white house lawn. today japan's prime minister shinzo abe will make history in washington. he will become the first ever japanese leader to address congress. his grandfather addressed congress in 1957 but just one chamber. last night the prime minister and his wife were honored with a state dinner at the white house. this is only the eighth state dinner hosted by president obama during his six years in office. the prime minister's trip to the u.s. is meant to strengthen economic and military ties between japan and the u.s. 4:17. time to talk about philadelphia's race for the mayor. there will be another candidate forum later this morning. they'll be discussing jobs and other issues with the philadelphia work office in center city. the democratic candidates for mayor are lyn abraham, nelson diaz, doug oliver and the lone

republican candidate is melissa murray. the mayoral primary is may 19th. text talk. it's how many of us communicate these days but what kind of impact has texting and shorthand had on students' ability to formally write? "nbc 10's" katy zachry took that question to several english teachers. katy joins us live from university city with what those teachers are saying in the classroom. katy. >> reporter: hi, chris. many of us know that students these days are constantly switching back and forth between informal texting and formal writing between schools and exams. for some students it can be tough to make the switch and know when abbreviations and shorthand is appropriate and not. we went to council rock high school where several english teachers met with us. they talked to us about students' writing challenges these days. one teacher tells us her ninth

race down broad street. they thought about it said, okay sounds like a good idea. >> now it's the eighth largest race in the country. how about that? 40,000 runners will take place in the 40 mile run through the heart of philadelphia. you can watch it live on "nbc 10" and in spanish on telemundo 62. all of us here on the morning show will be part of the broadcast and we are really excited about it. we know a lot of you are as well. revel's new owner wanted the casino back in business by memorial day. next we find out if the grand reopening is going to happen in that time.

4:25. governor jack markel will discuss downtown development grants. it will be used for downtown improvements. the governor will outline the awards when he visits both cities. wilmington previously qualified for one of those grants. it looks like atlantic city's former revel casino will not reopen by memorial day. that's according to the casino's new owner, glen straub. he has many roadblocks with the former casino. we've highlighted them including no power and fights over emergency generators. the developer bought revel for $82 million earlier this month. also in south jersey the search for an interim president of stockton university begins today. herman satcamp is taking an immediate medical leave. he made the announcement
