"nbc 10 news" starts now. police complaints are turning into action in new jersey. the demand that activists are taking to the nation's capitol today. cheers at the airport lead to dread. we talk to neighbors that say expansions at philadelphia international will ruin their quality of life. get ready for another warm one today. a live look at beach avenue in cape may. this morning it's already noticeably warmer than it was this time yesterday but today we also get a chance of storms. we'll keep an eye on that for you. good morning. welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm chris cato. let us begin with meteorologist bill henley. a little summer like pattern

setting up. >> yesterday 85 degrees the high temperature. chris, as you mentioned, it is warmer this morning. some spots 15 degrees warmer. a lot of sunshine this morning will lead to a quick warmup. mild temperatures this morning, 66 in northeast philadelphia. trenton and wilmington at 66 degrees. a quick warmup with bright sunshine. there's a chance we'll see scattered showers, even the possibility of a thunderstorm. we'll go through it hour by hour with future weather. first, let's check in with first alert traffic reporter, jessica boyington. happy tuesday. we're on the vine street expressway where this is one of the bigger problems of the morning on 24th street dealing with ongoing construction. that starts from broad towards the schuylkill expressway.

down to one lane passing by on the westbound side. all eastbound lanes are open as well. this is part of that construction. you can see right here, not a lot of vehicles driving through it. drive times relatively affected. drive times at 5 minutes there. 95 no problems. blue route doing fine. heading into philadelphia from new jersey on the ben franklin bridge still dealing with that construction headed westbound losing one lane there. new from overnight, crews are still cleaning up debris after a garage wall collapsed in germantown. this happened on east locust avenue. police blocked off the sidewalk as a safety precaution. no one was injured. happening today, local activists and family members of victims of police shootings will travel to washington d.c. they're calling on federal officials to look into several police departments in south

jersey. bridge done millville and vineland. one of them is the widow of g gerraine weed. they shot and killed him in december. only one of the accused officers testified and he denied charges that his squad regularly stole cash and drugs from suspects over a period of years. the prosecution built its case on the testimony of suspected drug dealers and one ex-officer who pleaded guilty. happening today, camden county investigators will return to the scene of a deadly hit and run in audubon looking for a possible lead in the case. last month someone found christopher dean lying on ning the police will meet his family to hand out flyers and canvass the area asking people if they saw anything on the night of april 9th. today a man accused of

shooting and killing a temple university student. leonardo rivera was accused of killing a man. police have not said why they believe he was killed. new from overnight in burlington county an 11-year-old boy is now safe after being missing for several hours. logan christopher kajumano disappeared around 7:30 last night. police found him around 12:30 though they have not said where or how they found him. later today chester county officials are expected to release the names of three women who were killed in a mobile home fire yesterday afternoon. two adults and two children were able to escape. investigators tell "nbc 10" that the family had gathered there to mourn the loss of a relative who just passed away on sunday.

>> smoke, it was terrible. that thing was well gone before the firefighters got here. >> the family's two cats and a dog also died in the fire. the cause is still under investigation but it is not believed to be suspicious. in burlington county this is suspicious. firefighters put out a string of breaking fires. this was the scene from sky force 10 earlier. you saw that. this is video from the ground. authorities believe the fires were intentionally set. they don't know who did it. the city of philadelphia recently celebrated a major expansion of philadelphia international airport. we brought you that news. now it's drawing some criticism from some of its closest neighbors. abc 10's katy zachry is live from tinicum township.

>> reporter: people living in the neighborhood behind me for years have dealt with the loud sounds of planes taking off, but now that the airport is expanding its runway to allow for bigger jets and more international travel there's more concern among these neighbors. they fear the sound will only be louder and more disruptive to their lives. the airport renovation project is expected to take more than a decade to complete. it includes other things in addition to the runway extension. what exactly is happening at the philadelphia airport and how will that directly impact the neighborhood behind me? i will lay out how the airport is changing and why some people behind me are thinking about selling their homes or trying to. reporting live in delaware countries county katy zachry "nbc 10 news."".news." this morning we're hearing

radio calls. >> what i'm being told she is the mother directly under the bridge. we have no ice on the baby. >> on sunday janesha perry tossed her 1-year-old son off the bridge into the lehigh river. she then jumped into the river. witnesses called the police. a police officer found the baby pulled him out and revived him and crews rescued the mother. >> if they can't be a mom, take the easy way out. take it to someone that can help them, not hurt it. >> that was one of the witnesses who saw the terrifying incident. police have charged perry with attempted murder. the baby is expected to survive. randall magmere is accused of reckless driving. officers say he slammed his car into a humvee late friday night.

that humvee ran off the road and hit a tree. the camden county metro police department is drawing interest from nearby communities. city leaders have heard from other towns that would like to also be overseen by that police department. the camden county metro police force just celebrated a two year anniversary last week. the department took over law enforcement in four cities in 2013. the force has 400 officers and another class of recruits currently being trained. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> a nice mild start. and a clear start for now. we will see sunshine to start the day but this afternoon there's a chance of showers and possibly thunderstorms. none of that this morning. 60 degrees in reading. it was in the 40s yesterday. 63 in wilmington.

a warmer start and dry avenue. beach avenue no sign of any rain drops until later today. that's when we could see some showers and thunderstorms crossed out at the shore but areas inland. the western suburbs are most likely to get those showers and possibly some thunderstorms first. that will be during the afternoon hours. possibly not until mid afternoon. the wet weather that we're watching is moving into the ohio valley. those showers, heavier downpours, that may hold together for us for this afternoon. so your hour-by-hour forecast showing a dry morning and a sunny one, too. a few high clouds reaching into allentown and reading to start the day. no sign of any steady rainfall until we get into the afternoon hours. sprint cup sprinkle or two is possible. noontime today. rain drops in philadelphia. heavier showers and thunderstorms will wait until the mid afternoon hours. that's 3:00 and they'll keep on going. it's not going to be an all day rainfall that's for sure. we will start with sunshine.

matt delucia is live. matt what are these leaders hoping to get out of this meeting today? >> reporter: really chris, some ideas to move this city in the right direction. the wilmington renaissance corporation which is putting together this meeting later this morning, they know they're up against some very tough perceptions. this is a city of roughly 70,000 people and crime is still a big problem. 11 homicides since the start of the year. four more than this time last year. this meeting is all about focusing oen the good and what can be good starting with say, art and housing. you have people with all types of business experience part of this trying to be creative and successful at the same time. >> we bring the business community, corporate nonprofit government folks together we share what's been hang and what will be forthcoming. >> reporter: that meeting of the minds happens here in downtown wilmington. the area of the group says it's

for yourself. >> former hewlett-packard ceo carly. she was quick to take on democrat hillary clinton. >> i'm running for president. >> our founders never intended us to have a professional political class. they believed that citizens and leaders needed to step forward. we know the only way to reimagine our government is to reimagine who's leading it. >> and senators ted cruz rand paul and marco rubio have already announced that they're running for the republican nomp nation. clinton and senator bernie sanders are the only leaders to announce. later this month hillary clinton will answer questions about benghazi and her use of private e-mails as secretary of

state. they requested that she appear for two separate sessions but she said she would only appear once. they're looking at the shooting at the cartoon contest as a possible terrorist attack. elton simpson was on a terror watch list and before the attack he linked himself to isis on twitter. the gun men were shot and killed sunl outside a convention center. >> while we in no way condone the behavior of the criminals, we absolutely uphold the right of freedom of expression we must ask ourselves at what point does freedom speech become hate speech. >> the council is calling for a federal investigation to see if event organizers in texas bear responsibility for the violence on sunday. sponsors of the cartoon contest

say the event was staged to show support for the french satire magazine "charlie hebdo." a teary eyed dzhokhar tsarnaev. she testified that he was a warm child. he wiped his eyes with a tissue. he was convicted last month on all charges. three people were killed and more than 260 hurt when a pair of bombs exploded two years ago. look at this. parts of kansas are covered in water this morning. a storm swept through during the evening commute last night. it caused a lot of problems. some areas were so flooded that cars stalled out and others were completely stranded. a high surf advisory remains in effect for parts of southern california this morning.

look at these waves. life guards are warning swimmers about rip currents. some waves were 14 feet high. >> stand there and they pull me in. i'd have to stay my ground. >> you can't stay there for over 10 seconds because your feet absolutely go numb. >> inexperienced swimmers are being urged to stay out of the water. yesterday life guards rescued at least 16 people. as we told you, hurricane season is less than a month away june 1st. storm specialists say now is the time to get ready. "nbc 10" had the chance to go inside a hurricane hunter plain that was arriving yesterday. hurricane hunters fly into storms to gather data. the plane came to the jersey shore as part of an awareness tour to help people get ready. >> any hurricane season can

degrees. in the 50s at alan town. it is 60s. you have to go to cape may harbor to find a reading. 59 degrees in cape may. the rest of the area is in the 60s to start with. the clouds are moving in with a cold front that will likely bring us some showers and possibly some thunderstorms. the heaviest activity is to the west. it will be pushing off shore. the clouds will be breaking and temperatures back down into the 60s to start with. some areas will be in the 50s tomorrow night. that's 4:00 tomorrow morning. clouds linger into tomorrow morning. will be in the middle 80s. noontime, might see 72 degrees in dover but in the low 60s in philadelphia with temperatures no warmer than the lower 70s tomorrow. today it will be another summer like one.

63 degrees at 6:00 this morning. by 9:00 70s. up to 80 grease and still climbing but the sunshine starts to fade. that's when the clouds start moving in. watching the skies for some showers. show you how long that shower threat sticks around. look at the weekend forecast with the seven day. never too early to look at the weekend. 4:22. as you head out the door at this hour. "nbc 10's" jessica boyington is watching traffic. >> good morning, everybody. on the schuylkill expressway we're free and in the clear. this is right around spring garden street. the westbound lanes right in here. you can see only 11 minutes though the total trip from the vine street expressway up towards the blue route. no problems eastbound into center city. upper moreland you can watch out for an accident over in the shoulder. 422 the drive times there free and in the clear as well. 7 minutes eastbound from 29 towards the schuylkill

expressway. westbound not having any problems especially in the morning commute. mass transit no problems or delays for septa, new jersey transit or the patco speed line. the department of transportation released some numbers that say look how much airlines are making off the extra fees that you paid. last year airlines collected $3.5 billion in baggage fees and reservation changes totaled $3 billion. both those fees have increased over recent years several times. transportation officials say this makes up a growing share of airline revenue. today president obama along with many of you will celebrate cinco demayo. cinco demayo commemorates the mexican army's win over puebla. a pesky bug buzzing into backyards across the area.

two teenage brothers in delaware are still in critical condition more than two weeks after getting poisoned. the parents are recovering. a chemical was sprayed in the u.s. virgin islands. it was banned in 1984 but the u.s. epa. the state department of environmental protection is working to control the black fly

"nbc 10 news" starts now. allegations of police brutality are now plaguing a police officer in delaware. the injuries one suspect received when this man arrested him. trouble in the air. while the majority of philadelphia is celebrating a planned airport expansion this morning, "nbc 10" is talking to neighbors who say it will be disas strous for them. our summer like stretch continues. we're off to an even warmer start today than yesterday and some people could see some showers and storms but that's later. we'll find out the timing.
