"nbc 10 news" starts now. right now police in texas are still searching for possible bombs after a gunman opened fire on a security guard outside a controversial event. here at home improving the relationship between police and the communities that they serve. a new effort that starts in philadelphia today that uses basketball to strengthen ties. plus, check it out outside a live look of center city. the work week is off to a summary start. how about 56 degrees. looking ahead to a big warmup this afternoon. later in the week shorts weather. welcome to "nbc 10 news today" on this monday. i'm chris cato. let's get to meteorologist bill

henley and the first alert forecast. nice warm start this morning. >> in the 50s this morning. we will soar through the 660s and the 70s. plenty of sunshine to warm things up. summer like afternoon. right now, clear skies over center city. 58 degrees in philadelphia. 48 for allentown and mount holly and 47 in millville. there are some chilly spots, but overall those are going to be disappearing fairly rapidly. look at the warmup. 57 degrees by 6:00. by 9:00 68 degrees. potentially up to 80 degrees by lunchtime today and still climbing. go through the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood and show you what to expect where you live. first, let's get a check of traffic with first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> happy monday. we're starting off out on 95 around woodhaven road where i'm

getting word of an accident in the southbound lane. you actually can't see it in our cameras but you can see no volume headed southbound towards that scene. 14 minutes on that drive towards the vine street expressway. that accident not setting anybody back too much as we take a check out on the new jersey roads. 42 freeway, drive times up. only 5 minutes headed northbound up towards the walt whitman bridge. the ben franklin bridge we are still dealing with construction headed westbound into philadelphia. losing one lane down to three headed westbound. new from overnight, police want to find the person who shot a killed a man in philadelphia. it happened on stouton street in kensington. it's not clear what led to the shooting. we'll keep you updated. also in kensington a man's bathroom break turned violent. police say a man came up to him and called him homophobic slurs

and stabbed him in the face, neck and hands. the victim is expected to be okay. police are looking for an attacker. no one was injured in a house fire. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. to texas now where authorities are working to identify two gunmen who were killed by police outside a conference center. police say those gunmen opened fire on a security guard during a controversial art exhibit featuring cartoons of the prophet muhammad. tracy davidson is live. consider it happened outside the curtis call wood center in garland. police are on the scene seeing if there are any bombs in the car used by the gun men. once the scene is safe they will remove the bodies.

the two men m in the vehicle when they pulled up to the event and started shooting. officers returned fire killing both men. overnight robots with the bomb squad surrounded the vehicle searching for explosives. police bloblgd off the area and they evacuated nearby buildings. >> we heard it real quick and there was another quick and another pop, pop, upon pop, pop quick. they made an announcement. everybody make your final selects, get up to the front and like he said when we got up there he was frantic. get out, get out now. if you don't get out now, you're getting locked in here. >> no one else was hurt in the shooting. it was based by the american freedom defense. a number of local political and religious leaders have denounced the ads. they include the tag line jew

hatred is in the koran. the president of the american freedom defense initiative released the following e-mail saying cop shot outside our free speech event. we are in lockdown. perps had rifles and may have had explosives. this shows how much our event was needed. now the injured security officer is expected to be okay. we still don't know whether the shooting was for sure related to the event. we'll keep you posted. live in the dinl tall operations center tracy davidson. today two of the people at the center of the jersey jam scandal will face charges. bridgette ann kelly and former port authority will be arraigned on nine federal charges. david wildstein pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy. prosecutors alleged the trio

caused traffic jams as pay back against a mayor who did not support christie. christie is not implicated and says he knew nothing about it. the man accused of murdering a doctor inside her home in center city will stand trial today. police say jason smith of levittown was working as an exterminator in january 20613. they say he killed her after she complained. smith trang ld ketanutti and then started a fire. when police checked her cell phone records they found records of her calling the extermination company. new information out of camden county where a road has reopened after a vehicle hit a pedestrian. traffic is once again moving on route 73 in mount laurel.

it happened around 8:30 last night. we don't know the victim's condition. this morning we have new information on a military vehicle crash that injured six people, including four soldiers on the new jersey turnpike. we now know that one of the soldiers suffered a spinal injury. sky force 10 was over the scene late friday night. that's where a humvee and a military convoy was involved in a wreck. the crew was traveling from fort drum new york to joint base maguire. two civilians were hurt. no charges have been filed. happening today, a game for peace. philadelphia law enforcement will take to the basketball court in an effort to start a conversation with young people at a time when the whole nation is already talking. "nbc 10's" matt delucia is live in west philadelphia. matt what's this program all about? >> reporter: well chris, right now police officers know that the relationship with the community isn't exactly what it could or should be and they're

hoping this might change that. they're doing it in the form of a basketball game. the idea is to get a bunch of children to come in talk with them engage in a conversation and allow both sides to ask questions and in doing so there might be a better understanding by the time everyone leaves. this comes at a time when there are strained relationships with the police. there are lots of questions brought on by the incidents in ferguson. this is happening this afternoon at 5:30 at the james wright recreation center on haverford avenue. in the next 30 minutes we'll talk about one officer and his take on why this really does need to happen right now, especially getting these kids involved. for now we're live in west philadelphia i'm matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 8 minutes after 4:00. it is mild outside and clear, too. so get your sunglasses ready.

their deep faith is helping them cope with the loss. frein was caught after the 48 day man hunt. they're replacing hurt and fan with forgiveness. >> if i focused everything that eric frein, all that's going to do is tear me up inside. there's no reason to hate him. i don't wish anything on him. >> now prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for frein. trooper alex douglass was critically injured. a 7-year-old girl is still in critical condition this morning after she was injured in a drive by shooting over the weekend in philadelphia. it happened saturday night on haverford avenue in west philadelphia. the 7-year-old was sitting in the back seat of her parents car with two other children waiting to leave the house when somebody drove by and opened fire. police are still looking for the shooter who witnesses say was

driving a dark colored sedan. >> i heard gunfire going off. it was just a red car over there. there was a big hole inside the mirror. >> that 7-year-old girl is still in the hospital. doctors found a projectile lodged in her skull. it's unclear whether it was a bullet or a shard of glass. a block away from that crime scene two police were injured when their suv collided with two other cars. it happened at haverford and 55th street. the officers were chasing a dark blue sedan at the time of the crash but they haven't told us if this was related to the drive by situation. 4:16. happening for today. the philadelphia mayoral questions will field questions from perhaps their most curious and most unpredictable panel of citizens yet. elementary school students. what will they ask? more nontraditional forums, katy. >> reporter: this may sound a little unorthodox. they sat down with organizers. they promise us the questions we are going to hear are pretty on point and compelling as well. the student forum is hosted by the center for civics and civic engagement. governor ed rendell will be one of the organizers as well as renee chenault-fattah. they have collected hundreds of questions. they selected the best questions from the group and those students later this morning will pose the questions to all six democratic may oral candidates in person. the forum will be streamed live to classrooms throughout philadelphia. what are some of these compelling and on point questions that we're told about? over the next hour we will share some of them with you. prepare to be impressed. reporting live in center city, "nbc 10" katy zachry. on to decision 2016 now.

another republican has joined the race for white house. retired neurosurgeon ben carson will make a formal announcement from his hometown in detroit. carson will be the first african-american to join the field. so far three republicans have officially joined the race they are senator ted cruz of texas, senator rand paul of kentucky and marco rubio. >> on the democratic side there are two declared candidates. former secretary of state hillary clinton and senator bernie sanders of vermont. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >>. bright sunshine yesterday. it's going to make a return appearance today. right now the temperatures are cooling down. we're getting a warm start. boat house row is all lit up. the water very calm. there's not much wind around right now. just a 3-mile-an-hour breeze at philadelphia international. look at that temperature, 58 degrees. the normal low temperature this

4:23. investigators believe a faulty electric cord led to this fire. more than 200 people had to be evacuated when fire broke out on that building's fourth floor. everyone made it out safely. a main airport runway in nepal is still closed this morning. that's causing problems for people trying to deliver supplies to nepal. the airport is now banning large planes from landing there. the death toll from the quake has climbed to more than 7200. nine americans are among those still missing. meantime a group in delaware is sending volunteers and aid to nepal. they're gathering everything that they need before they head overseas. organizers say their biggest obstacle is the closing of nepal's only working airport as we just told you. >> maybe some intermittent

difficulty getting supplies into the country on a case-by-case basis. there is mild corruption or in other cases there may be a tax which has been added. >> the relief team was told if they pack their medical supplies in suitcases that it will attract less attention. they say the sooner they can get it there, the sooner they can help those who need the relief. all right. listen up as you're planning your summer perhaps your weekday vacation spot here with the warm weather this week. the american academy of dermatology calls today melanoma monday. it's designed to raise awareness of skin cancer. the one place that's often neglected when applying sun screen is the back. that's the most common site for melanoma melanoma. in a survey of more than 1,000 people the academy found that more than 1/3 never try to put sun screen on their back. fewer check their backs for
